5-0 out of 5 stars Science Made Fun & Easy
I have a 6-yr old boy and a 7-yr old girl. It's very rare to find anything that they agree on but with What Is the World Made Of? I was able to find a book that both of them would enjoy and learn from at the same time. The easy-to-follow language made it easy for them both to follow along. The fun pictures and odd bits of humor kept them interested and wanting to know more. A fantastic find & one I hope to be able to use for quite some time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Teachers!!!
This book is an excellent way to introduce solids, liquids, and gases.I used it with a 3rd grade class and it was perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rocks, Rocks, Everywhere!
"The Magic School Bus: Inside the Earth" immediately picks up where its predecessor, "At the Waterworks", left off.At the end of each book, Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen provide a subtle clue as to the nature and content of their next collaboration - a sly wink to those of us who catch such details.5-0 out of 5 stars Inside The Earth
This storyis about a class of students that is bord then one day they all go on a journey inside the earth and the kids have all these questions that all get answered.the reason I like this book so much is because it tells so much about the earth in a way that is fun for the students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting...
I was roommates with the author at the 2004 National bee, and while he was away getting interviewed, I managed to sneak a peek at his book. I was overwhelmed by the information presented in just the first few pages I read, and while I have yet to read the actual published work, I can definitely say that this book is an asset to any geography classroom or geobee contestant, and that the author deserved his win (well, maybe I deserved it more :-P).

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Wojo!
This book really is great. If you are looking for a reference book for ANY type of social studies, geography, history, area studies or just any class at all, this should make your wish-list. It is laid out well in an appealing format, and the information is all there. The author compiled it to study for the National Geography Bee, and then went on to win both that competition and even the International Geography Competition. I know him personally, and he put a ton of work into this book. It truly shows, and this book is definitely worth waht is charged. This book is a must for schools, as it will help anyone to study anything at all pertaining to geography or world cultures. I enjoyed reading this book, and I wholeheartedly believe you will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on nature for all ages
Primarily bought as a gift for my 5 yr old nephew, I spent a considerable amount of time pouring over this book. A neat thing about this book is the wealth of information coupled with attractive, colorful pictures opening up the world of nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rekindling Our Respect for Nature!
This book has succeeded in describing the great diversity of life on earth in such an interesting way with colorful photographs and new information that one can't help but stand in awe of our great planet. The chapters discuss : How living things work, ecology, classification, plants and animals. I was afraid that the animal section in this book would be a repetition ofDK's Animal Encyclopedia, but thankfully it wasn't, I found new information everytime. For those who are not familiar with DK's encyclopedias one should know that the superior photography and layout of these books really captivate children's attention and fascination with this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars love of nature grows the more we know
I am delighted with this encyclopedia which I ordered as a present for my six year old. This handsome book has beautiful pictures and lots of information covering many aspects of nature.Attractive and accessible, it provides great rewards for the young reader whose love and respect of nature will grow as their knowledge expands. I expect it to be used in greater depth as my daughter grows older. For now, she loves to open it up and see what she finds-and becomes engaged immediately.I highly recommend it. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Most children are captivated by snow, but how many go on to make it theirlifework? This beautiful biography, winner of the 1999 Caldecott Medal, tells the true story of a Vermont farm boy who was mesmerized by snowflakes. Wilson Bentley was fascinated by the six-sided frozen phenomena, and once he acquired a microscope with a camera, his childhood preoccupation took on a more scientific leaning. Bentley spent his life taking countless exquisite photographs (many that are still used in nature photography today), examining the tiny crystals and their delicate, mathematical structures. Jacqueline Briggs Martin tells this tale with simple, graceful prose that will engage children's imaginations. Edifying and snowflake-scattered sidebars offer more information about Bentley's methods and snowflake science. The artwork of Mary Azarian, whose 19th-century hand-press illustrations decorate the charming Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Story
Snowflake Bentley tells the delightful story of Wilson Bentley, a man who spent his entire life photographing snowflakes. He lived in Vermont his whole life, a place where snow is as common as dirt, but yet, he was still able to see its marvelous beauty. Children will love reading this book about a topic everyone finds pleasure in, plus they will be inspired by the life of Snowflake Bentley.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bill Bentley and his somewhat odd profession
This book elegantly portrays the life of a rather eccentric man who spent his entire life studying and photographing snowflakes. The artwork is very complementary to his life's story, which is purposefully written with children in mind as the readers. There is enough information available about his life that an entire unit of study can be developed around the themes of winter and snow.Cross-curricular activities can be expanded to other content areas such as Social Studies and Science.I am a teacher and I use this book in conjunction with William Bentley's book of his actual snowflake photos entitled "Snow Crystals".The students learn a lot about snow and about the man.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a unique and wonderful story
I love finding a children's book with a true story. Kids are bombarded with fiction and silliness all day long (which is wonderful in its own right), but it's such a treat to share a true story with children. Bentley's passion for something so child-friendly as snow inspires great feeling in children and adults alike. The book's detailed woodcut illustrations are beautiful in their own right. Buy this and then go out and buy Bentley's book of Snow Crystals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to geography and reference books

