This tape is well orchestrated and narrated. My first grade class loves to read the book and listen at the same time. I recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars very pleased
I am so happy I bought this book on tape. My daughter is very entertained with it. We commute together every day. She really enjoys the story about the little girl with the sign on her door. It is actually pretty funny. I would recommend it to anyone!!!

Editorial Review

With very special cover illustrations by Peter Sís and anintroduction in each novel by the author, this boxed set of Madeleine L'Engle'smodern-day classic series in paperback is much welcome! L'Engle challengesconcepts of time, space, and the power of good over evil in each of her fourriveting novels. Sís's original new cover illustrations capture thehopeful innocence of the characters and the quirky cosmic tensions of theuniverse. In her introduction, L'Engle writes, "What a delight to see thesebeautiful new covers for the Time Quartet. It is another indication that storieshave a life of their own, and that they say different things to different peopleat different times. And it is an affirmation that story is true and takes usbeyond the facts into something far more real."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable by young and old alike!
The earth is surrounded by a sinister presence - a dark, foul fog that is the tool of an ultimate evil - whose ambition is to enslave the planet with the complete removal of free will. Three magical beings, Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which - witches, angels, demigods perhaps - appear to Margaret and Charles Wallace Murry and their friend, Calvin O'Keefe, to persuade them that it is their destiny to battle this evil on its own turf and to rescue Margaret and Charles Wallace's father. Dr Murry has been missing for some months and the kids learn that he has been captured by the evil while he was "tessering", traveling time and space in the course of his scientific research.

At first my teacher read it. She read the first chapter to us. It had me very excited to read on. So, this book taught me a lot. It kind of keeps you in suspence to.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hated it.
It seems that people either love it or hate it andI belong to the latter category. How did this become a classic???Having forced myself to read to the end I'm not going to waste anymore time - just read the other 1-star reviews - poor kids forced by their teachers to read this over-rated garbage. ... Editorial Review

Life is hard for poor Irish potato farmers, but 12-year-old Nory Ryanand her family have always scraped by... until one morning, Nory wakes to thefoul, rotting smell of diseased potatoes dying in the fields. And just likethat, all their hopes for the harvest--for this year and next--are dashed.Hunger sets in quickly. The beaches are stripped of edible seaweed, the shore isemptied of fish, desperate souls even chew on grass for the nourishment. As hercommunity falls apart, Nory scrambles to find food for her family. Meanwhile, the specter of America lurks, where, the word is, no one is ever hungry, andhorses carry milk in huge cans down cobblestone streets. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The English holocaust
It seems uniquely challenging. The idea of making a readable children's book out of something so bleak and depressing as the Irish Potato Famine.Yet as an author, Giff has never shied away from difficult subjects.Whether you're following the trials of a 1870 German immigrant to Brooklyn in "The House of Tailors", or a 1940's Hungarian escapee in "Lily's Crossing", Giff has become one of those go-to historical fiction writers. With an emphasis on immigration, emigration, and forced transplantation, her books strain to find a balance between absolute historical accuracy and something your ten-year-old would actually (willingly) pick up on their own.Personally, when I was ten years of age I wouldn't have picked up "Nory Ryan's Song" for all the gold in King Solomon's mines. For those children that have strong stomachs and even stronger nerves, however, the book is a distinctly well-written explanation of why many of us in America sport Irish-American heritage.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great historical fiction!
Most students know that the Irish potato famine killed millions of people, but they may not understand any more than that.Nory Ryan's Song takes students back to Ireland in 1845 and shows them what life was like. The oppression of the English was a terrible problem for the Irish at that time. The Great Hunger killed many, but it is also the reason that many Irish came to America. It took great strength for them to make the journey. It is an important book for children to read.It helps explain what really happened and what life was like for these people.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Ireland Tale -- a review by Kira, age 9
In Ireland in 1845, Nory's friends, the Neelys, can't pay the rent, so they get kicked out of their house! Nory wants to try to save the Neelys, but just as she can, they are gone. Now she must work for the scary Anna Donelly, while everyone's potatoes have just gotten poisoned by strange creatures from another world! Nory's family starts starving -- what can they do!

