5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely In the Top 5 of All Children's Books
Almost everyone else has said it already--this is as good a book as you can read to your kids. Not, contrary to what an isolated review suggested, stilted at all.Just beautifully evocative of a family living complete and joyful lives, with their ties to the land still unbroken.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching, beautiful, full of love
I love this book!I bought this book for my son (then 3) when I was expecting my daughter.Admittedly, this is MY favorite book.My son would much rather read something silly than poignant. But this book is GORGEOUS!The illustrations are achingly beautiful. The love in this multigenerational family leaps off the page. There is a home birth, love of the land/ nature/ farming, and sibling love. The boy in the story is taught by his mother, father, grandfather and grandmother about "all the places to love."The story closes with him teaching these things to his new sister.Every once in a while, my son asks me to choose the books I like best for our reading and I always choose this one.Don't get me wrong, he likes it too (he's now 5) he just doesn't usually choose it.You won't regret buying this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passing on the things we love
I am not only a Book junkie, I am a grandma who wants to pass on the Passion. I fell in love with this book not only because I grew up in rural Michigan, on a dairy farm, with my grandparents up the road. But because this book captures the love and family bond that I want to pass to my grandchildren. Mike Wimmer did an exceptional job of bringing this lovely story to life. I Dare youto read this out loud to any child you love .. and not shed a tear! ... Read more

Editorial Review

MacLachlan, author of Unclaimed Treasures, has written an affecting tale for children. In the late 19th century a widowed midwestern farmer with two children--Anna and Caleb--advertises for a wife. When Sarah arrives she is homesick for Maine, especially for the ocean which she misses greatly. The children fear that she will not stay, and when she goes off to town alone, young Caleb--whose mother died during childbirth--is stricken with the fear that she has gone for good. But she returns with colored pencils to illustrate for them the beauty of Maine, and to explain that, though she misses her home, "the truth of it is I would miss you more." The tale gently explores themes of abandonment, loss and love. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sarah, Plain and Tall
Sarah, Plain and Tall is a heartfelt story about a family who lost a mother and wife. Jacob, Caleb and Anna's father, must make the decision to place an ad for a wife and mother for the best for all of them.Sarah, a young lady from Maine, returns letters back and forth to the whole family getting to know them better. She decides to come down to the prairies of Kansas from the sea for a month to see if this is a life she could become accustomed to.When the children see the yellow bonnet coming down the road, excitement was in the air along with anticipation.Would she decide to stay and marry Jacob, or would this place be too small and too far away from the sea for Sarah.
5-0 out of 5 stars great great GREAT!
The book is about the Ann and Caleb's mom dies in her sleep after having Caleb. After a few years Jacob (the dad) writes an ad asking for a new wife. And Sarah answered back, and she answered all the questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caleb's Story
This book in the 'Sarah, Plain and Tall" series has the same brilliant ability to draw readers in as the original, this time through Caleb's eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching Story
Caleb's Story, the third of a series by Patricia MacLachlan, shows how a family can be brought closer together. Caleb, a teen coming of age, meets his grandpa who is sick. Taking place on the prairie this story show a struggle between generations. Read more to understand the struggles between the generations, and possibly solve some of your own.4-0 out of 5 stars Sarah, Plain and Tall and Skylark Sequel is Heartwarming
Caleb's Story picks up where Skylark and Sarah, Plain and Tall leave off. For the countless readers who fell in love with Sarah as she learned to be a mother to Anna and Caleb, and a helpmeet for Jacob, this book is a wonderful addition. For the reader who lacks "Sarah background," Sarah comes from Maine to a prairie farm after responding to an ad placed by Jacob, who is looking for a woman to replace his recently deceased wife. While he is not necessarily looking for romance, Sarah and Jacob ultimately fall in love, and their next years as a family is chronicled in the sequel, Skylark.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best new'dog' book for all ages ...
Along with Carl & Biscuit the dogs in this book are just too special to ignore.I currently work in the children's Dept. of a bookstore chain(& love dogs). When this title came in I had to look read it and make my co-workers look at it too. I have also noticed that it gets moved around quite a bit so people must be interested enough by the cover & subject to pick it up and look through it. When it comes out in 'paperback' it will fly off the shelves. It is just beautiful and so accurate for pups personalities.Love the 'poetry' rather than story line. I have told my people friends about what a cool book it is. It should be sold in pet stores & grooming shops and recommended by Veternarians etc.I'd like to see it sold in the 'pets' section of the store as well. A big THANK YOU to Patricia MacLachlan for this heartwarming collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must havefor dog loving parents and teachers!
The illustrations are both heartwarming and beautiful and capture the essence of each dog poem.Dog owners are sure to connect personality traits of their own pet to almost all of the poems. Each one, written in first person or, rather first dog.offers at least one craft element to support teaching young writers.Craft elements include font size, questioning, dialogue, use of space, voice of the poet, patterns in poetry and even a poem for two voices.I love it!The ONLY thing missing is a reference to the dog breeds illustrated. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dance dance wherever you may be
All right, class.Altogether now.How does one go about getting kids interested in historical fiction?Any ideas?I heard somebody mentioning starting the kids on that kind of thing early on.Very good! It's an easy enough task to read historical picture books to children before they can read on their own, certainly.Just load your bookshelves with some Patricia Polacco, some Patricia McKissack, and maybe a dash of Allan Say for good measure. The minute the children want to read their own books, however, you may find filling their historical fiction needs a bit trickier. If it isn't related to "The Time Warp Trio", parents often find their bookshelves sadly lacking in that whole early chapter book historical fiction genre. So what author exists to rescue you from this dire plight?Who else but Patricia MacLachlan, author of "Sarah, Plain and Tall"!The series that begin with this pleasantly slim novel has added yet another title to its mix."Grandfather's Dance" follows the Witting family's adventures as everyone prepares for Anna, narrator of the first book, and her wedding.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Dance
Cassie Witting has a little brother named John Jacob Witting, but everyone calls him "Jack," and he calls himself "Doggie." In the months before a big wedding, Cassie watches the relationship between her little brother and their grandfather. She is alternately amused and annoyed by Jack's constant aping of Grandfather's speech and movements. So is Grandfather.

