Entertaining with a sweet lesson
We bought this for our preschooler to help him understand the everyday life that happens at school, especially all of those unwritten, social playground rules that can be hard for kids to take in.

I used this book as a teaching tool in my new student group. The students loved the story and how a new student can shake up the recess bully just by inviting her to play. I used the story as a tool for teaching about bullying and means for stopping the bullying. Great story!

WELL DONE QUIRKY LITTLE BOOK - I LIKED IT
I like this one.It is just enough over the edge, illustration wise, to make it quite interesting.More importantly than my likeing it, is that all the kids seem to love this one.For some reason it appeals to them.The story is certainly good and teaches a wonderful lesson on a subject that bothers most kids, self-image.The author has hit this subject head on and has done a very good job of it in quite understandable style.I like the art work in this one, and feels it makes the point of the story stick.Recommend this one highly.

A Magical Story
There are not enough superlatives for this one. I read a Kirkus review that totally "got it" regarding the instructions for writing a book which are interwoven into the plot. Kirkus said, "Her explanation of how to write a book is just as interesting as the events that she's describing.Best of all, none of this detracts from the novel's emotional core." Absolutely true.
An amazing read, a story within a story
With a voice reminiscent of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, a young girl attempts to tell the story of a classmate who changed the life of everyone she met. And in the telling, the narrator reveals her own tough life and the ray of hope she's shown. Every student should read this book for the poignant compassion, and every writing and language arts teacher should teach this book. A solid debut for young adults and above

An fun-filled story, excellent for young girls
We first met 12-year-old Emily in THE TAIL OF EMILY WINDSNAP and learned her secret: she's half-mermaid, half-human. Emily, however, never knew this secret herself until she took swimming lessons. Not only does she discover her fishy genes, she also learns that her father, a merman, didn't abandon her as a baby after all. Instead, he was imprisoned by the angry ruler of the oceans, Neptune, who found out about the illegal love affair between her human mother and merman father. At the end of the book, the family is reunited and sent to live in a secret place where humans and merfolk can live together in harmony.

In Just Kidding, author Trudy Ludwig addresses the painful topic of teasing and peer exclusion.
Great Teaching Tool!
This is a great book for both the home and the classroom.The story itself is realistic and poignant and makes the distinction between "tattling" and "reporting."When D.J. is teased unmercifully by Vince, D.J.'s life becomes miserable and he begins to feel like a "loser."Fortunately, he finds support from both his family and his teacher, and they help him develop some coping skills which not only enable him to deal constructively with the bully but also enable him to support his friends when they are the objects of the bully's attacks.The Foreward by Stan Davis, founder of www.stopbullyingnow.com, provides a valuable overview of the issue of bullying as well as suggestions about how to help family members deal with the problem.This is a valuable resource for both the home and the classroom.Highly Recommended!

The Teased One's Time To Shine --- Bwilliant!
Rodney Rat is feeling "wather" down. He can't even pronounce his own name because he always pronounces his "rs" as "ws." All the other rodents at his school tease him --- the guinea pigs, the mice and others. He eats his lunch alone and he hides his head underneath his jacket. Then a new rodent shows up, a capybara, who's bigger than any of them and seems like she might be smarter too. But maybe Rodney can outwit her and turn his pronunciation problem to his advantage.
Three cheers for the underdog!
One lesson that my elementary students learned from this story was to not be scared of bullies too much.They eventually go away.

Who's in charge
This book is a wonderful example of Sendak's recent (later) style.It is not so appealing, perhaps, as "Where The Wild Things Are," but it still wonderfully detailed, both fun and moving.And Kuchner's text, though much less interesting, is a good version of the text of the original children's opera on which the book is based.But that is the problem. Where are the names of composer Hans Krasa or playwright Adolf Hoffmeister?The opera, although written earlier, is most famous for being performed at the Terezin concentration camp.The children were mostly killed after the final performances, and Krasa himself was murdered shortly afterward at Auschwitz.Not only does the book not tell this story.It doesn't even seem to know that the work was created, not by Sendak and Kushner, but by Krasa and Hoffmeister.Although the opera is being revived this year by the New York City Opera, again the posters mention Sendak and Kushner but not the original creators.This does not mean that the book is not wonderful, as I expect will be this year's performance of the opera.But what about the creators and original performers, most of whom died for the work?

Another Gift from Maurice Sendak
My six-year-old home-schooled son is picky when it comes to books. He loves "Where the Wild Things Are" so I checked this out of the library. We read it at least a dozen times before it had to be returned and he keeps talking about it. The words roll off the tongue, though the story has that dark element (like Roald Dahl's stories) that challenges your own comfort . The pictures are a feast. And though the kids don't know it yet, the historical setting has been planted so that when we study WWII later, they might remember the little children with the gold stars. So now I must buy a copy. A book sorely in need of annotation.Retold by Tony Award winning playwrite Tony Kushner and illustrated with grace and aplomb by Maurice Sendak (the thinking kid's illustrator), the tale of "Brundibar" is retold in an entirely new format.Originally an opera performed by the children of Terezin (a Nazi concentration camp) for those Germans who had to be convinced that everything was just ducky in the camps.The children were, needless to say, killed after the final performance of this piece, and so the opera is as light-hearted as it is chilling.In the plot, two children attempt to find fresh milk for their ailing mother.Only milk will do.But they are chased away by the nasty Hitler look-alike, Brundibar, and must gather their forces (some 300 children or so) to face up to the bully.Read more

