5-0 out of 5 stars My children are enchanted, amused and QUIET!
I purchased this CD prior to a family roadtrip last spring, having no prior exposure to Arnold Lobel, or Frog & Toad. My 6-year old son and 4-year old daughter were quick converts. They easily follow the stories, laugh at the absurdities of the characters' sweet friendship. They constantly requested it to be played in the car whenever we were out and about. Since then, we have also purchased "Mouse Tales" on CD, which they also adore. Intelligent, engaging, & fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Include Read-Along Book
Because this item did not come with a companion book, it does not suit my family's needs. This is most disappointing. For the price, it should include a companion book.

Frog and Toad agreed: it was a perfect day for a swim. And Frog was kind enough not to look at Toad in his bathing suit, per Toad's request. But when the swimming was over, a crowd had gathered to see Toad in his funny-looking suit, and neither Frog nor Toad could make them leave. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the beginning of a beautiful friendship.....
this book came out in 1970......it truly showed me what a really great childrens book should be.......the five stories are about friendship as it should be in real life but it's not......this will truly enlighten anyone who reads it...adult or child.......

4-0 out of 5 stars Endearing
This is a very sweet book. Some of the stories seem to not have point at the end, but that's probably because I'm looking at them from an adult female point of view.Other stories are endearing.A sweet, sweet book that teaches what it is to be a good friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The simple but true-to-human-life stories and the drawings are a delight.
It's so wonderful to have a book that a very young child can read himself, and then ask the adult, or other reader, with whom he is sitting, for help with difficult words. When I was a kid, 65 years ago, we only read the simplest of books, with no real relationships, because we were expected to read them without help. Frog and Toad have it all over Dick and Jane!

4-0 out of 5 stars Frog and Toad are an amazing buy
I have a 3 year old daughter that LOVES this series. The art is very "old" -but in a good way.She likes the story "The Shivers" most of all.You can't beat this series for the price, or the lessons learned.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review by Alaisiah P.S. 39 and Michael P.S. 39
You should read Frog and Toad because they can teach kids a lot of lessons. For example, if you are a kid and you want to learn to be nice to a friend then Days with Frog and Toad is a really good book for you. You'll also learn that sometimes friends aren't nice to each other. So, if you're the kind of reader who wants to learn about relationships then this is a book for you to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized, Commendable Variety, and Entertaining Illustrations
What a fantastic way to wet a child's appetite(or adults, for that matter) for poetry! This collection offers the silly and the sad, the simple and verbose, the long and the short, and the wise and other wise.=)Children can request which poems they may choose to use the extensive index or well organized table of contents to find exactly what they are looking for (Halloween poems, poems about nature or school, etc). This is a perfect fit from nightstand to classroom shelf.I highly recommend this collection of poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Start Your Collection
This book is filled with poetry for any and every occasion and has great illustrations to go along. It is a good book to help you discover what type of poetry your children will enjoy.

2-0 out of 5 stars this is for "children" 9 and older?
The collection doesn't sound too bad, but won;t a self-respecting 9 year old (or older) person reject this book simply on the basis of the illustrations (you klnow, the ones with the "round faced happy children") and the title of the book? I know when I was nine I avoided books with "children's" in their title. ... Read more

"You know, Toad," said Frog with his mouth full, "I think we should stop eating. We will soon be sick." "You are right," said Toad. "Let us eat one last cookie, and then we will stop." Frog and Toad All Year by Arnold Lobel teaches the lesson that friends do things to make each other happy. The problem was Toad's hat didn't fit.So Frog sneaks into his house to shrink the hat and make him happy on his birthday. After Frog shrunk the hat, Toad didn't run into things or fall in holes. And if you love Frog and Toad Together you can also read Frog and Toad All Year.