5-0 out of 5 stars More about Sarah and her family
Hi, I'm Paulina and I'm one of Patricia's biggest fans.I read the book, Skylark. It started out as a story about family and life in the frontier land.A week had passed and there had been no rain.It was very hot, opening windows was no use.The cow had her calf and then the barn burned down, meanwhile Sarah's aunts had sent her a letter inviting her to come to Maine, papa wouldn't go because he wanted to take care of the land, so he sent Sarah and the children. After a month without papa everyone was getting homesick and missing him very much, finally they saw papa rushing toward them yelling "it rained!"Papa had come to take them all home.

3-0 out of 5 stars More perfect than the moon
This book was not my favorite book in the world but i definitely learned from it. I learned that people can change. I learned that you should't ddoubt someone when you don't know the details. I would recomend this book to people who like realistic books.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'More Perfect than the Moon' is a perfect read
Author Patricia MacLachlan, most famous for "Sarah, Plain and Tall," invites us back to re-visit the Witting family in "More Perfect than the Moon."Mother Sarah is pregnant in "More Perfect than the Moon," much to youngest daughter Cassie's chagrin.Cassie chronicles her feelings and emotions about the upcoming arrival of the 'terrible baby' in a private journal she keeps.Cassie's private journal entries are sometimes true happenings around the Witting farm.Other times, the entries are what Cassie wishes would happen.Either way, the entries had me smiling and laughing out loud.MacLachlan holds true to her typical writing style and shows us that change is inevitable and made bearable by the love of family.Another heart-warming, laugh-out-loud, easy read by MacLachlan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A STELLAR READING
Versatile and always impressive actress Glenn close surely merits all the accolades and awards she has received (4 Oscar nominations, 3 Tony Awards, 1 Emmy Award, and 3 Grammy nominations).Few will forget her over the top performance in Fatal Attraction then a remarkable switch of gears to 101 Dalmatians. She uses her considerable gifts to vivify the narrator in this, the fourth installment in the Sarah Plain and Tall stories.

