    Editorial Review

"There has obviously been some kind of mistake," writes Alexander T.Wolf from the pig penitentiary where he's doing time for his alleged crimes of 10 years ago. Here is the "real" story of the three little pigs whose houses are huffed and puffed to smithereens... from the wolf's perspective. This poor, much maligned wolf has gotten a bad rap. He just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, with a sneezy cold, innocently trying to borrow a cup of sugar to make his granny a cake. Is it his fault those ham dinners--rather, pigs--build such flimsy homes? Sheesh.Read more

Jon Scieska wrote the book The True Story of The Three Little Pigs. The genre of this book is Fiction. In the book, there are four main characters. They are Alexander, and the three little pigs.
5-0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT
This is a wonderful, delightful and simply funny off take on the old three little pigs story. It is told by the wolf and the story is through his eyes. Now whether you choose to believe his story or not, is completely up to you.The wolf is able to tell a pretty convincing tale, but you just don't really know. This story could be pulled from the newspaper of any of our large city papers today. The author has a true wit about his writing that is appealing to bothyoung and old.The art work is great and fits quite well with the text.Recommend this one quite highly. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars not what I hoped for
Although this book has beautiful music and wonderful pictures, the retelling of the origional story is not very good. Many important elements of the story are changed. The wolf is released back into the wild because he says he is sorry and will try to change. I prefer the origional story and was not expecting changes such as this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow great!
I bought this book as teaching tool to help my students learn to love classical music and stories. This book cleverly shows them the characters and their music clearly. My classes have been entertained by the excellent recording and clear pictures.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The "kinder, gentler" ending removes the dangerous aspect of the wolf. The wolf is intended to represent the evil in the world beyond the garden gate and Peter vanquishes it by being smarter and more agile. Both the threat and the victory are diminished when the wolf simply promises to do better in the future. Yuck.

A change of seasons is in the air. Fletcher the fox doesn't understand and now he's worried.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful language and art--highly, highly recommended
It's rare that a children's book comes along where both the artwork and the language reach the heights offered up by Fletcher and the Falling Leaves. The story's premise--a young fox attempts to protect his favorite tree from the encroachment of autumn, trying in vain to keep it leaved, literally to the last leaf--could have easily become overly sentimental and cloying.Instead, there is a true sense of sadness and empathy leavened by some wonderfully quirky moments all of which lead to a close that is as satisfying as it is moving. As it is, the story could certainly have stood on its own for plot alone, regardless of language or art.But the artwork is simply sensational, the impressionistic watercolors perfectly matching each page's tone and sentiment, matching the movement of time through day and night, from fall to winter, culminating in perfect pace with the plot in a final illustration of the tree that is simply beautiful. It's a good book for the story, an excellent book for the story plus the art. What makes it a great book, truly a beautiful book, is the language, which never fails to please, to startle, to jostle. The words are sharp and vivid, the rhythm carries you along, and the rhymes and slant rhymes sneak up on you in singular moments of sheer joy in language. The book is a pure clinic in children's picture books as all three elements--plot, art, and language--each alone a superior example, come together to create a whole even greater than its impressive parts.A great book, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, beautiful illustrations
This is a beautiful book.Fletcher is a young fox that has noticed the forest is changing as the summer comes to an end.He has a favorite tree. When he sees the way the leaves are changing he thinks that the tree is sick.He does everything he can think of to help the tree keep it's leaves.Of course in the end he can't save the leaves and he goes home very sad with the last leave that was on the tree. The next day he wakes up and goes to his tree and is mesmarized by the sight of the tree. It's beautiful it's covered in icicles and shining in the morning sunlight. He asks the tree if it is okay and the tree in a sense answers him. The wind blows and the tree shakes and the icicles tingle. To Fletcher it sounds like the tree is laughing and he takes this to mean that the tree is alright. The illustrations are wonderful and the last one of the tree with the icicles is fabulous it is done with a type of glitter.Very pretty effect.I very much recommend this book ... Read more

This is one of those backyard gardens tales, featuring the ever so clever and resourceful Mr. Fox who frequently outsmarted three most unpleasant farmers, namely Boggis, Bunce and Bean, each time he went up to their farms to get his family dinner everyday. The farmes did whatever he coud so they could catch Mr. Fox but everytime they failed.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but lengthy fiction for Thirdgraders
This book is good for the development of your child's reading habit and towards building his imagination but the fictional character presentation of Mr. Fox over 88 pages could at times be quite boring to sustain your child's interest. Non-fiction for children like "Amazing Buildings" (31 pages) and "Abraham Lincoln" (50 pages) are more concise and interesting for the children as they connect real lives (of people) and living objects (like famous buildings) to the growing awareness of things around them. Fictional characterizaton of animals could be stimulating for children when they are not lengthy prose and the plot of the story is simple for the children to digest at that age.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Mr.Fox
Ever wanted to read a book with suspense and comedy. Well then the book "Fantastic Mr.Fox" by Roald Dahl is just the book for you it is about a fox and his family who steal food from farmers until one day the farmers got fed up with it. They made a plan. They went hunting for Mr.Fox and his family. If you want to know if Mr.Fox and his family survive read the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read aloud supportive of literacy activities
The "big, bad wolf" wants to eat Pig, Duck and Cow, who are too busy reading to be bothered with him.He goes to school, to learn to read and his early attempts are brushed off by the animals. When he finally learns to read, he entertains Pig, Duck and Cow with his story telling skills and wins them over. This is a fabulous read aloud to launch reading and story telling activities early in the school year.

