5-0 out of 5 stars Magical
Reading over previous reviews, I am glad there are others who feel the same way as I do about this book. I read it as a child but when I recently recalled it, I could not remember the title and searched in vain for some time for books on hedgehogs and gardens! I don't know how I finally found it but I'm so glad I did. I purchased a copy immediately. I too used to pore over the map of the garden and wished I was there. It's a lovely, timeless book with fantastic illustrations and a sweet story line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank goodness this was reissued.
I remembered this book ever since my daughter used to get it out of the library. For years it was out of print, but luckily someone decided to put it back into publication.5-0 out of 5 stars I'm soo excited
I've never forgotten this book, I loved it as a little girl and I just got a new copy of it. This is genuinely a delightful book and so delightful for kids. I read it over and over again.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun book!
Morris meets a cow and a deer and tells them that they are a moose just like him. Of course the cow insists she is a cow, and now the deer tells Morris he is a deer.Oh my! You have to keep reading to find out who wins this arguement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Debunks some of the myths about wolves
Even though nearly everyone has a close association with domesticated wolves, there is a common and unwarranted hysteria about them. This unwarranted thought process has led to them being reviled by many and hunted to near extinction. Plans by wildlife managers to re-introduce them into places like Yellowstone Park have met with strong and at times irrational resistance. This book is designed to set the record straight and to show wolves as they truly are.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really good short last minute book!!
This book is really good. There are really big pictures that give you an image of what they are saying. The words are really big which makes it easy to read.Seymoue Simon talks about the relationship between humans and wolves. He talkes all about wolves.I think everyone should read this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture book
This book is filled with great pictures for kids just reading to too young to read for themselves. The story is told through the pictures, so it is fun and easy for them to follow along. Our son really loves us to read it to him, and I highly recommend it as a first book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making the hippo happy -- and kids too
Describing this book is going to take more words than are in it, all of which more or less rhyme with "rhino." And that's good, because there aren't many books that manage to be uncomplicated and hilarious at the same time.
5-0 out of 5 stars A children's book that makes kids really sit up and take notice
Newman's second book is a gem! As with his first, Reginald, he illustrates with an incomparable talent.Hippo, however, is a very special addition to any child's collection.Readers actually have to look closely at the characters' facial expressions and body language in order to tell the story. What a refreshing idea!Kids are not spoon fed ideas or a story with this book; they must create the story themselves. What is NOT said is what is so special about this book.In an age of too much stimuli and information, this is truly a very sophisticated concept and great way for kids to slow down and really read a book, each reading bearing new discoveries and subtleties.Great book! ... This book is as good as the first one, and is as enjoyable as the first as well. But, don't read Firewing, you'll hate it. I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST books I've ever read
Sunwing was one of the BEST books I've EVER read! It has lots of fiction in it but, it also has a large amount of true facts in it also. I truly reomend this book. And it has a bunch of action and adventure in it. And I think people who like animals such as, bats, mice, owls etc. will LOVE this book completley.

Editorial Review

Jane Goodall might be a household name for most grownups, thanks to herpioneering work with chimpanzees and more recent efforts at habitatpreservation. But many kids don't know the Goodall story and will love thischance to hit the ground in Tanzania and learn about the remarkable scientistand her beloved chimp friends. With dozens of vintage photographs, Goodallrecounts her early research in Gombe National Park, including a recap of herchildhood and how she came to know Louis Leakey and first enter the bush. Withclear and careful prose, Goodall explains her findings about chimp communitiesand communication, the role of hierarchies, and what sort of threats chimpanzeesface today. Best of all, Goodall's account always keeps curious young readers inmind, even relating some of her mistakes, such as when she became too close toher subjects and interfered with her own research.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jane Goodall tells about her chimpanzees to a new generation
My father subscribed to both "National Geographic Magazine" and their related series of books, the most memorable of which was about Jane Goodall's study of chimpanzees in Africa. The story of her work and the photographs of Fifi, Flo, Flint, Gremlin, David Greybeard and the rest were so enthralling. Many of those photographs, such as the one of infant Flint watching his mother Flo fish for termites and showing that man is not the only tool-using animal, are collected in "The Chimpanzees I Love: Saving Their World and Ours," which Goodall uses to introduce her exciting work to a new generation of young readers.5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful woman, extraordinary book

5-0 out of 5 stars enjoyed the book
I just discovered this delightful book.I find it ironic to read comments about burros being destructive......perhaps we humans ought to look in the mirror. We have been far more destructive to this national treasure than any burro.

