4-0 out of 5 stars do you like a stories inside a greater story?
The story King Arthur, which was written by Roger Lancelyn Green, is a truly exhilarating adventure set in the middle ages, and it contained many fascinating characters such as King Arthur, who was the king of Logres and who was one of the most important characters in the story; another character is Lancelot who was one of the best Knights of the round table and went on many quests, bringing much honor to Logres, and was quite important through out the book; another character would be Queen Morgana le Fay, she was not only a witch, but also the sister and nemesis of King Arthur, she often tried to capture or kill him and his knights, but in the end she makes peace with him; last but not least is Merlin, he is one of the best know characters, he is a wizard who saves King Arthur life twice, and foretells the future many a time; eventually he is buried alive by Lady Nimue until he is needed once again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you needed to know about King Arthur but were afraid to ask!
This was the first King Arthur book I ever had. In more recent years I've read Le Morte D'Arthur, the Mabinogion, Bulfinch's Age of Chivalry, and a hundred othercollections, some for children and some for adults. This is still the best-written, most comprehensive version I've found.
1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL ARTHUR!!!
This book was the worst!!! I usually enjoy reading books, but I didn't enjoy one little microscopic segment of this book!!!It was really hard to understand, and it felt like that all Roger Lancelyn Green cared about was death!! I mean really in one chapter I counted that 12 people died!!! In one single chapter!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Car Trip with Kids
This was wonderful for our vacation travel, and really helped keep the peace. With three kids who are almost always bored and rambunctious in the car, this was a travel lifesaver. They love the classics like myths, Shakespeare, and King Arthur. This story was not new to them, but they still listened attentively. We never heard a peep.Sean Bean's accent is lovely to listen to and added authenticity to the story. We are planning to buy more audio books for future trips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully narrated and fairly complete introduction to Arthur
As others have mentioned, it's truly Sean Bean's narration that sets this recording apart. He does a fabulous job making the story come alive and, well, his voice is just utterly lovely as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable for those long car rides
My boys enjoyed this and listening to Sean Bean's voice lent a nice touch to it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
The stained glass window illustrations and simple, straightforward text allow readers to learn about young King Arthur. This book is a staple for me each year, as I read it to my second graders. Each year they love it! Sabuda provides a cool author's note too! Sabuda is a giftedstoryteller/book creator!

