    5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
This book, in the tradition of McCloskey's "Make Way For Ducklings" or Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," is set to become a classic. The story is sweet and the illustrations are brilliant.Every page can be studied [by old and young alike] and enjoyed: the illustrations are full of humor and drama that enhances the storyline, as is so typical of the talented Kevin Hawkes.I highly recommend this books for any grandparent or parent who enjoys reading--and discovering--with their child. And it goes without saying that this book is a must-have for every library in the country!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every library should have this book
Absolutely beautiful. The illustrations are wonderful, the story is original and draws you in from the very first page.A lion wanders into the library and from the start the librarian at the desk(Mr. McBee) is to put it mildly quite upset. He runs to the head librarian(Miss Merriweather) to inform her of this turn of events. Her response is that as long as he isn't breaking any rules he can stay. This totally dismays Mr McBee but what can he do, she's the boss. The lion wanders over to story hour and he loves it. When the story hour is over he wants the lady to continue reading. When she doesn't, he lets out a roar. This of course brings Miss Merriweather, who tells him if he does that again he can no longer come to the library. So everyday the lion comes to the library(he loves the story hour) and he slowly becomes a welcomed, helpful, much loved by everyone but Mr McBee visitor. One day he is helping Miss Merriweather and she gets hurt(not by the lion). The lion runs to get Mr McBee, but of course because of the way he feels about the lion, he ignores him.The lion has no choice but to roar to get Mr McBee to go to Miss Merriweather.Mr McBee of course runs to her, to tell on the lion because he wants him kicked out of the library. The lion leaves the library on his own before anyone finds out why he roared. He knows he has broken the rules. All turns out well in the end though. This is one of the best book purchases I have made this year. I highly recommend this one to any one who appreciates a truely beautiful childrens book. The child who is lucky enough to have this read to him will be enchanted and probably will want to go to the library to see if there is a lion.

Do you like big cats? How about discovering secrets? If you do, I have a book for you! It's called, The Tiger Rising by Kate diCamillo. The book begins when a lonely and unhappy boy, Rob, discovers a tiger in the woods behind the motel where he and his father live. Rob has to figure out whose tiger it is. When he discovers the tiger belongs to the mean, grouchy and greedy motel owner, Rob concocts a plan. What will he do? You have to read the book to find out. I'm Laura, and I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, family and making difficult decisions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb but somber
This is an extremely well-written story in every regard, and would appeal to even adult readers. It is, however, a serious and downright sad story, and is not as magical as the author's latest works, a fact which may disappoint some.

1-0 out of 5 stars The exception to the Dicamillo rule
This book is really a departure from the fantastic writing I'm used to from Kate Dicamillo. While it's similar in some ways to "Because of Winn Dixie", it fails to create a bond between the reader and the book's characters. I kept thinking the story would take a turn and grab my attention, or sympathy, or anything to make me care about what is happening to these characters, but it never happened. Fabulous author, bad book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Black Sambo with illustrations by Bing
I saw this book in a bookstore this summer. I have been getting other editions from England to give to children as gifts. This is a magnificent book with great illustrations by Bing. I have read the other reviews and trust me that this story stands on its own to delight children. When I taught second grade the class loved to hear it. It is not racist in the least.Sambo worries that he will get into trouble when he loses all his new clothes. And children relate to getting into trouble with their parents. He useshis head to outwit the tigers and children naturally indentify with him; like they do with other hero figures in books and television and movies. He has a loving home with two parents who sit down with him to enjoy a wonderful pancake breakfast at the end of the story.Little Black Sambo is a story of a timeless hero! Stop worrying that the setting is India and the child looks African for Pete`a sake! Its FICTION!! Children don`t care about such picky details! This story has been delighting children for generations. Adults should go find something else to stew about!

    Editorial Review

First published in 1963, the late Shel Silverstein's children's bookdebut Lafcadio: The Lion Who Shot Back, will resonate with youngreaders much as it did 40 years ago. The affable narrator Uncle Shelby'sstory begins: "Once there was a young lion and his name was--well, Idon't really know what his name was because he lived in the jungle witha lot of other lions and if he did have a name it certainly wasn't aname like Joe or Ernie or anything like that." That all changes, however, when a circus man discovers the lion's skills as a marksman(the lion took a gun from a hunter he ate) and names him Lafcadio theGreat. When the circus man takes Lafcadio to New York City, the storytakes on a certain Crocodile Dundee quality--the lion eats themenu at a fancy restaurant, demands marshmallows (he likes the sound ofthem), and is captivated by the hotel elevator. As Lafcadio becomes morecivilized and rich and famous, however, he becomes more unhappy. In theend, to entertain the increasingly despondent star, the circus man takesLafcadio hunting in Africa where he encounters his old lion friends onthe other end of his gun. Is Lafcadio now a man or is he a lion? Hedecides he is neither and wanders alone into the valley. In typicalSilverstein style, this exuberantly-silly-yet-poignant fable, illustrated with simple, expressive line drawings, asks more questionsthan it answers. The glee the author derives from wordplay and the soundof language is positively contagious. This read-aloud classic belongs onevery child's bookshelf. (Ages 6 to 10) Read more

