3-0 out of 5 stars Average writing, great concepts
I absolutely LOVED the premise of the book.In plot, Chitra's bookis clever but the writing was not as tight as I would like.It had too many adverbs and poorly constructed sentences that distracted the reader from this wonderful story. There was more "showing" and less "telling" and a lot of narrative that could have been replaced by action or dialogue. The storyline became a little too complicated and the ending, although a clever surprise was not entirely believable. It felt contrived, done,to shock rather than please.Wasn't it Somerset Maughm who said that the main aim of a novel is to please. It left me feeling a little dissatisfied.Nevertheless, for a writer of her caliber to flow into children's writing is admirable.I look forward to reading the Mirror of Fire and Dreaming.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Conch Bearer: A Review
The Conch Bearer is a fine book, but not great. It does a good job of following the traditional hero cycle, but not much more.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Conch Bearer : student review
The setting of the story is in Kolkata, India. It is about a boy who works in a tea stall striving to help his mother and sister who is ill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
Right after he saved his parents, Charlie Ahsanti is kidnapped and taken away! Being the third book in the Lion Boy series, this book is where Charlie is kidnapped away from his parents. His parents were just kidnapped away from him, meaning that his parents weren't going to take any chances. They made him stay in their hotel room and not come out. Charlie can speak to cats, so he was itching to hear some news about the kidnappers and his enemies. When his parents went out to the bank, Charlie didn't waste any time to go to the docks and search for his cat-friend Sergei. As he walked along to the beach, suddenly a sack was pulled over him and he was picked up. From the sound of the voice, Charlie knew it was Rafi, his old enemy who had tried to kidnap him before. Fortunately, Sergei was there with his little chameleon friend who knew many different languages. Quickly, Sergei told the chameleon to tell Claudio (Also Charlie's friend) to tell Charlie's parents that he's been kidnapped. Then he jumped onto the ship with Charlie and his kidnappers. Claudio rushed back told Charlie's parents and rushed back to his boss King Borris (The king of Poland). Charlie's parents rushed to the docks, got a solar powered ship, and followed Charlie's ship. A few minutes later, Claudio and King Borris arrived who also got, a ship, but this time followed Charlie's parent's ship. Charlie's ship was headed for the Corporacy headquarters, in San Antonio, Texas. The Corporacy is an evil company that takes all the gifted people in the world, and keeps them, even animals. In Charlie's case they wanted his cat speaking gift. To make a long story short, everyone arrived there, and Charlie's Dad got a job in the Corporacy pretending he came back because he agreed with their methods (In recent books, he and his wife were captured but escaped). He got close to Charlie and they made plans to crash the Corporacy. First they disconnected all the weapons, then the computers. By the time the security reached them, they couldn't shoot or do anything about him. This was a fantastic futuristic book that many other people would also enjoy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Continuation
In the sequel to Loinboy, Charlie finds himself in Venice, with 5 lions and a Saber-Toothed-Tiger . He is staying in a house that belongs to King Boris. He is still being trailed by Rafi, Charlie's plan is to get a boat and sail across the Mediterranean Sea to Morocco so that the lions may return home, and Charlie, of course, is still looking for his parents. His parents escape and are also looking for him. Have you ever heard of the Lion of St. Marks?? If you haven't you will!! They also beautifuly deepen the character of Mabel.
