This is a wonderful young adult novel by Ms. Martin.Belle Teal is a thought-provoking and beautifully told story of one child's experience with desegregation.Belle is a strong female character who gracefully stands up for herself and her beliefs; a terrific role model for girls (and boys) learning to navigate a larger world in which people don't always agree. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A load of crock.
This book takes heartfelt letters written by girls trusting their most private experiences to a complete stranger (the author) -- and dissects them like a dead frog, telling the girls what they did "wrong" and how they "should" be acting, feeling, behaving if they want to a get a good grade, because this book GRADES every girl in their "First Person" segments.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pictures Are Worth A 1000 Words

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute MUST for your reading collection
Let me start by saying that I get goose bumps at the end of this book EVERY time I read it to my daughter, who is now 4.The illustrations and the rhymes are so wonderful. This was the first of the Bear books that I had read, and I ran right out to get the others, which are all equally fantastic. You won't be disappointed with this one.I am anxiously awaiting the release of Karma's next Bear book...

I don't know if I love the prose by Wilson or the incredible illustrations by Chapman more! The combination of the 2 has made another Bear book much requested in my home.

4-0 out of 5 stars The books are still great but the illustrations are different!
This set, 'Wayside School Boxed Set' is also known as 'The Wayside School Collection' and contains all three of the "real" books in the 'Wayside School' series. 'Sideways Stories From Wayside School', 'Wayside School is Falling Down' and 'Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger' are as entertaining as they always were. The price is very good and you even get the three boxes together in a box. Please note that you do not get the Wayside Arithmetic books, which really were for more devoted fans and did nothing to enhance the actual storyline found in the three major/main books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique Format Elevates this Book to a New Level
Julia and Patrick are best friends in this book set in Plainfield, IL.The two are working together on a silkworm project that they hope will be displayed at the state fair.Unfortunately, Julia, whose parents came to the United States from South Korea, is less then enthusiastic about the project because she feels that silkworms are too "Korean" and so she attempts to sabotage their project. What makes this book unique is not only Julia's voice, but also the discussions between Julia and the author in between chapters.Any aspiring writer would do well to read this book as Park offers excellent insight into the writing process, while those who just enjoy a good story will also be satisfied.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for readers and writers!
I purchased this book due to the fact that I would be attending a conference at which Ms. Park is speaking (I like to get an idea of the presentors background).I knew that Ms. Park is talented, but never did I expect to enjoy it so very very much.As an author I found the entries between the chapters to be facinating. What a great idea. And the story itself was amazing as well.I can not say enough about the whole package other than READ IT!Can't wait to meet you Ms. Park!Julia (not Julia Song, but still Julia)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Julia and Patrick have to do a project for the Wiggle club.Wiggle is the pet name for the WGGL (work grow give live) club, an extra curricular organization similar to 4H. The two kids partner up to do a project that can go to the state fair as both an animal husbandry and domesticarts entry. When Julia's mother suggests raising silkworms, Patrick is excited because such a project was unheard of. Julia is anxious because it is too Korean. Linda Sue Park meets all expectations as an author and writes a wonderfully entertaining story. Park does a great job in staying focusedon the life of one girl, yet touching on tangents of other issues. Julia Song is a well-developed character that grows beyond her personal limitations to understand herself, hermother, little brother, and friend. In the character of Julie, readers experience the life of a young girl who learns to reconcile being Korean and American. It is refreshing to read about an experience with a world that in many ways is not Black and White. In less drastic, yet by no means less dramatic ways, one is confronted with the issue of animal husbandry and cruelty. Julie learns that to get the silk, she must kill the pupae, which she has grown to love. Unlike other popular examples of Asian American literature, Project Mulberry is not riddled with flashbacks; it stays in one single narrative that is direct and still charming. Project Mulberry is a good read for third to fifth grade students.

