5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting Story of Diversity
This is a companion book to the documentary about the Paper Clip project started at Whitwell Middle School outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the late 1990s.What began as a class to teach diversity to a mostly white southern group of schoolchildren evolved into a project of collecting 6 million paper clips (the clips are historically tied to the Holocaust) to represent the Jews who perished during that dark period. This book is a wonderful story that shows what can be accomplished when children are determined and how a relatively small idea can grow into something significant that can affect millions of people. This one is highly recommended for children of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves 10 stars
I happened upon a review and ordered the book. When it arrived, I read it with a lump in my throat and my eyes tearing up.My 72 year old mother and I were driving to another town when I started telling her about it.I couldn't get that damn lump out of my throat and pretty soon my voice started quivering and I started crying. She just reached over and held my hand as I got my composure back.I was done, though, I told her she had to read it.She did. Afterward, she took it to one of her clubs and shared it.It's just a 10 minute read, but it sure provides plenty of emotion. I am so glad I happened upon it. A glorious story. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The power of a symbol.
Those of us who are horrified by the murderous actions of the Nazis during the Holocaust pray that such a terrible event will never happen again. It is heartening to know that there are a number of middle school children in Whitwell, Tennessee who did their share to raise the consciousness of people from all over the world.Whitwell, a small town of white Anglo-Saxon Protestants with a population of only 1,600, is now internationally famous for its "Paper Clip Project."

5-0 out of 5 stars Become an Instant Torah Scholar with this Series!
You can be an instant Torah scholar with this fantastic commentary series! Each chapter is laid out as follows:1.a very brief summary of the parsha; 2. a more in depth overview of the parsha; 3. a synopsis of commentary from the world's most famous Torah scholars, both ancient and modern; 4. major themes of the parsha; 5. compelling questions at the end of the chapter regarding the parsha and commentary.5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible and thought-provoking
My wife and I recently decided we'd like to give our young children a more explicit introduction to moral values and figured that the torah would be an excellent vehicle (plus it would introduce the kids to torah). The problem was that neither my wife nore I is by any means a torah scholar - I'm a reform Jew and hadn't really done any bible study since hebrew school many, many years ago. I don't know enough to interpret the biblical texts myself and the full Talmud is far more than I was looking for. So, I went looking, in vain I feared, for a volume that would provide an accessible introduction to the bible. 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use Commentary
This is one of the best Torah Commentaries for use by people who do not have access to the original Hebrew. It includes a summary of each weekly reading and in depth examination of a few important themes usingtraditional and modern commentaries. I recommend this book for thebeginner and intermediate student to gain access to methods of commentaryand the advanced student who wants ideas and new ways of looking at thetext. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Emphasizes the spiritual meaning of Bar and Bat Mitzvahs
In the frenzy of preparing for the big day, it can be easy to lose the focus and meaning of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Many kids may wonder "What is this really all about? Why am I doing this?" This inspiring, clearly-written book urges kids to think about the deeper meaning of the ceremony and of being a Jew. The emphasis is on spirituality and being mindful of God's presence everyday. I especially liked the section with suggestions and resources for acts of tzedakah as well as little mitzvahs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great companion book for Kids
This version of Putting God on the Guest List is the perfect companion to the adult version. We liked it so much that we started a fund at our synagogue so that every child beginning the bar or bat mitzvah processreceives a copy.In an era where the party has become more important thanthe ritual, this book help focus a child on the religious importance of hiscoming of age.A wonderful read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars KOSHER BY DESIGN: KIDS IN THE KITCHEN
This is a wonderful new cookbook for kids. The good people at Mesorah Publications have spared no expense creating an accessible and appealing cookbook that is full of fun for both children and adults. The brightly colored design and jump-off-the-page graphics will surely grab any reader. Here's an example of instructions from page 9 (colored green and pink) on how to keep your kitchen kosher: "Be a Kosher label detective...Meat and dairy never mix...Yuk! Creepy crawly things don't belong in kosher food!"