1-0 out of 5 stars Depressing story for a child
I bought about 50 children's books online recently and 'What You Know First' is by far my least favorite. The story is depressing and the black and white pictures are dreary. I usually love all children's books, so I would not give a book 1 star unless I absolutely felt it was necessary. I would not purchase this book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars I haven't forgotten what I knew first
For any of you who have left home..what you knew first..this book will deeply touch you.As I read this in the bookstore, tears came to my eyes. It's a story of a little girl who struggles to understand why she and her family must leave the only place they know.Though change has its sadness, this book shows the sweetness of memories you take with you forever. This is a good book for a child going through such a change or for an adult who still recalls all those familiar things of home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, beautiful story of a child facing change
I love this book for the way the illustrations and story compliment each other so well. The story narrated by a small child facing the prospect of moving to a new home is achingly beautiful. You can feel the child's painand anxiety about moving to a new place and being afraid of forgetting theold place and the memories therein. The child tells about all the thingsshe will miss and then devises a plan to stay and not go with her familyand baby brother. It is a story for anyone who has ever had to face apainful change in his or her life.I could read it again and again. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet
Journey, by Patricia MacLachlan, is one of those books that can only be described as short but sweet. This 83 paged novel is jam-packed with deep meaning. Though, I thought it ended too quickly and the meaning was somewhat lost. 1-0 out of 5 stars The Worst
This book is the worst book i have ever read. It doesn't make any sense, and very hard to understand. I reccomend this book to no one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling !!
Journey comes from a disfunctional family. His mum left him and his older sister,Cat with his grandparents. His father left when he was not even born.Journey misses his mum and longs for her to come back.I feel pity for him as his parents dumped him when he was a boy. When I read this book,I was so angry with his mother that I could have beaten her up in real life. His grandfather takes many photos of them and the surroundings. So,when they are grownup, they can have something to remind themselves about the past.Journey's mum tore up all their photos of the past. What an irresponsible mum! I wish I could pound her to pieces like what she did to the photos.I must consider myself the most luckiest girl in the whole world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful story
Wanted to get this for my grandson as my husband and I have vision problems.Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written, realistic story
This is a very nicely written story about a boy and his grandfather, who is blind. It portrays a close, loving relationship between the two, and explains in a very simple and positive way how the grandfather perceives the world without his visual sense. The accompanying drawings are simple and artistic. It is so difficult to find realistic, beautiful books for children, but this one is absolutely wonderful.I give it my highest recommendation.

4-0 out of 5 stars A real lesson to be learned
This wonderful book about relying on your senses when you are blind demonstrates that blind people can lead a productive life.Grandpa shares his zest for life with his grandson, John.At first John does notunderstand how his grandpa is able to do all that he does.Grandpa shareshis secret. As a preservice teacher I've used this book to talk aboutaging and its effects with my students. We also talk about what we can doto help others who have disabilities. This is an excellent book to allowchildren to examine their thoughts on older people and disabilities. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A inspiring sad story.
when i read this book, I thought man how can Patricia Maclachlan write like this. It was an outstanding book. I finished it in a couple of days. I still pick it up and read it as a adult. I think this story inspires many familys that went through Larkin's problem. I recommend this book to people who want to read an excellent book and feel like you want to read it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book with everything wrapped together
This book is Amazing. I love the setting. When i first got the book i couldn't put it down. I finished it in 3 days. I would say this is a book for people who like adventoures, sad, happy, and exciting stories. The only bad part was when it got a little boring. But i kept reading. So buy or borrow this book and read it. I enjoyed it so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby
I just read the book Baby. It was very good in detial and scenery. Like when grandma has a pair of black underwear. She puts little shinny beads on them and she hasn't taken them off for ten months. I think I am most like Lalo because she is always curious about everything. There's a lot of funny parts and some boring parts too. I would recommend this book to everyone I know. I would give this a 5 stars. I say wait until it is your chance then grab your dreams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
If you liked any of Patricia MacLachlan's books, this one will satisfy you! It's about Emma, who is eight years old, whose father is an "Eyeball Doctor" and has to go to an "Eyeball Meeting" with Emma's mother, which means Emma and her teenage brother Zach's uncle and aunt have to come baby-sit them for a week. This week teaches Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Elliot about being parents, from divided grapefruits to "night rumbles", and it teaches Emma and Zach about "different spokes for different folks". I read this book when I was 11, but my sisters, ages 7 and 6, listened to it as a read aloud, so I really can recomend it to anyone!! Great book indeed!

