    Editorial Review

On an island off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her--that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can't live without her. The frenzied roundup that follows on the next "Pony Penning Day" does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal colt Misty is another story altogether. Read more

Ms. Bailey's reading group recommends this book to anyone who likes horses or to people who live on a farm.Even though this book is an older book we still enjoyed it.We liked the dialect that Henry used for Grandpa Beebe. We thought it was neat to read about a true story. We think you should give this book a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Horse Lovers Greatest Adventure
This book is a time-winding vortex into a world from a different time. Misty is a young horse which is raised in the wild, by her imperial mother which is a legend. Her mother and her are captured by two young children. A boy and a girl, Misty's mom escapes into freedom but her beloved daughter,Misty, is still being fed, groomed, and raised by the two children. They have tons of fun and exiting adventures together! In the end something amazing happens Misty.... Sorry you have to read it on your own! I think the authers main message is to try new things in life by showing tat through Misty. I absolutly adored this book and have read it now at least 4 times! I really hope you take my advice and read this outstanding book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book That Has Been Special To Generations Of Children
Strange in a way that I loved this book so much when I read it in fourth grade, because, ironically, in real life, horses kind of scare me. I think Walter Farley's book is magical and I hope others who read it find as much meaning as I did in the story of a boy named Alec Ramsey, who survives a shipwreck and befriends a magnificent black Arabian stallion. Yes, this enduring classic is basically a fantasy, but sometimes it takes fantasy to create a book that is capable of touching the human soul in the exact way this one does.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quality of the Black Stallion
I greatly enjoyed this book when I was younger, and I still like it. However, in recent years I have come to realize how prejudicially obsessed Walter Farley was about Arabians. Even in his book The Great Dane Thor, the horses only briefly mentioned in the book were Arabians. He didn't seem to realize that there were other breeds in the world. For instance, he had the Black's daughter, Black Minx run in the Kentucky Derby--a race exclusively limited to Thoroughbreds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written
This book was amazing! Terri Farley is such a talented author! I love the part when she is with the Phantom. It is so magical that I feel as though I were there. It's great the way Samantha is kept so realistic and even has weaknesses like all of us. I can understand how Samantha yearns for something she can't have but that makes her bond with the phantom that much stronger. I am sad to know that there is only one more book in this series. I can't wait to see what Terri has for us next!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Tale of Friendship
What a wonderful book! Captivating, exciting and all in all just a great story. A story of friendship, trust, and dealing with stereotypes. This entire series is a great read for any age, but this book has some special value in helping preteen and teenagers with stereotypes. Thank you Teri! I can't wait for Run Away Home in November! ... Problems occur again when Stevie and her friends go to an electronic store.Stevie enters a contest and wins a cassette player. All of her saved money is spent on new cassettes; she has none left for her ride. Her parents offer to pay for the ride if Stevie improves her school grades.A great math project saves the day.

