5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
What an amazing, thorough, comphrensive guide to everything Star Wars.NOTHING is left out.You get not only in depth profiles of every major character, but every OTHER character in the universe. It's so detailed that they break down each PART of each weapon, ship, etc.For someone like myself who isn't the biggest Star Wars geek (but wanting to learn more), this is a godsend. There are many, many, hardcore fans out there that can reference almost anything and anyone to do with Star Wars.Well, now you can too, and you don't have to see the films 3245 times to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars No "blog" but who cares...
Very contempory with updated word list and the extra photos, diagrams, etc. etc. etc. make this a fine choice for kids of all ages from 2 to 92.I am especially happy they included the 'hoopoe' in the bird category. We have many here in Thailand where I live.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
My daughters are in the third grade and, we have found this dictionary to be very helpful. It is bright and colorful but, it contains quite a bit of information as well. It helps them not only when they are writing something (to look up the spelling of a word) but also to understand the meaning of words. It gives parts of speech, different tenses, and pronunciation of the word as well. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to buy a dictionary for children. I had bought the Scholastic First Dictionary also but, honestly, we did not use that one much at all. The Children's Dictionary is my pick, for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
My son is in 3rd grade. Every week he has to read a new story & learn a list of words from that story. Yesterday, I received the dictionary. Paging through it, it's very easy follow. Every word that was on his list was in the dictionary & the definations were perfect for him to understand. My son also said that they use the same dictionary in his classroom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for new arrivals
I purchased this book for a new Mexican friend, who recently moved to the U.S. for two years and speaks practically no English, while I know a smattering of Spanish. We've found it to be invaluable in helping us communicate. When it's obvious that she isn't understanding me, I can turn to the appropriate page--the kitchen, for example--and point to the picture, and she can do the same. Then we work on her pronunciation of the English word. I will probably purchase another one for myself to help me strengthen my Spanish skills. I would also consider the other language titles to correspond with those my sons are studying in school. The format is user-friendly, the color illustrations are happy, and the categories of words are vast and extremely practical--especially helpful to someone struggling to get by in a new country. My friend showed the book to her ESL teacher and was very proud when the instructor recommended the book to the rest of the class!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture dictionary
What makes this dictionary so great is that it is not in alphabetical order and it is based on themes. For example, there is a classroom theme on a page and all of the words that have to do with what is in a classroom. Also, I like the fact that their are numbers next to the object and then all of the words in Spanish and English are at the bottom half of the page. This allows you to cover up all of the words and quiz yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Neat Dictionary!
I am in high school and was in serious need of a decent dictionary.I didn't want to spend a fortune either.I saw this dictionary and gave it a try... I LOVE IT!Great pictures and nice quality.Very helpful! My friend ended up buying one also and enjoys it as much as I have. I highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any student library
My son is 10 and in fourth grade. We use this dictionary just about everyday for studying poetry. So far, every word we've looked up has been there and with enough explanation to really make sense. We looked up the word "tread" - there were several definitions (about 4 inches worth), but each gave a sentence for context, which helped him pick out the right definition to apply. We also looked up "limerick" - the definition given was complete in that it actually included the rhyming scheme used, which was not included in two other dictionaries we have. There are color pictures and the the writing is large enough for him to read.It was also very reasonably priced. We are very happy with this Dictionary; we liked it so much we bought the American Heritage Thesaurus to go with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I stayed up late last night reading my daughter's dictionary!
My six year old needed a dictionary to look up words for her Junior Great Books homework. At first, I was drawn to dictionaries written for 8-10 year olds. They had larger print and flashier, more colorful pictures.Unfortunately, they didn't do the job of providing definitions for the unfamiliar words we needed to define (this week we needed to find tun, puncheon, bewail, and beadle.)I was forced to look at dictionaries aimed at an older audience and found that many were just not visually appealing.I didn't want a bland reference book that would be opened as little as necessary.I wanted something worth flipping through on a rainy day.

