Editorial Review

The evacuation of Jews from Nazi-held Denmark is one of the great untold stories of World War II. On September 29, 1943, word got out in Denmark that Jews were to be detained and then sent to the death camps. Within hours the Danish resistance, population and police arranged a small flotilla to herd 7,000 Jews to Sweden. Lois Lowry fictionalizes a true-story account to bring this courageous tale to life. She brings the experience to life through the eyes of 10-year-old Annemarie Johannesen, whose family harbors her best friend, Ellen Rosen, on the eve of the round-up and helps smuggles Ellen's family out of the country. 5-0 out of 5 stars Number the Stars
Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry is an incredible book. It's 1943 and World War 2 is taking place. Annemarie Johansen, a ten year old girl, and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of the happier times before war. But they can't do anything to stop it. There are German nazis across every street and they are taking the Jewish people to concentration Camps. Ellen is Jewish so Annemarie Johansen and her family just need to find a way how to help out. They pretend Ellen is Annemarie's sister and they also go the next day to where Annemarie's uncle lived, near the sea. One way or another they find a way how to escape from the soldiers and Annemarie's uncle took them to Sweeden, towards freedom, of course, until the war ended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking Story of Courage
I came across Numbering the Stars while clearing out a storeroom at the school where I teach.Since I had already read and reviewed The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Messenger by Lois Lowry, I took the book home and read it over the weekend.
4-0 out of 5 stars My review of Number the Stars
Number the Stars takes place during World War II and is about one family's struggle to protect the Jews from the Germans. The main character is Annemarie Johansen. Her best friend, Ellen Rosen, is Jewish. Annemarie and her family try to save Ellen's family and other Jews by smuggling them to Sweden. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So good it gave me goose-bumps
My 11 year old son and I listened to Gossamer driving to and from school. But then we couldn't bear to leave the story behind, so spent the rest of the afternoon huddled around the tape deck. What an enchanting coming of age story. Yes, there is darkness and violence, but such feeling of hope. I cried through the last chapter. Wow. This is an incredible book. And beautifully read by Ms Twomey. I was especially drawn to the idea that so much can be experienced through touch. Seems to me it's the sense most writers underplay. And the writing is so simple, yet so powerful. I would give Gossamer more than 5 stars if I could.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another GREAT Story
Lois Lowry has a unique gift for storytelling and this gift serves her well in her latest story Gossamer. This is the story of Littlest One, a dream-giver, and a boy who needs her healing touch. After reading this book I feel as if I have been a part of this story. That I was actually there huddled under the bed when the terrible Sinisteeds came. And I was with Thin Elderly when he wept in the attic. The characters in this book become real as I become engrossed in the story which balances between reality and the imaginary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gossamer
Lowry has crafted a tender story on the healing power of dreams and has given the reader a glimpse of the fantasy beings who bestow them.Littlest, inquisitive and enthusiastic, is training to become a dream giver.Littlest is mentored by Thin Elderly and together they work their magic on an abused foster child and his caretaker, a lonely old woman.Theygently touch objects belonging to the woman and the boy, gathering the memories they contain and bestowing them in dreams.Despite the best efforts of Littlest and Thin Elderly, both the boy and the his caretaker are beset by nightmares that are the work of the Sinisteeds, the counterparts of the dreamgivers.Littlest and Thin Elderly persevere, fighting the bad memories of abuse and love lost with tenderness and the knowledge that good memories carry the dreamers through rough patches.Readers will empathize with John as he flashbacks to episodes with his abusive father and battered mother and will cheer on Littlest, renamed Gossamer for her light touch, as she searches for the precise memory that will rescue John. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gooney Bird Greene Rocks for Third graders
Gooney Bird Greene is an excellent book to use for Third Grade!
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Beginning Readers
I'd give Gooney Bird Greene 4 stars because it's a sweet and funny book that teachers a lot to a young reader, but I wasn't incredibly impressed.Newton's third law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.Of course, that's a part of science, but action and reaction become a part of second grade when Gooney Bird Greene joins Watertower Elementary School and her new classmates, not to mention her teacher, Mrs. Pigeon, don't know how to react. You see, Gooney Bird quickly proves to be as strange as her name when she shows up on her first day at Watertower fabulously clad in pajamas, topped with a cowboy hat, claiming that she just moved there from China. Those are the actions, so what are her classmates' reactions? That's for you to find out by reading Gooney Bird Greene by Lois Lowry. Her laid back, perky personality and charisma eventually win over her classmates, though, and she soon becomes their favorite story teller. All of her stories are absolutely true, or so she claims, but her audience is more than a little skeptical when their titles include: How Gooney Bird Came From China on a Magic Carpet; The Prince, the Palace, and the Diamond Earrings; Why Gooney Bird Was Late for School Because She Was Directing a Symphony Orchestr;, and Beloved Catman Is Consumed by a Cow.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for my second grader!
This was a book recommended by my daughter's school librarian! We borrowed it on Friday and she finished reading it on the same day.She absolutely loved it!I read it after she read it and I LOVED it!It's great way to teach young children the art of telling stories and Gooney Bird Greene is such a FUN character! Each story she tells is absolutely true and they are absolutely fun stories!I have recommended this book to my daughter's other second grade friends and they all loved it! We enjoyed this book so much that I want to get a copy for my 3 year old so she can read it when she's old enough! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ALL ABOUT SAM REVEIW BY STARGIRL
This book is mainly about Sam Krupnik. He has a sister, Anastasia Krupnik, and a mom and dad. Sam is a decent enough little boy, but he doesn't behave totally well. Anastasia annoys her little brother and her little brother annoys her.His mom and dad take care of him well, but also get irritated easily. The book tells about his life from newborn to toddler. It was boring in some parts in my opinion, but good enough. It was funny too. I recommend this book to all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for Advanced elementary to early middle school
Advanced elementary to early middle school readers will relish Lois Lowry's Gooney Bird And The Room Mother telling of Gooney Bird Greene, who likes to be the center of attention most of the time. Her roles are changing as she enter second grade, leaving her in doubt about her future roles - and a mysterious Room Mother. Black and white drawings by Middy Thomas embellish the second Gooney Bird story, which needs no introduction to prove intriguing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gooney Bird Delights!
Gooney Bird Greene is a precocious second grader who loves to be "right smack in the middle of everything." Gooney has her own colorful and unusual sense of fashion, which includes wearing mismatched socks, elbow-length gloves, straw hats with flowers and silver wet-look ski pants. Her high-spirited personality stands out when she's telling her "absolutely true" stories, and she has no problem being the center of attention. This is a youngster with incredible self-esteem.