Editorial Review

For fans of these famous amphibians, the continuation of Frog and Toad's saga gives a glimpse of what those rascals are up to all year long. They frolic together over four seasons, with a story for each celebration, plus one for Christmas. Glide down the snow-covered hill with Toad, hunt for spring with Frog, and discover just who is hiding under all that melted chocolate ice cream. Beginning readers will love the thrill of reading a chapter book by themselves; the simple language and unique adventures encourage and entertain those just entering the world of words. The endearing duo is depicted in the warmest of browns and softest of greens, reflecting the tender gentleness of their friendship. Children's bookshelves should be filled with all the classics in Arnold Lobel's series, including Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars another lobel must have
My 2 1/2 yr old daughter loves Lobel books and when I moved "up" from the ones in the Easy Fiction area of the library to the Easy - Reader ones I was very pleased as was she.Very short, simple stories with a very clever and imaginative storyline.Like Mousesoup and Mousetails, the stories are just simply good reading stories that my daughter loves hearing over and over and I dont tire of reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pure and rare jewel
This book is marvelous. All the stories in this book are so charming, innocent and beautiful. I dont believe my own eyes. Now, all the illustrations are also absolutely wonderful. They are incomparables. As I said, I dont believe my own eyes, because in today's book market (dominated by emptiness, futility and commercial [...]), it is like a glass of pure water in the desert. More, it is a miracle! I read it every night to my children, and cannot put it down myself. I am sad on only one point: I cannot give it 6 stars. Please, buy this beautiful little book to your children. It is a wonderful gift they wont forget. One of these few wonderful souvenirs we all love so much to remember from our childhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Summer Reading at its best
My son's teacher recommended that he read a lot over the summer to keep up his reading skills. We found this and similar books which are really a delight for him to read...the format as a "chapter book" for young readers allows him some challenge yet we can complete a story in one short sitting. The book's humor keeps him interested and anxious to read the next short story to see what Owl is up to next.I recommend this and any Arnold Lobel books for your young readers.Other favorites are the "Frog and Toad" series, also by A. Lobel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good and clever short stories
sometimes the best childrens stories are the ones that dont always have to teach something; although stories with lessons are a wonderful way to teach, the little stories in "mouse tales" are just there; to be read, and to be heard by the child and enjoyed without some lesson attached.they are whimsical and cute.my 2 1/2 yr old daughter loves lobel books and enjoyed having a big kid lobel book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addictive!
Arnold Lobel is a master story teller! He really knows how to capture a child's attention and tickle his imagination and funny bone. All of the stories in this book are great and should be classics if they are not already. My son (5 years) started this book and could not put it down! He read 5 of the 7 chapters at once and only reluctantly stopped because I told him it was time for bed. He continued with the rest of the 2 chapters in the morning. Any book that can do that gets and deserves 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Memories
I bought this because it was read to me as a small child. I plan to read it to my children one day.