5-0 out of 5 stars See wolf read
The illustrations in this book are detail-filled and fabulous. When reading to my preschoolers, I like to point out the different parts of the book, including the endpages.Just the endpages alone tell a story!Wolf is a fierce, angry, and hungry guy.He justs wants to scare someone, and maybe take a bite.Unfortuately, the farm animals he encounters are not scaredy cats. They just tell him to be quiet, "this is a farm for educated animals."So wolf, goes to school. He practices. He becomes more than a reader, he becomes a storyteller. As wolf learns and practices, visual clues illustrate his journey toward a more civillized wolf.He adds clothing and makes more refined entrances. My preschoolers adore this book, and I would recommend it to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
This book is very well written, and even though the wolves can talk, the book still keeps to the basics of realistic wolves.
5-0 out of 5 stars great book
Runt is a magical book about survival and about finding your place within the pack. Runt is the smallest of his litter and no one in the pack thought that he could make it. He is rejected by many of the wolves in the pack and is usually a loner. The only one that is really there for him is his mom aand even his dad has doubts abouit him. Runt gets into alot of trouble through out the story and is even the cause of his brother dying. But in the end he proves everyone that even though he's the little guy, he can do everything and anything that all of the other wolves can do.
4-0 out of 5 stars Runt, A book of Love and Compassion
This book is full of love and compassion.Runt is a wolf pup born in a litter of five.He is the smallest and weakest which is how he got his name. His brothers and sisters are all named for there great quality.Runt however looked like his father, dressed in black fur with a white star on his chest.Always his father watched him with a gaze in his eyes saying, "can you do it, will you survive."Then Runt wanted to say he could and that is what determined him. Also because of the love that swelled in his chest for all his family. He kept on trying at everything and never gave up.

    Editorial Review

Doctor De Soto is a well-respected mouse-dentist who runs a successful practice with his wife (and able assistant) Mrs. De Soto. The De Sotos are friendly and professional toward all their patients, from chipmunks to donkeys to cows, the exception being "cats and other dangerous animals," as stated clearly on the sign outside the office. But the De Sotos are tender-hearted rodents, so when a miserable fox shows up begging for treatment, they agree to have a look (perhaps against their better judgment). As it turns out, this fox, with "a rotten bicuspid and unusually bad breath," manages to behave himself while tiny Doctor De Soto is standing mid-molar inside his gaping jaws. When the wily fox returns the next day to get his replacement gold tooth, however, he has mouse-flavored snacks on his mind. Luckily, Doctor De Soto and his wife have anticipated such despicable canine intentions, and find a way to outfox the ungrateful fox. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Doctor DeSoto book
You can call me StoryMaker. "Doctor DeSoto" is not my favorite book, and I especially don't like the end. I like how they are animal people, but are the size they are supposed to be. What I mean is, they are animals that talk, walk on 2 legs, and live in their own house, but unlike most people animals, they are the size they are in real life. It would probably be a book a young child would adore (probably most children ages 3-5) but I don't fall into the "Dr. DeSoto lovers" category or the "children ages 3-5" category. This book is where a mouse named Dr. DeSoto (a dentist) finds out a fox is seeking dental care. Dr. DeSoto never let an animal that might eat him come in before (that's where them being the size they are in real life is important), but the fox really wants that dental care so Dr. DeSoto's wife lets him in. The part I hate the most is the end when Dr. DeSoto gives the fox his so-called special treatment so he won't eat them. That so-called special treatment causes the fox to not be able to eat anything, even if it isn't a DeSoto family member at all. He could DIE if it dosen't ware off! I actually don't have a lot of complaints, but this book is not very exciting. Overall, perhaps you may like it, but if you like foxes, this book will not please you. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, critical thinking perspective
Consider things from the point of view of the dentist and his patient . . . you'll be laughing out loud while reading this to your kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining story
Dr. Desoto is a humorous well illustrated story of a mouse dentist and how he solved a problem in an unexpected way. I have read this book to several children 5-8 yr. age range and they all loved it and wanted to borrow it. Parents will appreciate Dr, Desoto's desire to maintain his professional integrity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Feels like Harry Potter!
This is a wonderful series of books. They have the feel/appeal of Harry Potter, although they don't deal with magic like Harry Potter. Rather, this is a story of good against evil, and unlike Harry Potter, good wins. I don't know why this series isn't as popular as the Harry Potter books. They are very well written. Adults and children alike will enjoy this series. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story
I have always loved this story and was happy to find the book again. The hardcover might have better quality pictures--the softcover one seemed slightly faded from what I remember -that is why I only gave it 4 stars.Otherwise it is a wonderful story which is perfect for bedtime (especially if you live on a farm).