Editorial Review

Ages 8-12. The first and best book in the very popular series describes the ups and downs of a precocious ten-year-old girl. Anastasia loves keeping lists of important information in her green notebook; when she discovers that her mother is pregnant, she instantly adds two new items to her "things I hate" list: "My parents" and "babies."But as the year passes, Anastasia finds that the items on her lists keep moving around; by the time her baby brother is born, the only thing left to hate is liver. An unusually warm, insightful and original portrait of childhood and family life, this is a special and memorable story. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Anastasia Krupnik is a great book
(My mom, JaneLovesJesus, wouldn't let me review this before I'm done with it. I read it with her except the 11th chapter, but she also read it herself, so it's OK I didn't read the last chapter with her.) You can call me StoryMaker because that's my nickname and we got Anastasia Krupnik from the library as the hardcover edition. (Please note that I'm talking about hardcover. You might be viewing this review thru another editon. That's because amazon.com groups different editions together. The pictures are very different in different editions according to amazon.com. Please note!) It's a great story about a 10 year old girl who has a notebook with lots of stuff and she made a list of things she hates and things she loves in it. It shows you the lists at the end of each chapter. At the end she crosses out everything on her things I hate list except liver. She's a kid who dosen't like to eat liver. Anyways, it's a great story and is sad in all the chapters with her grandma but something I do not like is it dosen't follow a storyline very well. I mean, each chapter is like a new day. The storyline of this book is a storysquiggle. Other then that, I love this book a lot! Get it from the library. If you think it's great, buy it. It may not be the best for boys, but I am a girl so I don't care. Did I forget anything? Nah! I said the plot, I said it's great. What else is there to say? It's awful? Oh, c'mon, this is a positive review! It dosen't care if you don't like it. This ismy opinion! Nothing wrong with having a different opinion, but this is my review. Oh, and, the family in this story is having a baby and Anastasia picks out a name but I think she changes the name at the end. I'm not sure, but I think that's what that text means. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