1-0 out of 5 stars Anthropomorphic Sermons
The problem with fables is that they are, at heart, sermons and most people don't want a sermon on a daily basis. However, if your sermon is interesting and funny and speaks to the world people see and understand, then people listening to it (or reading your fables) will not mind a little preaching. Aesop understood this, as did Jesus. I'm not so certain Arnold Lobel does. While he has a nice idea, the stories in this collection are dry and preachy and the only truly great part of the book is the wonderful illustrations, which are humorous and interesting, everything his fables aren't. If you've got a hankerin' for fables, then go to the source--Aesop. Old, but still good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fables: Good stories with Good morals!!
I really enjoyed this caldecott award winning book.I think that this is a great book for childern. Not olny does it have great illistrations, but it also gives wonderful lessons to children.By using a wide range of animals to play the parts in the stories, the author makes learning these lessons fun for kids.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fables and animalia
I'm on an Arnold Lobel kick these days.Having breezed through the sweet, "A Treeful of Pigs", stopped to admire his treasury of nursery rhymes (two thumbs way way up on that one), and genuflected in the face of the eternally classic tales of Frog and Toad I'm actually getting around to reading his 1981 Caldecott winning picture book, "Fables".Lobel deserves every inch of praise he received for this admirable work.Imagine how difficult it must have been to create not one, not two, but twenty absolutely new fables filled to the brim with wit and wisdom! Not an easy task.Still, Lobel not only faced up to the challenge but also accomplished it in a manner best befitting the gentleman he truly was. These are fabulous fables.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Grasshopper Review
I would recommend this book to anyone, both young and old.The grasshopper wants to go on a journey and he finds a road.On this road he encounters many insects different from himself. His meetings are funny and make you want to turn the page to see what he might encounter next.It is easy to read for early readers and is a cute and silly story that makes reading fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stories For Children / Allegories for Adults
A grasshopper has six different encounters on his journey through the 57 pages of this book. In the first encounter, "The Club," he meets a group of beetles that enthusiastically rally for "morning," but become rather cross when they discover that the grasshopper loves "afternoon" and "night" too. In the second encounter, "A New House," the grasshopper comes upon a worm that lives in an apple, which suddenly begins to "roll down the road" and smashes "into a hundred pieces." The completely unfazed worm then crawls into "a new house," as if the previous home meant nothing at all. In the third encounter, "The Sweeper," the grasshopper runs into a housefly that is intent on sweeping "until the whole world is clean." In the fourth encounter, "The Voyage," the grasshopper comes in contact with a know-it-all mosquito that insists that the grasshopper use a "little boat" to cross a tiny "puddle" that the grasshopper could easily step over because "it is a rule" and "rules are rules." In the fifth encounter, "Always," the grasshopper, who does "something different every day of his life," meets three butterflies who "do the same thing at the same time each and every day." In the final encounter, "At Evening," the grasshopper comes across two dragonflies "zipping and zooming" around so rapidly that they "do not have time to look at" nature's wonders, as opposed to the grasshopper who is "happy to be walking slowly down the road" taking in everything. A child who has learned to read at age four will be able to handle this at age five and six, but will most likely not comprehend the intended satire and allegory.

