Great book for kids and parents!
This book gave me a lot of good ideas when I took my daycare kids camping this summer.They liked most of the recipes, but we tailored some of them to their liking.It was a great book.

Simple Beginner book for Campfire Cooking
A good beginner book to give basic recipes and ideas for cooking on the campfire.The book does what I imagine it set out to do, giving starting point for people doing outdoor cooking with younger children such as parents, scout leaders, or teachers.

This is a fun book for kids, and has a lot of common sense easy recipes they can follow. It starts off by teaching the basics of building a campfire, especially the safety involved, and putting out the fire. It has sections on cooking on a grill, cooking in a pouch, and on a stick. If you havne't doen these it is hard to describe, since they do not mean an animal on a spit here. A lot of information
This book gave a lot of information and ideas.We liked using it!

Sweet As
I recieved this book in the mail... Then used it two hours later that is how useful it was for me... If I could give it 10 stars I would. It is written in a way that is easy to understand so that if you wanted to give it to a child you could, yet it is comprehensive enough for an adult... I would rate this as a good use of my money...

WOW!
I just bought this recently, and it is much better than I even expected. I have a bunch of camping books in my library, and this one is better than many more expensive adult books. It has great advice even for adults, but is indespensible for camping with kids. It teaches you how to build a fire safely, cooking on the fire, (great kid favorites recipes), dealing with bugs, how to pick a camp site, what kind of Lots of safety tips too. The fun drawings make this a pleasure as well. Read more

Learing how to catch fish as a kid is easier than I thought
I went fishing once when I was a kid, but I certainly did not know what I was doing.I caught a couple of fish, which we released, but had trouble getting the hooks out without really damaging the fish (yes, I have guilt over this; the reason for killing a fish would be to eat it).My kids have gone a couple of times with Granddad Nelson in the mountains of California and have all enjoyed success, but they were pretty much told where to stand and what to do and the only thing that mattered in the end was that my son was ticked that his younger sister caught the biggest fish (we have the photo to prove it).So we know virtually nothing about the art of fishing.Enter "The Barefoot Fisherman: A Fishing Book for Kids." Very well done!

great fun!
Originally written 100 years ago, this delightful book shows you how to enjoy the Great Outdoors. Divided seasonally, the author shows you, via illustrations and diagrams, how to make kites, bird houses, aquariams, boats,sleds, moccasins, shirts, and various camping utensils. For the more adventurous, he shows you how to construct bridges, dams, piers and outdoor dwellings of different kinds. He also provides tips for camping out in your own backyard.

I hardly know where to begin.Like the Boys' and Girls' Handybooks, this hefty little book is full of ideas from a bygone era.Written in 1906, the activities are not always the kind of things our kids can do today...but this is a book of IDEAS!While you might not want to camp in a swamp, this book will tell you how.That information might come in useful for another project someday.The book also has historical value--the vocabulary is sometimes quite dated--but that's part of the fun!Read more

Superb...
This is a great book! Dan Beard, one of the principal founders of the BSA, herein illustatrates several easy to build wilderness structures in an easy to read, sometimes humorous style. From lean-to's, shacks, log cabins, even tree houses; there's a wealth of practical information for any outdoorsman within these pages.

not worth the money
This book is a tiny, teeny, weeny little book - smaller than a Dr. Seuss book - for $21.NOT worth the money.I gave it two stars because it has a lot of nice pictures.However, the text is VERY simple - too simple for the eight-year-old I bought it for.Spend your money on something else.

I was an Eagle Scout as a boy, and now I'm the founding Scoutmaster of my sons' troop.As such, I was anxious to get a copy of this hard cover version.Baden-Powell's work is a classic and well worth the read.The problem with this edition is the Introduction by Elleke Boehmer.Without it, the book is a 5-star.Ms. Boehmer appears a non-believer.Reading her is like taking a pessimistic art critic along side while viewing an art gallery.Far more benefit (for all concerned) would occur without her input.For each positive she states about BP, she mentions a negative.She also spends just over two pages discussing homosexual tendencies (pp xxxii-xxxiii) within BP's works, something which is out of place in this work.I started to list several quotes, but I think one sums it up best of all from the back cover:"She has never been a scout, but she did once shake hands with Lady Baden-Powell at a jubilee celebration in South Africa."I guess that must make her an expert.

Perfect poetical treat for the camping kid
After serving as a girl scout camp counselor for a summer, the poetry in this book certainly has meaning to me.The poems are wonderfully supported by soft painted illustrations.The story behind the poetry is a girl and her family going on a camping trip together... maybe an annual event.Written in her point of view, there are images of the animals she sees, scenes from the campsite, interactions with her family, introspective reactions to nature and the trip home.

Great starter for pre-teens
A great book for pre-teens and their parents. It has ideas on how to involve your child in the planning of a camping trip. They tell you not to hesitate to make a trip first just to your own backyard, something that I always reccommend as a test run of your skills and your gear. And you can have repeat visits to the yard anytime you like, cause the kids just love it and it's easy on you. Naturally it has advice for longer trips into the real woods, from gear selection, to packing lists, how to pack it all in, how-to put it toghether, how will you cook, how to light a fire, and more. But it also has a great emphasis on what to do when you get there, how to plan fun for the kids, (or how to keep them busy) and includes nature activities, games, and songs. It also has some great but simple camping recipes. 64 pages with full-color illustrations. Try the other book from theses authors, "Cooking On A Stick", it is mostly recipes but a great book for any camping library.

My children and I were introduced to this book through a friend who'd heard the author speak.We've used several of the ideas in our latest camping trips and found it very useful.

Bringing The Outside In
This book truly brings nature to your fingertips.As a reader, I felt as if I was out in the wild, experiencing everything of which Paulsen wrote.With the descriptive settings and easy-to-relate-to tales, Paulsen makes the reader feel as if they have entered the woods along with the characters in the story.The essays on fishing and hunting in the northern woods are definitely his best work yet!This book is easy to follow, yet has very deep and interesting accounts. Paulsen writes about seasons in his hometown being determined by types of fish caught down by the dam, under the Ninth street bridge, or in frozen lakes, and not by dates on calendars.When fishing ends, hunting is the obsession for Paulsen and friends he calls "orphans of the woods."He explains, "When we were in the woods or fishing the rivers and lakes our lives didn't hurt." A Good and pretty book

This is a wonderful book that can keep children occupied for hours on end. It provides many activities that children can do alone or with their parents. Most of the materials required can be found in the home or outside. The children will learn valuable survival information from many of the activities.