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Timeless Classic!!
My three year old has loved this book for the last year and it is still a favorite bedtime story. The quiet prose combined with the repetitive and beautiful imagery make this a beloved story before bed. Highly recommeded!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book, poor printing quality
I have always loved this book, and recently ordered a new hardbound copy for my three children. When I received it, I was surprised at the markedly poor paper quality (despite being hardbound) and the poor saturation of both the pictures and the script on the facing pages. Yes, the illustrations are watercolor, that is not what I mean. The ink and just the overall print quality are cheap-seeming. Near the copyright it states "printed in (third world nation)". To those of us who remember when t-shirts were union-made domestically and didn't fall apart after five washings, this seems like part of an overall trend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful childrens story
This story is a classic and has been presented in many cultures using familiar places and customs.I liked it mainly becasue of the lack of violence. Most importantly my three year old grandson loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love This Story
I'm familiar with the green and red version of this story, but I think this is almost the same text. My daughter loved this one when she was little, it's just a bit frightening because the Gunniwolf himself is so silly looking. I particularly like the dialogue with the quaint wording. It's different from most stuff published now.

5-0 out of 5 stars My children love this book
We've gotten both this version and the original out from the library so many times that I had to buy our own copy. For some reason, my girls just love this story. They love the repetition of the song and the pit pat pit pat of Little Girl running away and the hunker cha hunker cha of the gunniwolf chasing her. They want me to read it again and again. And when I'm not reading it to them, although they are both preschool age, I hear them "reading" this book to each other. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unconditional Love, no matter what
This is a very sweet story about a parent's unconditional love for his/her child. One of the things I like most about this story is that the parent could be mom, dad, grandparent, etc.It really fits multiple types of family situations. The story centers around characters named "Large" and "Small".Small is feeling grumpy and is wondering if Large will still love him/her even in adverse circumstances.Small goes through several 'what if' scenarios; 'what if I were a squishy bug', 'what if I were a crocodile', etc.In every scene, Large reassures Small that he/she will always love Small no matter what.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great illustrations; comforting story
I received this book as a gift with my first child 6 years ago.It is one of my 2 girls' favorite books, and one of my favorite to read.It seems so many other childrens' books have non-sense themes/illustrations.The color is fantastic and charming - how many times can you say they are still looking at all the pictures on the page before you're done reading that verse?

This book is our 3 year-old's favorite bedtime book! We've read it so many times that I can pause and let her finish the line.I really like that the characters are genderless, so it could be either a little boy or little girl being told that either the mommy or the daddy will love him/her "No Matter What".

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh the horror - TV watching, jam eating, video game playing wolves!
This book is so comical I don't see how anyone could really find it disturbing.Sure, the wolves come out of the walls and the family decides to leave but what silly party animals these wolves are.And of course we find that the wolves are actually terrified of the humans as in "when the humans come out of the walls it is all over" The family gets their home back with just some humorous "losses" (a wolf has beat brother's high score on his video game) and a bit of cleaning up to do.The ending has been done again and again and I took it more as a satire of typical children's picture books rather than Mr. Gaiman and Mr. McKean wanting to start an "in the walls" franchise.I think this book would be perfect to use with fifth grade/middle school kids to teach some storywriting techniques and I mourn that picture books are not more often with older students. The illustrations are clever and unique. Yes, in one scene the wolves have red jam on their mouths that could be blood but the text makes it very clear this is all in fun and the red stuff is JAM! This is a fun book and not to be taken seriously.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful!
Lucy believes that there are wolves in her house's walls. She tells her mother, and she says it must be mice. She informs her father of her worry, and he says it must be rats. She goes to her brother, and he says it is bats. Still, Lucy is not assured. ''When the wolves come out of the walls", they tell her ''it will all be over".
5-0 out of 5 stars My 4 year old loved this book
I'm not quite sure why there were wolves in the walls, or why "when the wolves come out of the walls it will all be over" but this book was very well done. This book was based off of a dream at night that the authors child had and whole book is about irrational fears...but it is a pretty long book for younger kids who don't have a long attention span.

I first bought The Sight because of story about wolves and fantasy; good vs. evil stuff. I just expect it to be another children book that I can finish quickly and don't have to think much about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pat Hutchins is a genius
I first fell in love with Pat Hutchins after "reading" her wordless book, Changes Changes. I have since purchased her other books that remain in print after nearly 30 years. I missed out on these, somehow, in my childhood, but luckily they are still around today to show my own son just how important a great book can be. Simple stories, detailed illustrations create wonderful books that will last for generations to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 year old LOVES it
I disliked the book, but my daughter loves it - she can make up stories about Rosie and will "read" it to her dolls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray! A Realistic Wolf Book!
I was very impressed with Asta Bowen's novel of a wolf pack's struggle to find a homeland! I have found most books in which wolves, (or any animal, for that matter) play the lead role are a bit too anthropomorphic, and the wolves have the minds of humans. However, I was pleasently surprised to find WOLF containing little to no human-like sentimentality at all. Highly reccomended to wolf and dog lovers young and old. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED TO FANS OF NIK SAWE'S "WOLF TRAILS