3-0 out of 5 stars Patricia MacLachlan's Seven Kisses in a Row Makes a Sweet Children's Book
Emma, who's 8 years old, has woken up almost every morning of her life to 7 kisses in a row from each of her parents. But her father is an `eye doctor' and had to attend an `eye doctor conference', bringing her mother along. With their parents gone Emma and her brother are being taken care of by their Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Elliot. In this cute, 7 chapter story, Emma and Zachary have 5 days to teach their Aunt and Uncle how to be good parents.I would give this book 3 stars, and recommend it to any 7, 8, or 9 year old.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cute book!
This is a cute book. When Emma's parents go out of town to an "Eye Ball meeting" their aunt and uncle come to stay with them. While there the kids ( Emma and Zach ) teach their uncle and aunt how to be goodparents. The story is cute and the characters are believable. There arelots of words on the pages. The ending is endearing.I think kids between7-9 might enjoy this book. . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Dog on the Prairie
This is a lovely, lovely book that I hope you will not miss. Before the first page is even turned, this book has a couple of things going for it. It was selected as A Charlotte Zolotow Book and is in fact dedicated to that beloved and talented children's author. It was written by the Newbery Medal winning author of the beloved and moving Sara, Plain and Tall.Three Names is the name of a dog who wanders into the life of the author's great grandfather in his youth out on the prairie. They become the best of friends and the book traces their day to day, seasonal adventures out among the fields of prairie grass and wheat, paintbrush and bluegrass. The lyrical text transports us back to those days and we are given a clear window on the world of prairie life of a bygone era. Three Names goes to school with great-grandfather every day and in recounting the daily lives of the two friends this book paints a sunfilled picture of simple friendship that makes life all the more enjoyable. Alexander Pertzoff's beautiful watercolors are my favorite part of this wonderful book. Whether he has painted a dark and menacing tornado or the inside of a one room school house festooned with colorful paper chains for Christmas, he captures the ambiance and mood perfectly and transports us there. Three Names, a simple mixed-breed, plain brown dog with two white feet is painted so realistically, his joyful canine spirit captured so faithfully that you have to take a second look to make sure you didn't actually see his expressive tail wagging. Whether you choose it for a nostalgic slice of Americana or for a heart-warming dog story, I think you'll be well pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Actually should be Four Names!
But I won't tell you *why* the dog should actually be called Four Names! This is a peaceful story about a boy's grandfather and his life on the prairie around the turn of the century or earlier with his golden dog Three Names.Going to school in a one-room schoolhouse is described.Illustrated with lovely watercolors--nice technique, almost impressionist-looking.The illustrations are perfect for a picture book.Wholesome.The content seems very different from other books by MacLachlan. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Cassie Binegar-all right
This book is written by Patricia MacLachlan. This is the first one of her books that I have read that I have been disappointed in-all the rest of her books that I have read were amazing! I thought that it ended too soon and that the plot sort of weakened off at the end. This book is all right, but you'd be better off reading another one of MacLachlan's books.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Idea of Change.
In "Cassie Binegar," Cassie, the protagonist, did not like the idea of change. She wanted orderliness in her life and strived to achieve it.She eventually learned to view life through her family's eyes and learned a very valuable lesson; that things don't stay the same forever. I would definitely recommend this book for young adolescents. They will find it very easy to relate to the experiences in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful book
this is one of these books that you just have to read over the summer. there's something about the writing style that is both classic and highly orginal, and the story itself is very enjoyable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Okay!
I have seen better books that Patricia MacLachlan has written, but this book was okay. It's about a boy who was sent to his geat aunt and uncle. They are very strange. They sit on very tall trees, speak french to their chicken and sing to their pig who is pregnant. It was an okay book

