5-0 out of 5 stars Scripture and Science Combined
Dr. Humphreys does something in this book that is rarely seen: He treats science as a branch of theology and compares his observations in science to his observations in the Bible. The result, a short book about creation that is easy for anyone to read.If you question his scientific reasoning, he has an appendix as to the physics behind his theories. If you question his theology, he includes a thirty page exegetical appendix which explores seventeen passages of scripture, including Greek and Hebrew words.Highly reccomended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thinking outside of the box inside the box
As I suggested in the title for my review I'm trying to"think outside of the box inside of the box" The current cosmology theories assume a universe without boundaries and with no center-- the cosmology theory in Starlight and time assumes that there is a boundary and there is a center (we are in a box). I'm currently re-thinking my indoctrination into the evolution theory (another pre-conceived box). I have kept science separate from my faith in God and had always believed that the earth was very old. However, recently, I have found that this belief is irreconcilable with my belief in a loving God. I had never even read any creationist literature, thinking, like most people that it is "hokum". Most of the creationist literature is unconvincing to me. However, after reading icr.org I wanted to find out more about the RATE project in detail because I was especially curious about two research projects that seemed to be convincing, the helium diffusion in zircons (helium should have long ago escaped into the atmosphere after millions of years, yet why is it still in zircon?) and the radiohalos found in rocks (has there been rapid nuclear decay in certain periods of history?) So I read this book in conjunction with "Thousands, not Billions" by DeYoung. I realized that there are some very intelligent people who believe in a young earth and have made some major scientific contributions that will definitely have an impact on science, that is, if people would read this literature. I especially liked the paragraph in "Thousands not Billions" that says, "Some critics have argued that the young-earth viewpoint is a hindrance to scientific progress. They claim that belief in biblical creation returns us to the dark ages of naive, pre-scientific, and false views of natural history. However, such claims are mistaken. The questioning of radioisotope dating and the geologic time scale neither stifles inquiry nor hinders sceintific progress. Instead, it serves the healthy purpose of uncovering assumptions and bias. The reappraisal of earth history also opens up entirely new areas for study and research as the RATE project has shown." I think that Starlight and Time also opens up more possibilities in thinking "outside of the box" of current cosmology theories and uncovers assumptions and bias.
4-0 out of 5 stars Starlight and Time
This book was straight forward enough for a layman to understand, yet had all of the research listed in the back for more in depth study. Was also short enough to get through without losing interest, and to remember when you're done. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
This is a simple book to read through for younger children. Written by native Americans it is a "thanksgiving" book from their point of view, why native americans have always celebrated thanksgiving. It has no mention of pilgrams or not fully proven, overly romanticized stories as most thanksgivings are but simply a beautiful description of the season, the great harvest and respect for the world around them. A book of why the Native Americans Gave thanks during this beautiful season.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful book.
A simple but truly beautiful and wonderful book. To read with your children every morning and express thanks to the world, promoting connectedness and deep respect of all things. Teaching our children these important words will doubtlessly take us through these rough times and make the world as beautiful and peaceful as it was intended to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Way to Teach Gratitude
Anyone looking to teach the concept of Gratitude to children need look no further. "Giving Thanks" is the answer. The words, culled from the Thanksgiving Address (an ancient Iroquois message of gratitude still used today) simply, directly and eloquently give a roll-call of thanks from the Earth to the Sun and everything in-between. They evoke warm, inviting, even mythic images that I believe will delight most children. A personal, friendly face is put upon the elements that are usually looked at through the cold, impersonal microscope of science. The sun, moon, thunder and lightning, and even dead ancestors are transformed into Brother Sun, Grandmother Moon, Grandfather Thunder Beings and the Spirit Protectors, respectively. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bible
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

If you are looking for an in depth, true to fact Bible for your children ages 4 and up I definitely recommend this.It has been an awesome learning tool for my children!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to your bible story library!
I like the fact that it delves more into the stories than the typical children's bible- and we really get a feel for what the bible is saying. Also, I appreciate the chronological order which helps the readers- kids esp. to understand the connection all the stories have to one another.

