5-0 out of 5 stars Full fathom five thy father lies
I suppose that there must be some people in world for whom the name "David Wiesner" means nothing. I can't fathom what this kind of an existence must be like. I suppose it would be the literary equivalent of not knowing what chocolate was. Or snow. The minute the new Wiesner book comes out I, like hundreds of thousands of others like me, rush out to purchase it for friends, relatives, and passing acquaintances I met once in the grocery store. Little wonder that the man has won two Caldecott Medals AND two Caldecott Honors. Now one of those numbers is about to change since Wiesner has produced his most ambitious creation to date. Wordless (as always) and more intense than his light-hearted "Tuesday" and "Sector 7" ever were, this is a book overflowing in deep-water mysteries and delights.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book out of a great series - a review by Eli (age 7)
This book is really out of this world.I have been hooked on the magic school bus series.I can't wait to read more books in the series. The inside the human body book is full with very interesting facts and I learned so much from reading it.Arnold doesn't know where the bus is and is trying to find it.He doesn't even know that it is actually inside him. Then Arnold sneezes and finds the bus right next to him.He doesn't understand how he didn't see it before.

5-0 out of 5 stars packed with information
Ms. Frizzle is taking her class on a memorable field trip through the human body in this entertaining book featuring the beloved eccentric teacher and her curious class. My only complaint is that the pages are so busy with information that it's impossible to sit and really read the whole book, but perhaps it's best to let a child's curiosity guide you through a number of readings rather than trying to get everything in at one sitting.Concepts are expressed clearly and with humor.Justly popular with young students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fifth Food Group: Magic School Buses
Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen outdo themselves in "The Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body."It is their most ambitious collaboration yet, and it definitely doesn't disappoint.Read more

Editorial Review

Wanda Petronski lives way up in shabby Boggins Heights, and she doesn't have any friends. Every day she wears a faded blue dress, which wouldn't be too much of a problem if she didn't tell her schoolmates that she had a hundred dresses at home--all silk, all colors, and velvet, too. This lie--albeit understandable in light of her dress-obsessed circle--precipitates peals of laughter from her peers, and she never hears the end of it. One day, after Wanda has been absent from school for a few days, the teacher receives a note from Wanda's father, a Polish immigrant: "Dear teacher: My Wanda will not come to your school any more. Jake also. Now we move away to big city. No more holler Polack. No more ask why funny name. Plenty of funny names in the big city. Yours truly, Jan Petronski." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good read for any young girl
I read this when I was really young and it had a serious impact on my life and the way I treated others. This is a short book meant for kids who are under 12 years old but it's equally powerful even for adults and carries a strong message. I have met a lot of catty, shallow women and girls in my life (no names here) who should read this book. It has a very good lesson about kindness, not judging others and standing up for what is right. It's a sad story with a bittersweet ending. Though I wished the ending had more closure, the message is still strong and I would not change the story. I think kids will learn a great deal from this story, things like: Don't judge others on how they look or what they have. Be kind to people because you never know when they will be gone. Don't say anything to anyone that you may regret later. Above all, never underestemate people's talent or brains. This story is old but timeless!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE HUNDRED DRESSES: What is it about?
First off, I want to start with saying that this book is not about lying but the hazards of peer pressure and teasing. Wanda Pertoniski was different and because of this she suffered the indignities of being teased and ostracized from any real normal life. She was an easy target for the more popular and socially acceptable girls of her school. Wanda was quite and reserved, never really stood up for herself. One day she announced to all that heard that she had a hundred of the most beautiful dresses in her closet at home. The reality of it was that while she did have dresses in her closet they were not in actuality real. They were pictures that she had created. To take this as a lie is not properly correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks (asteroids)!
This book is a blast (no pun intended)! Mrs. Frizzle and her class travel to every planet in the solar system. The bus breaks down in the asteroid belt and the students have to find Mrs. Frizzle on a very cold planet. You'll love all the colorful pictures and Arnold's crazy cousin!Blast-off to this book and learn a lot about space in a fun way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Solar System
I like this book because it makes me wonder about the solar system and everything happening in it. I love imagining what things are like in other places and this book makes me think but it also taught me stuff about the solar system too. This book makes me want to visit the solar system myself.