One of the major moments in my childhood came when I read that Myron Krupnik kept his poetry manuscripts in the crisper drawer of the fridge so they wouldn't burn in a fire.My father (also a poet, also an English professor) did the exact same thing.I vaguely remember jumping up and down on my bed and wanting to move to Boston.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stay!Keepers Story
Stay Keepers Story was an AMAZING book. It is a great book for ages 10+. I really enjoyed it; my dad did too. I love this book because it is about a dog. I love dogs!! Keeper in this book is the narrator!! I thought that was pretty cool. The author that wrote this book really put a lot of thought into this novel. The dog in this book has a great sense of humor. In this book the dog Keeper changes his name 3 TIMES!! Lucky, Pal, and Keeper.Keeper firsts starts out with 3 other siblings, but they all were taken by a family. So Keeper was all alone.Keeper was always the best with his sister Whispy. So Keeper went to go find her, and his journey began.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stay Review by BcMiricle
I loved this book!!!! It was great with an extreme ending and an exciting base! You can't put it down but I had to put it down when my Mom said time for bed! When I finished it, I still wondered what happened next to Keeper. Stay is a story about a dog that tells his own story. Keeper gets seperated from his family and is owned by many friends. This dogs life is almost perfect except one thing. I recomend this book for ages 10 through adult. Read the book to see what happends to Keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stay! In the Life and Style of a Poetic Dog
This book was a very enjoyable pleasure for me to read because it is a funny fantasy about a poetic dog who had a variety of names such as Lucky, Pal, and then finally, Keeper.Keeper had many happy experiences and some not so happy with his companions. His care givers were Jack, Emily, Emily's mom, and Christopher (the photographer). All his life, no matter which of the people he was living with he always had a gift for poetry. He was fond of his sister, Wispy, and his tail.Although he was usually a happy, friendly canine, he had a rival who he despised. His rival's name was Scar.I was enthralled with this book because it leaves you hanging and with an idea - (Are dogs really this poetic and brilliant?). ... Editorial Review

"As soon as I finish this chocolate pudding, I'm going to jump out the window." Twelve-year-old Anastasia Krupnik has just discovered that her parents are planning a move to the suburbs. And she happens to know that people in the suburbs do not have meaningful paintings on their walls. They have paint-by-numbers pictures of kittens with big eyes playing with balls of yarn. And in the place of bookcases they have giant TV sets with bowls of fake fruit on top. One look at their future house in the suburbs, however, and Anastasia falls in love. It's not long before she's meeting the neighbors, including a handsome tennis player and a witch named Gertrude Stein. And it takes hardly any time at all before she's immersed in justthe kind of complicated messes that she seems to specialize in. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An overall good book leaves us wanting more
Anastasia Again is the sequel to Anastasia Krupnik, and the prequel to Anastasia, at this address, Anastasia at your service, etc. Anastasia Krupnik is upset when she learns she has to move with her parents to the suburbs. The only way she will accept the move is if she can live in a tower. When her parents FIND a house with a tower, she has no choice but to accept the move. With her faithful goldfish Frank, this book makes you want to run out and buy the next book. I give it 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a sweet story
This is one of those books that should win a Newbury Award Medal because of the character development. The friendship that Anastasia develops with the neighbor lady is wonderful, as well as Sam, but I will save that surprise for when you read the book. It has another one of Lois Lowry's beloved twists of plot that surprises you. Plus, it has all these great jokes about what suburbs are supposedly like. If you like Anastasia, you MUST pick up this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anastasia Again Book Reiview
Anastasia Again is about a girl that is in the 6th grade and moves to the suburbs. She moves because her apartment is getting too small since her mom is a painter and needs a studio and her dad is a writer and needs bookshelves. Anastasia is 12 and her brother Sam is still a baby. Her father Mr. Krupnik asks what everybody wants in their new house. Anastasia said, "how about a tower for my bedroom". She thought if she asked for something so outrageous she would not have to leave her home and her friends. To Anastasia's surprise, one day they went out to look at the new house and there was a tower on it where Anastasia's room was going to be. They moved in and Sam saw a lady next door and said that she looks like a witch. Anastasia is curious of what Sam saw because she did not believe him. She goes over to the neighbor's house to see if she really does look like a witch. Sam wants to go so they go over there with the excuse to get a pitcher cause their mom wants to make ice tea. So they go over but Sam hid behind a bush at the front door. You'll have to read the book to see what happens next. ... Read more

Its about a brother and sister that makes up a baseball team so they do not have to g o to there dad’s. They went last year and thought it was boring. They hated it.The siblings tried to explain to their mom that the reason they couldn’t go was because they had a baseball team and would rather stay and play then go to their dad’s.There was one problem.Their plan didn’t work.Their mom made them go to their dad’s anyway. It didn’t matter how much they begged, there was no way to get out of it.Was their summer ruined? Was it as boring as they expected? To find out, you’ll have to read Switcharound by Lois Lowry.