Your children (and you) will fall into this book. Even before the stories begin, the illustrations envelop you in their lush, exotic worlds, where enchanted lakes yield treasure, virgins give birth, and elephants hold up the world. Marilyn McFarlane retells five classic stories in each of seven major religious traditions: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Native American and a miscellaneous category of Greek and other pagan myths she calls Sacred Earth. Many you'll recognize -- David and Goliath, the Loaves and the Fishes, the Buddha and the Bodhi Tree -- and others will be as fresh and captivating to you as they are to your children.Appends useful Pronunciation Guide, Glossary and list of Further Reading. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing Images
I REALLY don't like the color photo manipulations. High saturated and reversed photo collages looking like an art student 'statement' of some sort. In my opinion they are jarring and frightening to both adult and child! It is hard to understand how this distorted imagery is supposed to appeal to children... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual breadth - engaging text and luscious illustration
A book every parent and child can share and enjoy fully. Although writtenas a "child's book", Marilyn McFarlane has brought together thewidest range of spiritual experience and made it beautifully accessible andmeaningful to every age. The engaging text and rich illustration makethis a hard book to put down and a treasure for every home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine introductory book for children on sacred myths
I purchased Marilyn McFarlane's book for my three grandchildren, ages 8,10, and 12. We have been reading the book aloud and then discussing thecolorful illustrations. The sacred myths have spawned many questions fromthe children that we can research further. It's a wonderful introduction tothe sacred myths and religions of the world. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My children love this Bible!
My 7 and 9 year old really enjoy this Bible. The illustrations are wonderful and the text is simple enough for them to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for young and not so young
I bought this for my 9 yr old daughter. She enjoys using it because the weekly format makes it so simple. Each week has a Bible verse to memorize. Each day a fragment of the verse is given so as no to overwhelm. After each chapter/story there is a Prayer starter. It has received an Imprimatur from the Nat'l Conference of Bishops as well as Canadian Conference of Bishops. There is also a page containing the basic prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be) and mentions the use of the Rosary. This Bible is for anyone who finds a traditional Bible overwhelming. 1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT READ THIS FALSE NEW AGE BOOK, CHRISTIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Matthew 7:15 says, "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."Such is author Neale D. Walsch in "Conversations with God" and "Conversations with God for teens."The one and only Jehovah-God, Father of Jesus the Christ, has told us everything we need to know in His Holy, Infallible, Inerrant and Inspiring Word, the Bible.First of all, Walsch says there is no such thing as sin ("There is no such thing as right or wrong and that is what I have been trying to tell everyone", he writes).WRONG PER GOD!!!(John 3:16)Next, he says homosexuality is a "genetic trait" and should be "celebrated."WRONG PER GOD!!!!(Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13)These two items alone should demonstrate to any reasonable person that Walsch IS NOT RELIGIOUS AND IS NOT CHRISTIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars How life could be
Firstly, this is not a religious book; it's a spiritual self-help book in the form of real or imagined conversations with God (you pick). It's important to remember that this is how the author perceives things and we can choose to agree or disagree, it's all about free will. Our views don't have to match the author's, if that was the case we'd still be living in the dark ages and never learn anything new. Secondly, I'd like to ask the parents who refuse to let their teens read this book 'cause of the "immoral" chapter on sex, don't you think your sons and daughters are smart enough to think for themselves and make up their own minds?
2-0 out of 5 stars Consider this!!
To anyone who has or is planning on reading this book, consider this. This book has a lot of words which feel good and can make anyone's guilty conscience ease in thinking that "your own will is god's own will." (quoted from Walsh's books) If you will it, then God wills it because he loves you and wants you to live in freedom, right? Will is a precursor to action. If there is no such this an a 'right' or 'wrong' will, then in essence there is really no such thing as a 'right' or 'wrong' action. If someone else's actions hurt you, you feel that action is wrong. But the person who hurt you certainly had his feelings for acting that way, right? It was his will, therefore he was justified and right and god's right there to back him up. The victim is suffering. Where is his god when he needs him? Was the victim correct in believing the action wrong? Was the perpetrator correct in believing his action was right? In this book, god says that WE have the authority to decide what is right or wrong. The action is both right and wrong, right? Wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars so girly!
My daughter LOVES this Bible. She loves that it is just for girls!
5-0 out of 5 stars Kewl Bible!
I have had this bible for about six months, and I truly love it. It's all pink and purple, with informative and witty side information. All else is regular NIV text, with the footnotes too.I'm glad my Dad bought it for me, and it has helped me become a better christian. I definitely recommend buying this awesome bible!

5-0 out of 5 stars My girls liked them so much they took them to bed!
I bought this Bible for my girls who are 7 and 11.We bought the periwinkle purple leatherette one. Everything about this Bible is purple! Not only is the cover periwinkle purle, but the edges of the pages are lavender too!Inside there are highlights in pink (very girly) .There are memory verses writen in bigger letters in pink.Weekly journal entries, and one of my favorite features is that the weekly themes are the same as the Adult Women of Faith Bible, so Mom and daughter can both study the same topic. The Adult Women of Faith Bible topicsjust go into more dept. The devotions are very age appropiate and deal with being kind to your siblings, family and others.Different definitions are explained in pink.Wherever you see the pink butterfly that means the topic is linked to the Women of Faith Bible for adults.Side notes explain scripture.NIV.My girls liked their new girly Bibles so much, they even took their Bibles to bed with them the first day they had then! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A comment on reading levels
It says quite clearly that this book is for grades 6 and up. I believe it also says ages 12 and up in another section, but I think where people get really confused (and I have seen this many times on Amazon) is where further down it says "ages 4-8".
5-0 out of 5 stars This is good for much younger children.
This book works well as a read-aloud for as young as preschool age.The illustrations are very exceptional. My favorite is the painting of "Woman" on page 6.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to World Mythology
A previous reviewer said that s/he couldn't understand why this was listed as a children's book. All I can say is that while I would love to think our first grader is a genius, he lets us know when a story is over his head. When it's a little too hard, he'll ask questions. When it's a lot too hard, he'll give up and let his attention wander. He asks questions occasionally with this book, but he'll ask for me to read the next one about half of the time too.