Editorial Review

In evaluating a children's dictionary, there are two test words wealways check first: "e-mail" and "iguana." After all, if "e-mail" doesn't appearin a dictionary, how up-to-date can it be? And iguanas, well, what kid doesn'twant to read all about this "very large tropical American lizard with a ridge oftall scales along its back"? We are happy to report that this fine dictionary isabove and beyond our gold standard. Not only are there definitions for each ofthe test words, there are illustrations for each, as well! This 912-pageillustrated dictionary is packed with great information, including world maps onthe inside covers, an easy-to-use how-to guide, and a reference section withfacts and maps of the continents, pictures of flags from countries around theworld, U.S. presidents and vice presidents, pronunciation guides, signs andsymbols, and lots more. Sandwiched between this wealth of facts and figures are846 pages of definitions with DK's trademark crisp, clear photographsillustrating many of the words. One of the handiest features in this volume isthe multicolored alphabet running down the outer edges of every single page, with the featured letter highlighted for easy reference when flipping through. So get out there and e-mail all your iguana friends about this terrificreference guide! 4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
I ordered this for my son who homeschools. We are doing 3rd 4th grades combined next year and this dictionary is perfect for elementary reference skills. He likes the colorful pictures and I think that the alphabet tabs on the page edge will be very useful to him when looking up words.Quite a nice book for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great dictionary
This is a great dictionary for kids. I received it in first grade, and it was used extensively in the past years. It has colorful photos illustrating various words, and the print is large enough for a young child to read.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMuist Have for Parents
Most DK products for children are outstanding and this is one of them. Well illustrated and comprehensive. It is a large hard back, not a small desktop reference. It is for third graders and up. The type is small and hard to read for children in lower grades. But my first grader loves the book because it is rich in features that fascinate him even though it is hard for him to read. He enjoys the flag section in the back and he enjoys the first rate gazetteer also in the back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for!!
I was looking for a child's dictionary and I had two choices picked out. The choices were this one and the Nick Dictionary which I thought my son would like much better but he chose this one. He likes it!! Yesterday hefinished his homework as fast as he could to look at it. Here are some thingsthat I like about it:(Nice) Colored pictures, Easy to understand definitions, Atlas pages, Information about the 50 states including the capital, state flag, flower, and state bird, Presidents of the united states to Clinton, The amount of words in this dictionary I think there are 33,000 words in here. I think this dictionary will last him for awhile. If you are looking for a child's dictionary I think this one would be the perfect choice!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've seen, by far.
I reviewed all the Children's Dictionaries I could find before selecting this one. It is a beautiful book. Word definitions are clear and easy to understand. Illustrations are colorful and plentiful. Supplementary information is useful and presented in an interesting format. This is one dictionary that is fun just to sit down and read! The CD ROM is also marvelous. My child loves playing the educational word games on it and so do it. There are several varieties of games and different levels of difficulty. The only drawback here is that the CD ROM cannot be used on Mac computers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Agreement!