4-0 out of 5 stars His Free Spirit Haunts the Canyon
Set in the Grand Canyon during Teddy Roosevelt's presidency this charming tale introduces readers to an unlikely animal protagonist: a wild burro who lives alone, but has been partially tamed by kind men.Rescued first by the Old Timer, then from a cougar's wounds by the North Rim's resident lion-killer, Brighty experiences the gamut of human behavior toward animals and each other: from the absurd, the selfish, the ambitious, and even the criminal. As the only witness to the evil schemes of a thieving murderer, Brighty relies on his own natural instincts which warn him about vicious Jake Irons.
4-0 out of 5 stars Times change, spirit endures
Marguerite Henry's charming story of a burro in the Grand Canyon during Teddy Roosevelt's time is still an informative, but fictional, introduction to the Canyon. As with most of her wonderful books, the bones of the story are true but the flesh is fiction. That's ok, because I don't think she ever represented them otherwise. The drawings by Wesley Dennis remain spirited and captivating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mahnomen, Minnesota Third Graders
This book was very interesting. Our class read this together. We learned that mammoths are extinct and that hunters used their bones and furs to survive. Aliki has a lot of talent for writing and illustrating. We recommend this book and his book called "Fossils".

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful illustrations, clear text
This book encompasses man as hunter, diversity of species, extinction, scientific inquiry --while being firmly grounded and tangible. The phrases are broken up on the page the same way that I pace the story when I read aloud. The explanations and transitions are clear and logical (except the second page which abruptly mentions the dinosaurs and then bounces back to the Ice Age again.) Wonderful book for curious minds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting children's book!
This book is utterly charming!I have to admit, I bought it for our toddler because I fell in love with the drawings and wanted to own a copy. The book tells the story of a little groundhog who learns all about growing his own food from his mentor, a squirrel. The story takes us through the whole year, and Ms. Cherry's illustrations of animals and plants are wonderful! We have a small vegetable garden every year, and I believe my son will know more of what goes on in the garden this year. The book will also appeal to an older child, as it gets into things like pollination, but my son loves this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm picturebook tale of animal friends
Lynne Cherry's How Groundhogs Garden Grew may require parental assistance but kids with some prior picturebook skills will relish this story of a little groundhog who loves to eat the vegetables in his neighbor's garden. The cycle of a gardening year is told within the structure of a warm picturebook tale of animal friends, and the drawings are especially engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to get kids interested in gardening
My three year old and I are planning a garden and this book has been an excellent companion to the process.Cherry does a great job of explaining how to create a garden through this story. In it Squirrel teaches Groundhog how to grow his own vegetables so he has things to eat.Cherry also includes a note to parents at the end that gives website information for more on gardening with children. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars DIFFICULT TO FIND A RHYTHM
I think this is one of the poorest written children's books I have ever read. The pacing is difficult and therefore there is no rhythm. The author chooses to insert rhyme with no "rhyme or reason", and uses ridiculous font changes, bold facing, sizing, wavy characters etc. with no purpose. My six year old twins have asked to read it once or twice but it just doesn't cut it.Plus, it's overly long.Do not recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Way to Introduce a Skill
My 2nd grade class loved this moose, and thought the story was quite funny.Whenever possible I use a story to introduce reading strategies or skills. This story was used to introduce the prefix un-. I debated over a 4 star or 5 star rating. I decided on a 5 star because the humor was appealing to my second grade students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wild book on Wild Whales
This review is by my 10 year old son. This book has moreinformation on Whales than other books I have read. First they go on abus tour. Then they turn the bus into a sub. Ms. Frizzle, Has four mini-subs. Two kids went in each sub. Ms. Frizzle, stayed in the bus with the Captain Gil. Then the adventure begins. I enjoyed this book very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic

5-0 out of 5 stars Will result in lots of kisses!!!
My 2 year old simply adores this book. The illustrations are glorious, with many different animals in brilliant hues. What makes this book a favorite is that most pages involve a different kind of "kiss" ("A morning kiss is full of sun and wishes for the day to come") and means you can bestow all of these different kisses on your little kissaroo. Basically, it's a GREAT excuse to give multiple kisses to your child (without he/she pulling away), and they're actually returned!

5-0 out of 5 stars My little kissaroo loves this book
This book has so many elements children love:pictures of animals, a birthday party, a birthday cake (my 2-yr-old loves pictures of birthday cakes!), kisses, friends, etc.It tells children about different kinds of kisses (morning kisses, goodbye kisses, etc), and it has cute illustrations to go with it.The cute illustrations have details that my daughter loves to point out and name, and the colors are good.We like this book and recommend it to others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Martha & George: Literary Classics
Cute without being lightweight, educational with being overly didactic--James Marshall pulls it off perfectly in his George & Martha series.Buy a copy (or five!) now; you won't regret it!
5-0 out of 5 stars George and Martha really Are two good friends!
What can one say about George. Sensative and impish. Martha is just toocool for words. She can give heavy guilt without saying a word. ... Read more
