5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I needed to order this book for a class. It is well written and easy to read. As a reading teacher I can say that I will keep this book as a reference long after the class has ended. This edition comes with a CD (or DVD) which I have not previewed yet, but the instructor of my class raves about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best reading methods textbook I've found
I teach a course in elementary reading methods for undergraduate education students. This is the third textbook I've tried, and it is excellent! It has what students need to know about the theory and practice of teaching reading, written in a very readable, non-overwhelming way.Plus it has lots of practical teaching ideas. Our lab school saw it and ordered several copies for its teachers also.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!!
I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!!You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I absolutely love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
My son just finished the Kindergarten program which we broke into approximately 15 lessons (each lesson ranging from 30 - 60 minutes) over a couple of months (it can certainly be accomplished quicker). The CD leads you through the workbook and provides all of the phonetics to assist you and your child. The lessons in the beginning took longer than the book describes but once my son got the hang of it the lessons went quicker. The flash cards with helper words are a fun game to interact with your child. The short stories and books were enjoyable for my son and helped him feel a sense of accomplishment when he earned a sticker on the progress chart. My son used the computer game on his own and it reinforced the concepts we worked on together during the lessons. This program helped introduce him to reading, sounds, comprehending the story, and he was more confident when reading and when sight words were introduced in his Kindergarten class. We both are looking forward to the 1st grade level product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent program and a great value
We got this program after trying Teach Your Child To Read in 100 EZ Lessons and found that Hooked on Phonics Kindergarten was a much better program for our daughter.Hooked on Phonics K comes with a workbook, several audio CD's, MANY easy reader books, flashcards, and a computer CD.It also comes with a sticker chart where the child can track each new book that they read.

5-0 out of 5 stars practical qnd classroom friendly
This book is a wonderful resource book for any Language Arts teacher. The key to successfully using it is to find out what the child needs to learn to do to become a better reader. Then Mrs. Beers has listed what to do, and even shows how it has worked with real students.I know the activities could be used with first graders and on up.I taught Reading Recovery for ten years and have studied struggling readers for forty years, and I know these resources will work.I also like the authors she used to gather her research. She didn't just research through books, but also practiced these herself.Mrs. Beers has included places for busy teachers to go easily to find the materials to use.All Language Arts teachers shoud use this book.

Finally, I was required to a buy a book that I will actually use again. Both pre-student and veteren teachers will enjoy this book.It contains a wealth of strategies for teaching kids how to write. Each section is clearly explained so it's great to just pick and choosewhat you are looking for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray for correct punctuation!
As a teacher and mother of 7-year-old twins, I found this book right on target!I have a daily calendar of "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" quips, and the girls are happy to be able to get an age-specific taste of why Mommy is a punctuation stickler. They have read through the book several times, and they have each taken time to show me their favorite pages, explaining to me why the comma made such a difference.
2-0 out of 5 stars Parents/grammar lovers should expect more
I had fun reading this book with my kids. Many of the examples were well chosen, and the pictures were always fun, and sometimes pretty clever. (Can you guess how they illustrated I've finally decided to cheer up, everybody!? I couldn't have.) But as an educational experience, the book ranges from unhelpful to misleading or false. The grammar lovers/parents that it targets should expect more.

This is a very helpful book for ESL Kindergarteners!I have all the Words Their Way books and have used them at every grade level in my elementary school.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for K-2 teachers.
Like the other Words their Way materials, this volume continues the wonderful tradition of combining excellent teaching ideas with theblack line masters so you can use the strategies immediately. This level is especially appropriate for students learning letter/sound relationships. It gives dozens of poems and stories which have sorts to support teaching them. There are old faithfuls such as "It's raining, it's pouring" to new poems that teach phonemic awareness, rhyming, visual discrimination and sight words. My favorite is the alphabet printed in several different fonts so students can learn all the ways 'A' might look. I wish I had this 21 years ago when I started teaching.I use it daily now. ... Although WRITING MAGIC is geared towards young adults, this is the perfect helper for anyone who has ever wanted to write a book.Creating stories is hard work.It takes practice, discipline, and dedication. It would be nice to think that writing a book simply means sitting down and typing up words, but, alas, it really doesn't work that way.Thankfully, though, we have Gail Carson Levine, Newbery Honor author of some of my favorite books (ELLA ENCHANTED, THE TWO PRINCESSES OF BAMARRE, and the upcoming FAIREST, to name a few) who has taken the time to put together