My husband grew up with Miss Suzy being read to him & his siblings by his mom. She reads it with a British accent and funny voices, which makes a delightful book even more so. My kids are just captivated, and will listen to it over and over and over--and now they can quote it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nightmares : Poems to trouble your sleep
Ok, they aren't quiet that scary, but they do show another side of poetry. It is actually a lot of fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book...even for kids!
I read this interesting book of poems as a young child and I've never forgotten it. As my introduction to reading poetry for pleasure, Nightmares was a delight and I still remember some verses probably 15 years later. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC!
I basically grew up on this and "Headless Horseman Rides Tonight". This is something that you can appreciate whether you're a child or an adult, especially if you're like me and you checked it out of the school library religiously. There was a review that said it was "unsuitable for children", ummmm yeah sure. As someone who was reading this book at the age of eight years old I can say that it helped expand my imagination and got me really interested in literature. One day I hope my little nephew will read this book and experience the same joy I did when I was little. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is a great book for parents to read to their kids!My mom read this book to me and my sisters when we were little and now I'll be reading it to my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars a finely aged and well worn classic
my dad used to read this book to me when i was a small boy. it was always one of my favorites to hear and i believe my dad's favorite to read. he had a way of reading this story that was so engaging. i still have that very same book tattered and worn having also been read many many times by me to my three boys, now mid to late teens. the story is one im sure many people can relate to. something akin to the grass is always greener on the other side, be careful what you wish for and sometimes its better to leave well enough alone. at least thats what i seem to get out of it. small pig lives on a country farm with the farmer and his wife. small pig is heavy into his mud. the farmer is cool with this but his wife is not. she decieds to clean it up using a monstrous vacuum cleaner. small pig is not with a clean pigpen so he runs away. he happens upon various places with mud that look good at first but turn out to be inhospitable. eventually he finds his way to the big city. noise and filth abound and he finds what he thinks is a wonderful mud pit but turns out to be a cement square for a sidewalk. next thing he knows he's stuck and no matter how hard he tries he cannot get out. slowly people begin to notice his predicament and the crowd eventually swells to mob like proportions. mean while the farmer and his wife are frantically searching for small pig. as the fire department shows up to rescue small pig the farmer and his wife happen by. "whats going on here?" the farmer ask's a bystander. "oh nothing, just a pig stuck in the sidewalk" the man replies. the farmer and his wife make their way thru the crowd. simultaineously small pig is free'd. they speed their way back home to the country where small pig is given all the mud he needs. "he sits down and sinks down into the good soft mud".i will go my whole life remembering this book as my dad read it to me and how i read it to my son's and thats what makes it such a treasured book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little masterpiece
_Small Pig_ is as good as the books in Lobel's Frog and Toad saga, which is high praise indeed. It's a story told with Zen-like simplicity and humor.Serene acceptance is the best way to handle life's annoyances, if you can manage it.Asked one time why so many of his characters seem to be neurotic, Lobel said:"They didn't start out that way but, if you talk in short, choppy sentences and repeat words a lot, you begin to sound neurotic quickly."If you have a small child, introduce him or her to the world of reading with this little masterpiece of children's literature. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars nice adventures
I don't know what it is about Frog and Toad that's so great. It's like every word they say is laid out so perfectly and the stories are always so simple to understand, and yet, so much fun for children of all ages.I honestly wonder if my interest in walking around searching for and collecting toads came from this book. It's certainly a possibility.Anyway, enjoy these books.Buy them for your children and I hope they experience the same amount of enjoyment that I once did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frog and Toad - Warm stories to snuggle with
My seven year old son is not nearly as thrilled with reading as his mother, but at last we have found a collection that he can't get enough of.Frog and Toad are the perfect bedtime characters. The stories are simple and sweet, and my son tells me that they make him feel "warm and cozy".The reading level is appropriate for him as a second grader. And even my four-year-old will settle in to listen to the latest tales of Frog and Toad. This is a must-have collection!
5-0 out of 5 stars Why do I love Frog and Toad?
Why do I love Frog and Toad? I'm not really sure. Not much really happens in these stories. The illustrations are beautiful but rather small. The eponymous friends carry on their friendship through mild misunderstandings and misadventures, always ready to forgive each other and forget. These gentle stories are among my favorite kids' books. I have fond memories of Frog and Toad from my childhood, and I never tire of re-reading them to my 4-year-old daughter. She seems to like them, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A visual delight!
Both of my children adored this book, and I recently bought it for a great niece. The illustrations are detailed, fascinating and very lovely. The simple narrative unites the book and makes it more interesting than many alphabet books. One thing I especially appreciated is that the final illustration showing the main character leaving Market Street after shopping at every booth really *does* have one of all 26 items in it. Children notice things like that and mine were very happy that they could work through that last picture and find everything from A to Z in it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Illustrations Make a Wonderful ABC Learner
I was quite surprised when I first opened this book. The title does not do justice to the fact that this is one of the best ABC books available. The illustrations are quite amazing, full of intricate details and laced with humor. My six year old already knows her ABCs well, but thoroughly enjoyed looking at this book and thought the illustrations were absurd and hilarious. Laughter rang from the back seat as she read. It goes beyond "A is for apple, D is for dog" and brings a fresh change of pace to ABC books bringing laughter and enjoyment to a child and awe and applause from a grown-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars On Market Street
I am a student of West Virginia State College, currently taking a class on Children's Literature.Mr. Samples (A Wonderful Teacher) has instructed us to review a Caldecott Honor book and write our thoughts on it.I read this book and was very pleased to see that it was not only well illustrated and would be enjoyed by children of all ages, but was also a great ABC book. The rhyming of the beginning and ending would make this a good memorizing/practice book for younger children learning the ABC's and the illustrations are funny (using each item as the person's outfit) so that the child reading this would stay interested and learn with fun!!I definitely recommend this book to all parents and teachers who are teaching a child the ABC's! ...
