Fun for kids and parents
I just purchased this book for my 4 year old son who is obsessed with skateboarding (but not allowed to have a skateboard yet) - he loves it!The terminology is fun and keeps us both laughing.My only wish is that the rhinos were wearing appropriate safety gear - although there is a disclaimer at the end saying that rhinos heads are hard and kids aren't so kids should wear helmets.Overall I would highly recommend this book, you won't be disappointed.

Inappropriate Content for Age Group
I bought this book for my two-year-old son who loves to watch skateboarders at our local park.While this book has fantastic illustrations, I feel that the written content is inappropriate for children of any age.I anticipated a nice story about Rhinos and their adventures in skateboarding.Instead, this book fosters the "teen punk" skateboard culture of questionable language and social skills.For example, there is one page in which the Rhinos are making fun of less talented skateboarders at a "geekfest".The book is littered with slang such as "throw down pole jams" and "sick flip tricks".As a mother who purchases books to encourage reading and learning, I find this book totally inappropriate for any age group.Our kids learn street language soon enough without seeing it in print.So, my son and I just look at the pictures!

A Sweet Read
What a wonderful picture book! This book will continue to delight children and the lucky adults who get to read along. The art is wonderful too. Lucky for us there's a sequel to this book.

fun for singing families
We had fun with this one.Our six-year-old became a downright diva with the porcupine's songs, and the four-year-old kept her eyes open for the little grasshopper buddy.My husband and I liked the puns.I think we'll look for more by this author.

The story is delightful and the concept sharp
Funny, punny author Lisa Wheeler is at it again in this follow up to her pun-filled "Sailor Moo" and " Wool Gathering" picture books. This time, a love-struck porcupine is (porcu)pining for a wife in this comic recasting of the "Froggy Went A'Courting" folk song. First Cushion (yes, as in pin cushion) has to suffer the indignity of being the least popular resident of a petting zoo, for obviously ouchy reasons. Then his lonesomeness is compounded each time he serenades a potential bride. The rabbits get hopping mad, the pigs grunt their disapproval, and the buck-toothed beaver gives him the brush off. But when a mysterious creature compliments Cushion 's beautiful singing and, though "DO NOT TOUCH" signs warn him to stay away, he is intrigued, particularly when she says her name is Barb, and she's got quills too. "You don't look like a pork or a pine!" says Barb. "You don't look like a hedge or a hog!" says Cushion. Of course the mismatched loners fall in love, otherwise -- as Wheeler writes, unable to resist one last pun -- "what would be the point of this whole story?" Although "Porcupining"'s simple prose text isn't as snappy or rich as the perfectly perfect satirical rhymes of "Sailor Moo," the story is delightful and the concept sharp, exhibiting plenty of prickly wit. ... HALL OF FAME INDUCTION
Robbyn Smith van Frankenhuyzen and Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen (along with Gijsbert's "Legend of" partner Kathy-Jo Wargin) have entered my picture book authors/illustrators Hall of Fame. With the great "Legend of" and animal adoption books they join such luminaries as Barbara Helen Berger, Tomie de Paola, Jon Scieszka, Lane Smith, and, the Grand Master--Dr. Seuss. The continuing quality of the Frankenhuyzen's and Mrs. Wargin's work stands up well against any of the other people currently in the hall.
Wonderful book for any nature loving family!
Saving Samantha is one of Sleeping Bear Press's best books to date. Nick and Robbyn have produced a spectacular and heart warming picture book in their latest joint endeavor. Saving Samantha tells their family's journey in nursing a fox kit back to health while the fox slowly reintroduces herself back into the wild. This is a wonderful book to share with your children. It will help show children how wild animals should be treated with care and respect. It is a nature lover's ideal book! This is a book that both adults and children will enjoy. The journalization is so honest (and humorsome at times- poor Igor) while the illustrations help show you how time passes by while Sam heals. It is simply a marvelous, enjoyable book! My personal favorite part was the relationship that Sam, the fox pup, develops with Myles, the family dog. It just goes to show that even though an animal may be of a different breed, that they can all live together and be friends. This is my new must read for all of my bookstore customers! ... Read more

The characters of this book were well developted.You could tell what George and Martha were like.The book shows how important a friend really is.Even thouhg you may get into fights, it's best to forgive.The book shows this idea through a couple of different situations.

mammalabilia
This is a good book of mammal poems. The poems are short, but also educational and funny. Included are: the aardvark, the bactrian camel, the fox, the coyote, the gorilla, the beaver, the zebra, the lynx, the ibex, the otter, the rhebok, the elephant, the mule, the tapir, the lemur, the giraffe, the hippopotamus, the wild boar, the bear, the porcupine and the tiger.

Wonderful - Even for an infant
My daughter is only 5 months old, however, the rhythm of the poems in Mammalabilia keeps her attention.We are able to read the whole book before she rolls away.She finds the large pictures to be captivating and "talks" right along with me as I read to her. I believe that this is a book she can grow with.What a wonderful way to introduct poetry to young children!

While the poems are fun and engaging, there is far less scientific information given than in some of his other works."The Beaver" is a brilliant four line (four hyphenated words) poem packed with information, while "The Aardvarks" relays nothing except some clever spellings.If you must pick only one Douglas Florian book, "Beast Feast" or "Insectlopedia" would be much better choices. ... This book was just as fun and humorous as the other George and Martha books.Just what we were hoping for and expecting.

Good Introduction to Bighorn Sheep - Beautiful Photography
We were doing some late spring climbing in Death Canyon. Bighorn sheep were rare enough in the Tetons in the late 1960s that park rangers asked us to report back if we encountered them. We saw no evidence of sheep. Thirty five years later my son observes bighorn sheep above him in in a narrow couloir in upper Targhee Canyon, slightly below the pass with Death Canyon. Casually mentioning this sighting to a Teton ranger, he learns that bighorn sheep are now frequently observed.Read more