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and easily understandable
The geniuses that controlled my education decided that I should skip fourth grade reading because they caught me reading Mark Twain in third grade. I can't imagine what in the WORLD they were thinking, as I came to learn years later that in fourth grade reading they taught - you guessed it - grammar! And boy, did I suffer. My written grammar was absolutely horrendous for years, and even though I continued to be placed in advanced or honors English classes throughout high school, whenever my papers were returned to me the "concept" side came back with an A, and the "grammar" side came back with a D or an F.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to SA Spellers
This book is a great guide to teaching word study to SA learners. The reading is more simplistic and easier to understand than Words Their Way while offering appropriate sorts for this stage. It gives a more in depth view of SA spellers with an excellent sequence of instruction. It's only downfall is that many of the sorts are a little too complicated or have too many headers. It also only offers one sort for each part of a stage, even though some students may need to work within a sort for more than a week.Regardless of these negative aspects, I have really enjoyed this book and it is a great resource for any teacher's or school's library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Give your child a secret weapon for reading
I used this program with my child who was having trouble keeping up with reading in his class at school so I purchased this program.I worked with him 15 minutes before school each morning and within 2 weeks there was a noticeable improvement in his reading abilities. The progress charts gave him a visual goal for him to see that he was learning and succeeding! It was a huge ego boost for him to put a sticker on the chart to show that he'd passed a section.I can't say enough good about this program.Even if your child is having trouble reading, or is a good reader but could use some work in efficiency, this is the program for you.We completed this program in 2 months, it's up to the user to determine how motivated they are to push through the levels. The easy color coded levels guide you step by step through workbooks and tapes, defining and mastering sounds and rhythems of reading.Being able to work at home and find what his problems areas were took the fear of embarrassment infront of kids in the class out of the picture. The books for reading were interesting and had very cute animals and modern pictures that kids this age would relate to.I'm so happy with this program, I'm moving on with Hooked On Phonics Master Reader.I only wish I'd done this program with all my children.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I ordered the newly revised Deluxe version of HOP so that I could help my kindergartener learn to read. I'm so disappointed that it doesn't use creative teaching methods. Frankly, it's very, very dry and boring.I expected songs, no songs. I expected interactive CDs, there is one in the entire k-2nd grade kit! Provides nice "learn to read" books,a workbook, and a couple of very boring audio CDs.Unfortunately, to access the instructions for each workbook session, one must turn on the audio CD, find the place you last stopped, then listen to the monotone lesson. They are so dull, my daughter tunes right out but there's no other way to get the lesson instructions. The positive side, at least it gives ME a frame of referenceto teach my daughter - but such a wasted opportunity for HOPs to teach! There are many inexpensive CD-ROMs on the market that are more effective. ... Editorial Review

It's meant for high schoolers, but adults who haven't inhaled chalk dust for years might appreciate it even more. The process of organizing, researching and writing a paper is laid is out in easy-to-understand normal-speak. The chapters on grammar and usage are very user-friendly, and lots of extras (suffixes, parliamentary procedure, periodic table, metric system, the U.S. Constitution, world maps, etc.) make this an extraordinarily popular and useful household item. If you're feeling generous, you might even let the kid take it to school on occasion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for All Students
When my daughter entered high school, her English teacher recommended this book and informed the parents that it would become the "bible" for writing papers. How correct she was!!! This book was used extensively by my daughter in high school. Now that she is away at college and took it with her, I purchased another one for my son.I believe it is the most used book in our house, besides the dictionary. No one can write a paper correctly without owning this resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mosaic of Thought : Teaching Comprehension in a Reader's Workshop
This is an excellent reference for teaching comprehension strategies in the elementary classroom. As a teacher, I refer to this book often. The authors have presented a straight forward guide explanining the importance and logic of their teaching methods. I have used these techniques in my own classroom. I have seen definite improvement in my sudents' comprehension. These improvements have been apparent in boh informal assessments as well as formal evaluations. I would definitely recommend this book to other teachers and homeschooling parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the progressive teacher
As an educator, I try to look for teacher's literature that goes beyond the worksheets and attempts to get at the belief system and structure of what is considered "best practices" in education. This book challenges teachers to delve/question their belief systems, practices and own schema to help better understand how our students think and eventually teaching them a new and deeper way of looking at literature.
2-0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?
I read this during my master's program. It is alot of wasted text. I wish it had listed the strategies, attached appendices and not had so much additional mumbo jumbo. This is awesome for discussions on comprehension, but useless as a day to day guide. I will keep my Atwell and Fountas books on hand instead. ... Read more

This was one of my favorite books as a child. It's great for beginning readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Version is abridged
This is a great book BUT the current edition is badly edited from the original - I was very disappointed to find that the birds and the types of houses and many other pages are not in the new version. Anybody have an original copy they would like to sell?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Word Book Ever!
I got this book as a gift for my son when he was 1 year old.He didn't read it until he was about 18 months. Now he is 3 years old and loves this book.It talks about getting up in the morning, washing face, hands, making the bed, changing clothes, going to eat breakfast, etc. It also talks about the Supermarket, school, at the beach, camping, etc.It is a great book.My son really enjoys it.He remembers Kenny Bear and tries to be like him.I recently bought this book as a gift for a friend. I would give this book to others as well.I highly recommend it! ... Read more