3-0 out of 5 stars Esperanza Rising
Esperanza Rising was a pretty good book. This book was basically about a Mexican girl who use to be rich but became poor. They lived on a huge ranch and owned a grape orchard. Sadly the night before her birthday Esperanza's father dies. After her father dies, her evil uncle takes over the ranch, and her and her mother become servants. The only way they could still live in their house was if her mother was to marry her brother inlaw. Esperanza's mother new that if she married him they wouldn't live a very good life. So now that they became servants they had to sneak from the ranch . They get in the back of a wagon and begin their journey to their new home. When they get there they go to their very small cabin. Esperanza and her mother had to work very hard and momma gets sick. Well I think that I am going to stop there so that I wont give any thing away. I do recommend this book though, you will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It made me cry!
It was such a great book!I could read it over again and again!I can't even imagine someone ever saying that they hated this book.I couldn't stop reading when I started the book.Sometimes I even read it when my Mom was talking to me.This book is very sad and exciting. It made it worth spending most of my time reading it!I would tell every one of my friends about this book and how I think they sould read it.If I was stranded on a deserted island and i could bring any two books in the whole world.I would choose Espeanza Rising and A Judy Blume book!If you like sad, exciting, and beautifuly written books, then this is the one for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Victoria's Review on Esperanza Rising
This book is about a young girl who is spoiled and has the best life that she can think of until some bad things start happening and her father dies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A revival of the series!
The previous years of the show has been a little dry. With Blackgaard dead, Jason off doing mission work outside the US, Jack and Johanne happily married, and Eugene and Katrina virtually Ignored, nothing was really happening on the show. Until now :) Kids' Radio is jammed with the singals of a Big Media Giant, someone breaks into Whit's End, a few kids run into a hacker on the Internet, and Jason returns to Odyssey. All of the sudden, things are ALIVE in Odyssey!! The series has abandoned the idea of split-episodes (the contraversial 15 minutes programs of the last few albums) and has started focusing on it's main characters for the last 13 years -- Whit, Tom and Connie. Plus, it's starting to sound fresh again...and few series, Radio-Tv or otherwise, can sound so alive and full of ideas after so long. So, hat's off to the new, Improved Adventures in Odyssey!! Keep it up!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Getting Better
Unlike the current trend of Adventures in Odyssey where the quality of the shows were going down, this album presents a small promise of a return to the normal Adventures in Odyssey writing. With the introduction of a new villian, and the start of some long term arc episodes, The Big Picture hopefully will mark the upswing in Odyssey writing. ... Editorial Review

William Golding's classic tale about a group of English schoolboys who are plane-wrecked on a deserted island is just as chilling and relevant today as when it was first published in 1954. At first, the stranded boys cooperate, attempting to gather food, make shelters, and maintain signal fires. Overseeing their efforts are Ralph, "the boy with fair hair," and Piggy, Ralph's chubby, wisdom-dispensing sidekick whose thick spectacles come in handy for lighting fires. Although Ralph tries to impose order and delegate responsibility, there are many in their number who would rather swim, play, or hunt the island's wild pig population. Soon Ralph's rules are being ignored or challenged outright. His fiercest antagonist is Jack, the redheaded leader of the pig hunters, who manages to lure away many of the boys to join his band of painted savages. The situation deteriorates as the trappings of civilization continue to fall away, until Ralph discovers that instead of being hunters, he and Piggy have become the hunted: "He forgot his words, his hunger and thirst, and became fear; hopeless fear on flying feet." Golding's gripping novel explores the boundary between human reason and animal instinct, all on the brutal playing field of adolescent competition. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my two favorite books
This amazing tale was actually written in response to a British novel where a group of young Brits recreate an idealic English home on a deserted island with no outside help.
5-0 out of 5 stars Should of been called Lord of the Cannibals...But I love it anyways!!!
This one of the first novels that I actually got through. I didn't quiteunderstand at first, but after I got to the middle of it, I starting getting it. Most people I know hate this book because the boys turn into cannibals, but hey! What's one suppose to do when standed on a on island in the middle of no where with no food? I really love this book, my two favorite characters are Jack and Ralph!
2-0 out of 5 stars Truly For High School Kids
I somehow graduated from high school -- a boys religious high school, no less -- without being assigned Lord of the Flies. So I decided to read the mother of all high school English books.

