4-0 out of 5 stars Great light-hearted humor for early readers (and younger)
My son could not stop laughing when I first read him this book, and he requested it many times after that.Morris (the moose) can never quite getthings right, and Boris (the bear) becomes quite exasperated trying tocorrect him.By the end of the book, Boris is pursuing Morris all over thecircus tent, much to the delight of the crowd - and the reader.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ereth's Birthday
By Jamie Age 9
5-0 out of 5 stars Porcupine
Erethizon Dorsatum - better known as Ereth, the self-centered, foul-tempered old porcupine - is having a birthday. And he fully expects his best friend Poppy, a deer mouse, to help him celebrate in a grand manner. But Poppy has gone off somewhere with her husband, Rye, and it appears she has forgotten all about it. "Belching Beavers," says Ereth, "I am not angry!" (Though, perhaps he is - and more than just a little.)
5-0 out of 5 stars "Oh my gosh, Ereth's Biryhday is worth a Birthday Present!"
I am the reviwer of Chicago and Alice and Wonderalnd. Ereth's Birthday shocked my life! It's comedy, song, action, drama, and sandness! I loved this book and you will to! There is only one bad scary part for some children, a mother wolf dies in a claw trap, and there is a picture with blood. But, other than that, the book is fine! ... Read more

This is a terrific book, and not just for Halloween. The story of Gilbert the opossum and his mishaps was cute enough to reread several hundred times.I know this because my 3-year-old fell in love with Gilbert and Lola and we're still reading the book in May.I'm looking forward to reading deGroat's other Gilbert books, but it took me a long time to find them online. If you're looking for more Gilbert books, here's the list: Roses Are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink (1996), Happy Birthday to You, You Belong in a Zoo (1999), Jingle Bells, Homework Smells (2000), We Gather Together...Now Please Get Lost! 5-0 out of 5 stars The expanse of Love shared with children
When I first picked up this book, I was skeptical.Like most parents, I figured my 2 1/2 year old would tire of this book easily. But as I read it, the feelings of love that I have for my own two sons came to mind.I use it to teach a lesson about Love.As a mother, I never run out of kisses, hugs, affection--Love--for my two sons (or anyone else in our lives), but rather there is enough for all.I think that's a great lesson for kids to learn: that sharing is not competitive and there is room for all.I adore this book and my littlest one insists that I kiss his hand every night before he cuddles up with his bear. It's a very beautiful lesson very gracefully presented.

1-0 out of 5 stars poor story line, negative positioning, erroneous detail
The book is not fun or a joy to read, nor even sweet. As a parent I would suggest that this book only serves to promote feelings of neglect, rather than helping to resolve them.As for the story, there is hardly one here.We read many books to our children---I tried to stick this one out, but it is boring and dull, and by pre-supposing a problem, may even cause one.I couldn't read further having read "every night, just before the sun goes down, it reaches out its rays and touches every star in the universe".What utter tripe.Children are smart and reasoning people, to cloud their interpretation of the Universe around them with this rubbish is educationaly dangerous.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for a child with a new sibling
My 2 1/2 year old son received this as a Christmas gift and he loves to readit over and over.He has a new brother, so he relates to the main character in this book. The mother raccoon very tenderly and lovingly handles the sad jealousy/resentment that Chester feels toward his little brother.THe illustrations are also captivating and peaceful, and they contribute to the gentle feeling that you get from the text of this book.My son's reaction to this book was so positive that I am buying two more copies today to give as gifts to other new big siblings. It is definitely the best "big sibling" book that I have read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Boys love Frances too!
I can't help but notice all the reviews that say Frances is for girls. Boys enjoy this smart and spunky little badger, too! Her quirks and problems, as well as her creative solutions and her wise parents, are universally delightful for all children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous story for children
This is an adorable story and Frances comes up with a clever way to solve the problem of being taken advantage of by a friend. The book was written in 1970 so the prices of tea sets and candy have gone up, but it's still fun.And $2.17 is still a whole lot of money to a little girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finest I Can Read Book Ever
Despite its unlikely-looking cover, this is perhaps the finest I Can Read Book ever written. I had no idea it was a treasure when one of the kids grabbed it off the shelf at the local library. Written by Russell Hoban and illustrated by Lillian Hoban, it hilariously tells the story of a sweet and trusting little racoon who keeps getting the short end of the stick from a certain playmate. 5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous for Easter basket
I bought this last Easter as an alternative to the "bunny stories". My 2 year old picks it out of the bookcase every day. She and my 4 year old love the rhyming text. I love the fact that they can not only say oviparous but thanks to Ruth Heller they understand what it means. The illustrations could stand alone in a picture book. They are fantastic! 5-0 out of 5 stars All You Ever WantedTo Know About Moose
Who knew I would be looking for information about moose? Then I was traveling to Maine and wanted to know all about them. Adult or child, this is the book to start with. Simple, basic chapters explain the strange appearance of the moose, their habits, their habitat, and their social customs. Grand, solitary creatures, members of the deer family, they are actually making a comeback now, particularly in the northern tier of states. The pictures accompanying each little chapter are breathtaking, magnificent and appealing. The text is completely lucid, easy enough for a child to read, but packed with enough interesting information to satisfy an adult's curiosity. (Well, mine, anyway). If you are headed for moose country (or just interested in animals) I recommend this one highly!