3-0 out of 5 stars not one of the better Anastasia books
This book, though it had some funny parts like all Anastasia books, was not as good as some of the other ones. Anastasia, though she seems really mature at times, in this book, seemed really immature. I mean, talking to her pretend analyst--come on! There were other parts that were immature, which I won't get into. She doesn't seem like a 13-year-old but more like a 10 or 11-year-old in parts. I am also tired of the racist views in these books, including this one. Anastasia doesn't believe a Chinese person can be named Stanley. She is so naive. Doesn't she know that Chinese Americans usually have American names? Also, some parts were just plain gross! But you will have to read it to find out. If you are a fan of Anastasia books, this should still be added to your collection. I recommend Anastasia At This Address, as that one is much better and even funnier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anastasia...funny girl that one
Anastasia is sure she is going insane so she buys a big statue of Freuds head and talks to it every day. This is a fantastic series, highly recommende buy moi!!(Now,what they decided to do with the gerbils at the end...was that really revenge on Nicky,or was it cruel to the gerbils!!)

4-0 out of 5 stars A tricky one
As everyone else here says, this is a very tragic story. While the book is beautifully written, and the characters very well-drawn, the ending is upsetting and could disturb younger readers. I read it when I was too young for it - I ended up with terrible nightmares and even now I would not read it again. The ending really is a hideously violent surprise. I recommend parents read this book before giving it to their children. Due to the subject matter this book really is best suited to older children/teens, but due to Lowry being so popular with younger children (for Sam, Anastasia etc) there is a high likelihood that some children will read 'Autumn Street' before they are emotionally ready.

4-0 out of 5 stars A touching book
I am a HUGE fan of Lois Lowry.I have read a lot of her books including her newest one 'Messenger'.The ending surprised me, and it freaked me out.(...)I'm sorry for sort of giving you an idea of the ending, but I couldn't sleep afterwards. It's pretty disturbing.Although the rest is great,I really don't like the ending.Fortunately, I got my liking back for Lois Lowry by reading 'Find a Stranger, Say Goodbye' that is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very touching story
During the war six-year-old Elizabeth goes with her mother and her sister Jessica to live with their grandfather. Elizabeth, meets, Tatie's, the cook's, grandson, Charles and they become best friends. Charles goes backto his family and comes back the next Christmas. During this visitsomething happens that Elizabeth will never forget. This is a story aboutbravery and couragegeousness, but mostly about friendship. Lowry reallymakes the charactors really come to life. Elizabeth and Charles are justlike real six-year-olds. This is really a very touching story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ANASTASIA..great series
ANASTASIA books were made in the 80's and I wish that I had known they existed,I would have loved them as a kid even more than I do now.It is a fun, interesting ,sometimes hilarious series based on a bright young girl and her loving family, the Krupnicks. This novel focuses on Anastasia as she is left to take care of her little brother by herself, for a while.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anastasia On Her Own
Anastasia On Her Own is a wonderful book. It starts out slow, but then it gets really exciting. With the help of her friends, Anastasia survives being 13. I couldn't put it down. You could read it in one sitting. This is one of the series of books about Anastasia by Lois Lowry. All of the Anastasia books are wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Anastasia book in the series

