5-0 out of 5 stars Immigrant empathy
Eve Bunting portrays a warm look at the plight of one immigrant girl transitioning to an American classroom for the very first time.I read this book with second graders yesterday (who have a brand new student from Norway in their midst) and I think all of them felt compassion for their friend's situation. The illustrations are amazing and Ted Lewin has used his wife Betsy to portray the role of the teacher. This is truly a book that should not be missed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A REVIEW OF THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD
I think that how Ralph Helfer made this story become so true and so realistic to the readers mind really touched me it is one of the best books i have ever read and ever will read. You cant read this book with out a box of tissues near bye because I cried my eyes out through out the whole book. I can really relate to this book because currently my pony is for sale and i am going to keep track of him forever and hopefully who ever buys him will sell him back to me for my baby cousin who is too young for him now but will be a perfect match as she gets older. Ralph Helfer gets a standing applause for his book Modoc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The secret of the indian{bookreview}
Did you ever read a book with little action figures brought to life by a magic cupboard? Well if you like books with a lot of action, excitement and danger, a book called The Secret of the Indian is a good book for you. The main idea of this book review is to recommend this book under my opinion. This review is mainly about the end of a book called The Return Of The Indian and the book after that one in the series. It is called The Secret of the Indian. In this story, two main characters, Omri and Patrick, are faced with gangsters who are trying to rob Omri's house. Omri and Patrick chase off the skinheads, but have another problem, how they are going to explain to Omri's burn. A few weeks later, Patrick is trying to tell himself that every thing that happened with the magic cupboard was not real. So after Omri convinces Patrick that ever happened with the magic cupboard was real, both boys steal one of Patrick's cousin's dolls to heal Omri's plastic Indian, Little Bear. After they bring the doll to life and find out the doll's name is Matron, Matron heals Little Bear. Later, Patrick goes back to the time of his toy cowboy, Boone. When he comes back he brings some one back, Ruby Lou. The rest you have to find out yourself by reading the book. In my opinion, the last book in the series, The Secret Of The Indian, is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for any age read aloud!
My students love hearing this book.It is different to see a picture that is a happy/sappy tale. They really get into this book asking a ton of questions throughout the story. It is a great book to use in the classroom as it ties in with many subjects!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking
I teach Grade 5 children and the unit of work we were studying was "World Peace". We had read "Sadako" and talked a lot about WWII - then this book was recommended to me. My students sat enthralled as I read it.(I had forewarned them that it was very sad) It produced lots of great discussion and helped re-inforce the impact that war has on people and societies. An excellent book for older students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faithful Elephants
This is brilliant book with beautiful illustrations. I recommend this book to those teachers that are serious about teaching reading and helping children construct meaning for themselves. When I first read this book the child totally enjoyed the story, even though our eyes were filled with water. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very sweet book
This is a very sweet book. This multicultural book welcomes the reader into Ahmed's life through the first person point of view. The illustrations are a wanderful compliment to the words. The reader meets the city in which Ahmed lives, the people who surround him, and his family values which are easily related to children's lives. I read with anticipation wandering what the secret could be. I closed this book with a smile on my face.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Children's Book and reminder for those of us who have lived in Egypt
This book is well written and illustrated and will always be a constant reminder of my days living and working in Egypt.I have gladly shared this book with many of my friends and colleagues and will continue to do so.Proud to add it to my collection of memorabilia of my life in Egypt.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Real Child
I came across this book at the Dearborn Arab-American Festival, the largest Arab festival in North America. And I'm so glad I did. Vivid illustrations, and an engrossing storyline. Heide reveals a very realistic Cairo street life, unknown to most Western adults, and here very easy for kids to relate to through the eyes of the young child, Ahmed. I smiled as I read and saw different scenes, like the rose-water man, and remembered walking through Cairo and seeing these very people. The scenes are gritty- not white-washed, yet also very relationally connected, with people caring for each other and showing true hospitality, the hallmark of Egyptian life. This child isn't a terrorist; it's a young child; it's real life. When he finally reveals his secret, it's the joy of a child first learning to read, just like any Western or American child. But he's also truly Egyptian- he presents his name in Arabic.

4-0 out of 5 stars You are the light of the world
There's a whole genre of picture books that examine the working class members of American society throughout history. These stories are usually based on the lives of the relatives and ancestors of the authors."Peppe the Lamplighter" is no exception.Loosely based on the grandfather of author Elisa Bartone, the book examines one boy's occupation and his struggle be accepted in the eyes of his father.