Editorial Review

In Cynthia Kadohata's lively, lovely, funny and sad novel -- winner of the 2005 Newbery Medal -- the Japanese-American Takeshima family moves from Iowa to Georgia in the 1950s when Katie, the narrator, is just in kindergarten. Though her parents endure grueling conditions and impossible hours in the non-unionized poultry plant and hatchery where they work, they somehow manage to create a loving, stable home for their three children: Lynn, Katie, and Sammy. Katie's trust in, and admiration for, her older sister Lynn never falters, even when her sisterly advice doesn't seem to make sense. Lynn teaches her about everything from how the sky, the ocean, and people's eyes are special to the injustice of racial prejudice. The two girls dream of buying a house for the family someday and even save $100 in candy money: "Our other favorite book was Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kira-Kira
Life in the 1950's was hard on ethnic groups. One such case is the Japanese family Takeshima. Kira-Kira was written from the daughter Katie's perspective. When Katie and her family move to Georgia she feels bad that she is moving away from her home in Iowa and all of the memories there. Will it be worth it for Katie and her family to move, or will she regret going and feel sad? Read Kira-Kira to find out if Katie overcomes her apprehension and makes new memories and friends. I really liked this book and thought it was saddening, although it was a sad book it was also a great book. I would recommend this book to people that really enjoy books that are based in the past and narrated from the characters personal memories.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kira-Kira
When I read this book, I thought that it was a very good book. I couldn't stop myself from reading it and I think you should read it too. I recomend this book. It was very sad and it was very emotional. Even though the story is not a true story, somehow you feel like it is a true story and that means that the author wrote this book well. I hope that if you do read it you will enjoy reading it and I hope you do read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Glittering Book
Life couldn't have been better until Katie and her family moved to Georgia. Katie and Lynn Takeshima lived in Iowa and went to school like every Japanese girl would. Both their parents went to their store every morning to work. But when they lose the store because no one wanted to buy Japanese original products. The family had to move to Georgia where they had family, Katie's uncle. Once they moved there their mother had a baby boy, Samson. After a year of nothing really happening, Lynn got really sick with iron lose and later on cancer. After going through some tough times, Lynn died New Years morning. This book is worthy of Grace Livingston Hill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational for Children
A change of seasons is in the air. Fletcher the fox doesn't understand and now he's worried.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful language and art--highly, highly recommended
It's rare that a children's book comes along where both the artwork and the language reach the heights offered up by Fletcher and the Falling Leaves. The story's premise--a young fox attempts to protect his favorite tree from the encroachment of autumn, trying in vain to keep it leaved, literally to the last leaf--could have easily become overly sentimental and cloying.Instead, there is a true sense of sadness and empathy leavened by some wonderfully quirky moments all of which lead to a close that is as satisfying as it is moving. As it is, the story could certainly have stood on its own for plot alone, regardless of language or art.But the artwork is simply sensational, the impressionistic watercolors perfectly matching each page's tone and sentiment, matching the movement of time through day and night, from fall to winter, culminating in perfect pace with the plot in a final illustration of the tree that is simply beautiful. It's a good book for the story, an excellent book for the story plus the art. What makes it a great book, truly a beautiful book, is the language, which never fails to please, to startle, to jostle. The words are sharp and vivid, the rhythm carries you along, and the rhymes and slant rhymes sneak up on you in singular moments of sheer joy in language. The book is a pure clinic in children's picture books as all three elements--plot, art, and language--each alone a superior example, come together to create a whole even greater than its impressive parts.A great book, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, beautiful illustrations
This is a beautiful book.Fletcher is a young fox that has noticed the forest is changing as the summer comes to an end.He has a favorite tree. When he sees the way the leaves are changing he thinks that the tree is sick.He does everything he can think of to help the tree keep it's leaves.Of course in the end he can't save the leaves and he goes home very sad with the last leave that was on the tree. The next day he wakes up and goes to his tree and is mesmarized by the sight of the tree. It's beautiful it's covered in icicles and shining in the morning sunlight. He asks the tree if it is okay and the tree in a sense answers him. The wind blows and the tree shakes and the icicles tingle. To Fletcher it sounds like the tree is laughing and he takes this to mean that the tree is alright. The illustrations are wonderful and the last one of the tree with the icicles is fabulous it is done with a type of glitter.Very pretty effect.I very much recommend this book ... Read more

I have all the books I'v read all of them three times.Samantha is so nice to ALL her friends.I really like "Happy Birthday Samantha!"It's sooooooo funny!

4-0 out of 5 stars HAPPY ENDING FOR ALL!
The most charming book so far in the American Girls series. Samantha's life in turn-of-the-last-century New York presents in my view the series' most well-rounded picture into society at that time, with its incorporation of orphans and the working class in among its economically-privileged main characters. The writing here was the best of any American Girl novel and the dialogue seemed knitted to its era and not anachronistically modernized in the slightest. Yes, I know the improbable ending is the fabric of fairy tales but it still makes for a happy conclusion to a nice visit back a hundred years ago in time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Samantha Captures Victorian America
One of my favorite American Girls books, Samantha captures the story of victorian america.Although I missed the tv making of the book, I find the Samantha book a near classic for Christmas. The victorian times is among one of my favorites so this series by the American Girls became my favorite. This series is very innocent and sweet about the daily life of a normal victorian girl, but it touches on the authenticity of the victorian era just as the Emily Cobbs series in the Gifted Girls books, but without the mystery and adventure.Samantha is a little young for my 13 year old sister because of its simplicity in story, but alright for younger readers up to 10. ... Editorial Review

"Here is the book that Romeo would have given Juliet; Charlie Brown would have given Snoopy; and you can give to some very special friend" proclaims the back cover of this small, whimsical book. Written in 1965 by Sandol Stoddard Warburg, it still makes the perfect present for your best friend. Not just any run-of-the-mill best friend, though. This book is for the kind of friend who yells for you when you get lost in Grand Central Station or pretends to save you when you pretend to be drowning. Or, as Warburg puts it, "You know how to be silly / That's why I like you / Boy are you ever silly / I never met anybody sillier than me / till I met you." Read more

I happened upon this little red book while searching for a birthday present for my little cousin.I read it through, and teared up because it so aptly describe how I feel about my husband.I bought it and gave it to him...I think this is book is wonderful for expressing how you feel about someone you really really love/like.