2-0 out of 5 stars My Review
Sam, a young child, is looking for a present for his mom.He decides that the is going to make his mom some perfume. The first thing that he has to find is a jar to put all the stuff in.He already has a problem finding that, so he has to ask his sister. Then he listens for his mom to say what kind of stuff she likes and then Sam goes and tries to find it.Sam puts everything from homemade chicken noodle soup to water from an aquarium. His sister is also trying to make a gift for their mom but she decided that she was going to write a poem.Every now and then she goes to Sam and reads it to him and Sam helps her change it around to make it sound better. One day while Sam was going to his neighbor's house he saw a box that had kittens in it.Sam looked at the kittens and then finally decided that he wanted one, but Sam didn't tell his parents that he got it.To keep it a secret Sam kept it in his room and didn't let anyone come in.Sam's dad and sister were all making homemade gifts because thats what Sam's mom had said that she wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hilarious and entertaining concoction!
I found "ATTABOY, SAM!" a great book! It was funny, entertaining and was written exactly how a 4-5 year old would see the world. Sam was hilarious, along with his preschool troupe. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh! Even if Sam's concoction(or perfume) didn't turn out great, it's funny how he goes about it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Purrrrr-fume!
I read the book Atta-Boy Sam. It's a story about a little boy named Sam who is 4 or 5 years old, and it's his mom's birthday. The store ran out of her favorite purfume Sam wants it to bethe best birthday ever so he decides to make a home made purfume!Sam pays extra attention to what she likes the smell of.Sam's invention starts to bubble, so Sam gets scared and hides it. POP! I think this is a good book because it's rather cute and funny, like when Sam puts chicken noodle soup in his invention. The 'Sam'and 'Anastasia' books I can never put down because they're just so interesting. ... Read Anastasia at Your Service to find out!I recommend this book to all readers, because it is interesting and funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute book
This is one of my all-time favorite Anastasia books. You start reading it thinking it is going to be boring, because, after all, what can be exciting about a book about helping an old lady?Well, you are in for a pleasant surprise because the humor and lesson Anastasia learns just draws you in.It is a really cute story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Summary and Rating
Section 1- Summary5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This was a hillarious comedy of a 4 year olds life. It starts out when his pre-school teacher announces that they will be having a future job day in the upcoming week. Sam decides that he will be a Zoo Keeper like Jake in his Zoo book. His mom makes him a Zoo keeper outfit that says Zooman Sam right on top. His sister Anastasia borrowed some baseball caps of animals from her un-boyfriend. His teacher and he decide that he will wear one cap every day. But when he used every cap in his bag except for the scary ones what will he do?!? Can Sam be a Zoo man forever!?!

3-0 out of 5 stars Read aloud for younger kids
Sam is a preschool boy who doesn't know how to dress for Future Jobs Day.He finally decides to dress like a zookeeper, his favorite character in his book. His mother stitches "Zooman Sam" on a one-piece pajama set of Sam's and his older sister borrows lots of caps with animal mascots for his hat.Since Sam only has time to show his class one hat, his teacher lets him continue wearing a different hat each day, and Sam works to decode the animal names on his hats.Nothing wrong with the story, but I have a hard time seeing how this story would appeal to "9-12 year olds," as the age recommendation above suggests. This book would be best used as a read-aloud for preschool through 2nd graders who are good listeners and don't require as many illustrations.(Another book of this type would be the Russell and Elisa books by Hoban.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars sassafras
This book is about a girl named Anastasia Krupnik. She has to choose a career then write a report about the career she chose. I really enjoyed this book beacause the 2 careers she picked is probably what I would pick when I grow up.This book was great!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring, lame, and just plain stupid book
This book got on my nerves. I absolutely hated it, and couldn't bare to read anymore about halfway through. If you want a horribly boring experience, go on, read it. If not, stay away from this book. Don't say I didn't warn you.

5-0 out of 5 stars ANASTASIA...Great Series!!!!!!!!!!!
This book is written in a fun, readable manner and is totally enjoyable.Though if I had to complain about something it is this....In any novel, even if the characters are having a hard time, you like to feel,"Yes I could like living in THEIR world for a while."..However,Anastasia's town seems boring, and her modelling school is utterly tacky and cheap and dull and, like, gave me the feeling of "Oh I would never go there." and a novel should always do the opposite to that. And they usually do.But all that aside,it was very good!!!!!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good book, but it needs to be more realistic!
I liked this book, it was very funny and interesting, but one thing. Anastasia is too naive and Sam is too smart! I'm an eleven year old and I know. In this book, Anastasia acts exactly the same as she did when she was ten in her first book. She also seems to still have the same intelligence, too. I am much smarter than her, and so is the dumbest kid in my class. Also, Sam is too smart! He is two or three in that book, and he has a complete vocabulary. Though there are many three year olds who can talk just as well, if Anastasia is very dumb and Sam is very smart, it just doesn't work out. But aside from that, this is a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read Book!!
Lois Lowry has written many great novels including Anastasia at ThisAddress. The main character is Anastasia; she is a spunky, city girl, from Boston, Massachusetts.Anastasia is 13 and wants a boyfriend.Anastasia does something very unusual to accomplish her goal.5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
This is a wonderful book.It is one of the very best in the Anastasia series. It is absolutely hilarious and really draws you in.It is such a page-turner.One thing that is great about it is a total twist of plot near the end which is a total surprise that made me laugh even more.Though I wouldn't advise lying in reply to a personal ad, it was all done in naivete and it actually teaches a moral.Find out what a rut Anastasia gets into for lies on top of lies. She really learns the consequence of her actions.A great read. ...
