    Editorial Review

An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of porcine persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine work of literature that can stand alongside any in English
I just reread it recently as an adult. I had this boxed set of three hardcover E.B. White books when I was a kid - Charlotte's Web, The Trumpet of the Swan (which I remember as my favorite of the three, though I hardly remember it today), and Stuart Little.
    5-0 out of 5 stars Charlotte's Web
I've purchased this book for my daughter who is almost 9 years old, I end up reading it before her. This book is great for growing up kids; how wonderful and variable it is to have a friend he/she can depend on and be with to share fun, sad and so so stories to one another.
4-0 out of 5 stars A classic, and for a good reason
This book, though it may seem to be just a cute story about a pig, is actually quite sad.The first time I read this book I was in first grade and I liked it, but it was only when I just recently read it again that I realized how good it really is. This book, through its simple plot, reminded me a lot about how selfless some people are and also about growing up.No wonder it's a classic; even though it's written for little kids, it can remind a lot of people about their own lives and bring back a lot of fond memories. ... My daughter loves this book! She's 6 years old and reads it all the way thru. If your child loves animals he or she will love this book. My daughter bugged me and bugged me to get this book for her. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic that is a must have
I find that when reading reviews online a lot of parents will give a children's book FIVE stars even though the book is not outstanding. I like to reward five stars to the books that are true winners.

This is one of those books that gets read over and over and over.Unlike some other books which end up at the bottom of the drawer. My 5 year old son is also starting to read the book himself (I hear him on the monitor). The other books in is this series are just as good if not better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type
Great book!I just wish it was clearer that it was a paper book and not card board (which are much more durable for a two year old). Also, would love to know age approprietness for books when buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Selection!
Cows that type? Get out of town! Well, these cows do type, and negotiate. Life in a barnyard could not be more interesting than in this precarious story of farm animals that take a stand to better themselves and their environment. I loved the expressions on the animal's faces when Farmer Brown reacts to their demands. 'Eyes wide open' certainly applies here. This is a read aloud must! Not since I read Animal Farm by Orwell, have I been completely captivated by farm animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars My twins' favorite book!
I had no idea that eight month old babies could be so picky about books (especially when most of them are used as teethers), but *both* of my twins absolutely love this book -- their eyes light up whenever they see it, and they smile as they work through the pages. We actually don't read it with a square-dance rhythm (not a big square dance fan) but the kids love it anyway.I'm buying it for all future baby showers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grab yer fiddles !
My son and I read this book every night before bed. He is 2 and will grab the book saying "barn dance, Mommy !!" We actually will dance with the book and he loves that too !

5-0 out of 5 stars If It's Cronin, It HAS To Be Five Stars!
In our library, we can't keep her books on the shelves, and the once-again winning combination of her words with Betsy Lewin's pictures just cannot be beat. Our small patrons love her books on one level, while their parents are getting a kick out of them on a totally different one.I always appreciate authors who understand that they have two audiences, after all, and Ms. Cronin feeds both appetites. The clever, gentle humor of this book will be welcomed by discerning parents, and by the end, I am sure of two things: Farmer Brown will never catch on, and I will never hear "Born To Be Wild" again without thinking of the beloved Duck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than its predecessors!
I didn't think life got any better than Click Clack Moo, but Dooby Dooby Moo tops it. I love it! Dooby Dooby Moo is one of those rare books that holds enjoyment for kids and adults alike. Kids like the story of the talent show and each animal's attempts to win, while parents get to laugh their heads off at the pig's interpretive dance. It's a great read-aloud book because the adult can sing along (very easy tunes we all know) and kids love that part. I highly recommend Dooby Dooby Moo, especially to any lover of Farmer Brown's motley crew. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