I have to voice agreement with those who praise this as the best but I wonder how much of our love for the book is because it has sat on our desks for so many years and is the first place we go to check something!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Concise, and Perfect for Handy Reference
The Middle Liddell, as distinguished from the practically useless Little Liddell and the unwieldy Big Liddell, is the best reference work for beginning to intermediate students of Greek.I always advise learners to get this dictionary. It is not that much bigger or more expensive than the Little Liddell, but it is vastly more useful.I also make a point of advising beginners not to get the Big Liddell for everyday use.Even professional classicists use the Middle Liddell for its clarity and conciseness, wading through the enormity of the Big Liddell only when necessary.I'M NOT KIDDING.Start here.Every learner gets the Big Liddell, thinking, "Better too much information than not enough," and they always regret their decision.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fair as a star when only one/Is shining in the sky
Dictionaries, however much we feel the need for them, always have to be handled with a certain amount of caution. Anyone involved in the compilation of such a work of reference has to be a jack of rather too many trades for total reliability. In even the best modern English dictionaries the derivation of words can often be seen to be dubious or even plain wrong by someone who has the requisite academic linguistic grounding. Such a grounding is infrequent, those working on the chain-gangs producing the dictionary are often not aware that there is anything lacking, but the general public are prone to believe that everything in so august a publication must flow directly from some fount of all wisdom and knowledge. Lewis and Short's Latin dictionary, the standard work of its kind for English-speaking readers of Latin, exhibits at one point the glaring and elementary error of stating that the feminine adjective Libyssa, Latinised from Greek, has some corresponding masculine formation Libyssus, and when I last saw the book nobody seemed to have picked the error up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and parents
Most DK products for children are outstanding and this is one of them. It is a beginner's dictionary for Second and Third graders although my First Grader, who is an advanced reader uses it extensively. It has a section devoted to how to use the dictionary which is well explained and easily understandable for the student. From it a student learns that each entry tells what part of speech the word is (i.e. "noun"), how it is pronounced (used in the Dictionary only on some hard words) , other forms of the word, the plural, antonyms, comparisons, tenses, and related words, as well as a sample sentence. It also has a section on parts of speech "All About Words" which is well written, although the terms used to describe some parts of speech may not be the same terms used in different schools. For example, the dictionary describes some verbs as "Helping Verbs" where others describe them as "Linking verbs."
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Kid's Dictionary!
This dictionary by Dorling Kindersley is just what a childs reference book should be.It is sturdy and brightly attractive and my 4 year old daughter often asks me to sit down with her and just look at the various pictures and tell her what word goes with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
I could not expect anything more from a thesauras. This has all the words I, through my preteen years, have needed, without boggling my mind with lots of words that I never try to use.I don't feel overwhelmed, but I DO find the information I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars How can I describe this Thesaurus
This thesaurus is:5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary Teacher Prizes This Book!
_The_Clear_and_Simple_Thesaurus_Dictionary is the most practical thesaurus I have found for use with my fourth- and fifth-grade students. Unlike many thesauruses, it is formatted in a style that students (and adults!) willfind familiar and easy to use. While not as comprehensive in scope as thosedesigned for college use, this thesaurus allows students the satisfactionof finding synonyms or associated words for almost any word they mightneed. I had not found this to be true of other "beginning"thesauruses, which was a frustration to both my students and to me. Thisgem was a major find, and is now in regular use in my classroom. I highlyrecommend it to any teacher of intermediate or junior high age students, aswell as to parents who want a truly helpful resource for their school-agechildren. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely useful!
extremely useful for those who have Chinese as their mother language and have instrests in learning English, espcially for those Chinese who just arrive Ameria. you can find almost all the nouns in English you may meet during daily life. this book will expediate your English learning process.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but limited
This is an easy to use picture dictionary organized around themes, such as homes, food, feelings, etc. The illustrations are clear and colorful. There are two big drawbacks, however, the first and biggest being that there is no pinyin used, so a Westerner has no idea whatsoever about how to pronounce the Chinese word, although phonetic spellings for the English words are listed in the index. The second is that the "old style" characters are used, not the simplified versions. This book is definitely for Chinese students learning English but of very limited use for English speakers wanting to learn Chinese. As an ESL teacher in China recently, I found I only used this book as a last resort, when explanations of various words proved impossible, and once when I was teaching a lesson on homes. This book is a useful supplement, but I'm going to try to find something with pinyin when I return to China to teach again.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT for people trying to learn Chinese
I am trying to learn Chinese, and in seeing my toddler learn English by repeatedly looking at picturebooks, I thought a picture dictionary in Chinese would be a good way to learn every day objects in Chinese.Unfortunately, this book has the English word and the Chinese IN CHINESE CHARACTERS.NO pinyin, no bopomofo pronounciation. For the non-Chinese reader, you'll have to look up every single word. So, though this book may be good for Chinese students learning English, it is of limited usefulness to students learning Chinese.Frankly, I think this is an extremely stupid mistake by the publishers of this book. The editors should be flogged! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Crazy and Wild
This book's not your average Joe. It contains so many idioms it will make your head spin. That's a plus and a minus. It doesn't go into a ton of detail. But it fills the bill if you are teaching a class with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching idioms!