This book tells a lot about society. It is about horses that either have problems or are being abused. What does that say about people in general? It tells us some people can be cruel. Society does not help horses that have been hurt or abandoned. People should not be allowed to have pets if they dont take care of them. That is where society comes in. People should prove that they are mature or responsible to take care of a pet before they purchase it. People should be able to have pets, as long as they take care of them properly and treat them kindly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Healing Horses, Healing Hearts!
I really enjoyed reading A Season of Hope. I could not put the book down. Lauren Brooke is the very best author for horse books. If you like horses YOU MUST READ THEESE BOOKS or you will miss out on something so wonderful that there is no word to describe it. I really wish that there were more than twenty books in the series. A Season of Hope is about a girl named Amy and how she is faced with the horrors of animal cruelty to horses, although she could be dealing with the law Amy tries everything she can to help the horses. Amy is greatly helped by her sister Lou, her boyfriend Ty who is also a stable hand, Amy and Lou's grandpa, Lou's fianc also the vet Scott, Joni a stable hand, and somehow Ty's father who hated horses but changed his mind after he spent time with them and then he finally understood that Ty belonged to work at Heartland. The phrase healing horses healing hearts means that in every book horses are healed and a person or people learn valuable life lessons. I love the Heartland books so much that for every book in the series I would give them all five stars, even more than that if I could. The Heartland books make me feel that I am inside the book watching it all. It seems as if I am watching television but different. My favorite part in the book would definitely be the ending but... you won't find out the ending unless you read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Horses,History and Humans
Gaudenzia is an outstanding blend of horses, history and human interest. As a child I loved the story of how the cart horse became a champion. I thrilled to the traditions and pageantry of the Palio. As an adult I read this book to my son and realized there was a second story of the rider, who had persisted in his love for a horse.Even if you are not a horse lover, there are also some subtle lessons of ethics and loyalty in the story.5-0 out of 5 stars This Is One Of The BEST Books I Ever Read!
I love horses, love to read, and Marguerite Henry is my favorite author, and out of all of her books (I've read them all), I think this is the BEST! About a year ago, I got a book from the library called "The Wildest Horse-Race In The World". I read it, and just loved it! I found out that it's original name was "Gaudenzia, Pride of The Palio". Now, I liked that name MUCH more than "The Wildest Horse-Race In The World"! Gaudenzia is the horse's name. It means "Joy of Living". The Palio is the race, which is run on July 2, the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and August 16. It is run around Siena, Italy, 3 times. There are many sharp, danguerous curves. Horses and riders are sometimes even killed. The prize for winning the race is a handpainted banner of the Blessed Virgin Mary.It is a religous race, and before it is run, the horses are brought into church, and blest, and the fantinos (riders) are blest by the archbishop. ...4-0 out of 5 stars An unusual and exciting horse story
This book is easily one of Henry`s best horse tales- yet it somehow seems to get overlooked these days. The story combines her familiar young person/horse bond narrative with a fascinating look at the very unique Italian tradition of the Palio horse race. Dating from medieval times, the Palio, held in Siena, re-creates the old drama of the various rival city states. Along with this slice of history, the author gives us the character Giorgio Terni, an idealistic young man whose dream is to become a trainer of horses. He evantually does achieve this, also becoming a Palio rider and forging a friendship with the high-strung yet lovely and fast mare Gaudenzia. Everyone is ready to give up on the mare becoming anything but a work horse- except Giorgio, whose faith in her talents never falters. He devotes all of his time to her, regaining her trust in people and getting her in physical shape to race. He`s truly a good role model for animal-loving youngsters. The story never loses its momentum- as a sixth grader reading it for the first time, I could`nt put it down. I also recall how upset I was when Giorgio must ride a different horse in one Palio race, and how the rules of the game indicate that he must try to prevent Gaudenzia from winning, evento the point of striking her with his whip. These realistic dilemmas give the book an authenic feel. Like the Pie in National Velvet, Gaudenzia is an underdog horse who comes out on top regardless. I hope this one makes it back into print! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars very unrealistic