"There has obviously been some kind of mistake," writes Alexander T.Wolf from the pig penitentiary where he's doing time for his alleged crimes of 10 years ago. Here is the "real" story of the three little pigs whose houses are huffed and puffed to smithereens... from the wolf's perspective. This poor, much maligned wolf has gotten a bad rap. He just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, with a sneezy cold, innocently trying to borrow a cup of sugar to make his granny a cake. Is it his fault those ham dinners--rather, pigs--build such flimsy homes? Sheesh.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT
This is a wonderful, delightful and simply funny off take on the old three little pigs story. It is told by the wolf and the story is through his eyes. Now whether you choose to believe his story or not, is completely up to you.The wolf is able to tell a pretty convincing tale, but you just don't really know. This story could be pulled from the newspaper of any of our large city papers today. The author has a true wit about his writing that is appealing to bothyoung and old.The art work is great and fits quite well with the text.Recommend this one quite highly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Oh my friends, I always wanted a family. You are my family...Just as I protect you, so you protect me. I am grateful"
This Newbery honor book is the story of families of origin and families of creation. It is also a tale depicting the power of love and of story. Framed within the present in which Ben and Abby, brother and sister, spend time in their grandfather's barn listening to a tale told by the barn cat, Whittington, who is a descendant of the fabled Dick Whittington's cat. The novel "Whittington" moves between a re-telling of the medieval Whittington tale to two present day tales in which Ben is struggling to read and the animals are struggling for primacy in the barn.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Retelling of a Classic Story
This is a marvelous retelling of a classic children's story, as told to a group of farm animals and children by--of course--a cat. Dick Whittington was a real person and while the story somewhat enhances the truth, it is still worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved in this house!
This book was loved by all my kids at around 1.5 years on up. Get a few copies as toddlers can be rough with the doors and they eventually do fall off. I give this book as a gift as well when friends have babies.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I ordered this book based on all its' glowing reviews. I was a little disappointed when it arrived though. It's very small... yes... good for throwing in your purse etc.. but the flaps inside are also very small. Too small for my 11 month old to use, and a little difficult to find. I'm still going to give it four stars. The illustrations are very colorful and fun. The location of the flaps with-in the pictures is very well done... it's just a shame they are so small. I'm sure my son will really enjoy this book in 5 months or so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Literature - Folktale
What do The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Gingerbread Man,and The Little Red Hen all have in common? These stories all teach a lesson to children about right from wrong.Good behavior is expected to be rewarded, and bad behavior is expected to be punished, leaving the story with a happy ending. This good over evil theme is present in many folktales, offering a sense of hope for the "good guy."
5-0 out of 5 stars Helping others would be profitable.
The little Red Hen is one of the cute stories out there for kids that actually have morals to implement within the story itself. It's teaches the moral of helping and what happens if you just sit down and do nothing but when the job is done, you would get nothing either if you don't help.

Your little one will have plenty of fun pulling down the flaps in this colorful book. However, the large flaps in Peek-a-Moo! are thick paper and therefore easily tear and crease. Also, if you have a toddler who does not want or understand to close the flap back up with each page (such as the case with our 14-month-old daughter), you need to make sure the flaps are back up before you turn the page.Otherwise, they will hang out the bottom of the book, vulnerable to further damage from the wrath of an active toddler. We have other lift-the-flap books that have smaller, thicker flaps that automatically close when you turn the page (such as Dear Zoo--highly recommended), which are in much better condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Let Down...
Duck for President is a let down after the fun of Click Clack Moo and Giggle Giggle Quack. It just doesn't have the fun factor for younger children that the earlier books did. We'll keep it around for when our child gets older and more perceptive about how things really work in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book
I love this book. Not only is it a cute story, but teaches that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

This book does not do much for me, but my 2-year old son absolutely loves it.The book gives him a chance to make animal sounds, and the raised texture of the spider web invites his touch.Of course he is fascinated by the spider herself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good message, but not so entertaining
My daughter is 3 months old, and she will listen to this story since it is short.I love the message.I would give it 5 stars, but she doesn't get absorbed in it like The Very Hungry Catapillar.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read aloud supportive of literacy activities
The "big, bad wolf" wants to eat Pig, Duck and Cow, who are too busy reading to be bothered with him.He goes to school, to learn to read and his early attempts are brushed off by the animals. When he finally learns to read, he entertains Pig, Duck and Cow with his story telling skills and wins them over. This is a fabulous read aloud to launch reading and story telling activities early in the school year.

5-0 out of 5 stars See wolf read
The illustrations in this book are detail-filled and fabulous. When reading to my preschoolers, I like to point out the different parts of the book, including the endpages.Just the endpages alone tell a story!Wolf is a fierce, angry, and hungry guy.He justs wants to scare someone, and maybe take a bite.Unfortuately, the farm animals he encounters are not scaredy cats. They just tell him to be quiet, "this is a farm for educated animals."So wolf, goes to school. He practices. He becomes more than a reader, he becomes a storyteller. As wolf learns and practices, visual clues illustrate his journey toward a more civillized wolf.He adds clothing and makes more refined entrances. My preschoolers adore this book, and I would recommend it to anyone!