5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old son loves it
I purchased this book for my husband for Father's Day (he's Italian American")--I didn't really think that our then 2.5 year old would really care for the book. But he loves it!It's a good story, although at times the messages can be a bit confusing for a very young child--but my son seems to enjoys the illustrations, the sounds of the Italian names, and of course the most elemental aspects of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning artwork makes this book special
"Peppe the Lamplighter" combines a story by Elisa Bartone with illustrations by Ted Lewin. The story takes place "[a] long time ago when there was no electricity and the street lamps in Little Italy had to be lit by hand." The hero of the book is Peppe, who lives with his widowed father and sisters in a tenement. Peppe's decision to get a job as a lamplighter leads to conflict between Peppe and his father.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this book
This book is not historically accurate.Italian immigrant children, like most immigrants children, wanted to be true Americans, but they were not rude as the main character in this book is portrayed. The book makes a mockery of the traditions of many immigrants in order to make a politically correct point. The only thing that is probably historically accurate in this book is that the main character wore a costume in a procession. If you are looking for a book about children of Italian immigrants that is accurate try "Peppe" by this same author. It's interesting that she portrays the boy Peppe accurately, but the girl in "American Too" as a feminist.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
Really, a terrible book. The text shows Rosie to be a selfish, rebellious brat who yells at her father and only cares about being American. She doesn't care a thing about the Italian culture. There's a stupid bit of love interest in the form of a boy named Jimmy, who gawks at Rosie and asks her to dance in the end. Of course, after shunning him for so long, she accepts the dance.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary testimony to archaeological history
Accessibly written and very beautifully by Caldecott Honor Winner Ted Lewin, Lost City: The Discovery Of Machu Picchu is a picturebook history presentation about a 1911 journey into Peru in search of Vilcapampa, the lost city of the Incas. What was actually discovered was the forgotten city of Machu Picchu, resulting in an extraordinary testimony to archaeological history and a Native American legacy, in this wonderfully illustrated, deftly told, and strongly recommended story. ... This story was enchanting. The illustrator's illuminating pictures really helped bring this story to life. The descriptive language in this story made it easy to imagine that you(the reader)are right there climbing the towering peaks. The fact that this is a true story makes it that much more enjoyable to read. Until reading this book I was not familiar with this author or illustrator, but now that I am I will be looking for more of their work, it is great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! A picture book on evolution!
An earlier reviewer was right on target when s/he said "I wish there was a whole series like this one!"This is an extremely difficult subject to find in a format that is accessible to young children.Though we read it to our son when he was 4, some of the text was difficult but at least it was an introduction to a very difficult topic that is so abstract that it's not easily accessible to young children. It continues to be great as a picture book on the topic as children enter early elementary. Most topics can be introduced to even young children, who are naturally fascinated by their world, as long as it is done in a pleasing picture format. But note, the language can still be complex; you may have to edit depending on the child's age and attention span and vocabulary level but it gives you pictures that you can use as a springboard to discuss the fascinating topic of evolution. So there should really be more of these books covering various science topics. As an adult, even I was interested in the ancestors to modern whales.(As an adjunct to the book, there is a computer graphics mini-video at the Smithsonian in Washington DC that animates the evolution of whales from land animals to sea mammals. Seeing the movie first and having this book afterwards was an amazing learning experience.)

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish there was a whole series like this one
This is a simple book which feels more like a storybook than a science book. This suits it very well to the age group it is aiming at. It is a gentle look at evolution, but because it is focused on only one animal, it can give more detail than a general book on evolution of this size. I really wish they had a series of these, each focusing on a different animal. I also liked the artwork and felt it fit well with the tone of the writing. Overall this was a hit in our family, and I often recommend it to others who are looking for evolution books for the preschool set. There are so few books for youngsters about evolution; it is a real shame. Most of us who want to expose our children to this from early on are pretty much stuck using everything that is available, whether it is particularly well done or not. This is a book I would use even if there were an abundance of books to choose from. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "No matter how you say it...buying, selling, trading, and bargaining is a language we all understand."
