3-0 out of 5 stars a little bit too easy
maria litvin - i'd recommend it to anyone who never learned java b4. this book definitely stresses over concept, but the problems are not enough and much easier than the test i took in may. as a result, i'd recommend u to buy this book, but a harder book to go along with it like ds-marketing or barron's.
5-0 out of 5 stars A boon to AP Java students
This is a great book. I feel that I owe them for making this book. The authors do a great job in simply summarizing the concepts covered on the AP test, and providing great examples - the free response questions were right on the money! Highly suggested.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Manual for the AP Comp Sci Exam in Java
Maria Litvin has done an extraordinary job of putting together the new "Be Prepared for the AP Computer Science Exam in Java".This review manual, which has enough detail to double as a text book, has everything students need to focus on prior to taking the exam.It addresses everything in the ETS Java subset that students should have studied during the school year and has outstanding multiple choice and free response practice exam questions. The tests even include questions about the Java Marine Biology Simulation program which students need to know for the exam. Her web site also includes the 2003 C++ free response questions, which have been translated into Java.If you are searching for a great review manual with great practice questions, this is it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, book with LOTS of examples and programming problems.
I use this book in a Computer Science class, and I feel that I have learned very well from this book...there are a lot of good examples, and a lot of good programming problems to help you learn. The book goes at afairly slow pace, so you can comprehend everything.I gave the book 4stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is confusing
This book offers good examples but the questions are confusing and badly worded it lacks lots of explination on the nature of the program to be written

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, easy to understand, many examples
This book has alot of examples, many that are very easy to understand, and some that get harder and you have to really think to figure them out.It has debugging problems, and it has programs that you have to write and solve.I know it is used in many school districts too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating. Started me on my cryptologic studies.
Reading this book gave me my start in my self study of cryptography, its science and its history. While I will not pretend to be anywhere near an expert on the subject, I found this book very insightful. It is an easy read, and not tedious in any way. It is meant as a "science for non-scientists" type book, and more of a history than anything else. (I have only managed to solve the first two cryptologic challenges at the end of this book, but am diligently working on the rest in my spare time.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
The Code Book is a delightful treatment of the subject of cryptography. It is a nice combination of history, science, warfare and politics.5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone remotely interested in codes!
I have always been fascinated by codes and Singh has put together a comprehensive book on the history of codes.Having read many books on codes, Singh was still able to enthrall me with some historical stories that I had not come across. It's not just technical stuff, but is written with the novice in mind as well. But the book holds enough technical information to keep the enthusiast interested as well. The version I bought has a crypt contest in the back, which I enjoyed working on - I was only able to solve the first 3 or so puzzles, but it was a lot of fun. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It is about time...
With so much talk about stories, games and interactivity, it is about time there is such a comprehensive book about the convergence of all these concepts.Andrew Glassner not only captures the present trends and experiments going on in these areas, but has presented an in-depth background and methodology of each. The advantage of this book is that it is from perspective of someone that has pioneered developments in each of these areas. His casual writing style allows us to enter the creative thought process evaluating such diverse examples and creative relationships.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring the convergence of Games and Stories
Lots of people have been thinking recently about the holy grail of computer games, that is the melding of good quality stories with fun computer games. On the surface, this seems like it should be easy, get some good writers together with some game programmers and voila, great things should result. This excellent book shows why things are not nearly as simple as they might appear to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brings interesting ideas into the mix
This book first gives an education in the elements of storytelling and in game design. Once this basis is established, the book then delves into the various issues and contradictions involved in the idea of interactive storytelling.

5-0 out of 5 stars What great ideas!
As a K-6 computer teacher, I am always looking for new ideas to share with my students. This book has great computer ideas for kids, especially those in K, 1st, & 2nd grades.Best of all the project instructions can apply to any wordprocessing & painting program! While the book claims to be a "Kid's Computer Idea Book," parental assistance would be necessary to read the instructions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars From Children's Literature Review
Using a question-and-answer format with mundane cartoon illustrations, the authors deal with typical questions young readers ask about hardware, software, the Internet, computer manners, and the "hard topredict" future of computers. Aside from a few geeky projects (aCD-ROM mobile), the book has things fun to know, such as a list ofemoticons, many interesting websites arranged by topic to try, and ahelpful glossary for those who have trouble separating an FAQ from a CPU.Some answers are pretty technical for younger readers but this is the kindof book you read in rather than through, and computer users from the mostnaive to the above-average in skills will find something of usehere.5-0 out of 5 stars More reviews from Publishers Weekly, San Diego, etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Magic School bus Gets Programmed--a book about computers
The magic school bus always teaches you lessons while making it exciting and quite zany. In this particular story, they are teaching you how to use computers, how computers work, and also why they are good to know about. The students in Ms. Frizzle's class go on another fieldtrip, this time into a computer. The class wants to find an easy way to do all of their jobs before school starts, so they use the help of a super computer and carlos' brother, Mikey-a very computer savvy person. When they start to program the computer to do their jobs for them, they are in for a surprise. Ms. Frizzle decides the best way for them to learn about the computer I s to actually go inside of the computer. They are then taken on a wild ride in the mind of a super computer. This book teaches about computers, and a good way to learn the hands on way. The book, for younger kids, mightbe boring because of its length and storyline, but I think it's a good book for children who want to learn about computers. ... Read more
