Watt a Positively Charged Exploration!
It is more than obvious that Joanna Cole (author) and Bruce Degen (illustrator) had the time of their lives bringing this book to fruition.Penned in 1997, "The Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip" is packaged to the bursting point with anything and everything that has to do with electricity.There's so much going on here that a simple one-sided scorecard just won't suffice upon delving into Ms. Frizzle's latest adventure.It is Cole and Degen's most action-packed and tightly-woven collaboration yet.One senses from just taking in the first few pages that author and illustrator poured every fiber of their being into the Friz's ninth science-related field trip for children.

Poorly made, poor service
My son recieved Battery Science for Christmas. The first prong broke off the motor the first time he tried to use it, the second one broke off while I was trying to fix it. This all happened within five minutes of opening it. This set is useless without the motor.
Battery Science: Widgets that Work
I used this to teach my Webelos Scouts (age 10) how electricity works and make things go.They mostly had fun using the fan to make horrible noises cutting pieces of paper, but they got the point of the experiment.
This book is great!
I got this book for my 11th birthday and I absolutely love it.My friend and I spent an entire day building many of the projects.The submersible worked well, but I had trouble getting the hovercraft to lift off. Terrific way to learn and explain electricity!
When I first opened the book, I thought it would be too young for my nine year old. To my surprise, it caught our attention and explained the puzzling mystery of electricity and currentsin such a way that we both understood how it works. Reading this turned on the light of comprehension. I highly recommend this book to explain the process.

A good introduction to electricity for children.
I pulled this book out when my 5 year old asked me to explain how a light bulb works. The book addresses this subject and also goes on to explain, in simplist form, what electricity is, where it comes from and how we use itin our daily lives. It includes an easy experiement that shows howelectricity is created.While my child was able to understand most of whatwas addressed, the introduction to atoms, electrons... was probably morethan he needed right now. A must to have for holography understanding.
This book is incredible, it explains all you need to know about holograms and how to do them.

Very good reference
Mr Iovine provides an excellent resource for building relatively inexpensive devices for creating holograms. From isolation table to power supply with pictorials, schematics and sufficient information about the technology to assist each step taken. A star omitted due to dated source information.

Excellent practical introduction
The majority of do-it-yourself holography books have at least one major flaw.These range from "you can do this on a sand table" (sand and optics do not mix, sir!) to "now, from the Laplace transform ofthe spatial function we can see" (maybe *he* can see it, butnon-physicists can't.)Read more

Children love it
My children all enjoyed this book. They created a visual display of what they were learning, which helped them to review the things we learned. They then loved showing Daddy, or anyone else, what they had learned. It has wonderful activites for the children to do and little books to make about the scientist. Great compilation of projects for the intermediate hobbyist
This 16 year-old book is a cut above most electronic hobby books that are published today. Many of the newer volumes appear to be rushed out the door and either are constructed for children or for very advanced hobbyists. This is an "intermediate" hobbyist book in that the author expects that you have some experience in tinkering with electronics, but does not necessarily expect that you have an engineering degree. Like the other reviewers, I found some errors in the instructions and parts lists in this book, so be very careful, especially since the first chapter of this book is dedicated to the danger of working with high voltages! This is not a book that merely involves some LED's and 555 timer devices. Instead, the author's projects include a high-voltage Van de Graaff generator, a tesla coil, and several projects involving lasers. Therefore, for safety's sake you should not just turn your high-schooler loose alone in the garage with your credit card number, the number to the closest wholesale electronics warehouse, and these projects. The final projects in the book are the tamest and safest. These involve a custom robot entitled "Scooterbot", designed long before the age of Lego Mindstorms. There are significant mechanical component assemblies involved in most of these projects, so the reader should be comfortable with mechanical as well as electrical tinkering, and most of all have a strong penchant for safety. However, if you are careful, I think you will find this book's projects both interesting and educational. Plus, it is a real bargain at its very low cost.

Great Gizmos!
I love do-dads, thingamagigs and gizmos, and this book is just chuck full of them! Even better, the writer doesn't assume you're an utter moron, or that you have an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering. Fun andchallanging, I highly recommend it.

flawed but still pretty cool
At first glance, this book seems to be a necessary addition to the average tinkerer's library. However, after purchasing the book I found little inconsistencies between the schematics and the text, typos, or somethingelse which led to confusion and apprehension--as the book starts out bywarning of the risk of death with most of the projects if the instructionsand safety precautions aren't followed exactly, and repeats the warningwith almost every project. Before buying this book I'd suggest becomingvery familiar with high-voltage circuits (to the point where you can designyour own), otherwise you won't get as much out of it as you should. Forexample, the first project I tried was the variable xenon strobe, because Ifound all the parts in a $3.50 kit online, and it's actually two projectsin one. The first thing I noticed before building it was that the partslist (the book lists all the components you'll need to build each project)didn't match the schematic--the 555 IC isn't listed. The text says it's theheart of the circuit. Not a big deal, but then the text refers to a thirddiode, which is neither in the parts list nor the schematic. If this is anecessary part you could blow other components and/or, as the book warnsyou several times, kill yourself. As an intermediate-level"gadgeteer," I can't figure out if the text is wrong or if theschematic is wrong, and if the schematic is wrong (the text sounds correct)what to do about it. This book isn't really to teach how things work, it'smore for an advanced gadgeteer to put his or her knowledge to use. There isa basic explanation of how each project works, but not to the point whereyou could go in not knowing anything and come away a rocket scientist.Overall I'd recommend this book only to an advanced gadgeteer, or someonewho's very serious about learning these types of applications ofhigh-voltage circuits. Once you do understand what's happening, though,this book shows you how to build the coolest things, either from scratch orby rewiring things you'd find at a junk shop, and for that, if you are atthat level, I recommend it highly. ... Excellent for Young Children
I bought this book as a Christmas present for my four-year-old daughter, who has been fascinated for months about electricity.She really enjoys it when I read this little book to her, even though it's clearly written for children a little older, given the use of words like "electron" and "generator" and "turbine."However, I make it a policy never to underestimate the ability of children to understand the world around them, and, much to my delight, my daughter recently pointed to the drawing of a generator in the book and said "generator!"This book makes learning fun, as it should be.Great artwork, too. ... A Wonderful Introduction to Medicine
This is a really great introduction to the history of medicine for pre-teens, and also contains much useful and interesting information for the older child.