Not the premise that it's hard to say goodbye to a horse you love to the point where you may temporarily stop riding because it hurts so much. No, it's just that the horse in question is a STALLION. For a junior exhibitor. For one thing, riders who are under a certain age cannot compete on stallions (at least in most classes), so I guess Veronica had to be content with never showinig Cobalt. Also, she was scared of him and did not ride him well, so it is a surprise she did not get badly hurt earlier. Why, why, why, are stallions always the mount of choice for children and teens in books? Mares and geldings are just as capable of generating mystery and intrigue.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I really don't like these books. They're more about people relationships compared to horses. They're some of the worst horse books I've ever read. "Thoroughbred" books and the "Ashleigh" series are way better. I bought some "Saddle Club" books before I didn't know about them, I've given them all away. Stay away from these books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting tale, good story!
This book was fun to read on the continuing adventures of Carole, Lisa, and Stevie. The Mountain Trail Overnight was almost ruined by the whims of nasty Veronica diAngelo, and how Carole's beloved horse Cobalt is killed by his owner, Veronica. The story does a good job of setting an example of how to rebound when your favorite horse dies. Excellent read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Kinda Befuddled
Okay, this is from the same person who wrote a previous review.A couple of reviews down.Anyway, I am twelve and I might be a little old to be reviewing a pony pal book, (I still secretly kinda like them) but the fact that the most recent reviewer obviously has no idea what they are talking about (in my opinion) is kind of bothering me.First of all, why don't people get the fact that ponies and horses are different because ponies are generally smaller than horses, but just because they are ponies, it doesn't mean that they are automatically small.(Read my previous review.)Second of all, just because someone is ten years old, it doesn't mean that they still can't fit on a pony.I take riding lessons and I am twelve years old.And to this day, I have never ridden a true horse.Just ponies. And I am not a puny person.I am above average in height and about average in weight so I'm no slimjim.Ponies are 14.2 hands or under and that is bigger than you think it is.Thirdly, Acorn shouldn't get his way all the time.It could be dangerous!I really hope that whoever wrote the previous review didn't truly believe that.I ride a difficult PONY during lessons and if I let him get his way all the time, I would have gotten hurt and so would other riders or their ponies and horses.Don't get me wrong, I would never, under any circumstances hurt a horse or pony.I sometimes hesitate to use a crop even when my instructors tell me it's alright. There's a difference between firm but kind and mean and creul.Lastly, the previous reviewer was wrong to call my previous review nasty. If it was her opinion that it was good and cool that ponies "leap" then it was her opinion. On the other hand, it was MY opinion that that was incorrect and sorta funny. If she thinks that the other person deserved an opinion on the matter than I do too. It's all a matter of freedom of speech. And by the way, I wasn't trying to be mean, I was just stating what I thought was true. There was no reason to call me or my review nasty. But then again, it WAS her opinion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Good
I think this book was kind of stupid and also I think the author has not much knowledge on horses because she calls them ponies. However, my cousin who is twelv knows about horses and says ten year old girls would not fitt on pnys because they are very little. I agree with the reviewer who said it was stupid and that acorn should get his own way. He or she is ritght. Anna and Pam And lulu is mean to their ponys. Please do not post nasty messages about how that reviewer who thought it was cool how ponies leap. He or She has the right to an opinion!

