4-0 out of 5 stars A good collection but a few "Greats" are missing
I realize that making the choices as to who and what should go into a collection like this - is very hard. I think this is a great book but I guess that I would not be able to limit the title to "One hundred and One." Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars MOTIVATOR
1957-discharged from the army.No longer a callow youth but lacking motivation, I gave university life a whirl.I bought the book on a whim and I still have it by my bedside. It's a delightful collection that early on helped provide the sparkI needed to continue my education.I discovered I knew little of the world.Who the heck was Wolsey? The Spires of Oxford, the Boar War?Where is the encyclopedia?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of most topics
I found several parts of this book exceptional, meaning much better than the average grammar book. The coverage of first person, second person, and third person writing in both singular and plural forms was well-done, including a later section on first, second, and third person pronouns. There are also excellent sections on object of preposition and object complement (yeah, I didn't know what that was either). The sections on pronouns are extremely complete and go on for pages--I didn't realize how many pronouns and types of pronouns there were.Verb tenses is also covered very thoroughly with many examples of present, past, future, present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect.Prepositions are covered very thoroughly, including explanations for when they're used (to tell location, direction, time, relationship, etc.) and then a list of prepositions.
4-0 out of 5 stars I needed this book
This book it is a great help when I am not sure how to guide my kid...very good just followed the rules in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help....
Since my original language is German it was a great help to have this book now that my daughter is a student in an American school. Although I understand the basics of English grammar this book showed me steps on how to teach my daughter English grammar without making it too complicated. It also helped me refresh my grammar. I have also recommended this book to my daughters 1st Grade teacher as an ideal companion for any parent whose kids are starting to write stories of their own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for infants!
I'm an occupational therapist and I absolutely loved using this book with my daughter. We used it from the age of 6 months to 17 months, when my daughter started to use more verbal language.I've read the other reviews and they state that the book is BSL, which I didn't even realize (not being a speech language pathologist, I'm not exposed to sign language as much). The book was great for what I think it's intended to be.It seems to be appropriate for infants to toddlers that are learning sign language as a precursor to verbal language. The children that would benefit from it won't communicate with other people who use standard ASL and won't use sign language as their main form of communication. My daughter learned approximately 20-25 signs to communicate to me things that she wanted and it cut down on a lot of frustration.I also noticed that if the word that she wanted to communicate wasn't in the book or wasn't something that I taught her, she would make up a sign...she even made up a sign for The Wiggles. This book is great for an infant/toddler because the pages are cardboard (they won't tear), the pictures are age appropriate for a baby, and it's easy to understand.I've seen several baby sign language books and none were appropriate to sit down and look at with a baby. This book was actually the first book that my daughter wanted to "read" before she went to bed, because she could "read" it.Again, a wonderful book for a infant/toddler who isn't going to use sign language as their main form of communication. My daughter is now 20 months old and has been talking for awhile and I really contribute it to her use of sign language prior to verbal language.Even if there's not a word that your baby wants to communicate in the book, just make it up.You're the only one that is probably going to use it with them...they won't be using the signs for long anyhow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Important signs are missing.
What I like - This book is easy to understand.Large pictures and easy to understand illustrations are great.
2-0 out of 5 stars British Sign Language vs. American Sign Language
My children and I love the illustrations and size of this big board book, but were disappointed upon receiving it and noting the signs were based on BSL (British Sign Lanugage) not ASL (American Sign Language).Although many signs were similar, there were also quite a few that were different. We're in close contact w/many deaf friends, so its not acceptable for us to learn BSL, when we're trying to learn ASL.I wish that I had known in advance regarding the translation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for older kids and adults
I really enjoyed the details in this book about from where poetry stems.I loved the idea of just watching the wolrd around you and seeing if a poem somes to you. It does!My only concern is the book uses language that would be too difficult for the average 5th-6th grader to understand.I like that poems from kids are included, but this book seems more appropriate for a teacher to reach and intergrate into his/her curriculum.

