3-0 out of 5 stars Not great.
Janet Lunn has won The Mark of Canadian Best Seller Award, and the CLA Children's Book of the Year for the Root Cellar.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Root Cellar
The Root Cellar is a book by Janet Lunn, an award winning author. Janet Lunn has really unique ideas, and I really like the fact that sheis Canadian and she incorporates some facts about her home in the book. She places the setting in Ontario, which is where she lives. In an interview, she tells the readers that her house is what inspired her to write the Root Cellar. In the novel, Rose, the main character, moves to her aunt and uncle's house when her grandmother dies. When Rose finds a root cellar, she goes in and when she comes back out, she finds out that she has traveled back to the time of the Civil War.Rose finds out from Susan, her friend from the 1860's, that her other friend, Will, has joined the war. When the war ends and Will still doesn't return home, Susan and Rose set out on a long and challenging journey to find him.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Root Cellar
Once again, Janet Lunn has written another award winning novel: The Root Cellar. This CLA children's book of the year circles around the similar themes Janet has written in the past --------- belonging. This book is also inspired by the old farmhouse she has lived in in Ontario. The Root cellar is abut a girl named Rose that moves in to live with her Aunt Nan and Uncle Bob when her grandmother dies.Later on, she travels in a time traveling root cellar back to the time of the Civil War.Soon, Rose finds out from her friend from the 1860's (civil war), Susan, that Will, her other friend has joined the war. When the war ends and Will doesn't return home, Susan and Rose set off to a hard and tough journey to find him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loyalist Historical Fiction
Phoebe Olcott's mother died when she was young and she had to look after herself and her father. He was a teacher in New Hampshire and in 1775 he went to war to fight for independence from England. He died and young Phoebe went to live with her relatives who were Loyalists. She is a timid girl but determined as she finds herself trying to complete a mission for her cousin who was caught and hung for being a Loyalist spy. She wants no part of this war that separates families and drives neighbours out of their homes with very little to survive on. 5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Twin Spell/Double Spell
I am so excited to finally find this book.It was one of my favorites when I was 12 and I have spent 20 years looking for it.It has been re-issued as "Double Spell".See other reviews for a good description of the plot - it has been so long since I've read it, I can't wait to get my copy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't despair, it is still in Print!
This is my favourite childhood book, and while searching for a new copy of it several years back (my copy no longer has it's cover) I discovered that it had been reprinted with another name. The new editions are under the title "Double Spell"! I know that this is the case in Canada, and that this title is listed on Amazon.ca, so I'm sure it's on .com as well. Hope I've helped someone else fine the magical novle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fond memories....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Japanese-Canadian Fantasy!
When twelve-year-old Sayuri Kato and her little brother Keiji enter the root cellar in their new home, they find themselves transported to Living Earth, a magical world in which humans are the storybook creatures, and kappas, shape-shifting foxes, onis, and tanukis are creatures of reality. When Keiji is lost, Sayuri must journey through this myth-inhabited land, and accompanied by her new friends Echo and Machigai she learns important lessons along the way about philosophical and moral balance. The arch-villain of the story is Great Uncle Mischief the fox, who calls himself the Patriarch. He has devoted himself to the acquisition of power, destroying Living Earth and its inhabitants in the process. He is not evil, in an absolute sense, although his actions most certainly are. The strong feminist and ecological themes of this fantasy are worked seemlessly into the excellent writing and storytelling. One of the strongest entries in Coteau's "In the Same Boat" multi-cultural series. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Silver Birch Nominee
"I Have Been in Danger" was not the most original story that I have ever read. However it gave very good safety tips and a very good idea of what it would be like to be lost in the mountains. On a scale of 1-10 I gaive this book and 8.The reason I did not make it higher is because of it's lack of originality in this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Escape Plans
"Escape Plans" is a rollicking ocean of a book. It is exciting and well-written, examing the many facets of the Cold War from the perspective of a Russian-Canadian family living in Ontario. The author does an excellent job of constructing her characters and keeping the plot fast-paced. At parts the story bogs down, but quickly gets back on its feet. Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sadly wanting
I hoped to find a good book for my young daughter that would treat the Holocaust in a compassionate and inclusive manner. This isn't the book. I read it first and ended up giving it away for a yard sale. I later found another book, called Hope's War, which was really good and which is now making the rounds of my daughter's grade school and early high school friends. She really liked the book and so did I. ... Read more
