Editorial Review

Pippi is an irrepressible, irreverent, and irrefutably delightful nine-year-old girl who lives alone (with a monkey) in her wacky house, Villa Villekulla. When she's not dancing with the burglars who were just trying to rob her house, she's attempting to learn the "pluttification" tables at school; fighting Adolf, the strongest man in the world at the circus; or playing tag with police officers. Pippi's high-spirited, good-natured hijinks cause as much trouble as fun, but a more generous child you won't find anywhere. Astrid Lindgren has created a unique and lovable carrot-topped character, inspiring generations of children to want to Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Female Characters Ever Created
It was very empowering for me as a child to read Pippi's adventures. Her independence, common sense, strength, resourcefulness, and compassion were a tremendous inspiration to me and continue to be very commendable qualities.I don't believe much was lost in the translation of these books because the storytelling flows superbly and is exciting, engaging, and enduring. As a youngster, my favorite elements of these stories included Pippi's horde of gold, pet horse, physical strength, fantastic adventures, and red hair.As an adult, I am drawn to the heroine's wisdom and goodness of spirit. For adults who read Pippi as a child, I recommend a revisit to her world for a fresh view of her character as well as delightful reminiscing. This is terrific reading for all ages both girls and boys.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pippi Hardbound
This is a great, well-made and glossy volume of all three books in one! With caricatured illustrations, this is a fine addition for any book collector or family!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chililug chugger is back...
Pippi Longstocking is a lot of things. She plays with sparklers, she plays with guns, she resists arrest, flaunts her supernatural power, manhandles bothersome adults, insults them and disregards them as silly. She's self-important, arrogant, callous, rude, undignified, and absolutely perfect.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pippi the Hero
This is a great book and I think everybody should read it.It has funny parts such as when Pippi goes to the curcus. She competes with the strong man and wins. She's curious and always getting into trouble. She has a monkey named Mr. Nelson and a horse that lives on her porch.Pippi has mysterious treasures likes swords, music boxes, and weird rocks. She has friends that live next door named Tommy and Annika.I liked this book because it kept me interested for a week.

2-0 out of 5 stars dissenting view on Pippi
Even as a kid, I remember getting bored with Pippi quickly. Unless I'm not recalling correctly, each chapter stands alone, so there's no real plot as such. The other thing that bothered me was that the author bothered to create a defiant, irreverant, spunky girl hero, yet her two friends are stereotypically male and female, to the extent that they don't even have personalities--they're just cardboard cutouts, foils for the main character. Not only is Annika fearful, hesitant, afraid of risking adult disapproval, and not wanting to get her dress dirty, but she's not in the least influenced by Pippi to be more adventurous. Lindgren sold lots of books but to my mind didn't accomplish much. Unlike Caddie Woodlawn, this protagonist is too far out in left field to truly inspire girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pippi does the trick
I was looking to introduce my 3.5 year old and 5.5 year old to chapter books "with out pictures"(!!!).I chose Pippi Longstocking as our first book. They loved it!They were excited to go to bed each night, ready for the light to go off and mommy or daddy to read to them with a flash light.I reccomend this book, even for 3 year olds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story
I have always loved this story and was happy to find the book again. The hardcover might have better quality pictures--the softcover one seemed slightly faded from what I remember -that is why I only gave it 4 stars.Otherwise it is a wonderful story which is perfect for bedtime (especially if you live on a farm).