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful first book about Hanukkah
This book is an ideal choice for very young children, as it portrays a fun and interesting view of Hanukkah that is very much in keeping with a small child's own perceptions of the holiday, namely, candle lighting, dreidel playing and latke eating. The story is simply told and the illustrations are colorful and reminiscent of Eric Carle's work. It is a quick reading book that my two and half year old enjoyed a great deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Autobiography by Far! by Sammy K. 4th Grade
I am Jewish, and I learned a lot from this book. I learned about life in Warsaw, and about the time period around World War I. It shows how that time compares to this, and how much more we have now than back then. Lots of people take electric lights for granted. This book shows what it was like to live through freezing weather, hunger, and stress about war.
5-0 out of 5 stars The childhood of a master story- teller
Singer just has it. These vignettes of his childhood do not have the emotional power of his greatest stories but they are rich with life, insight and humor. And somehow he tells stories even when he is making simple descriptions of his early life. This work too tells the pain and poverty of his childhood and the difficulty of his parents' lives. It is too a tribute to a world - gone .

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
When our first child was five, she asked us for her very own prayer book. This was the one we chose, and it has been wonderful both for her and her brother.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of our favorites!
As the foreward of this book says, daily Jewish prayers instill values in children. When we say a prayer before we eat, children understand that it's important to be thankful for what we have, including food on the table. When we pray before going to sleep for our safety, kids learn to be thankful for their lives. The bottom line:we love this book.It has prayers for greeting the new day, and bedtime prayers. When our beloved pet cat passed away this week, we opened the book to the prayer for mourners.By coincidence, the page included an illustration of an elderly woman with a cat!The words and illustrations are right on target for children, and parents will appreciate it, too.I highly recommend this book, and plan to buy it as baby gifts for family and friends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Defining moments in the lives of thirteen Jewish Americans
When young readers look at the faces on the cover of "In the Promised Land: Lives of Jewish Americans," they should immediately recognize Steven Spielberg.Depending on how much they now about history and the news they might recognize Harry Houdini and Ruth Bader Ginsberg from the faces on the cover, and maybe Judith Resnick. But they will not recognize most of the faces any more than they will recognize most of the names of the thirteen distinguished Jewish Americans for whom author Doreen Rappaport and illustrators Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu have picked for this book. For example, I recognize the name Jonas Salk, but I do not know his face the way I do Albert Einstein.
5-0 out of 5 stars A picturebook for grades 2-4
Here's a new approach to biography: a retelling of pivotal moments in the lives of notable Jewish Americans in In The Promised Land: Lives Of Jewish Americans, a picturebook for grades 2-4, embellished with drawings by Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu. 'Notable' doesn't necessarily translate to 'famous', as these stories show: among the featured are frontier tailor Jacob W. Davis, who invented the durable overall design Levi Strauss came to sell, Harry Houdini, master of magic, and Asser Levy, who fought against unfair treatment of Jewish citizens in Amsterdam - in 1654. Thirteen extraordinary Jewish people are treated to one-page detailed biographical sketches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bible
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better title would be "The Jewish Bible for *Christian* children"
Written from a christian perpective.Several references to Jesus, and the "Old testament" not only in the introduction - examples - the patriarchs live 1500 years before Jesus. There is a painting depicting Jesus being circumcised (as stated in the caption.Other inaccuracies such as the hebrew letters "yod, hei vav, hei"is usually written as "Yahweh" - um, only Jehovahs wittnesses people! One story suggests a sacrifice of a young woman which would never have been permitted. (Judges 11)Torah commentary teaches she lived in seculsion (the sacrafice being she never married or had children)
3-0 out of 5 stars Annoyingly written from a Christian perspective, but...
I read the others Readers' Reviews, and was also taken aback by the stated Christian perspective in a book supposedly geared towards Jewish families. I had a chance to flip through this book, however, and while the Christian perspective is annoying (especially for someone trying to raise a Jewish child in a town where we are a minority), the illustrations, maps and charts somewhat redeem the few Christian references in the text. In typical DK fashion, this book's annotations provide an good overview of the Tanakh, and tell the stories in ways that are neither overly simplified nor overly florid, as found in many biblical texts written for young people. A parent could choose to point out to the child that we live in a world with many religions, and that there are other religions whose roots share a common history with ours. I do agreed, however, that it is unfortunate to find such references in a purportedly "Jewish" book.

5-0 out of 5 stars In a town of fools, how can there be wise men?
This is a fun book. The ten stories that are included in the book are amusing and easy to read in a way that is very attractive to children. The stories of Chelm have not failed to get a laugh (sometimes a little giggle and sometimes something more) each time that we have read them. However, the book goes one step beyond the stories themselves. Every story is followed by 3-4 questions that you can ask your children after reading the story. The questions can be helpful in prodding your child to think about some of the deeper meanings behind the story as well as to measure their understanding of what makes the people of Chelm foolish yet, ultimately, wise in their simple ways. This book is a keeper.
