My daughter and I never got tired of reading this book
When she was young, this was one of my favorite books that I read to my daughter. I never got tired of telling her how great she would be when she got older. She also loved hearing it, the rhythm of the words never failed to keep her attention. I read her the entire collection of Dr. Seuss books in the local public library, and this was without question one of her three favorites. As I watch her go through life, I can't help but believe that some of the optimism for success that she possesses is a residual of hearing the words in this book.

While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.) A review of the Vinyl Bath Book edition only!
Since my 7-month-old still thinks books are for putting in your mouth, I've been buying him bath books. I bought this one sight unseen from Amazon, and as much as I love the classic "One Fish, Two Fish," I was a little disappointed. First, the book is small, even for a bath book (about 4x6 inches -- the "8.3 x 4.8" dimensions in the Amazon description are just plain WRONG). Second, the book was shorter than I expected. It consists only of the first 8 pages of the original "One Fish." Of course, the baby doesn't know how abridged the book is, so he enjoys it. And the colors are bright, the printing is sharp, and the overall package is high-quality and holds up to lots of handling. But there's not much there to read to him.

Best Children's Book
The book of green eggs and ham teaches us all a valued lesson on never judgeing a book by it's cover. Even though the main character tries to convince himself of not trying green eggs and ham, when he finally does he actually really likes it. This being a perfect example of not being prejudice.

I love this book
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

Dr. Seuss gives fair warning to anyone brave enough to read along with the Fox in Socks, who likes to play tongue-twisting games with his friend Mr. Knox. "Here's an easy game to play. Here's an easy thing to say.... New socks. Two socks. Whose socks? Sue's socks." But Mr. Fox Socks isn't about to let Knox off so easy. Soon Goo-Goose is choosing to chew chewy gluey blue goo, while tweetle beetles battle with paddles in a puddle (in case you were wondering, that's called a "tweetle beetle puddle paddle battle"). Mr. Knox gets exasperated: "I can't blab such blibber blubber! My tongue isn't made of rubber." But he catches on to the game before it's all through. it grew on me
When we first bought this book for my then two-year old daughter, I could barely get through it the first time.I didn't much like it.That's probably because I was so busy trying to say the words it, I couldn't pay attention to what was actually happening.Since then, the book has grown on me, and my now three-year old daughter loves it, as well.After reading the book aloud a gazillion times, I can now say it almost without getting my tongue twisted, and my favorite part is the ending, where Knox finally gets his "revenge" for what Fox has put him through.

Dr. Seuss is great...
The other review complaining about how it is shortened is just silly. Yes, the original is longer and my toddler finds it more entertaining- but when we first got this board book, ds wanted to read it several times a day. He still likes it read to him. It is perfect to start babies off on Dr. Seuss.

Lovingly reconfigured for tiny tots just learning to enjoy books!
Yes, this is an abridged version. But it's not mutilated. The abridgement was done very sensitively, and if you didn't know better, you'd think it was just as Dr Seuss wrote it. It really captures his joyful "voice" and his distinctive lilting rhymes.

Perfect for any age
My daughter is just 2 years old and she's been making me read it to her for about 6 months now. Obviously it'll help her read in the future, but I want her to have fun with books. And this is the perfect book to start off with, even if she can't read yet.

I worked with a little girl (ELL) who already had her basic reading skills; phonemic awarness, letter recognition and knowing what to do with words (in print).She just couldn't seem to read (even in her first language) with the level of fluency required for a student to pass from K- to First grade.This book captured her attention and we worked on the book in sections, first we read the section, then she had it as "homework".Each week when I returned to her home to work with her she would read both her "homework" and the preceeding section(s) in the book until at last she could read the entire book.This is the first hard back book, that she has ever read completely by herself so I have purchased this as a gift to her. ... Heed the Warning!
The Lorax is another book by Seuss with a powerful message within its pages. Its message is more overt and obvious to the reader than other Seuss books. Simply stated, we must take care of the natural resources around us or they could be forever lost. The main character in the story is filled with greed at the prospect making and selling more Thneeds. He continually ignores the Lorax's warnings. For a while, he and his family are very successful and prosperous, but in time the prophetic warnings come to pass. The trees are all gone, the air is black with smog, and the water is thick with sludge. For me, the Lorax represents those in our society who put themselves on the front lines to protect our environment. Many ridicule them and call them "Tree Huggers!" But, we should think twice before we dismiss their warnings. We have already seen many of the parallels between this book and reality occur.

