Great fun,for the readers rather than the characters.
The Bauldalaire children are likeable,intelligent protagonists,but since their parents died in a horrible fire,their lives have been filled with misery and despair.The first installments in the series tell about their visits with three eccentric gaurdians(Uncle Monty,Aunt Josephine,and the wicked Count Olaf).Lemony Snicket is a mysterious and engaging narrator who dedicates each book to his lost love Beatrice (who seems to have died in a fire).This darkly humorous,wickedly entertaining series will appeal to children who enjoy the works of Roald Dahl (JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, MATILDA etc.)Like the children in Dahl's books, the Bauldalaires are surrounded by dimwitted adults,who believe nothing the kids say.This is an atmospheric,exciting series that will stretch reader's imagination while it enriches their vocabulary.

Okay, okay. Not the same old book that has all happy cheerful stuff thrown throughout a story. The Baudelaires' lives are full of misfortune, unluckiness, all that bad stuff.

Parents - Please Read This Review
I really wanted to like this book. I bought it to read with my 9-year old because she and I are so interested in Pirate stories. I am also a fan of Dave Barry and so thought this would be fun for both her and I.
The answer to (almost) all of your questions about Neverland
This really cool "prequel" answers once and for all the burning questions you have been harboring about the man-child who lives in Neverland with other little boys.No, no - not THAT one, I'm talking about Peter Pan, the fairy-loving, pirate-hating leader of the Lost Boys. (Same thing, you say - but that's a different story altogether)
Eh...
This book is okay. It never really immerses you in the world--instead you just sort of skim along the top of it, half-caring about what happens next. Everyone feels like a stock characters: the "bad guys" are bumbling idiots, and the good guys (even Peter) are self-sacrificing and far-seeing. We barely even see the task force which calls itself the Starcatchers, and the book really could have survived without them. Tinkerbell doesn't show up till the last page or so (I spent most of the book wishing for the fairy to come breathe some complexity and life into the cast), and the croc never eats the clock.

Number the Stars
Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry is an incredible book. It's 1943 and World War 2 is taking place. Annemarie Johansen, a ten year old girl, and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of the happier times before war. But they can't do anything to stop it. There are German nazis across every street and they are taking the Jewish people to concentration Camps. Ellen is Jewish so Annemarie Johansen and her family just need to find a way how to help out. They pretend Ellen is Annemarie's sister and they also go the next day to where Annemarie's uncle lived, near the sea. One way or another they find a way how to escape from the soldiers and Annemarie's uncle took them to Sweeden, towards freedom, of course, until the war ended.
Thought Provoking Story of Courage
I came across Numbering the Stars while clearing out a storeroom at the school where I teach.Since I had already read and reviewed The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Messenger by Lois Lowry, I took the book home and read it over the weekend.

THE LITTLE OLD LADY
I was impressed how easy the title was to fine and it is a very nice book to read to children

My preschool class absolutely loves this book.Whenever I read it, I read it in the voice of the little old lady.The 2nd time I read the book, my students started to say some parts of the story, like "the head when nod nod".They want me to read this book every day to them.I defnitely recommend this book to everyone.

Great Book
I started reading this book to my kids when they were both around the age of four.Now they are about six and eight and they still love it.Funny book.

Read it, love it!
My son and I have read this book over and over and over again.Whether it's Halloween time or not this book will be a sure favorite of kids' who like the dark side.Don't take this to mean that the book is dark or scary.What I mean is that if your kids have a taste for spookies then this book will not fail to please.Great pictures with subtle hidden pictures that show that the spookies and such aren't real in this haunted house.The text is fun to read outloud to the wee ones.

Favorite in our house!
My son got this book and the matching stuffed dinosaur when he was 2. I think that was the start of his dinosaur obsession! :) We love this book and a year later we still read it all the time. He has the whole book memorized and can "read" it to us. We have started to acquire some of the other "How Do Dinosaur" books but this will probably always be the favorite. It's a great book!! We love the pictures and the story!!

We Love It!
How could this book not recieve 5 stars? My first encounter I had with this book was at a daycare I worked at for the 2 year olds and they always requested it and loved it. Of course after reading it so many times it became memorized and they would help by shouting out words here and there. I loved it so much I made it a point to get it for my daughter and she has the same reaction. We read it every night and she knows the story, acting it out and recalling parts here and there. I got the paper back because it was cheaper but we'll be getting the hard back soon due to so much use. Definitely a title that should be included in your library.