Editorial Review

Fields of white opium poppies stretch away over the hills, and uniformedworkers bend over the rows, harvesting the juice. This is the empire of MatteoAlacran, a feudal drug lord in the country of Opium, which lies between theUnited States and Aztlan, formerly Mexico. Field work, or any menial tasks, aredone by "eejits," humans in whose brains computer chips have been installed toinsure docility. Alacran, or El Patron, has lived 140 years with the help oftransplants from a series of clones, a common practice among rich men in thisworld. The intelligence of clones is usually destroyed at birth, but Matt, thelatest of Alacran's doubles, has been spared because he belongs to El Patron. Hegrows up in the family's mansion, alternately caged and despised as an animaland pampered and educated as El Patron's favorite. Gradually he realizes thefate that is in store for him, and with the help of Tam Lin, his bluff and kindScottish bodyguard, he escapes to Aztlan. There he and other "lost children" aretrapped in a more subtle kind of slavery before Matt can return to Opium to takehis rightful place and transform his country.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot to learn, including girl-power
This is Demi's re-telling of an old folktale of a king who orders that all rice in his kingdom must be stored in the royal granaries so that there would be food in times of famine; but when his people start to go hungry, he refuses to open the granaries, claiming that the situation was not bad enough to warrant doing so - until a small child outsmarts him by asking for a grain of rice doubled every day for a month.
5-0 out of 5 stars a tale to delight both young and old
My daughter is three and loves this book -- not just for the gorgeous fold-out illustrated spread of the caravan of elephants carrying the rice on the 30th day -- but because she can follow along with the story. The tale is of a rich greedy rajah who doesn't want to share, but is then outwitted by a young girl and forced to give up all the grain in his storehouses. At the end, he is humbled and vows to be a more fair and wise ruler. My daughter loves to sit with one grain of rice in her hand like Rani on the title page of the book.I can see her forming rudimentary mathematical concepts, but I won't push it.There's plenty of time to return to this book when we introduce the times tables.
5-0 out of 5 stars One grain of rice = many valuable lessons for students
One Grain of RIce is not only a bookof math, it is also a folktale. It shows how rice can grow from one grain, to two grains,to four grains, to 8 grains to 16 grains and all the way up to a whole barn full of grain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Middle School kids
I have use this book in my middle school classroom. The kids enjoy it.Yes, it is silly but heck so are middle school kids!Since reading the book and discussing it, the kids have a much better understanding of what pi really is, instead of just saying about 3.14.

I read this book to a fourth grade class and they really got a kick out of it.They wanted to learn pie along with Radius through his adventures to conquer the curse. This is a creative way to introduce a math lesson to children. There is even places to stop and let the kids try a couple problems. The activities include measuring and dividing.Teachers this is a must have. ... Fabulous book for children teaching them all sorts of wonderful things...while entertaining them all the while with terrific engaging illustrations. It's also a great book for DACHSHUND owners everywhere!

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of a dachshund puppy who is trying to get to sleep
An interactive picture book specifically written in rhyming narrative couplets by Paul Epner and lively illustrated by Bill Reed for children ages 6 to 10, There's A Dachshund In My Bed! is the story of a dachshund puppy who is trying to get to sleep by creatively counting animals using different mathematical operations. Children are introduced to the names given to groups of different animals as well as learning how to work on the math problems that are interwoven into the engaging and thoroughly entertaining story. The vocabulary enhances the young reader's understanding of math operations in words. The math problems are sequential and each builds upon the answer from the previous page. A clear pictorial summation of the math solutions is provided at the end of this enthusiastically recommended picture book which is an ideal addition to homeschool, community library, and grade school library collections.

2-0 out of 5 stars Convoluted
I bought this book soon after we adopted our daughter.I found the writing style to be convoluted and precocious, much like the way children speak in contemporary movies (adult words from a child's mouth).Sorry, not a fan.We are still looking for a book that addresses an open, domestic adoption that can speak to children, not adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!!
Our son is adopted and we absolutely love this book.I agree with what everyone has said! This book also has given me ideas on how to word a little book with his own story in it.We will definately buy this book for anyone that we know who is adopting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tell Me Again About...
Awesome!I love the stor, and it has been a great intro for family, cousins and friends that are not sure how to address our newly adopted infant. We have been able to take the lead in how we tell, share and react to the situation as he grows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ties in with the DVD really well
This book is in a slightly different vein to the ones that include the rocket magnifying glass - but we love it! It ties in really well to the DVD and follows the story with lots of room for following up ideas, active participation by your child and for reinforcing the correct terminology! I great science-y book that doesn't dumb down ideas for kids. How can this not succeed? We love the introduction to science, art, music, geography that the DVD/TV programmes provide - and this book builds on that. A 'must' for any kids who are into Little Einsteins! My daughter is onnly 2 and 4 months but requests this book again and again and has already memorised several pages!

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
This book is great way for kids to learn about bugs and metamorphosis. My daughter loves this show on the Disney Channel, and I'm so glad to see they finally have books for them! 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best memories of my childhood
was reading these short stories as they were published in Boy's Life. The collection was almost an anti-climax - still wonderful, but by then so thorougly digested I'd practically memorized them.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Finest Science-Based Stories ForBoys Ever Written
There have been plenty of science-based children's stories written over the years, but Bertrand R. Brinley's Mad Scientists' Club stories are something special.A combination of excellent true-to-life writing, simple yet sound science (with a single exception), and a gently wicked sense of fun have produced a marvelous collection of stories that seem as clever and fresh as when they came out more than forty years ago.The secret? The fact that the Mad Scientists of Mammoth Falls use science not for building great inventions or solving great mysteries, but primarily for playing clever pranks on the well deserving.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for everyone
Not only boys will enjoy this wonderful collection of stories.I'm a girl & this was one of my favorite books growing up.The adventures are much better than Nancy Drew or those... *opinion* inane 'babysitter' books.I highly recommend this book & am currently purchasing my second copy in addition to putting the rest of the mad scientist books on my wish list. These books would make great presents for any child. ... In 1986, author Joanna Cole and illustrator Bruce Degen published their first book together. It was a story about a funky-cool teacher with frizzy-red hair, who led her class on the most extraordinary, in-depth, and out-of-this-world field trips like no instructor before her.The adventures of Ms. Frizzle and her students quickly became a hit with real-life children, parents and teachers alike. No one could have predicted the success that awaited Cole and Degen once "The Magic School Bus: At the Waterworks" hit the shelves.