1-0 out of 5 stars Very dissatisfied with this seller
I purchased a textbook on May 11 and it supposedly shipped on May 15, 2006.It is now June 2 and I have yet to receive this order.I do not believe that it takes 21 days for a book to arrive. What is even more infuriating is that the seller has ignored all my e-mails regarding my order.I definitely have every intention of letting Amazon know just how poorly this seller treats customers and I expect that Amazon will have to refund my money because these people won't even acknowledge a customer once they have your money.I WILL NEVER BUY FROM THIS SELLER AGAIN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!!

This textbook is one of the best scientific books I have seen. Not only does it cover earth science (like geology), but astronomy and meteorology also.It covers every topic that you possibly want to know about. The authors leave no information out.I had to use this for Science Olympiad, and it helped me so much. The explanations are great, the images beautiful, and the diagrams very helpful.I would suggest this for anyone that has an interest in Earth Science or Meteorology. It is a great book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Barnyard Animals Aloft
Starting with the historical facts of the first hot-air balloon ride, which took place in Versailles, France in 1783, Priceman lets her imagination - and illustrations - run wild. The first hot-air balloon aviators (i.e., the guinea pigs) were a sheep, a duck and a rooster. After a few introductory pages of text, Priceman depicts the flight with a series of wordless illustrations. The complex pictures lend themselves to careful inspection to catch all the elements of the story. In the end, our barnyard aviators land safely, which I hope this is one of the true facts of this story. 2006 Caldecott Honor Book.

I love this book and my children love it more. The story is hilariously told through the beautiful illustrations. The Caldecott committee made an excellent choice. This book would appeal to children of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stratospherically Sublime
In Hot Air: The (Mostly) True Story of the First Hot-Air Balloon Ride, author and illustrator Marjorie Priceman shows once again why reviewers have christened her "the master of whimsy."Recounting the Montgolfiers 1783 test run of their balloon and imagining, with postmodern verve, the story of the duck, sheep, and rooster who formed the first flight crew, Priceman's narrative is sure to delight both young readers and parents alike.(Reassurance: no animals were harmed in the telling of this Enlightenment-era tale). But the illustrations are the real treasure here (and the Caldecott committee concurs). While infused with the same spirited energy as her earlier books--How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin, Emeline at the Circus--the panels in Hot Air glow with a luminosity that outshines even Priceman's earlier work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Patch of Pleasure
I purchased The Pumpkin Patch a number of years ago and it is still one of my favorite fall books. The text is direct, going through the stages of pumpkin growth; from seed to harvest, for sale at the Pumpkin Patch, and carving into a jack o'lantern. The large, colorful photographs are a clear asset to the instructional value of the text. I now use this book every fall with primary (K through 3rd grade) students as we learn about pumpkins in the days before our own Pumpkin Patch field trip. It allows us to talk about sequencing (what happens first, next, etc.), how fruits grow from flowers, and the different varieties of pumpkins. The Pumpkin Patch is very educational for children (and adults!) old enough to understand the text and how the sequence of photographs relate to each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this series, and Branley's are among the best!
This book is a perfect introduction to volcanoes for K-2 level kids, and older kids or early readers may enjoy reading them alone. It is easy to understand and the illustrations are clear and nice-looking.Unlike some science books for kids, this series tends to be very readable, versus a drier text that may make some kids lose interest quickly.