Baby's Favorite Book
This is a wonderful collection of Dr. Seuss stories. My kid loves to read and re-read the classics such as 'The Grinch' and the more offbeat stories like 'Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book'. The essays are also fun to read while looking at the original artwork.
nice collection
This book is marketed for children, but it's better suited to adults who want a collection of stories without buying all the individual books, and who like the accompanying essays (they are fun!). It's less suited for children due to its unwieldly size, including the difficulty of opening the book flat. It would work fairly well for reading to one or two children sitting next to the reader, but for reading to a group, where showing the pages is vital, this volume is too awkward to handle. I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't include Fox in Sox and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

Oh, the wonderful things Mr. Brown can do! In this "Book of Wonderful Noises," Mr. Brown struts his stuff, as he imitates everything from popping corks to horse feet ("pop pop pop pop" and "klopp klopp klopp," respectively) while inviting everyone to join him in the fun. Young readers who are still learning their sounds and letters will get a wacky workout as they follow along with the very serious-looking, squinty-eyed Mr. Brown. Whether it's eggs frying in a pan or a hippo chewing gum, the skillful Mr. Brown just keeps topping himself, with a "sizzle sizzle" or a "grum grum grum." A favorite in our house!
My son got this book from grandma when he was a little over a year old.It was an automatic favorite!It starts with "Oh the wonderful sounds Mr. Brown can do.He can sound like a cow.He can go moo moo."It has pictures that are engaging for their simplicity and a rhyme that is flowing but varied so it doen't get boring.My son loved learning the noises and now he says them along with me when I read.I've even caught him looking at this book and saying the noises to himself.He's now 2 and we still read this one often (and I have it memorized).I highly recommend this book.I just don't know how you couldn't like it!

Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You
This was for my daughter who is 11 months old. I liked it because it is a board book and she cant rip the pages.

What a fun book!
My son loves this book -- and so do we!My husband and I have really enjoyed reading this book, which is great because we read it everyday.The boardbook design is perfect for young children because the pages can't be easily ripped up or torn, and if a little drool gets on a page or two, it can be wiped off with a damp rag.

oh the thinks you can think
I love it because you get to finish fast and their like riming words.I love riming words they always make me interested in the book.they say right and then they change the wordto light.Those are changing words.I love when they put the words they are supossed to put and then they change them.It was a different Dr.Suess book it was "The Thinks You Can Think" it was really incredible.

Very cute book to get your little one to think!
What a cute book!This book greatly inspires little ones to use their imaginations and think up all sorts of things.This book also reminds me of a story in Seuss' book, "I can Lick 30 Tigers Today," in which the Cat-in-the-Hat's daughter uses her imagination to think up a Glunk.That's a pretty funny story too.Anyway, in this tale, there really isn't a storyline at all.Just page after page of silly drawings of things that don't exist mostly (like how much water can 55 purple elephants drink?).My little one recognizes Seuss' drawings and always tells me that's 55 Hortons drinking water!Or, how about "schlopp.Schlopp, schlopp, beautiful schlopp.Beautiful schlopp with a cherry on top."And what on earth is a jibboo anyway?A bird's head on a human body, walking down a dark street?This book is filled with very silly things such as this, none of which make sense, but all of which cause little ones to use their imaginations.It's a great time reading this one aloud and ours gets read nightly.

"Life" magazine published a report in May of 1954 about illiteracy among American school children.One of the key things in this article was that children were not inspired to read because their books were boring, which is to say the world of Dick, Jane and Spot.So it came to pass that Theodore Geisel's publisher sent him and a list of 400 words that had to be cut to 250 (because that was how many words it was believed a first grader could understand before their heads exploded or something), and then write a book.At this point in the history of the world Geisel was best known as the creator of Gerald McBoing-Boing, an animated character for which he won an Oscar.The book, of course, was "The Cat in the Hat," which used 220 of those words, and for the rest of his life Dr. Seuss wrote books that were part of the Beginner Books and Bright and Early Books series, which proudly allowed young kids to proclaim "I Can Read It All By Myself."Consequently, Dr. Seuss was one of the major forces in American literacy in the last half of the 20th century.Read more