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Timeless Classic!!
My three year old has loved this book for the last year and it is still a favorite bedtime story. The quiet prose combined with the repetitive and beautiful imagery make this a beloved story before bed. Highly recommeded!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book, poor printing quality
I have always loved this book, and recently ordered a new hardbound copy for my three children. When I received it, I was surprised at the markedly poor paper quality (despite being hardbound) and the poor saturation of both the pictures and the script on the facing pages. Yes, the illustrations are watercolor, that is not what I mean. The ink and just the overall print quality are cheap-seeming. Near the copyright it states "printed in (third world nation)". To those of us who remember when t-shirts were union-made domestically and didn't fall apart after five washings, this seems like part of an overall trend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
In my opinion, this is one of Astrid Lindgren's best books, ever. It teaches you that you must love to be loved in return, and that love makes the world go around. I personally think that young Ronja here makes a great role-model for all young girls. ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful
this is perhaps my favorite book ever to read to little girls (my daughters at the moment are 18 and 5; i just got through reading ronia to the 5). it's incredibly joyful, incredibly sad, incrediblyadventurous, incredibly life-affirming. i particulalrly love the dad character, matt, who feels and expresses everything with total intensity and immediacy. it has an anti-pc/anti-didactice flavor that makes its actual lessons seem genuine. anyway, buy six copies and give them to all the parents of your daughter's classmates etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book
Growing up in Germany, where Astrid Lindgren is read by every child, Lindgren's stories affected me deeply. It may sound silly, but they enrich my life to this day. Without a shadow of a doubt, Lindgren is the best children's author in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite book in the whole world!!!!!!!!!!!
ever since my mommybought this book for me i have been diving in to it taking it on trips and reading it at home. this book isfull of stories about six cheerfull and mischievous kids (three boys and three girls) who live in three swidish farm houses.even if your favorite kind of stories are adventures you will love this beacause it is a huge adventure inits own way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming, delightful story.
This is a wonderful book depicting the simple joys of growing up in a small Scandinavian village in the early 20th century. The Children of Noisy Village get into mischief, celebrate birthdays and holidays and enjoy hayrides and picnics together. It's the kind of childhood we all wish we could have experienced. It's a beautifully written book and not sentimental.A great read aloud for the 5-8 set.Lots of fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Children's Classic
Pippi Longstocking is a children's classic.Kids can exercise their imagination, while following the exploits of Pippi who gets to do all the things kids think they would try if they were allowed to live unsupervised. At the same time, its all done with a wonderful innocence. One gets the impression that Tommy and Annika have the best of both worlds; they get to experience exciting adventures through their friendship with Pippi, but at the end of the day they get to go home to the security of responsible and loving parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pippi Longstocking
What child doesn't sometimes dream of being on their own, free from the rules of adults and able to do exactly what they please? Pippi Longtockings invites children into that very world, her world, where anything goes. Living on her own with a horse as a house pet and a monkey named Mr. Nilsson, Pippi turns convention upside down, along with most of the town! With pirate's gold for money and plenty to do and see, Pippi quickly captures the hearts of two neighbor children, and together they embark on a series of hilarious antics to the chagrin of adults everywhere. This freckled face red head is not only a hero to children around the world, but strongly appeals to the child inside all of us. Pippi seems a valiant reminder that the world is, ultimately, what we make it, and that some rules are made to be broken. I would recommend this book as a must read for everyone, regardless of how young or old you might be. If she hasn't already, Pippilotta Delicatessa Windowshade Mackrelmint Efraim's Daughter Longstocking is sure to quicky capture a piece of your heart as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars That Freckled Faced Red Haired Girl
Pippi Longstocking is not your average little girl. For one, she lives all by herself in a large house, with no parents around to tell her to do anything. Then there's the animal factor. Instead of having a little kitten like a normal girl, Pippi has a pet monkey named Mr. Nelson, and a horse who lives on her porch! But even with all of her strangeness, Tommy and his sister Annika - who just happen to be Pippi's next-door neighbors - think that Miss Longstocking is the best thing to ever happen to them, which is why they try to spend all of their time with her. But the fact that this red-haired girl doesn't go to school puts a damper on their weekdays. But definitely doesn't put a damper on the crazy adventures they have together, as they get into all sorts of mischief and trouble.

Pippi Longstocking is one of the most delightful characters to ever appear in children's books. She is a small girl with pigtails who is the only human living in her house. Her father is the king of the Pacific island of Kurrekurredutt and she lives with her animals. She has pigtails, freckles and is incredibly strong. Tommy and Annika are her friends whose parents let her play with Pippi all the time.

