4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly detailed book for early elementary children.
I have this book in my preschool classroom, but it is not one that I read at storytime. We use it as a resource when one child begins to question how or why the leaves change color. It is a helpful resource for me as an adult to understand the process, yet in simple language and with pictures to make it interesting for children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Science Made Fun & Easy
I have a 6-yr old boy and a 7-yr old girl. It's very rare to find anything that they agree on but with What Is the World Made Of? I was able to find a book that both of them would enjoy and learn from at the same time. The easy-to-follow language made it easy for them both to follow along. The fun pictures and odd bits of humor kept them interested and wanting to know more. A fantastic find & one I hope to be able to use for quite some time.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun
I liked this book for my kids as I tend to like educational stuff. There is another book on amazon that I and my kids loved, because it was not only educational but super funny. It is DR JONES AND CAROLYN by carolyn apel5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to the Solar System...
I purchased this book for my five year old son, who loves anything that has to do do with outerspace and the planets. This is a terrific book for a young child, the information is direct and to the point and easy to understand.I think children in the older recommended age range would be somewhat dissappointed, it is not really meant for in depth understanding.5-0 out of 5 stars Out Of This Place

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and Fun
My 3 year old daughter loves it.It explains the process at a level she can understand.Great when used with the Butterfly Garden.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Butterfly Book for Preschool-Third Grade
I am the director of a lower school (pre-k-2nd) and we have used this book for years. It is the perfect way to introduce children to the wonderful world of metamorphosis. And if you can also actually get the Painted Lady Butterflies and "grow" them in your class, it is an invaluable experience. We have our children keep journals and then buy them each a copy of this great book (it's cheap in paperback) and they get to keep the experience forever. One correction to another review: painted ladies and all butterflies do spin chrysalids, not cocoons. They look similar, but the chrysalis usually has little specks of gold in it, which is where the name comes from. Yes I am a huge fan of this book--and a huge fan of butterflies. This author also has a lovely book about honeybees, called Honeybees.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book to accompany Butterfly Houses, Pavillions
We got this book in addition to a home "Butterfly Pavillion" by InsectLore. It prepared my son and us for what to expect as the Painted Lady Butterflies were developing through each stage. So even duringthe lulls in the action, we could spark some anticipation. Which heightened the whole process for my 5 year old. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward, engaging introduction to the 5 senses
My 5 year old son absolutely adores this book.He asks me to read it repeatedly, and has fun pointing out when he's using his senses just like the (adorably illustrated) child in Aliki's book does. It's a lively, fun introduction to an important scientific concept.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be confused with Aliki's "My Five Senses"
Margaret Miller's book is a simple introduction to the five senses which young children can easily understand and relate to. I use it in teaching the concept of the five sensesto my English as a Second Language kindergarten students. Miller presents each sense with the related body parts, which makes it easier for children to understand the sometimes complicated idea of what a "sense" is.For example, "With my eyes, I see..." and then she gives examples. The book is illustrated with Miller's photos of children of different ethnicities, and the items they are seeing, smelling, etc are relevant to most children's experience. My students used this book as a starting point to make their own books about the five senses. As a teacher, I recommend this book to anyone looking for a way to introduce some science content to little ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Five Senses
Appealing pictures accompany a straight forward text. "Sometimes I use all my senses at once...When I laugh and play with my puppy, I use four senses. I see, hear, smell and touch...each sense is very important to me because it makes me aware. To be aware is to see all there is to see...hear all there is to hear...[etc]." I like the progression from simple statements to more complex ideas, especially the use of the word 'aware'.How many early readers are aware of the word 'aware' and connect it to their senses? After reading this book, they all will! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent nonfiction
This is a very readable children's book about bats.It helps to dispel some of those nasty myths about our only flying mammal that seem to persist.I use this book as part of my unit on bats that I teach in my second grade classroom.A twin text that I also use is Stellaluna.Pairing fiction and nonfiction works very well with young children.Zipping... is very informative and a very good resource for exposing children to needed symbiosis of man and nature.I will be building a bat house with ny students as a follow up.Think about this book the next time you find yourself swatting at a pesky mosquito.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Book
Have you ever wanted to learn about bats?Well, I did.So after readingAnne Earle's fabulous book, Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats, I learned that bats are innocuous, useful and interesting mammals.Let me tell you what I have assimilated.5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, fun and educational
I love this book and so do my 5 year old son and 7 year old daughter. It is filled with great pictures of bats and all kinds of bat facts. It lets you know that bats are nothing to fear and even shows you how to make a bat house in the back of the book.Did you know that bats are the only flying animals that nurse their young?Bat "pups" hang together in large groups called nurseries and each mother returns at least twice during the night to feed her little pup.Did you know that there is a bat in Australia that has a six foot wing span?I didn't until I read this book...don't worry they eat fruit!I liked bats before...now I like them even more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My five year old enjoyed this book
We enjoy the "Let's - Read - & - Find - Out" series of books. This one is a good addition, explaining seeds on my five year old son's level of understanding . Something that many adult writers of childrens' science books sometimes aren't very good at getting across. It is in my child's library at school. 4-0 out of 5 stars Life Springing Forth.
This book should have been more appropriately titled HOW TO WATCH A SEED GROW. Instead of discussing the various stages of development and explaining what happens, the book is basically an extended science project explaining how students can watch a seed grow into a plant. The book talks about the different stages, but only discusses what the planted beans should look like in those stages, not really explaining what is happening or why. Nevertheless, the book does outline a good science project for younger children, but isn't much as a book to read to kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Kids First Science Book
This is one very good science book.If you would like to do a seed project then this is a good guide to lots of young peoples questions about plants. It has colorful illustrations about what is happening with yourproject. It is written in detail, but not like a boring high schoolscience textbook that goes on, and on, and on about one thing, giving everydetail that there is.So what I'm trying to sayis that this is a goodbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars When my kids were sick, this was one of two books we always read...
My children, now 19 and 17, loved this book.I guess they were about 6 and 4 when I got it.Whenever they were sick, we read this book and a Sesame Street book called "It's No Fun to be Sick."Reading these books became a comforting ritual, as well as an easy way to learn some basic science.