5-0 out of 5 stars My kid's love "Little House" books
I have 5 childern and do not get to read aloud the quanity of books I would like to, so we invest in audio. They can be enjoyed time and time again. My kids play the "Laura" books we own over and over. Great for long car trips or when layed up with illness too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story conitnues...
Little House On The Prairie is a longer read than Little House In The Big Woods and deals more with action and adventture. While the first book seemed to be a guide book on survival in the wild this book is more of a tale with Indians, bush fires and other dangers.Living on the prairie is not the same as living in the big woods, so we do learn some new things about prioneer life and the problems the family faced. In same ways the second book is superior to the first.
5-0 out of 5 stars Illustration of Life on the Frontier
After the Civil War, the Wilder family has decided to make a big move - join the migration to the frontier, from the little cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. The main character and author, Laura, tells about the difficulties and advantages of life on the praire. Even though the journey there is difficult, and, at time, tragic, the family is able to pull through, and arive in the praire of Kansas to make their new life and create their new adventures.

4-0 out of 5 stars It had tons of action!
I liked By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman because it has a lot action. It's set in 1849. The main characters names are Jack and Praiseworthy. The book starts on a ship that's racing another ship to California. Jack hides a pig so the cook can't make Sunday dinner out of the pig. Jack and Praiseworthy get robbed several times. They go to the mining camps and try to strike it rich. I like the part where Jack and Praiseworthy go propecting. I recommend this book to ages 9 and up. If you like adventure and the Gold Rush, you would like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I ground in a few acorns for flavor."
BY THE GREAT HORN SPOON! is written for younger readers but is a delightful light read even for adults, who will get through this book in one sitting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
By the Great Horn Spoon! is a wonderful and entertaining book for ALL ages. This book can be used in the classroom when covering the Gold Rush period or it can be read for leisure. The story is about a young lad and his dreams and quest for gold.He has a noble cause and he learns valuable lessons from an unexpected source.I would definitely highly recommend this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The most intense volume of AIO!!!
An old nemesis, a diabolical plot and a battle between the forces of good and evil - in Odyssey?! An unprecedented wave of criminal activity has broken over the town, and its citizens are stunned. Thefts, broken windows, graffiti...who on earth is behind this outbreak of Lawlessness?
5-0 out of 5 stars Darkness Before Dawn
this is the best A.I.O set ever. this set is very deep and makes for good discussion in summary: there is an out break of vandalism in odyssey. everyone thinks the bones of wrath are behind it. the church is hit. whits end is hit. jack has more weird dreames. jason gets an inspector to investigate the under- ground railroad tunnel under whits end. What he gets is the wicked Philip Glossman. Glossman has a scandal to have a recal election to kick tom out of office. we learn that Dr. Blackgaard is behind it. in " the return" dr. Blackgaard returns to odyssey to announce his candidacy for the election. Richard maxwell returns to odyssey to stop Blackgaard. maxwell finds out about the Dr's true plan: BLOW UP WHITS END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific - and it has depth
Those who have experienced the conclusion of the "Novacom Saga" recently have heard Adventures in Odyssey at it's best, but if absolute pure suspence is what you want, then I recommend this series. It has been building for a long time, every so often Dr. Regis Blackgaard would appear on the horizon, dark and sinister, first in Odyssey with his own "amusement house" for kids (and a nefarious effort to steal a top secret computer program from Mr. Whittaker-thwarted by Richard Maxwell who makes another appearance in this album)and then in Chicago where he actually kidnapped Connie, and finally in "A Name Not a Number" when he returned to Odyssey. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most moving books I have read in a long time!
So I had this crazy idea: I'm going to read the Newberry Awards books. I was at my fiancé's school and they had a poster of past Newberry Award books and I had this epiphany: I was going to take some time and just read great young adult books!
4-0 out of 5 stars Teamwork Pays Off
I really liked this book because it was about different kids that worked together to meet a common goal. The characters were kids that I could relate to, and the plot moved along so you won't get bored. I would like to read other books by this writer and see if they are as good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great writer
This is the second middle grade book by Konigsburg that I've read. She's such a wonderful writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The return of John Avery Whittaker!
When John Avery Whittaker returns from a lengthy stay in the Middle East, the entire town of Odyssey turns out for a joyous homecoming celebration complete with fanfare and fireworks. But for Jack, Whit's arrival means an uneasy reunion-and a tough decision about the future. Then, the phrase "Fools rush in" takes on a new significance for Eugene when he neglects to seek God's direction in his relationhip with Katrina.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's really good, awesome, spectacular.
If you've listen to to Adventures in Odyssey as long as I have, you'll LOVE this audio cassette. A special person (don't want to let you know who it is. It would spoil the surprise.)left Odyssey a few years ago and has FINALLY returned. Connie Kendall wanted to make this a SPECIAL day for this special person and instead of being at the airport, the ceremonies, ect. when this person arrived, she was just late for all of these things. She finnally tracked the special person down and he was asleep, do to exaustion, she was so sad, frustrated, mad, you get the point. She was cring, and she woke up the special person, she was so glad to hug the special person. If you want more information on Adventures in Odyssey, e-mail me at AWANABoy@aol.com Thanks! ... Editorial Review