Surely among the most lovable of all Dr. Seuss creations, Horton the Elephant represents kindness, trustworthiness, and perseverance--all wrapped up, thank goodness, in a comical and even absurd package. Horton hears a cry for help from a speck of dust, and spends much of the book trying to protect the infinitesimal creatures who live on it from the derision and trickery of other animals, who think their elephant friend has gone quite nutty. But worse is in store: an eagle carries away the clover in which Horton has placed the life-bearing speck, and "let that small clover drop somewhere inside / of a great patch of clovers a hundred miles wide!" Horton wins in the end, after persuading the "Who's" to make as much noise as possible and prove their existence. This classic is not only fun, but a great way to introduce thoughtful children to essentially philosophical questions.How, after all, are we so sure there aren't invisible civilizations floating by on every mote? How A Birthday Should Be
I love reading this to my child as much as I loved having it read to me when I was a child. The book is joyous and lets you enjoy the fantasy of just how a birthday should be. Reading it on birthdays is a tradition in our house and helps us to relive the fantasy each year.

Never to Old for Dr. Seuss
Found this book in the waiting room at the kids Doctor's Office. Myoldest started reading it out-loud and was enjoying it so much that he asked for the book as a gift for his 16th birthday! Goes to show that one is never to old for Dr. Seuss!!

Childhood Favorite! More than meets the eye!
The Cat in the Hat at first glance may seem like a nonsensical text meant merely to amuse its readers. If you stop and ponder this story of two children left at home alone one afternoon, you soon realize there is a more powerful message than first meets the eye. The children clearly know the difference between right and wrong, but with the slightest influence from the Cat, they easily give in. I believe the fish represents their conscience. They choose to ignore its warning time and again, and therefore, find themselves in a mountain of mess. Before the story's end, they are able to right the wrongs, but we as readers are left with this thought and question: "Then our mother came in and she said to us two, "Did you have any fun, tell me what did you do?" Should we tell her about it? Now what SHOULD we do? What would you do if your mother asked you?" (Seuss, 60-61).

This book is fun for kids and great for a keepsake!
My husband had this book as a child in the late 70's, and my sister found the same book in the store and bought it for my oldest son about 5 years ago.It has been so fun for my son to fill out the book.We still have Daddy's book to look at from when he was little, so that is fun!I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting their child to have an enjoyable and interactive activity.It also serves as a wonderful keepsake for later on.They have fun things in it, such as "How many steps is it to the mailbox?" and "How many windows are in your house", as well as questions about what you want to do when you grow up and your interests.Love this book!

So much fun packed into a happy yellow book!
I had wonderful memories of this book as a child and wanted to bestow the same on my three year old. We've have great fun counting spoons, talking about our favorite animals, and getting quirky autographs (i.e., a man over 6'3"). A classic. Great family time too.

Poor Horton. Dr. Seuss's kindly elephant is persuaded to sit on an egg while its mother, the good-for-nothing bird lazy Maysie, takes a break. Little does Horton know that Maysie is setting off for a permanent vacation in Palm Springs. He waits, and waits, never leaving his precarious branch, even through a freezing winter and a spring that's punctuated by the insults of his friends. ("They taunted.They teased him. They yelled 'How Absurd! Old Horton the Elephant thinks he's a bird!'") Further indignities await, but Horton has the patience of Job--from whose story this one clearly derives--and he is rewarded in the end by the surprise birth of... an elephant-bird. Read more

Horton is Always a Good Choice
I grew up listening to this book on a record.These days, rhymes, like Mother Goose, are not taught in school or pre school like they once were.I teach ELL but even English speakers are having more difficulty with hearing rhymes which has a direct correlation to their phonemic awarness development.This is one of the major components of pre-reading readiness.Horton also is a good example of empathy and we certainly could use more of this in our public schools among the students!

HortonHatches The Egg
Hacton the Elephant and the egg and that lazy momma bird.Oh momma bird just waiting to tricksome animal into watching her egg .Then comes Mr,Elephant .Oh poor Mr.Elephant gets stuck sitting on a tree for months. This book is a real good book .I would give it a thumbs up.

One of the best of the Seuss books in my opinion
Horton Hatches the egg was one of my favourite books when I was a child and it is lovely to be able to read it to my children and it has become one of their favourite too. I certainly prefer this one to many of the Seuss books available (I have never been a huge fan of Cat in the hat or Green Eggs and Ham) This one has a hugely appealing story.