SCRUMDIDLEUMPTIOUS!
The mysterious candy maker ''Willy Wonka'' is hiding five golden tickets in his famous ''Wonka Bars''. The children lucky enough to findthese tickets will be taken on a tour (hosted by Mr. Wonka himself) of the enormous Wonka factory. The world is searching frantically for the tickets, and the first person to find one is ''Augustus Gloop'' a greedy German boy is addicted to chocolate. The second ticket finder is ''Veruca Salt'' a spoiled little girl who quite literally gets everything she asks for, no matter how absurd her request is. The person who discovers the third ticket is ''Mike Teave'' an irritable boy addicted to TV. ''Be quiet'' he tells whoever is foolish enough to ask him a question while his show is on ''THIS is the life''. ''Violet Beauragrde'', a dimwitted gum chewing girl finds the fourth ticket, (she had to give up gum-chewing for a while so she could switch to chocolate. And the title character ''Charlie Bucket'' finds the fifth and final golden ticket which was quite a miracle, considering how poor his family was and how little money they had to spend on luxuries such as candy. This motely crew of children are allowed to discover the wonders of Mr. Wonka's factory.
It's about just desserts and not just about desserts
Reading a novel after having seen a cinematic adaptation is always a challenge. One of the deepest joys of reading---relying on one's imagination to create the characters, their voices, the locales, etc.---is preempted and nullified by the choices made by directors, producers, casting agents, and set designers. Thankfully, the best books which have been adapted for the screen are complex and spacious enough that they allow some free play in spite of this imaginative preemption, and such is the case with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. THE CHOCOLATEY BOOK EVER!!!

Hi!I just finished reading BUD, NOT BUDDY by Christopher Paul Curtis. It's a very good book I must say and this is why I give it a 5 star rating.

"Bud, Not Buddy" was a heart-felt book. Ten-year-old Bud Caldwell was the main character of this book. His mother had died when he was six years old. He had a suitcase with his personal things in there. Nobody was allowed to look in there without his permission. He also wrote a book for himself. It was called,"Bud Caldwell's Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making A Better Liar Out Of Yourself." Bud's mom never mentioned anything about his father. He had a flyer in his suitcase that had a picture of a band on it. He was pretty sure that the person who played the bass was his father. Herman E. Calloway was the guy's name. Since he had nowhere to live, he went in search for Mr. Calloway. Bud's destination was Grand Rapids. In order to get to grand Rapids, he had to get to Hooverville, Flint. He was already living in Flint. He just had to find Hooverville. Hooverville was a place for people without money. When he got to Hooverville, Bud made a new friend named Deza Malone. She later became his girlfriend. She gave him tips for living life without money. Bud's ticket to Grand Rapids was just a train ride away. Unfortunatly, Bud missed the train. He had to walk from there. He was stopped by a man named Lefty Lewis. He offered Bud a ride to his home. Since Bud didn't have a home, he had to use his book to get him out of this mess. Bud told him that he lived in Grand Rapids and that Herman E. Calloway. was his father. Lefty Lewis fell for it and took Bud to Grand Rapids. Bud was finally at his destination. He went inside the building where the band practiced. He confronted Mr. Calloway and told him that he was his Bud's father. Mr. Calloway was mad at this and replied with a no. Bud didn't believe him. At the end of the story, Bud finds out that Herman E. Callowaywas actually his grandfather. I would have never guessed this ending until I read the entire book. It was very surprising. Bud Caldwell came looking for a home and ended up being with his long-lost grandfather. He struggled through some difficult times but he succeeded in the end. ... Read more

Awesome book/Trilogy!
I was looking for something to get me through the long wait until HP book 7 will be published and...well, I came across this Trilogy and I am so glad I did! It is absolutely incredible....just like with HP, once you start to read you get pulled into a magical world, which you do not want to leave from! Too bad there are only 3 books in this trilogy! It's an absolute musthave for everybody who loves mystical books.