5-0 out of 5 stars Step through a stained glass window into the medieval world.
This is, quite simply, a beautiful book. I wish it had been a little longer! The story, as the author admits at the end, comes right out of the Malory version of the Arthurian legend, which is perhaps the best known. This story, therefore, comes as no surprise to those of us who love King Arthur. The surprise here is in the illustrations. He has put us into the medieval tale in a new way by illustrating the story with stained glass windows. Well, that's how they look, anyway. And we are drawn through them into Arthur's time. Sabuda admits that he wrote and illustrated this one especially for the boys, and I can see how it would appeal to them. But there's nothing here that would turn off a girl's interest, either.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL
This was the absolute WORST book that I have ever read. It the dullest, most boring thing since I learned algebra. After the first chapter, I already wanted to kill myself. But I gave it another chance. And another, and another, and another. I was continually dissapointecd. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THIS ABORATION OF A BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars t.h. c.s. j.r.r, j. k.- doesn't anybody in England have a first name?
The Once and Future King, which is built upon and uses text from the Sword in the Stone, is one of my favorite books. Much like the Hobbit is a sometimes silly preamble to the Lord of the Rings, The Sword in the Stone is the less serious story of King Arthur as a boy that sets the stage for the novel, The Once and Future King. And like the Hobbit, while it can be occassionally silly- a deadly serious and powerful story is just below the surface.
5-0 out of 5 stars classic stuff
The Swrod in the Stone is the first in a mini-series, and by far the best. The others are really flat in comparison.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty darned good
I'm an adult reader, and I have to disagree with most of the customer reviews.I thought Book 1 of the trilogy was brilliant, and found Book 2 to be a significant let-down.But this third book carries through on the concept and the story, and redeemed for me the meanderings of the second book.Even at his least effective, Crossley-Holland far surpasses most of his competition -- say, the Harry Potter books -- in imagination, writing excellence, and vision.Leaving many questions unanswered at the end may dissatisfy those who want everything wrapped up nicely, but is truer to life than tidy conclusions.I have also to disagree with the reviewer who thought there was "room for a fourth book" -- he clearly misses the whole concept. The Arthur-in-the-stone story is over. The real Arthur is home. We're done.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting conclusion for a series and room for a 4th.
We will always owe an English friend for introducing us to this series. As she gave us the third book in the series my wife and I immediately bought the first two from Amazon so that we could read them in order.
3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing
Kevin Holland Crossley's King of the Middle March left me wondering. I absolutely loved the first two books, but King of the Middle March is....a bit dull. I never cared for the stories inside the stone, and this book takes away for Arthur de Caldicot's life experiences...the chapters about King Arthur are longer than those of our young narrator. I wanted to know: What's going to happen to Gatty? Will Serle ever return?? Will Serle marry Tanwen? Will Arthur marry Winnie? Will Arthur marry Gatty? Will Arthur ever be happy if he doesn't marry Winnie or Gatty?? Will Arthur ever get Bonamy back? And will Arthur ever see his little friend Bertie again??....many unanswered questions..I read quickly because I was eager to see what would happend with Arthur's life in the Middle March. On the topic of Arthur's mother, I like the way it ended...but everything else...was slightly disappointing. This story felt very rushed towards the end of the book. Mr. Kevin Holland-Crossley's first two books were excellent, but the third doesn't quite live up to it predessesors as most books don't. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the Sword and the circle
The sword and the circle
5-0 out of 5 stars Old flappy's bucket o' reveiw
The Sword and the Circle by Rosemary Sutcliff is a very interesting book. It is about a boy named Arthur Pendragon, son of both Utha Pendragon and Igraine Pendragon. He starts off as a foster boy in Britain in the medieval times. He has no idea that he is heritage to the throne of Great Britain. Until one day his foster brother (who is a knight) is ready to partake in a tournament but Arthur forgot his sword at home. Not being able to get in, Arthur decides to take a sword out of a stone as easily as if it went out of a sheath. (He has no idea that pulling the sword out would make him the King of Britain.) Then he finds himself king at the age of sixteen. Arthur wants evil to leave his lands, so he asks knights to take up quests. Can a single man do the deed? This book offers a certain quality, which is hard to find in books that make the readers feel as if they are part of all of the action. It's fast pace makes it almost never boring. I would recommend this to anyone with an active imagination and a somewhat sense of maturity. This book is a little bit graphic so it should be for ages 10-14 and if you are a girl this may not be for you, unless you are used to graphic violence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Analysis
The Sword and the Circle by Rosemary Sutcliff is a story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. There are many variations of this story. Sutcliff keeps her story very traditional. Her book includes stories of all the major Knights of the tales, from Sir Lancelot to Tristan and Iseult. This is a good book, because each chapter has its own tale and it follows the original story very closely

4-0 out of 5 stars Just right for kids who are still learning to read
If you buy this book expecting to introduce your children to Arthurian myth, you will probably be disappointed. This book keeps only young Arthur, Merlin, and the barest outline of the beginning of the story of King Arthur.5-0 out of 5 stars A review for this edition
The other review on this page mistakenly refers to this edition as the novel by T. H. White. Its not. This edition is a short adapation for young children of how King Arthur became king.Maccrone's Arthur is a young boy, and he is "tricked" by Merlin into freeing the sword from the stone.Boddy's illustrations are great.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!