Not only does this book give a definition of the idiom, it tells of the origin! With that information you can answer all the why questions you get from students. This will be a valuable resource in any intermediate classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for English Language Learners
I've used Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms for two years. I introduce it as part of bell work activity. It's a time saver so I can occupy learners while I check admit slips and complete attendance. Students copy the sample sentence. If the sentence doesn't give a clear meaning-usage, I modify it, but the text still remains enormously useful because I give the students the meaning(s)and origin(s) Terban's research provides. I work with English Language Learners. Ironically students sometimes remember the meaning(s) and origins better than the content of the rest of the period when I quiz them. At least that's what my research reveals. I highly recommend this text for any teachers who work with elementary, middle school, and high school. In fact, I use this text for 11th and 12th graders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful spell-checker for grades 1-6
We have over 300 reference books for our children on various topics and still go to the library weekly for reading books. This book has remained on our shelves because it is so easy to reference.Unlike a dictionary, which is voluminous and printed in a font so small you can barely read it, this dictionary has just the words, listed alphabetically under it's correct spelling, as well as the most commonly misspelled version, so even the worst speller can find it by sounding it out.The font is easily read, about a size 12.The words are separated into syllables with the stressed syllable in bold, which is also very helpful with pronunciation. The pages are made of high quality paper and in color, which is easy on the eyes.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much easier to use than a dictionary
I bought this for my 5th grader and he tells me it is much easier to use than a regular dictionary.I know that it is easier for me to get him to look up words he needed to spell than it was when he had only a dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginning writers
I got this for my 6 year old daughter and it has given her so much independence in her writing homework. It has cut down on "mom, how do you spell....."It is an excellent reference for any child.Very easy to use. It's a great confidence builder too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great buy
I bought this dictionary for my 6th grader and she has found it most useful.I have been using it too!
5-0 out of 5 stars More than 100,000 entries providing authoritative definition
Now in a fully revised and illustrated edition specifically designed for students in grades 9 to 11, Merriam-Webster's School Dictionary is an essential, core, and thoroughly "kid friendly" reference. With more than 100,000 entries providing authoritative definitions, spellings, and pronounciations, more than 1,000 clear illustrations and tables, and over 15,000 useage examples, the Merriam-Webster' School Dictionary is a crystal clear, easy-to-use resource that presents solid information without relying on excessively small font size to strain young eyes. Also very solidly recommended is the Merriam-Webster's Intermediate Dictionary (0877795797, $17.95) for middle school students in grades 5 to 8.
5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST!
My students and I constantly go through the dictionary finding possible and impossible words and this dictionary has been the one to always have the information we need in a way that we were able to understand (It also hard for the teacher sometimes). Many times when you use a dictionary thedefinition is stated in words that you have to lookup again anyway.Thisis the one you and your children will always be able to understand quickly! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An essential kids dictionary
I am a homeschooling Mom and we use it every day! Great pictures. Only slight drawback is that not every word we need is listed in it - most are though. Althogether a good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 1st Dictionary - 1st-4th grades
My review is based on the 2003 version. This version must be vastly improved over earlier reviews, as earlier reviews said it had no pronunciation guide. This version is great! It has blue text for the word.Short, concise definitions and a pronunciation guide at the end.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well laid out. Good for the younger students.
There are many things I love about this dictionary. Number one is the way it is put together; easy to read text, plenty of eye-catching pictures and artwork, guidewords conspicuously typeset to make locating entries easier, homographs, inflected forms, and example sentences that show use in context.