Along with Susan Hunt's Big Truths for Little Kids, this is my favorite book lately to give to parents whose kids have just been baptized.I do it more for the parents than the kids, though my 5 year old loves this book. It really shows the meaning and value behind the church calendar and symbols, in a lucid manner with nice illustrations.(Its a cutesy story about mice).

This book has won a Southern Books Competition Award of Merit in Book Design from the Southeastern Library Association. This award is given in recognition of the books aesthetic appeal and design and for fine craftsmanship in its printing and binding. Congratulations to author Ruth L. Boling, designer and illustrator Tracey Dahle Carrier, printer Midas Printing, and the Geneva Press.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Church Mice
Ruth Boling's words and Tracy Carrier's illustrations combine to make a simple, yet powerful invitation for kids to experience the beauty of the Christian year. Most amazing are the details of Christian symbols on the mice's clothing and the facial expression on these very churchy mice. It's like looking at people in the pews I've known for years! The chart of symbols in the back is great. It would make a wonderful first communion, Sunday School, or Christmas gift. 5-0 out of 5 stars May be for Young Adults, but excellent for everyone
I didn't realize this book was categorized as "Young Adult" since I found it in the new books section of my library.Braude has done a stellar job of representing multiple aspects of the complex issue of womenand american religion. While she takes a chronological approach to thesubject, Braude still manages to represent all religions, includingalternative and native american religions on which much "primaryscholarship" does not exist (and therefore they usually get excludedin overview books like this one).I gained a real understanding of howvarious movements surrounding issues of immigration and within the variousProtestant sects emerged in the larger context of American History.Thisbook is one of a lengthy series on Religion in America, and I plan onseeking out the others to see if the quality is as good. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Her favorite book
My six-year old daughter lets everyone know this is her very favorite book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great as part of a collection
My 6 year old and 8 year old enjoy the story this book tells. It helps them to ask questions and start the process of understanding the "big picture".This book along with many others written for children about kindness and Buddhism are an important part of bringing up a well rounded person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Pictures and Good Stories
I purchased this book because it looked like a nice introduction to Buddah. My daugher and I both throroughly enjoyed the book. My daughter is 4 and a half and she first went through the book to look at it's pictures and attempted to figure out each story. As we read each story she enjoyed guessing what was going to happen next and how each animal would react by her first impressions by the artwork. It is nicely written for a read aloud book and contains timeless stories about interaction. I highly reccommend this book, even in you are not interested in Buddah as a religious figure, but looking for tales of common sense and relating to others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Children's Book of Faith
This is a wonderful anthology for all Christians. It keeps to the basics that we all agree on and includes prayers, poems, Bible stories, stories of Catholic and of Protestant heroes of the Christian faith and stories which encourage the development of morals. There are delightfully drawn pictures on every page. While preschoolers and kindergartners will enjoy some of these stories, others may take until children are in 6th grade before they understand the world enough to fully get all that can be gotten of stories they may enjoy with a simpler understanding at an earlier age. As you can tell from other reader reviews, even adults will find it an enjoyable and challenging book. I think that if you get it early enough, that it will be a book that children will grow into and love throughout the years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for both children and parent
I found this book just incredible. The stories are just wonderful for teaching the children valuable lessons and virtues. It's hard to explain the book, other than that my kids enjoyed hearing them, I enjoyed reading them, and the lessons in the stories challenge both child and parent alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Could have been broader
Nicely done.It is difficullt to find good books that teach the virtues of faith without being heavy handed.I would have liked a few more faith stories from non-Christian traditions. My seven year old is enjoying it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Family treasure
Charles Tazwell lived in a small town near Keene, NH. My gandfather had beena pastor in the area and I have family that stayed there after my grandfather left that parish. Charles Tazwell was a fiend of the family and justbeofre I was born, he autographed a copy for my family--
2-0 out of 5 stars Makes me sad and upset , not happy
I don't mind the $2 words; I don't mind that at all.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story;Wonderful Baby Gift!
My copy of The Littlest Angel was published in 1946 and cost $1.00! I remember sitting on my Dad's lap while he read it to my brother and me. I still cry when I get to the part about the contents of the box from under his bed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spark Great Conversation in Your Home!
My 7 and 9 year-old sons love this book.It talks to them about real experiences they have to deal with every day in real life such as losing stuff, games, and confidence. I had thought we would skip the parts that donot apply to our experiences, such as losing a body part or a loved one,but they want to hear it all.We read this book aloud and it generatesgreat family conversation. The boys kept having me renew the library copyI had, so I had to get my own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost and Found: A Kid's Book for Living Through Loss
Talks about the good that can counter balance loss in life.It starts with minor loss (things), then pets, friends, (moving, etc.), then death. It says it is good for someone as young as 8 years old, but mine would notlisten to the first chapter. Is has a "lecturing" quality tosomeone less informed. It also makes some good points.Contains black andwhite illustrations.I would recommend this one to students from the 4thgrade up, as well as teachers and parents. ...
