5-0 out of 5 stars Humphrey the lost whale
I think this book is good because it is a true story about a lost humpback whale that goes into the Sacramento River. I like this book because we are studying marine mammals in class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading Rainbow
I first saw this book on Reading Rainbow, one of my favorite PBS shows as a kid. The story fascinated me, and I'm glad I was able to get my hands on a copy. It's about a whale who can't seem to stay with his family (which all kids can identify with at one time or another), and how the community helps him find them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best whale "true story."
The kind of book you think of when you're looking for a good whale story.Lots of personality and drama, and a super read-aloud for kids even asyoung as 4.Another fun whale story is The Whale Comedian, which is morehumorous and whimsical, but, like Humphrey, shows what kids like most: howwe can be friends with these exciting sea creatures. ... Jay Stailey and Ruby Payne have created a great resource for dealing with a very tough topic.Poverty is all around us.I find it particularly helpful as a pastor to use it as a starter for conversations about poverty. The stories really make you think!I particularly like the discussionquestions at the end of each section. 4-0 out of 5 stars Frances Audio Collection
My 6 year old son loves the Francis stories, even though he is usually more attracted to stories like Henry Huggins, or Mouse Tales; etc. However, he was a bit put off by the change in narrators between the Francis audio collection and a different Francis tape and book. The audio collection employs an older English lady with a rather coarse voice for it's narration.
5-0 out of 5 stars Frances Rocks!!!!!!!!!
My four year old has loved the Frances books since she was two; this CD is absolutely perfect and she asks for it at least once a week, and finally we have a sort-of tune for all of wonderful Frances' songs. PS if you are a real Frances fan as a parent, check out Mr. Hoban's "Riddley Walker" adult novel. Trust me, you will love it, and in 10 or 15 years, your current Frances fan will too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be...but it's still good!
I was so thrilled to find this collection. As a little girl, I had the books along with the records. The records were great...especially when Frances would sing...and the background music and sound effects were magical. When I played this tape, I was disappointed. There is no music or sound effects...just a woman with an English accent that reads the story to you...and she reads very quickly. The songs are sung differently than they were on the records but the more and more I listen to this tape, the more I am just happy to have something that reminds me of my childhood.I am still searching for the original recordings though! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rikki-Tikki-Tavi
This is the story of the great war that Rikki-tikki-tavi fought single-handed, through the bath-rooms of the big bungalow in Segowlee cantonment...
5-0 out of 5 stars A young reader's must have
I loved this story as a child, and recently bought this for my daughter. It's been tough getting her to sleep since we began reading this together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rikki the valiant the true, tikki with eyeballs of flame
As a child, I grew up with Kipling stories. My mother would read me "Just So Stories" and selections from the surprisingly long and complex, "Jungle Book" when I was just a wee lass. And had this lush and lovely version of "Rikki-tikki-tavi" been available to me when I was a kid, I've little doubt that I'd have devoured it just as readily as I did tales like, "How the Elephant Got His Trunk".Though I missed out on "Rikki-tikki-tavi" the written tale, I did take great pleasure in the 1975 Chuck Jones animated (with voices by Orson Wells and June Foray) faithful film of the same story. For those of you eager to instill in your children a sharp jolt of Kipling to the veins, I suggest you start them out on "Rikki", both the film and this lovely picture book, then move on slowly to "Just So Stories" and finally, "The Jungle Book" (but not THAT film). Then, years later, when you're trying to get them to read "Stalkey and Company", you'll have already hooked 'em young.

5-0 out of 5 stars Out of this world!
This is art and one rarely comes across art that is this beautiful and this close to being relevant. It's hard to deny the randomness in the order with which thoughts, figures, questions and answers appear in this book but that's what makes it so much more enjoyable. The story seems to be powered by a secret source of energy that exists at the boundary between "real" and "imaginary." The authors frequently cross this boundary on either direction without missing a beat, reminding us how great it is to think freely. What's really great is that this story has no beginning and no end so you can really go back and read it over and over again. Just make sure you don't read it 12 times...
5-0 out of 5 stars Totally unexpected!
I bought this book yesterday and haven't stopped laughing. I work at a zoo and we just got Giraffes so I thought it might be educational. Boy was I right! It's the funniest book I've read in a long time. I highly reccommend it if you are wanting a good laugh or need to know how to make sandwiches for them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hippoes and Hummus Haters
Haggis-on-Whey's highly educational book on the mating season of hippoes totally rocks.I was so surprised by so many unknown facts. For instance, hippoes wear lipstick when it rains. And did you know that hippoes don't appreciate the efort of penguins in their making of the Cross Continential Railroad?Pig-heels are their favorite food. I was most startled by the picture of a hippo eating cinnimon apple sauce.I highly reccommend this book for squirel monkeys and Ted Nugent and scientists named BENNY. Rock on Madagascar!