5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur For The very First Time
"Arthur for the Very First Time" by Patricia Maclachlanis about a boy called Arther, and his adventures at his uncles andaunts house. He met a chicken called Pauline, a girl called Moira and a pig called Bernadette and Moira's dad Moreover. Once Arther lost Pauline the chicken but he and Moira accidentally took YoYo's goose when Pauline was sleeping in the tree outside Arther's window. one day Moira and Arther wanted to take care of Pauline when she was sick and uncle Wrisby gave them the toxic(the medicine)for Pauline. Arthur said to give it a try first so they both tasted it and said grapefruit, Moira had to go home to meet the social worker, Arther and Pauline decided to come with Moira, so they drank some of the toxic the way, they were drunk and didn't ever know it when they went to moreover's house. One day Arther and Moira built a pen for Bernadette, but she didn't like it, until one one stormy day Bernadette was nowhere to be found! Arther checked everywhere until the only place was the pen Arther and Moira Built for Bernadette. She was there all right, but she wasn't breathing! Arther rapped his coat around Bernadette until they got to the place the other pigs. I think this is a very excenticly interesting book, because there are funny things, adventures, friendship, and it's like a biography for the summer at his aunts and uncles house. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Kissing Book
When I was in 5th grade, my cronies and I discovered this book in our school library and quickly found the 'kissing scene.'The book became instantly popular to all the girls in our class after word got out.Asidefrom that, I have read this book many times since then and found it to bevery well written, and worthy of its award as Notable Book.I have beenmaking a list of favourite books I read as a little girl, and this is oneof the first on the list. And Since I was a complete tomboy at age 10,this book isn't just for sissies...it has humour, and a few suspensefulscenes (one resulting in physical injury...what more can you ask for?) ... 1-0 out of 5 stars PIECE OF JUNK

I think this book was good because I could understand the text and it was something that I could definitly relate to. I cannot say that it was my favorite book, but after the first 40 pages it definitly begins to have a plot-line. Though I do not think I would be able to read it again, it was fine the first few times. Her friends and her family are funny to hear about and Lucas seems like a great friend. Minna finds out things about herself that she did not know she had. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Sarah's at a new place!
In Sarah plain and Tall, I think the open prarie is the most important part of the setting.Reason being, where Sarah comes from, there's buildings, air pollution, roads, and it's crowded. All though, in a prarie, there is trees instead of buildings, fresh air instead of pollution, grass instead of roads, and all the space instead of it beingcrowded. I didn't really like the book because it's only 58 pages long. I'drecommend this to ages 6 through 10.

Editorial Review

With a stomachache in her head and a headache in her throat, not to mention a sore toe, Emily is definitely due for a sick day. Her work-at-home dad takes the day off to find her stuffed animals, put her hair in ponytails, search for the thermometer, and serve her broth with a plastic giraffe in it. Somehow, this ends up being a pretty fun day for Emily and her father, in spite of her having to "swallow up" and Father having to clean up. By the next day Emily is feeling well again--unfortunately, her faithful caregiver seems to have caught the bug now! Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple story of a young girl who has a sick day
Jane Duer illustrates Patricia MacLachlan's The Sick Day, a simple story of a young girl who has a sick day - her stomach aches and her throat feels sore. Good reading skills will lend to this easy story of a girl who involves her father in her day off, turning a sick day into something special after all. ... Read more