Original vision, flawed plot
This feels like a book that the author started at the end and worked his way back to the beginning.He had an idea for how the book -- and the series as a whole -- should end, and then, working backwards, constructed a plot to make that end happen.The good aspect of the book is that it's a fine and meaningful end (although controversial); the negative aspect is that the journey to the end is full of awkward plot devices that rob the ending of some satisfaction.
Superb ending to trilogy
An excellent ending to the trilogy. Fast-paced without sacrificing characterisation, and a satisfying end to the conundrum of Nathaniel. A great deal has been made of the character of Bartimaeus, the wise-cracking djinn; this volume maintains the level of his characterisation, and adds some affecting glimpses of his past with the eponymous Ptolemy. However, the chilly, complex Nathaniel, and his tentative, developing relationship with Kitty Jones the revolutionary, which tracks and depends on his tentative, developing relationship with his own conscience, is what gives the climax its poignancy. It adds an important dimension to the human protagonists' actions that, as Stroud occasionally reminds us, they are still only adolescents, cast into roles and situations that would tax full-fledged and experienced adults. ... Monsterrific!
I simply MUST put in a plug for this fabulous book! As a mom and an illustrator, I was drawn to the amazing art, and I thought perhaps the kids would like it, too. Oh, MAN! It delivered on all points: Amazing art, perfect rhyme (SO hard to find rhyme that really works in a book; it's spot on), and YES- the kids love it and keep going back to read it over and over. I think they do view it as a bit of a fun challenge- there are lots of details and subtleties in the art and text. And I did have to sing "The Girl from Ipanema" to them, because they've never heard it. Overall-YES! Make more books like this, Adam Rex!

It's pronounced Fraaank-unt-steen
Okay. So here was my dilemma. I was supposed to review a children's book of poetry and I had several choices in front of me. I could review the inner city take on "Casey At the Bat". I could do the meaningful one about a Caribbean country. I could do the one about various epitaphs to people of different professions (I am not making this up). Or I could do the goofy monster one. And the ball fell in the goofy monster's court by a loooong shot. You hold "Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich" in your hands, and you may not be sure whether or not to trust it. Should I give this to a child? Will they actually enjoy it? Then you read the tiny byline under the title. "And other stories you're sure to like, because they're all about monsters, and some of them are also about food. You like food, don't you? Well, all right then". Any picture book of poetry that says, "Well, all right then", on its cover has won my irony-laden little heart. It's just a nice plus that the poems inside just happen to be funny, beautifully illustrated, and interesting in all sorts of different ways. YOU MUST OWN THIS BOOK

Absolutely the Best Storybook Ever
I loved Richard Scarry when I was young. When I was 4 I got My first book the Bunny Book. I loved it, it was so cute. I got the best storybook for my son when he was 2. He's now 3 1/2 and i'm not kidding i've read this book to him every single day since! He loves it. He calls it the bunny book. Because he too loves that cute story. Sometimes i'll find him in his room just studying the pictures he can be there for a very long. This is a must for every childs library.I also recommend the Richard Scarry's Best Learning videos from Rrandom House.My son loves those as well.

My favorite book as a child
I am 28 years old and still remember how much I LOVED this book as a child.I read it until it fell apart, and my parents constantly tried to hide it on top of the refrigerator because they were tired of reading it to me over and over.Buy this book for your kids!I'm now an English teacher and, of course, an avid reader.When my students ask me what is my favorite book, I name this one, because it was my first loved book.

Richard Scarry's books are so simple to read, and the illustrations are classic.I remember reading his books when I was growing up, and I just loved them.This book includes many wonderful stories that aren't lenghthy so they won't lose your child's interest.I definitely want my daughter to experience them. ... If It's Cronin, It HAS To Be Five Stars!
In our library, we can't keep her books on the shelves, and the once-again winning combination of her words with Betsy Lewin's pictures just cannot be beat.Our small patrons love her books on one level, while their parents are getting a kick out of them on a totally different one.I always appreciate authors who understand that they have two audiences, after all, and Ms. Cronin feeds both appetites.The clever, gentle humor of this book will be welcomed by discerning parents, and by the end, I am sure of two things: Farmer Brown will never catch on, and I will never hear "Born To Be Wild" again without thinking of the beloved Duck.