Editorial Review

Like all best friends, George and Martha do everything together--go to the movies, play at the beach, and just hang around not doing much of anything. No matter that they happen to be gigantic hippopotami, they learn the same lessons humans do about the ups and downs of true friendship. George and Martha teach each other (and adoring readers) that even in a close friendship, privacy is important, practical jokes can sometimes backfire, and among other things, pouring split pea soup into your loafers to spare the chef's feelings is not the best laid plan.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We love George and Martha!
This book is wonderful because it contains ALL of the George and Martha stories. The stories are funny and sweet. We've given this book many times as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars hysterical, cute and witty collection of stories about two best friends...
This pair of large, friendly, well-dressed hippopotemi is a throwback to some of the happiest days of my childhood.Though, these stories are short and to-the-point, they actually carry powerful and compelling messages about friendship and life. This is evident in how these two large creatures treat and interact with one another. Not only are the pictures hysterical, the stories last with you for a lifetime.I am thinking, in particular, about "Split Pea Soup," the story about Martha and her obsession with preparing soup that George just doesn't want to eat anymore.I am sure this is a dilemma that people, young and old, can relate to!I am so glad that they put this collection together, with a forward by Maurice Sendak.I reccomend this to readers, young and old.

I've been using this book with my kindergarten and first grade to introduce text illustration. They absolutely love it.I get applause every time I read it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I loved this story. My third grade students enjoyed the playful letters between Emily and Mr. Blueberry. We are studying animals in science and they are doing a research project on an animal. We are modeling a writing project after the format of this book. They are writing the letters from both perspectives using the animal they are learning about. They are enjoying being the 'expert' on their animal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great set for kids!
This is a wonderful book set for children. It stirs the imagination and paints colorful pictures in the mind. The story of Shade Silverwing and his struggles is wonderful and does discribe several differant speicies of bats.At the end of each book the author tells about the bats that inspired him.He describes the entire world through sound (not colors). There are so many good points about this set and I hope that there are more coming!I highly recommend this to any parent that is trying to get their child into reading again. It is so loved that ToonDisney has made a series of it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book.
This is one of my favorite books, and I'm sure anyone would enjoy reading this wonderful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars SILVERWING
Silverwing was an excellent story. It was action packed, sad, surprising, and so much more. Out of all the books that I have read it would have to be on my top ten books, because I really like how the beginning of this book starts with just one lonely bat trying to find some food in the middle of the night. This book wanted me to read more from the very first page. I would love to read to sequel to this book called Sunwing. This book really caught my attention just from the cover. But over all this has got to be my favorite book my Kenneth Oppel by far. This book makes you feel like you are Shade the main character. When he is just flying around in the dark nighttime. Or when some of the bullies are making fun of him. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Taupe, Talpa, Mole...funny in any language!
While wandering through a bookstore in Italy, I found this title packaged with the little mole doll.Yes, he comes complete with (stuffed) poop on his head!Never having seen this book before, I mistook it for an odd hat! However, that changed quickly when I opened the book...I LOVE this book!It is even funnier to look at it in multiple languages since each translation imparts its own flavor... In Italian, the cow pie is "un 'immensa focaccia verdastra" and in French (I bought the book there, too), the bird lets go with a " petit laiteux pâté."In Italian, the rabbit lets go little pastas, while in French, it's "petits haricots" (little beans). Whatever language, this is just a funny, well done book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have, definately!
I first bought this book as a gift for a new born baby and this lead to a huge response from the parents! To be honest, everyone who saw and wondered through this little book was laughing very hard and started buying it as a gift as well (and for themselves). The story is so funny, the Mole is really cross for the situation he is in and the drawings are marvellous! Children love hearing about something this smelly and basic which they are trying to master and get out of their diapers, yet every grown-up tries to pretend they don't 'do it', so to speak. But if you really want to see a little toddler laughing really, REALLY hard: buy this book. I promise you'll love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of the Little Mole Who Went in Search of Whodunit
I thought this book was HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!My professor read it to us in one of my education classes and we all were laughing.I could see why some parents might get upset if I were to read it to their children in the classroom. However, I think it is a very appropriate book because it is an aspect of life that children always want to talk about and learn about.I could see myself using this in a classroom :)GREAT BOOK for ANY AGE!!!!!! ... BOY.that was one of the greatest books... until the end! Gosh! First griffin(shades son) is trying to find the tree of life to get back to his normal world, but theres this problem.!!!SPOILER WARNING!!!at the very end, griffin gets bitten by his fathers dead worst enemy and dies, then shade commits suicide!!!??? You heard me right, dead, but since its the underworld hes aliuve but still has a body to uh live in.Right?? I hate thAt part but its not the worst!then griffin and the bat he killed at the very beginning (luna) get his life force, and go back to theyre world, while dead shade, making a stupendously unsatisfying ending flys through the portal and gets back in the world as a sort of nothing that can feel what its like to be anything, but can NEVER COMMUNICATE to anyone(not even other spirits). sounds more like eternal torment than eternal paradise. At the end you can just "assume" that griffin married the bat who he killed!and luna married the bat that she strangled half the life out of(literally)because he killed her.I dont realy understand the happy ending in that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible ending.
I liked Silverwing & Sunwing, but this is just bad compared to them! This should have had Shade as the main character, and should not have had him die in the end!