All around the world, people buy and sell goods in markets. Ted Lewin introduces readers to six unique markets in such diverse places as Madras (India) and Lambertville (New Jersey). In Thailand, selling and buying takes place aboard long thin boats, where people buy fruits with such lyrical names as pomelo and rambutan. Some vendors even cook food right on their boats! Other highlights include a market high up in the Peruvian Andes and a camel market outside of Cairo. Lewin's watercolors have soft edges and very bright colors. The detailed pictures convey the bustling excitement of a market full of interesting goods. Consider pairing this book with Lois Ehlert's Market Day or with any of Norah Dooley's Everybody books (Everybody Cooks Rice / Brings Noodles / Bakes Bread / Serves Soup) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story for children about Saint Francis
This is a good story for children about St. Francis. 3 or 4 year olds would enjoy having it read to them while 3rd graders will enjoy being able to read it for themselves. While it talks a little bit about who St. Francis is in general. While pointing out that it was while he was sick that he seemed to go through an experience of conversion (though it is put on a child's level of understanding) it does not mention anything about the wars involved. While it tells about the father asking for everything back, there is no picture or mention about his standing in front of the bishop and towns people in the process. It focuses on Francis' preaching to the birds, the wolf of Gubbio and the first live Christmas creche. The pages are filled with pictures of the same artistic kind of work shown on the cover. There is about 10 lines of typing for every 2 pages. ... Read more

I got this as a pre Bar Mitzvah gift and at first I thought it wasn't what I wanted because I figured it was for younger kids but when I read it I felt it was for everybody, even people who aren't Jewish. It was a story about a person's whole life and how they change which was pretty neat to think about especially when you are having a bar mitzvah. My grandmother gave it to me because she said it was like her dad's life. It is sort of getting me ready for my bar mitzvah to think about the importance of tradition in your life ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lincoln and Me
This book is clearly written, beautifully illustrated, and it provides for very enjoyable reading for adults as well as children.5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, quiet tale of admiration for Lincoln
Louise Borden's "A. Lincoln and Me" has the great good luck of being illustrated by Ted Lewin.Author and painter work quiet miracles herein, with Borden's young boy reflecting on Lincoln and the similarities they share (not the least of which includes the same birthday).5-0 out of 5 stars A. Lincoln and Me
This a wonderful children's book for early elementary teachers. It has so many possible uses. Some of these include: individual differences, historical fiction to interest children in history, and the introduction tomoney. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just in Time for Christmas
As a member of Louise Borden's family, I'd deffinatly say that this book is worth buying. This book gave me the joyful feeling of being home for Christmas because my family has so many of the same traditions because the author is my aunt. The story is based on her life and ways of selebrating Christmas. A few months ago my family had to move to a diffrent location. When we were driveing to our new home I held this book in my arms thinking of the fact that when all of this moving was done then finaly my family would be home for Christmas. This book is deffinately worth buying!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Christmas memory trigger!
My first experience with this book was through a book read aloud given at a writing workshop I recently attended. The teacher reading the book had invited Mrs. Borden to her classroom to read and discuss her writing. The story inspired me to remember some of the special Christmas traditions shared in our family. I'm going to read this book aloud to my class of seventh graders this coming week and ask them to recall some of those special Christmas memories of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meli, now a "grown-up" horsey person!
I LOVED both "Summer Pony" and "Winter Pony" as a young girl.Unfortunately, I lent my copies out and have never seen them again...hopefully some other young person is enjoying them as much as I did!I would love to re-purchase both books and sequels would be great too.I now have two young children and would like to share these wonderful stories of 'Mokey' and 'Ginny' with them when they're older.I HIGHLY recommend these books to young horse lovers as well as other young people too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A satisfying sequel

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the kitchen of a real Chinese Restaurant in NY!
I think this a wonderful book and a up close view of what it's like in the kitchen of a Chinese take out restaurant! The book starts out on a very early Saturday morning as the owner's son comes downstairs into the back room of the restaurant as the vegetables are arriving for the day. The cooks he calls his "Uncles" are getting the woks ready and begin chopping up the chicken, pork butt, spareribs, flank steak, vegetables, and getting the noodles and rice ready for the day. Then there is folding menus until the metal shutters open at 11 am. The boys whole family works in the restaurant even his Mother & Aunt who work the counter and the phones really fast and sometime at the same time!
5-0 out of 5 stars So tasty that two hours later, you will want to re-read it
The award winning children's book illustrator loves to eat Buddha's Delight at the Kum Kau take out chinese restaurant in Brooklyn's Fort Greene/Myrtle Street neighborhood.Based on photos he took and sketches, he has created extremely realistic watercolors (worthy of a gallery show) that capture a day in the life of the take out restaurant through the eyes of the fictional son of the restaurant's owners. The inside front and back covers, alone, are worth buying the book for. They consist of the recreated takeout menus from the restaurant (with reasonable prices). The book opens with a young boy waking up on a Saturday to help out at the restaurant. As the shutters are still closed on the take out shop, the cooks receive deliveries, chop and dice, and chop some more.Menus get folded, water gets boiled, woks get washed.Customers arrive, and the whole family, cousins and uncles included, all help out.Interesting neighbors pop in, including a fire truck and its engine company crew, all ordering various favorite dishes.Who knew so much work went into the preparation of your child's take out Moo Goo Gai Pan?Later, it is evening, the neon lights comes on, and it's time for the family to order their own dinner for takeout and delivery... What will it be??Read and find out. This is a must read for parents and their kids as they wait for their dinner to be delivered ... Read more