5-0 out of 5 stars Billy and Blaze books were my favorites as a child!
I can still remember sitting in the children's reading area of our public library (about 20+ years ago!) reading every Billy and Blaze book I could get my little hands on! If you have a child who loves horses and adventures, you need to purchase this and other books in the series. The books are easy to read with the right amount words to keep a youngster's attention, and the illustrations are perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars As Great As The Last
This mysterious and enchanting book takes Alec and Henry to a setting far from the one in the previous book. In the barren deserts of Arabia, they search for their black stallion in his own home. A thrilling tale of survival, and just as vivid, with a race for high stakes and a horse to beat any of the same caliber all thrown in too make the story plot thicken.

In it Pam is going to enter a horse show with lightining then lightining gets very ill.The pony pals do not know what is wrong with her.So they decide to have a barn sleep over and you won't believe what is making lightining sick.Read it and you will find out.You should buy all pony pal books no matter what your age are.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice story
It was good. It was about Pam's pony getting sick and no one knows why. I think the author did a very good job, it was quite a good reason. The pony pals did a good job figuring it out. It was a good example, and if anyone is ever in the same situation, do what they did in this book. The plot was good and interesting. Read this book if you like ponies!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can the pony pals solve the mystery?
Pam's pony Lightening gets sick because of a mystery illness which causes her an upset stomach. One night the Pony Pals take it in turns to watch Lightening to see if they can solve the mystery and give them the answer to the problem. When its Pam's turn, she sees a strange girl feeding Lightening apples.I really like the ending in this book, and I think the Pony Pals are pretty smart. ... This book is great.Sam has some scary things happen to her in it.I am really sad that Terri Farley is only making two more books in this series.Any ways this book is written very well in my opinion.I would recomend it to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars #1 fan of Terri Farley
I absolutely Luv this book! I totally agree with people out there, sometimes she (Terri) doesn't get as much credit as she deserves, I really enjoy the Phantom Stallion series and the Stallion of the Cimmaron and in MY opinion they are both great series! And if I may agree with someone else IF YOU DON'T LIKE THESE BOOKS WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING BY READING ONE!!!!!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Number One Author for children 15- down
My name is Talitha Waldner and i'm from Kendrick Idaho. ( i am fourteen years old) i've noticed that some kids don't really like Terri Farley's series, THE PHANTOM STALLION. so if they don't like it, why do they read it? i know that Terri Farley is doing her best. some books just don't quite turn out. i love writing books myself, the thrill of living your dreams in what you write is an accomplishment. but not everything (or every book!) is perfect. the one thing i love about Terri is her writing style. she gets the readers hooked with the first few words. the second thing i like best is how she thinks like a horse. i think that is totally awesome! and i really, REALLY think she deserves more credit than she gets.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Equine Experience
This book series is the cause of my Horse-Love. It's a series about three girls, Pam, Anna and Lulu (PAL) and their Ponies Lightning, Acorn and Snowwhite, who live in a town called little Wiggins and use their very sopecial Pony Pal Trail to reach each others houses (Anna lives next-door to Lulu, and Pam lives at the other end of Pony Pal Trail) and they're basically pretty average ten-year-old girls who have many adventures and have a lot of fun. Sometimes it's scary, like when Snowwhite got lost and ran away - in a snow storm that is, sometimes it's sad, like when their Pony Friend Winston died, sometimes it's beautiful, like when a Pony named Beauty had a Foal/or when the girls hand-reared a Foal called Baby (later named Lucky by his new owner) and sometimes it's just plain wonderful, like when the Pony Pals learned how to Ride Western, or when Anna and Acorn did Carriage Driving (believe you me, it's VERY FUN!). The beginning is Lulu moving to Wiggins, meeting Pam and Anna, saving Snowwhite and later she and Anna have to actually buy their Ponies, and the start of the Pony Pals and the climax of the series will reduce you to tears if you're a big softie like me...so, all in all I say: Thank You Mrs. Jeanne Betancourt!

2-0 out of 5 stars Just Didn't Hit It
When I started reading 'The Saddle Club' I was hooked. The books were interesting enough and had enough seriousness and humor to them. This one, not so much. It was just trying to create basically a repeat of the saddle club series. But it missed the target that saddle club hit completely. I know that many people will not find this useful because I am comparing. But it is impossible NOT to compare these series when they are so alike. But the reasons that this book just wasn't getting to me was because I thought that the characters were much too shallow, wheras the saddle club characters had each a unique complexity to them. The story lines were readable, with absolutely no suspense. (The story lines were too predictable) There were no cliffhangers at the end of each of the books. I have learned, that from reading lots of series that if you want the reader to read the next book, you want excitement, cliffhangers, where this series left me picking up the second one with reluctance and dread. All in all, these books just aren't the classic saddle club books that came before them. Cheap remakes of the series, I would have to call them. I know that many people will find these words hard to understand but I feel that I must speak my mind. In the meantime, I think that I'll stick to saddle club and pine hollow books instead... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just bought for my 50 yr old husband-
After all these years, my husband, John still talks about his love of this book. I just ordered the original Billy & Blaze in paperback (collectible) as a Valentine's gift for him. I can't wait to receive it and present it to him on our vacation. It's a 4th pressing of the original, but honestly - - I don't think he would care if it were the 104th. I believe we own our horses still to this day because of this book being in his childhood. How precious is that?Love you darling... Can't wait to see your face! Your K10

5-0 out of 5 stars Hoofs and Wheels
While women generally ride for pleasure to feel the wind and the movement of the horse beneath, a boys ride is different in that it is the power and speed of the ride that are most dear to him in these chariots of fire, the roar of the engine, the hoofs and the noise of the wheels that inspire their thrill. Boys tend to drive either their horses or their cars to see the height of their power, and whether the beauty of black or the silver shine of white, the joy of the command lies in the skill of the rider and the knowledge of his horse, or his engine, a sight that most can appreciate, understand, and admire.