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking action
After I finsihed reading this book it took me a while to adjust to what I read. When I was done I even cried a little.I can't even believe Oppel would have Shade die at the end.If he doesn't come out with a fourth book and have Shade come back to life I'm going to be furious!I highly recommend this book to anyone who loved the first two. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
We received I am a mannatee in a cherios cereal box and because both our children liked it so much decided to take a look at other books from John Lithgow. This one is also excellent reading even for the youngest due to the rythim of the story and the very detailed illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true child pleaser!
I don't know a single child under 5 that doesn't love listening to and reading this story!Adults will find themselves singing the tunes long after they listen to it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Song Sticks in My head
I love this book and the song that accompanies it.You cannot stop singing it in you head. What a great way for children to learn to "read" the book.My son "read" this book to me in a song.Absolutely fantabulous!!!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars SEVERAL BAD JOKES W/ ILLUSTRATIONS
THIS BOOK JUST SEEMS LIKE A JOKE BOOK & IT'S NOT FUNNY. I WAS EXTREMELY DISSAPOINTED, ESPECIALLY AFTER ALL THE GLOWING REVIEWS. 'THE TIGER WHO CAME TO TEA' OR 'I AM NOT SLEEPY & WILL NOT GO TO BED' ARE SO MUCH BETTER- TRY ONE OF THEM INSTEAD.

5-0 out of 5 stars George and Martha
George and Martha is as humorous as Pooh Bear getting stuck in a tree! First, Martha makes split pea soup for George, but George hates split pea soup, so he pours it in his shoes.Second, Martha catches him doing this. She tells him that she doesn't like split pea soup either. She just makes it because she thought George likes it! Third, Martha makes cookies, so everyone is happy! George and Martha is one of my favorite books... and I'm in sixth grade!

5-0 out of 5 stars God Save George and Martha!
These are great tales of friendship--even for beginners, like my 4 yr old preschool class. They love all the little stories. A few go over their heads, but they get the concept of the humor and companionship represented by these sweet, lovable, sometimes mischevious and selfish hippos. I've tried reading them the other George and Martha books, but this is their favorite. Gosh, thank God for James Marshall and his inventions! Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite baby gift.
I just love ALL the books in this series. My children just loved them when they were little, and if you've ever had babies you know how valuable a good book is -- you get to sit down for a while! They were fun for me to read and really fun for them to explore. In fact, I've already packed them away in their hope chests for when they grow up and have children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hopefully the lion won't got bald from all of the touching..
My 4-month-old loves this book. She expecially loves the lion's long fur.She grabs it and will hold on for a long time.Needless to say, we spend most of our time on the lion page! But the other animals are neat too; a bumpy lizard, a smooth dolphin, a frog with sticky pads on its fingers, etc. This is a nice book to share with your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves this book!
This book has the greatest variety of different touch sensations that I have seen anywhere. My 2 year old son received this for Christmas last year and it has been his favorite. The sticky tree frog was the best page for him.It did lose the stickiness quickly, but I found an adhesive at a craft store that was specifically for tackiness.I just put it on the spots whenever they wear out and then we have weeks of fun again. ... My son got this for his second birthday and we love it.It's such a sweet story and the illustrations are great! It's not really long which is great for us becuase we have trouble getting him to sit still for very long, but it's also not too short either.Get this book for your toddler!