Better than its predecessors!
I didn't think life got any better than Click Clack Moo, but Dooby Dooby Moo tops it. I love it! Dooby Dooby Moo is one of those rare books that holds enjoyment for kids and adults alike. Kids like the story of the talent show and each animal's attempts to win, while parents get to laugh their heads off at the pig's interpretive dance. It's a great read-aloud book because the adult can sing along (very easy tunes we all know) and kids love that part. I highly recommend Dooby Dooby Moo, especially to any lover of Farmer Brown's motley crew. ... Read more

Oh, the wonderful things Mr. Brown can do! In this "Book of Wonderful Noises," Mr. Brown struts his stuff, as he imitates everything from popping corks to horse feet ("pop pop pop pop" and "klopp klopp klopp," respectively) while inviting everyone to join him in the fun. A favorite in our house!
My son got this book from grandma when he was a little over a year old.It was an automatic favorite!It starts with "Oh the wonderful sounds Mr. Brown can do.He can sound like a cow.He can go moo moo."It has pictures that are engaging for their simplicity and a rhyme that is flowing but varied so it doen't get boring.My son loved learning the noises and now he says them along with me when I read.I've even caught him looking at this book and saying the noises to himself.He's now 2 and we still read this one often (and I have it memorized).I highly recommend this book.I just don't know how you couldn't like it!

Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You
This was for my daughter who is 11 months old. I liked it because it is a board book and she cant rip the pages.

What a fun book!
My son loves this book -- and so do we!My husband and I have really enjoyed reading this book, which is great because we read it everyday.The boardbook design is perfect for young children because the pages can't be easily ripped up or torn, and if a little drool gets on a page or two, it can be wiped off with a damp rag.

simple and fun
Caps for Sale is a delightful tale that is simple but with the right amount of absurdity that kids love.The repetition of words and the copycat element (when the monkeys imitate the peddler's actions)is entertaining for very young children.

Funner than I even remembered!
In searching reviews to find great books, I struggled to remember if I liked this one as a kid!I remembered the cover, but not the story!When it came, I was delighted to find that I loved the story, and my son has a NEW favorite book!He grins ear to ear as soon as the peddler wakes up from his nap and discovers only one hat left on his head.My 20 month olddoesn't sit still from that point on in the story.He crouches so as to make monkey gestures and sounds.He wags his finger and says "tsk tsk tsk" just like the monkeys!He stomps his feet and waves his arms just like the monkeys!The monkeys are so mischievous, and I think my son relates! LOL!All in all, the little copycat monkeys throw their hats down to the peddler when he gets angry enough at their taunting to throw his hat down on the ground!It is very cute.There isn't variety in the illustrations as the same vintage colors are used on every page, but the story is so strong that I have to give this one 5 stars!Enjoy!I still do!

"Caps for Sale" by Esphyr Slobodkina is a marvelous children's book. An ingenious plot that I remember from my childhood. Now I am enjoying it again with my children. I was always fascinated by how he balanced those hats. The illustrations are quite simple but intriguing. Just looking at Pezzo with all those hats piled one on top of another is more interesting than many of the high tech special effects I have seen in today's movies. GREAT!
I thought these books, just like the others, were amazing! They added plot and depth and mystery to the storyline and put me on the edge of my seat! I can't wait for the next books!

The Gloom Loons... FOR REAL!!!
"The Trouble Begins" was wonderful. "The Situation Worsens" was okay. "The Dillemma Deepens" were dull but interesting. THIS???????? It's a disgrace!!! I could put up with Lemony Snicket's talking for a while but this is insane!! I had to skip whole pages just to keep awake!? I mean WHO, WHO with the right mind wants definitions, stupid stories and lectures in an ADVENTURE BOOK!? But not just that, it becoming SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!! At first, the Series of Unfortunate Events was wonderful, full of adventure and mystery and exiting parts. Now, what I see is count olaf giving up on the children and the children going with a STUPID organization and DULLL characters and etc. and etc. and etc. I was so disssapointed with "The grim grotto" that I don't want to even see a page of "The Penulitamate Peril" that is the hardest to say. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY OR EXITEMENT FOR THIS PIECE OF JUNK, IF YOU LIKED THE BAD BEGGINNING, THE WIDE WINDOW, OR EVEN THE DULL MISERABLE MILL, THIS IS NOT THE SEQUEL FOR YOU. AS I SAID THE GLOOM REALLY LOOMS!!!