A book with so much Character
Mr. Lincoln was the greatest principle ever. He dressed cool and he acted cool. He would do all sorts of things with his students. He seemed to really light up his school. Well not so much to mean gene. Gene is mean and he is not afraid to show it. He doesn't like people that are different from him. He picks on them and even calls them mean names. All the teachers felt as if they have had enough of old gene. Well Mr Lincoln thinks different of this kid. He brings him under his wing and soon Gene is a normal nice kid again. He introduces him to the atruim that needed new birds in it and it opens up a new world for Gene. He just needed to be shown that all people are different but we all share many things also.
sick and tired
My teacher read this book to us in class.It was the usual case of a white person disrespecting people of color and the people of color being peaceful and understanding.I'm so sick of reading books about how mean white people still can receive love and understanding.Why aren't white people nice to blacks if they're mean.It's just one more book telling people of color to continue to let whites walk all over them.

We love Hairy Maclary!
These books are all wonderful.We bought the entire series a number of years ago when we were living in London and have read one or more Hairy books every night for years.The vocabulary is wonderful, much more varied than you normally find with other books for young children, and the illustrations are terrific.I can't recommend this entire series highly enough.

Great fun for 2-yr-old (and her mommy!)
We've been reading the Harry Maclary books since my daughter was about nine months old, and they continue to be favorites at bedtime.This one (which I guess was the first one) has the usual list of characters, and we have the greatest time giving each his own voice and personality each time we read it.It's fun for me to try to make it different, and my daughter has great fun with it too.The book takes several characters who are chasing Harry Maclary home "with their eyes on the bone", and they gradually fall out of the chase for various reasons.Very cute!Highly recommended.

Fun illustrations, good repeating and rhymes, great early reading
These are great fun books, sly and funny which kids and adults can both enjoy. Lynley Dodds writes and illustrates this series of books, which I think began with this one and so you can find the same characters in other books too. The rhymes are great, and they are repeated so littlies quickly get the idea of what is coming next.

My son loved it
I bought the book because my 4-year-old son had been on the receiving end of some of the unfriendly behaviors that are the basis of the book. My son loves the book. Aside from the fact that he gets the author's premise (reasoning rather than reacting), he just genuinely enjoys it. He laughs out loud at some of the situations in the book. It didn't trigger the meaningful discussion I'd hoped we'd have about bullies (unbridled parental optimism on my part there!), but it's made for a lot of fun bedtime reads.

Shredderman, Secret Identity
I read the book Shredderman, Secret Identity. This book is really awesome and a good book to read. The author explains the book a lot by telling what the characters do and who they are. It also gives a lot of good details about what happens. It's kind of a book with suspension in it. This book is about a kid named Nolan who gets picked on by a class bully named Bubba Bixby. Everyone has a name from Bubba and his parents. Nolan's nickname is nerd. Because Nolan does not like him he decides to do something about it. I recommend this book to about 6th and 7th graders. The book is really easy to read because it doesn't have a lot of hard words and it's only about 100 pages or less. I read this book in about two days. This book is really cool though.

Awesome Book!
I'm 16 years old and I am in LOVE with the Shreddman books, the shred dude! Seriously. I'm the top of my class in IQ, been in honors for ever and I love this book. I got it from the library andcan read the book in around 20 minutes, but it got me laughing like I haven't laughed in a while and all of a sudden I feel energized and happy. It's better than yoga! So get this book!
brilliant!
This is a totally brilliant series that gets off to a great start in book one.Actually I jumped in on one of the later books and then came back to this one, but the books are sufficiently self-contained that it wasn't a problem.I totally loved the central character and I devoured the series.The books are quick reads and I couldn't get over how fun and funny they were.Theseries is done at four books, and the four books work very well together.I wish there were more coming, but at the same time, Van Draanen wraps the series up very well by the end of 4th book. ... Obsession with "Cool"
I was disappointed in this book:to be cool, this kid makes a list:wear jeans, wear shirts without collars, white underwear only, take the "ie" off your name, don't let your friends see your Mom kiss you, and do something to impress the bully out of bullying you.
Great book
I have been struggling to get my nine year old son to read. However, when I brought this book home, I could not get him to put it down. He read the entire book in one sitting and laughed outloud throughout the book. He loved the book and cannot wait to get more books by the same author. He could easily relate to the characters and situations in this book. This is a must buy for all third grade boys.

How to be cool.....
This was a nice little story about Robbie who wants to start off the new school year the right way.He begins to make a list of things he must do to make himself cool, such as getting jeans and changing his name.He is paired up to work with Bo, a bully who is repeating the third grade.Robbie, get scared, but when he faces his mother and simply tells her he would like some jeans and that he can walk to the bus stop by himself, she agrees.Read more