I am satisfied with this purchase, although I wish I had purchased a hard cover since the pages seem a bit faded out.It is the same story and pictures as what I remember from the original old book from when I was a child. It was definitely worth the price--great story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy sequel
Although it is difficult to imagine that such a beautiful book like The Tomten could have a worthy sequel - it is true. Tomten and the Fox is equally enchanting as The Tomten. In very few pages, the authors manage to create the winter atmosphere of a sleepy farm and a sense of harmony as the tomten restores peace to the farm. A perfect story for the childe and adult to read before falling to sleep on a winter night. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-read
This is truly one of the rarest and most phenomenal works of literature i've ever read. It's devoid of any pretense and ambition. it's a story of faith and love and faithfulness between two brothers. every word has its place in the story. I don't want to give up the plot, but I can't begin to tell you how much I recommend it. It's a touching story full of truth!
5-0 out of 5 stars an absolute gem of children's literature
I love this book! I first read it when I was in middle school in China. It is not the ordinary kind of children's book, definitely not as light-hearted as the children in the noisy villages series or Carlson on the roof. In fact, I cry each time when I read it.Even parts of book were painful to read, I believe you will finish with the feeling that love and kindness is more powerful than anything.I recommend this to all children, especially to those with siblings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasy Village
I received this book from my parents for my 11th birthday (many years ago) and this past Christmas I bought one for my 7 year old son, whose favorite characters are Ninja Turtles and Pokemons. We have read this book together during quiet Christmas time and now he doesn't go to sleep without reading at least one chapter from it. He says: "It makes me feel warm inside, mommy, and I feel happy." The book shows how simple things in life (baking cookies, going to school, pulling tooth out...) can become extraordinary adventures for children. Moreover, each and every child can relate to the children from Noisy Village. Astrid Lindgren is a real writing magician. I cannot wait for her other books to be published.

5-0 out of 5 stars Noisy Village is the Place to be!
The series of "Noisy Village" was the X'mas gift given to me 20 years ago. My dad picked up the books and signed with "To My Daughter of Noisy Village ... From Father in Quiet Village".Ienjoyed all the stories.I enjoyed the beautiful illustrations too. Someday, I thought, I'd go visit this tiny village of three houses and abunch of kids with my mom, dad and my baby sister.20 years has passed andmy parents still keep the books for me in their house - I wanted to takethe books when I moved but my new place did not have any extra room - andeverytime I come visit my parents I never forget to visit the Noisy Villagetoo. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites!
I had forgotten about this book until someone just asked me to name my favorite book. I read this book again and again as a child and found it absolutely entrancing. I highly recommend it to anyone who dreams of living in a fantasty world of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars the stuff dreams are made from
I am so happy to find this book in English so that I can share it to my little American friends. In Germany, where I was born in 1983, Astrid Lindgren is a 'must-have' in every children's bookshelf. I grew up with beautiful characters like Mio and Madita, Michel and Ronja. I think the other reviews speak for themselves, I just wanted to add one more thing from self experience:
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story for CHILDREN!!!
From E.A. Solinas' review: "It's never really dark or genuinely thrilling..."

My husband read this book to our 3 year old daughter tonight and was mortified. He was glad our daughter had fallen asleep. He thought the book was creepy and scary. He didn't like that the doll could talk, or answered back or bit the little girl.
1-0 out of 5 stars We threw this book away.
We did not like this book and found it entirely creepy that the doll grew out of the ground. We disliked it so much that we did not even want to give it away and quite possibly is the only book I have ever thrown away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet little girl gets her heart's desire
This is a suspenseful and engaging story, and the illustrations by Pija Lindenbaum really make the book.Let the kids know that in the time and place where the story is set, it would not have been unusual to leave a child at home; farm children were better disciplined then.Currently, many parents feel they need to watch and entertain their children every moment of the day, so we don't have a society of children who are sensible and self-reliant, as they were previously even from a young age. Also, people currently teach their children that every stranger is a potential menace, but in fairy tales and wisdom literature such as the Bible, kindness to strangers often resulted in unexpected gifts, as in this story. At age 6, Britta knows enough to open the gate across the road for passing carts, and an appreciative old man gives her a seed that fills her heart's desire.