A Classic!
Being a teacher, I have read this personal favorite story many times to my class, and have enjoyed the cartoom on TV.I've always wanted to own a copy of it and the book to compare/contrast.Well, this year I saw the movie with Jim Carey and comparing it to the classic video, I felt Seuss must be turning over in his grave!It cannot compare to the wonderful cartoon that captures the whimsical drawings and fabulous rhythm of Seuss' words.This year my students did compare/contrast the book and video cartoon, and really learned much from it.Seuss always has a great message, and this one about giving and materialism is right up there!

WHO'd a thunk it?
It is hard to imagine a Christmas without the Grinch.WHO would have believed that an ugly green creature with a heart that is too small could capture the genuine heart of Christmas?A trip to WHOVILLe is a mandatory part of the seasonal celebrations.God bless us, everyone, and especially Dr. Seuss

Board book is far off from description Amazon uses (hardcover)
I remember liking this book as a child and I thought I could get this book for my daughter.The board book has been so abridged that it lacks a lot of things that I thought were funny.AND what about that "climatic ending" where the apples all topple - Not there! I wouldn't even recognize the wording in the board book as Dr. Suess's.

Not a great fan of this one, just not really appealing
One of the books which I keep wondering why I don't really like it. But there are lots of small reasons, none of them major but they all add up.

Dr. Seuss's The Foot Book
I ordered this rhyming book to read to my 11 month old. She likes to look at it by herself also and the pages are sturdy and colorful.

The Foot Book by Dr. Suess
This book is one of a kind! It's colorful and creative! It goes to show that opposites do attract! I would recommend it for any young first beginners in reading!

NOT the book you know and love!
This is a nice enough board book, but be advised that it is NOT the full version of Dr. Seuss' book!They've left out several (charming!) pages of text and illustrations for the Board Book...What a disappointment to loyal fans, and how unfair to the newest generation of fans-to-be. ... Read more

"When I was quite young and quite small for my size, I met an old man in the Desert of Drize." The old man looks like a cross between a cartoon granddad and a swami; he sits on top of a cactus, and tells his young listener that the best way to get over any sadness is to imagine all the ways you could be worse off. "Suppose, just suppose, you were poor Herbie Hart, who has taken his Throm-dim-bu-lator apart!"This has a more hurried, formulaic feel than the best Seuss, and it seems to showcase a less acute grasp of child psychology than usual. (Does it really make a child feel better to think of poor Harry Haddow, who, "try as he will, can't make a shadow," or Gucky Gown, "who lives by himself ninety miles out of town"?) Simple genius
The moral of "Did I Ever..." is as much for the adults reading the story as for the kids who're enjoying it as part of a bedtime ritual.Dr. Seuss paints a picture of silly places and people we're lucky we're not, adjusting our point of view to show that we've got it pretty darn good.Probably not a lesson that a 2 year-old will immediately grasp and write a masters thesis on, but a good seed to plant in his mind.And while the deep meanings of life are flying over their heads, the rugrats will enjoy the brilliant Seuss-ian rhymes and illustrations of ridiculous situations (With your bedroom up here... And your bathroom up there!).Definitely a top-ten book for small human people.

Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are
This was, by far, my favorite book growing up.I loved trying to figure out how to say the strange words and eventually, I could almost recite the entire book from memory.I still can the first few pages.I don't know that I was helped psycologically, but it sure was and is a fun book!

Theodore Seuss Guisel is, of course, one of the best known children's authors today.Though he left us in 1994, his legacy lives on and his books are still produced, bought and loved as much now as anytime in the past.When we think of him, we immediately think of "The Cat in the Hat" or "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", but we can easily forget some of his wonderful, lesser-known works. "When I was quite young and quite small for my size I met an old man in the Desert of Drize..." So begins "Did I Ever Tell You..." where the narrator finds an old man sitting atop a prickly cactus in the middle of the desert.The man tells the boy narrator that whenever HE feels like his life isn't going well, he reminds himself how lucky he really IS.He could be, for example, a construction worker on the impossibly rickety Bunglebung Bridge, where workers are toiling over the water to finish the impossibly crooked structure. Yes, things could be far worse!!You could be a P