4-0 out of 5 stars Windsor Jr. High-Kyle W.
This book is a classic. While it didn't meet all of my expectations, it was still a very good book.It was researched excellently, down to every detail.Crossley-Holland carried on the series in a way that kept me hooked throughout the entire book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great story depicting the early twelve hundreds, but with reservations.
I usually do not read the reviews of others until I have written mine so I won't be influenced.I very much enjoyed the first book in the series, The Seeing Stone.I was surprised at how many "kid reviews" were run and have to repeat something I did in my first review.I consider these works by Kevin Crossley Holland outstanding and gave it five stars just as I give this one. However, I am concerned about the emphasis that the books are for children. It is true there is no profanity to the extreme, I refer to the implications of sexual activities that children under their teens may have problems with.If young children are to read these then their parents should screen them to discuss certain elements. There are also very good philosophical concepts that may be beyond the understanding of young children. This comes from a retired teacher and principalnow turned author and magazine publisher.
5-0 out of 5 stars At The Crossing Places
I really enjoyed this book. It was very interesting and it also had a lot of facts in it. The main character, Arthur is a gallant person, he always tries to do his best and work his hardest. As he becomes a squire, he goes through many twists an turns in his life and in his life in his seeing stone. This book is one of the best I've read. It construes a young boys life back in that time period. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kid tested, mother approved
This book was one of three Bullseye Classics we bought for my son's second grade English class. He picked this one up as soon as the box arrived and had it read within an hour.He loved the stories and was able to re-tell them to his little sister. I hadn't heard the stories about "Big Hands" or "What do women want?"This collection really got his imagination going and he wants to read more about King Arthur.
1-0 out of 5 stars Awful writing, terrible grammar, bad for children
In addition to the ham-handed telling of the story, the writing in these Bullseye books is just terrible. Half-sentences. Written like this. Or this.Part of the value of such books is that young readers will learn to read "chapter books." But the English and grammar in these books is so abysmal as to render them useless for this task.I was very disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for reading to a younger child
I agree that this is not the finest book written on King Arthur, but it is one that can be read aloud, and easily enhanced by a grandmother anxious to read these legends toa second grader---- finding something appropriate for a young listener has not been easy! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The Dragon's boy
Artos, an orphan, housed since birth by sir Ector and Lady Marion. Artos is in many ways just like Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. Until one day when he must go out into the woods in search of Sir Ector's missing brachet hound. He enters a cave in hopes that the hound is within, but instead of a hound he finds an old, but very wise dragon. From the knowledge that the dragon gives Artos, he is able to befriend and become an equal to Cai, Bedvere and Lancot, three boys around his age but much higher in ranking, or so it seems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unique Arthurian story
Everyone's read the oft-accepted story of King Arthur's boyhood, right? A seemingly orphaned fosterling is raised by kindly Sir Ector, doesn't really know who he is. This story gives a mild but enjoyable twist on the old tale.5-0 out of 5 stars The Dragon Boy
I loved this book and it was so cool because I liked the dragon he was cool looking and his teeth are a little bit long and sharp. The book isn't scary at all and the boy meets the dragon in the begining of the book. The book is pretty cool. You should read it it's good. The three main characters are Mag, Sir Ector, and Artos. What I liked about this book was that they're is a dragon in it and a red diamond, and what I didn't like about this book was that all they did was talk about Mag, and Artos. The author is a very good writer. This book was very good you should read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This doth be an exceedingly good book!
Howard Pyle delivers yet another splendid book which recaptures the enchantment and chivalry of the legend of Kind Arthur and his knights. Some have complained of the archaic english, but I love it.It only adds to the magic of Pyle's story. This book is filled with the adventures of noble knights, and it does an amazing job of keeping your interest.Somehow, even after many previous jousts and sword matches, Pyle makes each one more interesting than the last.

While this book is intended for kids, adults will probably appreciate it as well...I know I did.If you've tried to wade through Mallory's Le Mort d'Arthur recently, you might agree that it can be relatively slow going and tedious reading at times.Pyle's version of the tales are excellent, and can be read much more easily (and in my opinion with more entertainment) than Mallory's book.I'd recommend this to anyone, young or old, who likes adventure stories and wants to start or continue learning about the Arthurian legends.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the version worth waiting for . . .
Although Howard Pyle was born in Delaware, he is best known as purveyor of myth and legend to several generation of British and American children -- and their parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids should read this - a 8 year olds review
I think all kids 7 and up should read this book because it is a real history book. And they should read it because everybody should get a turn reading stuff they haven't read before.I would describe this book as a moral for listening to other people. This book was really sad because all the kings and queens died.I think there should never be wars.It was a really exciting book because I got to learn something.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good reading
My daughter and I who were not entirely familiar with the legend of King Arthur, enjoyed this book very much.Although it is a quick overview of Arthur's exploits as well as the adventures of the knights of the round table, it is nontheless captivating.Easy to read and nicely illustrated.