3-0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity to teach about hygiene
Although this book is thorough in describing the differences between viruses and bacteria, I think it misses an important opportunity to reinforce hygiene...wash your hands, cover your mouth etc. These are given a cursory review on the last page, with no accompanying illustration.I had hoped that this book would help my almost-4-year-old to understand how people get sick, how they get well, and how they can help prevent communicable disease to reinforce what I teach at home.I do not think that the authors did a very good job of meeting those expectations.

4-0 out of 5 stars An untimidating, practical account of germs for young reader
My three-year old son really enjoys this book. The book's fairly simple, yet informative account of how viruses and bacteria can make us sick helps to make the abstract concept of germs more concrete for him.As an addedbonus, the book gives a plug for handwashing, covering mouths when sneezingor coughing, and not sharing cups that most preschoolers can benefit from. I must also confess that, despite having read the Times Science section foryears, I learned quite a bit about viruses and bacteria from this simple,well-illustrated book.A good buy, especially for parents who field a lotof factual queries every day.The Let's Read and Find Out series is agreat way to let someone else do the explaining for a change. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science book series is great for kids
The Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science book series is great. It is the right amount of information and the right level for young readers. My first grader read 200 books last school year and it was nice to know she was learning about her world at the same time. She read this and other books from the series to my four year old who also retained much of the information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hear Your Heart
This book has captivated my 4 1/2 year old son.(My 8 year old daughter likes it, too)My son actually stood up in preschool yesterday (he is normally quiet) and taught the class details of how the heart works and the parts of the heart. His teacher's were amazed that he was sharing something, so they let him teach. We have to read this book over and over again.