5-0 out of 5 stars Suspensful from Beginning to End
"LionBoy: The Chase" is the best book i've read since the first "LionBoy". I'm dead serious. I'm seventeen years old and this is the first book that has ever made me cry. There is so much Charlie Ashanti goes through to protect his Friends, the lions, and to find his parents that it almost seems real. This book follows Charlie on his continuing adventure picking up from where it left him in the first book. Charlie finds himself traveling across The Alps with six Lions; "surviving a shipwreck, escaping from a Venetian palazzo and helping a revolution, rescuing lions from a snowstorm, traveling the sea and making difficult decisions." Ha, that was actually a quote from the book. I can't steal Zizou Corder's work. I respect them too much. Plus I don't want to go to jail. The ending was the most difficult part to read. I almost cried again when I read the three most horrible words in the world, "to be continued..." Now I feel relieved though knowing that I get to read another fantastic book by Zizou Corder. I can't wait until "LionBoy: The truth". Until then I guess I'll just read the first two books in the "LionBoy" trilogy again and again and again. That's how good they are! Then when I'm done with the third book, I can read all three again. Then maybe one more time. Please folks, read this book. But don't forget the first "LionBoy". I demand you read it first. This really is the best trilogy ever written! But don't take my word for it, go read it yourself! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for teaching graphing
I am a student teacher in a 3rd grade classroom, and I have been using this to teach graphing. The students love it!I have taught three lessons over several days on pictographs, line graphs, and bar graphs.I have introduced each lesson with a few pages from this book. I highly recommend it!The photographs are wonderful, and it is a great example of using math in everyday life.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
If you have a little one, work with children, or just love tigers, this is a must!!!! So many math concepts are taught using nonfiction so children can understand the connection easier. The reader follows the tiger from infancy through adulthood using all sorts of graphic organizers to understand things like number of species alive to different types of species, etc.The photos enable the learner to understand the information in an easy manner. And the photos themselves are rich and beautiful.4-0 out of 5 stars Makes math fun and interesting
In a format that will surely please elementary school teachers struggling with curriculum frameworks, Tiger Math offers both story and instruction. The tragic tale of a motherless baby Siberian tiger named T.J. will capture reader's sympathy and interest as they read on to discover if will survive. The math part of the book is a natural extension of information.T.J.'s growth and progress is a concern, and is compared to his father's at the same age.Not only are concepts of graphing introduced, but interpreting data in is equally stressed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I learned a lot about wolves from this book. And the pictures are sooooo cute! It is my favorite! I would get it if I were you!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Kids Love It!!
This is an intriguing, engaging little tale about a baby wolf who learns how to howl and become part of the pack. The writer, Batten, writes in a lovely, simple way that seems to anticipate the child's next, inevitable question. The story is well augmented by the illustrations which are both pleasing to the eye and informative. A fun, excellent read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Baby Wolf not just for six year olds
A simply lovely book that both my three year old daughter and I both enjoyed reading. Well thought out illustrations are a credit to the artist with an informative text that can be read even to a little one, without"what does that mean, dad" every five seconds. All in all just anice simple book. ... Read more

Alexander McCall Smith, best-selling author of the celebrated No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, connects with an entirely new audience with his beginning chapter book series featuring a young African boy fiercely devoted to the conservation of his animal friends. Akimbo lives on the large African game reserve where his father works, and is constantly on the lookout for an opportunity to see or learn something new. In Read more

It was one of the most passionate books I ever read.It made me cry.The pictures were wonderful. The book had very good descriptions.People who like animals, stories that take place in Africa, and love will like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Akimbo Saves The Day
This book is McCall Smith's second book in the "Akimbo" series and like virtually all his books, it is masterfully done.In this book, Akimbo goes on a trip with his father, the new Head Gamekeeper of the wildlife preserve. They have gone to check out reports that a lion is eating cattle. The loss of cattle is akin to the loss of pure gold in Akimbo's part of Africa. Thus, such a lion must be handled.

4-0 out of 5 stars A dandy lion
Having lambasted, decimated, and torn to shreds James Daugherty's remarkably racist, "Daniel Boone", it seemed only fair that I read a book of his that did not hinge on either white supremacy or genocide. "Andy and the Lion" seemed a good guess and after I read it I found I didn't just tolerate it... I didn't just like it... Heck I LOVED this book. What a great story! What superb illustrations and well phrased narrative. What an excellent excellent picture book... one that all children should read and remember for as long as they have brains to do so. Mr. Daugherty has not just reinterpreted the tale, "Androclus and the Lion", he has put his mark on it and made it his very own.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but outdated
I read this book for my Children's Lit class at West Virginia State College. This book is a nice retelling of a wonderful little fable, and sends children a great message. It has a fatal flaw, though: for todays children, it is a little outdated and perhaps too slow. I read it to my three year old cousin and, though she always sits and listens to stories, she got very fidgety and impatient. The illustrations are in black and white and may be a bit dull for children raised with television. The grammar and vocabulary is also a little outdated. Many people would have more success reading their kids newer books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get it just for the art!
James Daugherty's drawings are absolutely wonderful! This book is a must just for this.My daughter and I (she is 6) go over each picture in detail and talk about them.Regarding the story, it's simple but imaginative. It is suited for a younger audience. One shouldn't forget that the subtitle is "The Power of Gratitude".It gets this message across. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yellow Eyes
I read this book when I was in elementary school (going on 43 here!) and until a year ago, I had this book in my collection to pass on to my kids, but sadly it has disappeared. I used to love this book and I love reading books about animals and believe it or not this book made me cry as did the book Snow Dog and Old Yeller. I even did a report on Yellow Eyes when I read it for school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still influenced decades later!