I hadn't heard of this book until a few years ago, when I came upon it and read a few pages in the bookstore.WOW!!! Although I appreciate Shel Silverstein's other stories and poems, nothing at all is like this one. And, that's a disappointment, because after reading this one to my children, we wanted MORE.
5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, captivating and comical...
This book is about a lion named Lafcadio, who learnt to shoot using a gun and began shooting back at hunters - hence the name of the book! The story started when Lafcadio got hold of a hunter's gun and began learning to shoot. He practiced shooting day and night, and he got better and better as the days go by.He is never short of ammunition. To get more ammunition, he just eats up hunters who come into the jungle !!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great read-a-loud book
I discovered this treasure after reading Shel's poetry books to the kids. I read it to them on a long flight across the country and had the people in the seats around me listening in discreetly. It has some great morals and gems in it. About knowing who you are inside and finding your way in this world. And about the absurdity of hunting from the lion's point of view. The kids just love the bit about every lion having their own hunter's rug. ... Read more

But it is a wonderful story with a very good lesson. I've decided to buy it so the other kids at school can have a chance to read the library copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love it and my kids love it!
I have bought all of the CD Storybooks and they have all been well worth the money.I will continue to buy them as they become available. However the one thing that I wish they would get back to is having the stories read by the actual characters themselves. The first Winnie the Pook storybook and the storybook with Bugs Life, Monsters Inc and Toys Story 1 & 2 all were read with the voices of the actual characters. It was great! Then when I bought the new ones it's a womans voice for every character and the narrator.Guess we are just spoiled. It's still worth the money and I would recommend them to anyone who wants a little peace and quiet in the car! tee hee

5-0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES it!
I felt compelled to review this, because unlike two of the other reviewers, I LIKE that there is no indication to "turn the page."The book is good, but the audio CD is even better. My son got one of these (actually slightly different, it has the "Nemo" story on it and one other that is different) for his 3rd birthday, and wants to listen to it EVERY night while he is falling asleep.I was looking on amazon to buy another one (with different stories). The woman's voice who is the narrator is very pleasant.I think it would be very annoying if there was a "beep" or "turn the page" indicator on the CD, especially for those children, like my son, who like to listen to it as a bedtime story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty cute book
This is not your typical Seuss book - it has 3 stories, all of which teach a little lesson.Once again, Seuss' language can be a little obnoxious so I must warn you there that you'll need to change a few words like "stupid" as you go.That word just doesn't sound too great coming from a two-year-old.Anyway, it shows how you should be careful of what you say before you say it in I can lick 30 tigers (meaning, beat them up and not actually "taste them" as you may think), how you should take care of yourself and not let others tell you what to do in King Louie, and to watch what you think about and how you spend your spare time in Thunk Glunk.Valuable lessons and entertaining as well. Not too big of a favorite in this house, but worth reading once in awhile.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss makes a series of lessons in a trio of stories
"I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today! and Other Stories" presents a trio of stories told in verse and illustrated by Dr. Seuss in 1969.Each story makes a simple point. The title story is about a young fellow who looks like a smaller version of the Cat in the Hat (there is reason to believe he is part of the next generation) who declares that he can lick thirty tigers today. However, as soon as he see the thirty tigers he starts finding reasons to whittle down that number, which should indicate to young readers the problems of biting off more than you can chew (pick whatever phrase that expresses this idea you like even if it is your eyes are bigger than your stomach).5-0 out of 5 stars If you love Dr. Seuss, you need this book
This is one of the great Dr. Seuss books that a lot of people don't seem to know about.Really, really fun and a little bit different from the others. My nephew cracks up every single time I read it to him. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing
The first two books in the trilogy series were fast-paced and fun. Unfortunately, this wasn't really the case with the final book (Lionboy: The Truth). The story seemed to just drag on and then at the end everything happened at once. It seemed that only parts of the book were good while the rest was slow, irrelevant and unnecessary. However, I would still recommend that you read the book so you know what happens at the end of the trilogy series.

2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointing end to the Lionboy trilogy
As an editor, I had high hopes for Lionboy: the Truth. I had really enjoyed the first instalment, Lionboy (a book with action, characterisation, and plenty of zing), and the second, Lionboy: the Chase, was also exciting and well written. The Truth, however, is lost in the telling. While this book was a nice adventure and, indeed, a necessary wrap-up to the series, I had to force myself to read it. I didn't care about the characters, many of whom seemed empty and flat. Several characters seemed altogether unnecessary. Claudio, for example, seems to simply be along for the ride - his character does not develop, and he plays no important role. Primo makes a superfluous appearance after setting out from Venice, then he disappears mid-story. The Young Lion and Elsina set out on a quest to help Charlie, but really don't achieve much, and also don't develop as characters. Maccomo's character was great - a powerful, frightening villain. But, mid-book, he too becomes passive, until he is quietly arrested at the end. Others, like Madame Baliene and the Eagle serve fleeting purposes - an example of events that bog down the story. And why, why, why does the Circe arrive at the end? So that we can catch up with old characters?