2-0 out of 5 stars Strange Little Book
This book definitely gives some unique and nice reasons for liking someone. I liked most of them. However, for some of them the author is so "real" about why people like other people that he lists not necessarily healthy reasons. For example, one page says that they like the other person because if they get mad at them, they also get mad back...when someone is nice to you when you're mad at them it makes you want to punch them in the nose. True? Sometimes. But not how I want to teach my child to be. Another example is they like the other person because when they say something funny the other person laughs. Does that mean when someone doesn't laugh you shouldn't like them?
5-0 out of 5 stars A great, funny look at friendship for mature kids and childish adults
I'm sure this is supposed to be a children's book, and kids will definitely enjoy it.But the fact of the matter is that "I Like You" is the warmest love note you could possibly give your spouse or best friend. It contains the reasons we like our friends -- the games we play, the fun we share, etc. -- and also the things that are so true about friendships that are often overlooked, like paying attention when the other person is throwing up ("you don't just pretend to be looking at the birdies") and engaging in a decent fight when the other person's mad ("it's awful when the other person isn't.They're just so nice and oo-hoo you could just about punch them in the nose.")Give this book to someone you love from age 4 to 144! ... The Castle in the Attic was about a 10 year old boy named William who lives with his mom and dad in Pennsylvannia. And he has a baby sitter that stays with him for 13 years and desides to go back to her home in England.William doesnt want her to go so he takes her picture of her husband who died in the world war 2.She finds out and is said for him and gives William a go away gift which was a huge toy castle with a led knight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories!
This is a great book for children. My mother read this to me... I guess twenty years ago and I still think fondly of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Castle in the Attic
Castle in the Attic is a masterpiece beyond childhood recognition. Ms. Winthrop has woven a tale not confined to the limits of a child's imagination, but one that tests the mature intellect. Christian parents will be pleased to discover that while magic is a recurring theme in this book, it proves to be mearly a side story to the more important and intreguing prospect of William's character development. I recomend to any parent this book for their young son. It speaks of Honor and Chivalry in the face of evil, of strength and tender souls. What this book speaks of in regard to emotional strength is something that every child, and even adult, needs to discover; That to Cry is not Cowardice, to be tender hearted is not Weakness, and that Honor and courage is the Heart of a Knight. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars eye opening
The Wave is a book about a high school where a social studies teacher performs an experiment on the students. This expirement creates a group that almost the whole school is involved in.It is frighteningly similar to the Nazis.
3-0 out of 5 stars Corny, but definitely worth a read
I read this book because I had seen the made-for-TV movie it's based off of.Let me just say, it helps if you haven't seen the movie beforehand. The movie is filled with corny dialogue and bad actors. In the book, there is no bad acting to distract you, and you can focus on the real message of the book: community and discipline can achieve great things, but you must remember to never give up your individuality and humanity. The book conveys this message nicely. It is a perfect read for middle and early high schoolers.(It's short, and an easy read)This is a message that all kids should take away from school, and it's probably one of the most important messages they will ever learn. There is no excessive violence or bad language to worry about, although the premise of a militaristic high school group may be too intense for some young kids. There are some points that don't work (like the fact that it took about a week for "the wave" to get that far--I highly doubt even the most impressionable youngsters will take to something that fast.Just remember that life in Germany pretty much sucked at the time Hitler took over, which is why its citizens took to Hitler so quickly.)But, overall, this band of kids and their overzealous teacher will make for a great (and incredibly important) lesson for kids.Definitely recommended for ages 10-15.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wave - Todd Strasser
I read this book recently, and it is truly awesome! In a nice little story, it deals with the issues of group/peer pressure, how power can get to a person's head, and the Nazis from WWII.It was amazing that this could actually happen in a school, and I think I was further drawn to the book by the fact that it is set in a high school with high school activities going on.his book is a great read! ... These are truly a wonderful grouping of books that everyone should read if not own. I loved the movies and couldn't keep waiting to find out what happens, so bought the books. Read them all 1-6 in about 6 days...just couldn't put them down. Lighthearted reading that is enjoyable.

She envisioned a seven-part series, each part of which was knocking on 800 pages. That was a serious bit of world building right there. Then, she wrote the first book, a whopping multi-page monster I haven't read yet. So let's just admire her for making an effort of that magnitude.