Picked this up at a Scholastic bookmobile at school, when I was a but a wee tot -- relatively speaking.STill one of my favorite books, and it held up when I re-read it decades later!

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic
I read this book when I was a kid and remember it as one of my favorites.Recently I found it in a box of old books at my mother's house and brought it out to read to my kids. They where just as spell bound as I was.It is one of the most successful books at seeing life through the eyes of a wild animal without huminizing the animal. It does harken back to a time when the govermant paid people to kill animals rather then preserve them. That is a little confussing to kids but is a valuable history lesson. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A truly splendid picture book by a former Disney animator!
I've always liked Bill Peet's work ever since I was a young girl because of his very zany style that he had inherited from his days at Disney's Studios. His illustrations in his delightful books for kids are quite elegant and humorous as well and he also had a poetic talent for creatinganimal fables all about lessons taught in a certain character's life. HereI recently came across this very amusing tale all about five crowardlylions who had to face the stage-fear of a big circus audience gawking atthem. So the owner of the Big Top was forced to hire a very cruellion-tamer to whip them into obedience. Instead, the five poor lions allbegan to howl and howl despite being threatened to be sold away or fednothing but lettuce and heavily sprayed with water from elephants' trunks. And the whole circus suffered as a result from the mistreatment of suchnoble creatures like lions. What a beautiful story that carries a verystern moral that everyone of any age will understand at once!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of Bill Peet
We were given a very worn copy of this book, which set us off in search of a clean copy, and turned us on to the work of Bill Peet."We" are a family of five, with two kids ( ages four and five) that are read toeach night at bedtime. If you are a parent who engages in this readingritual, then you know what a drag it is to read the same book 200 times ina year. You learn to dread having to read some books, and hope for others. "Randy's Dandy Lions" is the one I hope to have to read.5-0 out of 5 stars My 8-year old memorized it.
The lions' fear of large crowds is understandable. Randy's refusal of Colonel Bower's order to whip them at the cost of his prized circus job is an act of nobility.Peet's iambic pentameter is at once charming and most accessible. This is a one-more-chance morality tale that delights without resort to supernaturalism. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent story
my 3 yr old daughter and i chose this book at the library today based on the reviews i read from amazon; and the book did not disappoint.the story is very well written; simple and not too complicated, however, not so simple as to lose the interest of the child/reader.I am finding as my daugher is building her library, that most of her favorite books are the older ones, such as this; with very good and simple story lines, happy endings and simple illustrations.nothing too excitable, scary, or inappropriate for her age.this book would be great for 2yr old right on up to kindergarten.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bonjour, Happy Lion!
My two-year-old loves Happy Lion, and her dad & I love reading it with her.It is a kick to hear her exclaim "Bonjour, Happy Lion!" and "Au revoir, Happy Lion!" on cue.The pictures are nice and the story is engaging. We recently bought five copies to keep on hand as gifts for young friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars The information is packed in along with color photos
Stephen Swinburne's informative survey of the bobcat may present only 32 pages of detail, but the information is packed in along with color photos and provides enough natural history coverage to prove suitable for reports. The color photos throughout are interesting and educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT GREAT BOOK!!!!
I loved the author's book Coyote. I was hoping that this guy would write other books about other animals.I really felt like I was looking for the bobcat myself.I love learning about the bobcat's habits, what it eats, how it lives, and the history of the bobcat. The photographs by Susan Morse were amazing.Wow.I learned how hard it was to even see a bobcat. How did she ever get pictures like this?Well, she did! This makes me want to be a park ranger. Can't wait for the next book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Illustrated Picture Book
Eric Rohmann's imagination is a place I'd like to live in. His imagery is stunning in The Cinder-Eyed Cats. He has created a book that you will pick up again and again, if only to flip through the beautiful images. It will become a well-loved part of your library. 5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all ages
...thoroughly enjoy the pictures and the story. The art work is fabulous. Great for any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good adaption from the movie
Concise novelization from the movie with nice full color pictures in the middle. My twelve year old son, my mother and I really enjoyed the movie as well as this book. My mother also thought some of the foreign films like Duma are often more engaging than a lot of the stuff coming out of Hollywood. ... Read more