My science-loving eight-year-old son really enjoys reading books from the Magic School Bus series, and the topic and plot line of this one engaged him as well. But early into the book, he was asking me about nearly every other word. When I looked more carefully, I realized the reading level was higher than other books he had read in the series and many of the facts were things I had learned in junior high.I decided to take over, reading the book to him and explaining many of the topics in more detail.Don't get me wrong -- he really enjoyed the book and learned some "cool" new things about the senses. It just wouldn't have made much sense without my involvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Science
This book is based on the television show the magic school bus, with Mrs. Frizzle. The book contains great factual illustrations for the reader. The students of Mrs. Frizzle's class are learning about the senses so they get into their magic school bus and shrink down, and go into a students nose and from there they continue to the other sensory organs.I like the format of this book because it is very active instead of reading from a textbook the children can get the same information but have fun while they are learning. I also like hands on activities and this is as close as hands on with a book as you can get.It also gives small science experiments and reports that the class has written for the child to read. The author has such great imagination and brings the fun back into learning science. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for Young Curious Minds...
As a 3rd Grade School Teacher, I found this book instrumental to my lessons on plant life. Ms. Drizzle and her class answer many of the questions my students come up with before we've read the book so I know that we're reading the right materials for our lessons. Great series for the imagination and for provoking interest in the sciences early in the child's development.

3-0 out of 5 stars The earlier books are much better
We were given a copy of "Magic Schoolbus and the Ocean Floor" as a gift.I then bought "Dinosaurs" and "Senses."There is a difference between the books written only by Joanna Cole and the later books that are basically a comic-book version of the TV show.It takes us a solid 45 minutes to read "Senses", and I even learned some facts."Plants Seeds" is about a 15 minute read-aloud.I say stick with the earlier books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
I enjoyed this book very much because it is such a fun way to learn about science. This is the first of many Magic School Bus books I purchased, and I've been hooked ever since. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaurs and the Magic School Bus
I bought this book for my son's 5th birthday. He loves the Magic School Bus series and he loves Dinosaurs. This was the perfect gift for him. We have read it a few times already. It does not read as smooth as the other books in the series, but it keeps his interest and makes him want to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the biggest meat eater. From vincent
Acually the biggest carnivore was giganotosaurus(gig-a-no-toe-sau-rus)with runners up being carcharodontosaurus(car-car-o-don-to-sau-rus),spinosaurus (the star from Jurrasic Park III)Then Tyrannosaurus rex (t-rex).My personal favorites: Velociraptor(veh-loss-i-rap-tor, ceratosaurus (cer-at-o-sau-rus),oviraptor (o-vi-rap-tor),and ornitholestes (or-nith-o-les-tees).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful educational book for a variety of ages!
I wasn't familiar with the Magic School Bus series until I visited my family this past weekend--my 3-year old niece absolutely loved this book!Unconventional teacher Mrs. Frizzle takes her students on an archeological dig, but she then decides to give them a real look at dinosaurs by loading them onto her magic school bus and traveling back in time. The main body of the story is only about 5 lines per page, making the book appropriate for reading to younger children, but there is also a wealth of additional information included in surrounding insets, making the book ideal for an older beginning reader as well (and fun for adults, too!).The pictures are extremely detailed and colorful, and the illustrated children portray a variety of ethnic appearances.Given my niece's reaction, I'd highly recommend this book for aged 2-3 and up. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for children
If you have a 10-15 years old, this is a nice book for him/her. This is not a history of technology book, it's more of an easy reading.
2-0 out of 5 stars Well made, but not entirely accurate
Make no mistake; this is a well-made piece of work. The stories flow smoothly, and the illustrations are very nice. However, the facts just haven't been checked. It claims (incorrectly) that Coca-Cola was an accident, it states (falsely) that Cinderella originally wore fur slippers instead of glass, and it actually elaborates with no real evidence on the history of the brick. For these reasons, I don't recommend it; if you really enjoy it and want to, check everything at snopes.com, where facts are checked ruthlessly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for all Ages
This book is both a useful resource and an enjoyable way to past a rainy day.Ideal for all age groups - preteens will love learning about 'famous' mistakes - teens will get interested in thinking of ones left out of the book and adults we be amazed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Science Verse
"Science Verse" and " Math Curse" both are hilarious books. The tapes they come with also come with the funnyness of the books. I find "Science Verse" a lot more non-thinking-about-it book than Math Curse, but "Math Curse" is more brain racking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky and Funny
I love that it comes with a CD. The lyrics make you think. I will purchase this when my girls are older.