When Duck gets the zany idea to ride a bike one day, each animal on thefarm has a reaction. "M-o-o-o," says Cow. But what she's really thinking is, "Aduck on a bike? That's the silliest thing I've ever seen!" Pig and Pig say"Oink," thinking all the while, "Duck is such a show-off!" But it's not until acrew of kids shows up and leaves their bikes lying about that the true feelingsof all the animals come to light, and for one brief, glorious moment, the farmis a mad, mad world of two-wheeling road hogs (and chickens and horses andgoats). 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Read!
My two year old and four year old love this book!We checked it out of the library and were sad to have to return it. The story moves along in a very predictable way, yet has a great twist at the end. It gets read several times a week and has definitely become one of our family's new favorites!

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could ride a bike just like duck!
For me, any book that can be acted, as much as read aloud, is a book that I want to share with my listeners and one that I would definitely recommend to you. This book is both those things. The ingenious text invites you to mimic the farm animals and be the most spirited reader you can be. In the hands of a dedicated reader and/or a devoted parent, this title will prove an exceedingly satisfying read. The illustrations are gorgeous and can be most appreciated in the arms of a child while he/she studies them up close. The clever ending will hopefully tempt your son or daughter to say, "Uh-oh, what's he up to now?" and foster a discussion with him/her about what might happen to Duck next. This is one of the best examples of contemporary literature for young children because it so artfully combines smart writing with outstanding illustrations. Again, like so many of the books I've presented to my audiences at the Children's Museum, this is a book that should be included in your young child's library because it will undoubtedly be read over and over and enjoyed till it's worn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful!
This is such a fun book for children and their Parents! The farm animals are so cute and the expression on their face is humorous! Parent's can have fun giving each character a different voice. This is an excellent book for young children! My son enjoys many of David Shannon's stories, including the David books. The David books are probably more for children past the toddler stage. My son read one of the David books in front of class and the students loved it!The David pictures are pretty funny too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious when fried
There are some jokes out there that are so classic they've passed the point where they're funny anymore. Knock-knock jokes fall into this category. Light bulb jokes too. And then there's the best one of them all. Why-did-the-chicken-cross-the-road jokes. Boy oh boy you just can't make anyone laugh with one of those anymore, can you? Well that's the way my thinking would have gone had I not picked up a bizarre little picture book title by the same name. In this book fourteen different children's illustrators are each granted a two-page spread to offer their answer to this, the oldest of questions. No two answers are exactly alike and no two illustrators have styles even vaguely similar. It makes for a book that kids will adore, grown-ups will pore over, and insipient illustrators will want to keep very close at hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story of friendship, art, and puns, too!
This terrific book recounts the rivalry and eventual friendship of Picasso and Matisse, er, ah, excuse me...I meant, Pigasso and Mootisse. The protagonists in this story live across the street from each other and first hurl insults like,"You paint like a wild beast", (that's called "fauvism" for all you art lovers or snobs out there!) while Mootisse retorts, "You are pig-headed".Throughout, the paint and puns fly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Must-Add to Your Permanent Collection
After my daughter checked this out from her school library over and over and over we bought it.It is beautifully written and illustrated, the strawberry short cake recipe is great and everyone can help with it.It is a great primer for teaching kids to bake also -- for example it teaches what it means to 'cut in the shortening'.One of the best books out there. My three kids all love it, and will for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious!
My 3-year-old daughter picked this out at the library today and I am hooked! The story revolves around Big Brown Rooster, the great-grandson of Little Red Hen.He has become bored with chicken feed and wants some real food.Rooster locates his great-grandmother's cookbook and a few assistants and goes to work. The story quickly becomes silly as the kitchen helpers misunderstand the instructions at every point of the cooking process.Rooster sets them straight, though, and the result is a yummy strawberry shortcake (recipe included).Every spread in the cooking section of the story is accompanied by a sidebar explaining the relevant step of the process. These sidebars cover ingredients, measuring, turning on the oven, etc.The fun story and delightful illustrations will draw children in, but Cook-a-Doodle-Doo is more than just a story. This is a terrific introduction to cooking, and I will be adding it to my homeschool library.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous and engaging book
I am a elementary school teacher and I loved the book so much that I made a unit on it.The students laughed out loud as I read it.They were able to catch on to the pattern and loved comparing and contrasting this story to the folk tale of the Little Red Hen.The wording was excellent and the pictures were darling.