Forced to leave her sunny Caribbean home for the bleak Connecticut Colony, Kit Tyler is filled with trepidation. As they sail up the river to Kit's new home, the teasing and moodiness of a young sailor named Nat doesn't help. Still, her unsinkable spirit soon bobs back up. What this spirited teenager doesn't count on, however, is how her aunt and uncle's stern Puritan community will view her. In the colonies of 1687, a girl who swims, wears silk and satin gowns, and talks back to her elders is not only headstrong, she is in grave danger of being regarded as a witch. When Kit befriends an old Quaker woman known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond, it is more than the ascetics can take: soon Kit is defending her life. Who can she count on as she confronts these angry and suspicious townspeople? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A bewitching story
This is one of my favorite books. I first read this book while in middle school and have re-read it so many times that I can recite some of the passages! The story of the girl who leaves her island home and must adjust to the harsh New England environment struck a chord with me, as I was a military kid and always moving from place to place. This story is about a girl who finds herself in a new environment that goes against everything she has ever learned or experienced, and she must learn who she is in order to survive this new land. It's also a romance story, and an intriguing story that shows what can happen when people become so closed-minded about what is "right" and "proper" that they refuse to look past a person's supposed subversive actions in order to really see or understand that person.Highly recommended reading.

I read the witch of blackbird pond.I didnt like or dislike this book.It had fantastic chapters an awful chapters. The most awfu scenes in this book are where everyone gets judgemental. The overall message in this book wasshard to figure out but i thought it was: never let someone judge you for who you appear to be.I would recomend this book to people who like adventurous historical fiction books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great decent family time fun
After getting hooked to a radio book I heard almost 3 years ago I decided to look for other Christian based audio book stories that I could enjoy with my son.I bought this for him and we have heard several so far.The stories are played out in a very real and tangible way.We have sat in bed with our eyes closed and it feels like you're in a theater.Of course it helps if you have surround sound but sounds just as good if not.Great for long trips in the car or to just play on a rainy day at home snuggled under the covers. This type of story telling awakens the imagination of children in a way that TV will never!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining
Listening to the book in full theater format was very interesting and enjoyable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Narnia Radio Theatre - almost perfect
I do NOT enjoy audio books - I generally find them long and boring and would much rather use my own imagination than some actor's choice of cadence and emphasis. On the other hand, I loved (mostly) the BBC radio productions of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" which have become long road trip standards for our family.I have never found a comparable production until I discovered the The Chronicles of Narnia. The voices of the actors were VERY well done(with one exception) and the background sound effects and music were excellent and I found the connective narrative enough without being too much.On the other hand, I have read of the Narnia books so I may be unconsciously bridging gaps. Still, my husband, my son and my grandchildren have only read/seen "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" before hearing this set and had no problem with the other books, so the narrative is probably sufficient.I have two issues with the series which is why I awarded only 4 stars:

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series
Great series for young and old looking for a mental shut-down for bed book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting look into Martin's past and a wonderful read that takes a look at big issues. Highly recommended
The sixth Redwall novel, Martin the Warrior is the story of young Martin's imprisonment by, escape from, and war against the Badrang the Tyrant, ruler of Marshank. Martin is a young mouse, the son of Luke the Warrior. He is captured and enslaved by Badrang, and one night, after violent insurrection, tied up to suffer through a raging storm. It is then he meets Rose, a maiden mouse from the peaceful sanctuary of Noonvale whose brother Brome has also been captured by Badrang. Martin, Rose, and Brome arrange from an escape from Marshank, promising the other slaves that they will one day come back to free them all and to destroy Badrang and his fortress forever. With the help of a roving band of circus performers and a mass of willful slaves, and across a journey through the coastal lands, Brome and Martin each struggle to stay alive, build an army, and return to destroy Badrang. This is a throughly enjoyable installment of the Redwall series, Martin the Warrior provides anxiously-awaited background to Martin's character as he discovers and refines his fighting spirit, experiences peace in Noonvale, and forms a deep friendship with Rose. The book is exciting, the characters (particularly those of Martin, the warrior Felldoh, and the peaceful Brome) are realistic and inspiring, and the book tackles some of the ethical and personal problems of war and the warrior's life that the other Redwall books overlook. It is a great read, a logical lead up to later Redwall books and to the building of Redwall itself, and one of the better books in this series.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best one!
I love the Redwall books because the charictors are great and there is a ton of action. This one is the best book because of how much is happening. Friends turn to enemys and enemys turn to friends. This book is also a tear jerker because if all the deaths but I love it anyway! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Donald Zinkoff is one of the greatest kids you could ever hope to meet.He laughs easily, he likes people, he loves school, he tries to rescue lostgirls in blizzards, he talks to old ladies. The only problem is, he's a loser.Until fourth grade, Zinkoff's uncontrollable giggling in class, sloppyhandwriting, horrible flute playing, bad grades, clumsiness, and ineptitude atsports go largely unnoticed. When he blows a race for his team, however, histransition to loserdom is complete: "[Loser] is the word. It is Zinkoff's newname. It is not in the roll book." Fortunately, he doesn't really notice. 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books i've ever read!!
In this book there is a boy named Donald Zinkoff. He has just now started the first grade. He is not fitting in very well he does everything that he is told to do by the teacher and he is always getting picked on and teased so school was not his favorite part of the day. He has a big problem where he has no friends and is not fitting in he is being made fun of and teased very much. I think that his book is a good book and i recomend that you should read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loser
The title of my book is Loser by Jerry Spinelli. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. The theme is to not bully. This book addresses bullying in a new way for me. I have always known that bullying someone can really hurt their self esteem, but Zinkoff was unaware of his treatment. Sometimes Zinkoff knew that other kids thought he was weird but it didn't ruin his life. He is more interested in the Nine Hundred Block of Willow. This street is where he met Claudia, a little girl who wears a leash. This street is also where the waiting Man lives. He sits and just waits for his brother to come back from the war that was 35 years ago. Jerry Spinelli has also written the book Stargirl in addition to Loser. These books are similar. Both main characters are the outcasts. Zinkoff is the main character of Loser. He has a sister named Polly. His best friend in 2nd grade was Andrew. Then, when Andrew moved, Zinkoff asked Hector to be his new best friend. They were only friends for a little bit. Hector just never answered the phone when Zinkoff called and never wanted to play. Their relationship was over pretty fast. Hobin was also a character in this book. He told Zinkoff he wasn't good at anything and this was the 1st time everyone, including Zinkoff, realized that he was a loser. The main conflict in the story was that Zinkoff needed to be accepted, not for himself or his self esteem, but to prove to others that he is just the same as they are. Zinkoff is naturally bad at everything. He never wins anything. He had only ever received one A in his life, and when he did all his classmates called him "Z man" the whole day. He then realized that they were blowing it way out of proportion and mocking him. His team also lost on field day because Zinkoff was the last person to finish the race in the relay and came in last. All these little things Zinkoff did made the conflict so much worse. The climax is when Zinkoff goes to middle school and isn't just a loser He is a nobody. No one even thought he was worth making fun of any more. I can't tell you the rest, but I can say it's worth reading to the end. I completely recommend this book. It gave me a better understanding of the best and right way to handle bullies. I give it 4 out of 5 stars!