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible story incredible pictures
My son wanted this book when he heard about it at a book fair at school. It is an incredible book.We love the way it is written from a little boys perspective (Xan was 10 when the book was written.) We recently had the opportunity to meet Carol Hopcraft and her husband when they came to our city.Dooms was not really a pet - he was free to go as he liked - but he did not ever leave them.He hunted - he was not feed like a pet once he reached maturity.Shallah, his successor, did the same.I am sure their current cheetah does it as well. The book is heartwarming and is written with the love and respect they had for Dooms. This is even more evident when they talk about their life with Dooms. They, more than most of us, understand that cheetahs are wild animals. This book is not meant to tote the benefits of have a pet cheetah - it is book about the bond between humans and animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatbookfor Kids or Adults
Why is it that "kids" books are sometimes so much more interesting than Adult books? As if upon reaching adulthood we some how lose interest in animals. Well, perhaps I'm a kid at heart. I found this a great book. This is a very touching story about a family's relationship with an adopted Cheetah Cub. The story is simple yet full of truth and insight. For me, it highlights the need to see animals as dignified creatures in need of our compassion and protection. This is a book that will hopefully send an important message to young readers.Regardless of whether Cheetahs shouldbe or should not be, or were or were not domesticated, this is a cool book with neat photos and I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dooms
Actually, cheetahs are not and have never been domesticated, and they are and always have been very difficult to breed in captivity. Although they do have a less aggressive attitude than typical wild cats, they are not pets and should not be. Utilizing cheetahs to hunt over the past few hundred years was not the result of captive bred cheetahs, they were wild caught. Fortunately, outside of wild orphaned cheetahs in Africa, they are not a cat that you can purchase as a pet, because they are not suited as a pet and are not domesticated. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A. D. Tarbox, Writer
As a mother of two boys who loves animals I loved how the author weaved both into her goodnight story.SLEEPY BOY is about a little boy who spent the day at the zoo, however, it is night now and he is supposed to be going to sleep. But he can't.He keeps remembering the lionness and her cub he saw at the zoo, and how that animal mother took care of her cub.The author uses all the senses to describe what the little boy is experiencing.I liked the author's choice of words.I also liked the beautiful, soft illustrations.Dad's may enjoy reading this book to their sons, because the story starts off with Dad trying to put his little boy to bed.Mom is in the story too.I think little girls would enjoy this book despite the story being about a little boy.The theme is also something both boys and girls should be able to relate to.Sometimes it is difficult to fall asleep, especially after an exciting day.Kids can't stop thinking about all the fun things they did.Sometimes as an adult I feel this way too.I can remember when my kids were young, lying beside them, like the dad in the story, and pretending to sleep, to try and get my kids to sleep.SLEEPY BOY is a gentle, sweet, calming book.I liked it.A. 4-0 out of 5 stars My thoughts on Leo the late bloomer
I like the story because it relates to delays and that, when the time is right, they can be overcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leo the Late Bloomer
Leo the Late Bloomer is as silly as little penguins sliding around on their bellies. First, Leo, the main character, is a tiger. He is also a late bloomer. For example, he can't read, write, draw, or ear politely! Second, Leo's dad is very worried because Leo is a late bloomer. His mother assures him that Leo will be okay, but Leo's dad follows Leo around anyway. Third, when Leo finally "blooms" he finally fits in with every body else. He is very happy! This is a great book for anyone who is looking for an easy to read and enjoyable book.

    Editorial Review

A mother tiger wants her baby to go to sleep, but the little tigerresists. "'If I close my eyes,' he said, 'I can't see the sky.'" She assures himthat he will not only see the sky when he sleeps, but will float among cloudsand be cradled by the moon. Not in the least assured, the little tiger complainsthat if he closes his eyes, he will miss seeing the tree and the bird with bluefeathers. With each concern, his mother consoles him with a comforting thought. If this gentle give-and-take were not calming enough for a bedtime story,Hallensleben's lovely dreamscapes (Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Moral passable, annoying biology
My 2 year old is quite fond of this book. The adults in the household, however, find it annoying. My Australian husband loses it on about page 2, when we discover that the lion chases kangaroos. Where does this lion live, anyway? I get through that, only to become annoyed when we discover that the rabbits eat fish. It's not that I want absolute biological accuracy, but I like my stories not to be geographical nonsense, and if we're in a happy talking animals world, I think the fish get to talk too and I don't like carnivorous rabbits, which remind me of Monty Python.

5-0 out of 5 stars An old favorite
This is one of the picture books I remember reading and loving as a child. The story is sweet and satisfying in its simplicity. The hungry lion stops chasing the other animals and starts eating carrot (& fish) stew when he is invited to the rabbits' house for dinner.I also love the bright illustrations.
3-0 out of 5 stars A cute classic
This is a classic Little Golden Book, complete with the silly situation and cutesy but oddly satisfying resolution. It is definitely dated, but it is still somehow compelling.