1-0 out of 5 stars A book for beginners
Here's what I didn't like: the personal approach to poetry writting, using as examples personal anecdotes at the beginning of some chapters; the use of bad poems written by students instead of poems written by great poets; the superficial approach to poetry writting.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Great Book for learning how to write poetry!
Hi, I really enjoyed reading Ralph Fletcher's book "Poetry Matters: Writing a Poem from the inside out." He gives lots of good examples. He has interviews with two other poets in the book for ideas on poetry. He makes poetry interesting and fun to learn! I also enjoyed his poetry! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good & Easy Lists of Grade-Level Vocabulary
I refer daily to this book in my job as a writer of curriculum materials for children. It boosts my confidence that I am using appropriate grade-level diction. Besides general P-13 word lists, there are also subject-specific lists for math, science and social studies -- also by grade level.

4-0 out of 5 stars EDL Cor Vocabularies
This is a collection of word lists, alphabetically arranged. It's sources are the textbooks used in grades pre-primary through grade 13. The words are listed by grade level, and then combined in a cumulative list. In the cumulative list, the year in which each word was introduced is given next to the word. Also included are mathematics, science and social studies word lists for grades 1 through 6, as well as a aural comprehension list for adults with low reading skills. No thesaurus is included. This book is most valuable to anyone writing for a target audience of grade school children. It answers the question,"Can I expect a reader in this particular grade to comprehend this particular word?" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND IN READING!
If your child can play a Gameboy or play games on the computer, they'll certainly breeze through this Hooked on Phonics: Master Reader program.I completed the original Hooked on Phonics levels 1-5 and needed more advanced reading training for my [...] son who struggles with large words, compound words, and most importantly, confidence within himself. This program is the answer for us!Although first looking at this program, I hesitated purchasing it because of the price, after trying other methods, I broke down and bought this program.Yes, it's an investment, but it's an investment with HUGE REWARDS, you won't mind the cost when you see your child making such quick headway with this product.Within 1 minute of opening the box, I slipped the CD in as instructed, clicked a few yeses and nexts to install,my son then sat down at the computer and completed level one.I was thrilled that there was plenty of overlap from the beginner program of basic reading as not to scare him off right off the bat.The graphics were bright, interesting to him, and completely user friendly to him.Looking at him, you'd have thought he was playing a cool video game!I sat next to him ready to help him, but the instructions were very clear and understandable for him, he didn't need me to help out. This is a completely independent program for your child to operate! This is what I notice most about this CD-ROM version is the freedom it allows the parents of struggling readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tool to empower students and teachers alike
I am not a neutral reviewer. I am Lawrence Baines' brother.I am also not a teacher, though education has long been an intense passion of mine. For ten years now I have been a memberand officer of SEAL (Society forEffective and Affective Learning).I have always admiredLawrence's manycreative pursuits in music and art, and have long wondered just why he haddecided to lend his great passion and enthusiasm to traditional education. The answer is thatthe field of education in whichheworks is a longway from traditional education. He is a revolutionary who continually seeksto bring that, perhaps, childish delight and joyof learning back into theclassroom. Going Bohemian is a delightful collaboration ofa group of very competent and passionatepeople who are all committed to empoweringeducation and to making it more efficient, effective and fun for allconcerned. There is no dry education theory in this book. It is acollection of very compelling ideas to fire and hold the attentionof student and teacher alike. As I read it, I got excited as I turned pageafter page which I could vividly see transforming the boring thing which Ihave long considered traditional education to be. You can't go wrong. I too ordered the book expecting it to be the regular addition. When I received the 'Enhanced Edition' I returned it for the regular addition, however they sent me the 'Enhanced Edition' again. This is not mentioned in their description, therefore they are falsely advertising this book as a regular edition.Buyer Beware!

I have used this vocab workshop series for years and it is great. One caution however is that there is an "enhanced edition" and a regular edition. My teacher wants us to use the regular edition so I have to search elsewhere as Amazon only carried the 'enhanced' and made no mention of the various editions in their description. I already wrote in the wrong version so am out $10.00. I also had trouble matching ISBN numbers on Amazon.