1-0 out of 5 stars King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (Little Golde
Being that this is a Little Golden Book and the reading level was listed as 4-8, I assumed that this book would be appropriate for my seven-year-old nephew. However, this book is clearly designed for an older child, both in themes and reading level. Now, I am out my shipping money, and I doubt I'll be ordering from Amazon anytime soon. ... Editorial Review

Anne McCaffrey is back with this precious, well-researched yarn that follows a Celtic lad in service to King Arthur. Set in fifth-century Britain, McCaffrey's first historical novel for young adults rejects a fantastical, Hollywood treatment of King Arthur in favor of realism and solid storytelling. Take away the Round Table and the usual knights-in-shining-armor hoo-hah, and you're left with an engaging, endearing chapter from the life of Artos, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arthurian Lore
I collect every book I can find about Arthur and his universe.McCaffrey's book fits excellently into the collection. Although perhaps written for young adults, any reader will find this book will written, exciting and solid.McCaffrey's writing style, as always, carries the reader through the book in magnificent style.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fresh look at an oft-told tale
As a parent and soon-to-be teacher, I'm always on the lookout for books that are unique. Something that may take a new spin on an old tale, or may present my kids with a story that they might not have known before.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good young adult novel, nothing more
Good young adult novel, which I am giving to my elder kidlet (age 9) to read now. He'll enjoy the mixture of horses and King Arthur, I think. Probably the only McCaffrey I ever intend to voluntarily give him. If he finds the rest of those books, he'll do it of his own accord. No sense making him read sci-fi slop if he can avoid it. 4 stars of 5, as a kid's book.If I rated it for adults, 2 stars of 5. ... Read more

Hi. I am a 6th grader. I am writing a review on Amizon.com about the book Arthur: The Seeing Stone by Kevin Crossley-Holland, one of the major legends of the world. I think the book was a very interesting book. I would give the book a 9 out of 10 because of the books interesting vocabulary and the imagination contained in it. The book starts with King Arthur when he was 13 and the adventures of hunting and yard-skills and whatever Arthur becomes and faces. The story starts in the Manor of Caldicot where Arthur lives. The book is a good book for ages around 7 or higher because of a little violence. I hope people will read this book because this book will open the readers mind into a powerful joyful imagination and they will visualize a wonderful world of fantasy and adventure. That is my review on my book.

Arthur-in-the-seeing-stone steps up to the anvil and pulls out the sword. He is the trueborn king of all Britain. To find out what happens next, read this exciting fantasy, about a boy in search of his quest. Arthur is a regular thirteen year old boy in his time, around the 12th century. He is learning to read and write, and is very good at it, but his true passion is to become a squire and then a knight. He must learn to master the skill of swordplay and jousting to do so, but his best talent is archery. His good friend Merlin is very strange, and Arthur believes he can do some magic. Merlin gives Arthur a gift, an obsidian stone. Also known as the seeing stone. Arthur sees images in the stone and people that resemble his brother and father. In the stone, the story that takes place is many, many ages before Arthur's time, and there is a king, King Uther. He and Queen Ygerna have a baby boy, thirteen years ago, but no one knows who it is. King Uther must give his baby to a hooded magical man, who later turns out to be Merlin. The boy is reaised by foster parents until he is needed to take the throne. Later, King Uther is poisened by Britain's enemies, the Saracens. King Uther asks the archbishop to find his son and have him claim the throne. The hooded man sticks a sword into an anvil and puts a charm on it so that the next king is the one that is able to pull out the sword. Many knights, earls, and lords attempt this difficult task but all fail. Then Arthur tries it, and is successful. No one can believe that this thirteen year old is the new king because he is still a boy. His father, well really foster father, tells him about his real father, the king. This is very similar to real Arthur's life. His uncle is really his father. His real father is a mean, rude man, and also a murderer. He hates this because it also means he cannot marry Grace, his half-sister that he used to think was his cousin. Arthur is very happy though because Lord Stephen requested him as his squire and to join him and take the cross back from the Saracens in Jeruseleum. This book is very good because it is very interesting and makes you think about it alot. It was a little bit confusing though because so much was going on in basically two different worlds. But this book is deffinetly worth it.