I own "walking with prehistoric beasts" and this book goes further in depth on some of the animal shown in the dvd.

Though it is definitely a book for young readers the illustrations are a pleasure to peruse even for those who are no longer so young.

4-0 out of 5 stars Splendid resource for young learners
Gorgeous, realistic illustrations; a fact box giving the beasties' vital stats, an overlay of a human silhouette for size comparison, and a brief but nuggetty article on each creature. There are also articles on the prevailing taxonomic groupings of mammals, and how we know what we know about their appearance and behavior. What's not to love?Any parents hoping to put solid paleontology information in the hands of their kids won't go wrong with this. ... Editorial Review

The three-toed sloth of the Amazon rain forest is very, very slow. "Whyare you so slow?" the howler monkey asks. But the sloth doesn't answer. Hedoesn't respond when the caiman asks why he's so quiet, either--or when theanteater asks why he's so boring. He is only moved to speak when the jaguar askshim why he's so lazy. After thinking long and hard (as sloths tend to do), hebegins to elaborate on his many slothful qualities: unflappable, lethargic, butnot lazy. "That's just how I am. I like to do things slowly, slowly, slowly."This simple introduction to the joys of sloth (and sloths) may be the perfectbook for bedtime--parents and children alike will enjoy learning in zoologistJane Goodall's foreword that sloths sleep 15 to 19 hours a day! The beautifultapirs, tree frogs, and birds of the Amazon that adorn Eric Carle's cut-papercollage, color-drenched pages are identified at the close of this lush, oversized picture book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for young and old
This is one of my favorite books to read to my daughter at night, and it is one of her faves as well. The art and prose are beautiful, and whether or not the child understands all of the words is beside the point. It is great for getting the little one to slow down her engine and appreciate those who may not move at the same speed.Drawing on the biblical standpoint of sloth as one of the deadly sins, the other creatures ridicule the sloth for being so lazy. Here Carle gets us to appreciate the great virtue ofbeing, well, "slothful."In this fast-moving and chaotic world (which greatly affects our kids whether we care to admit it or not)the sloth can teach us a lot through his contemplative and deliberate philosophy of life.I strongly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe more appreciated by adults than by children
The book is absolutly beautiful! However, it leaves some kids lost towards the end with long sentences and a few tricky words that they don't understand (such as "lackadaisical").
4-0 out of 5 stars Quick quick, slow slow
Let's say you have a preschool aged child that's a bit slower than his/her peers.Let's say you've read this child "Leo the Late Bloomer" umpteen bazillion times, but it just isn't quite the story you've been looking for.In such a case as this, "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly", Said the Sloth may be the book for you.Now let's say that instead you have a child that enjoys picture books about nature.Let's say this child loves books that present and define the names of a variety of different animals. In such a case as this, "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly", Said the Sloth may be the book for you. Finally, let's say you have a child."Slowly, Slowly, Slowly", Said the Sloth may be the book for you.

This book, subtitled, "Five Stories About Two Best Friends," follows George and Martha, two hippopotami, through stories called "The Tightrope," "The Diary," "The Icky Story," "The Big Scare," and "The Amusement Park."The stories follow a day in the life of George and Martha and remind us how powerful friendship is and that being a good friend takes effort.Specifically, George and Martha learn the importance of unconditional support, respect for privacy, and consideration of others' feelings and also discover that practical jokes have consequences. While each story can be read separately, the final stories blend together with a surprise ending. Each story is told in five pages or less and the text is very easy for beginning readers, with common words, short sentences, fewer than ten lines per page, and large serif type.More advanced readers will continue to remain challenged by some longer words.Although the stories are brief and the language simple, Marshall uses the rhythm and phrasing of the text to create a strong emotional response and sophisticated humor. With understated narration punctuated by short (often terse) snippets of dialog, the stories are meant to be read slowly and savored, with pauses for giggles and snickering. The overall effect is dramatic, with suspenseful moments at the end of most pages. Each page of text is accompanied by an illustration and each story, as well as the book as a whole, is introduced by an illustrated, hand-lettered title page. The illustrations are cartoonish black-line drawings filled in with pink, yellow, green, and orange, with George and Martha in appropriately weighty masses of gray. The texture of the brush strokes and pencil lines is visible, emphasizing the hand-craftedness of the drawings. Both children and adults will enjoy the sly tone and touching themes of the stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL - A biased review
A wonderful book, both the pictures and words, and it really informs youabout lots of birds.A sense of adventure that's mixed with suspense, thejoy and the fun of the book is intense. The story is brilliant, thedrawings sublime, and they manage to carry it off all in rhyme. So buy it,enjoy it, it's full of surprise, and not to forget, it's got googly eyes. Now the author's my brother, I have to confess, but that won't mean thatyou'll like the book any less.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love and Appreciation
Teachers might be interested in using this book to help children identify with building relationships among fellow students. The book would help the students to understand that every student has positive qualities tocontribute to the classroom. It teaches the principal of caring for oneanother. It also teaches unity and loyalty among a group.

1-0 out of 5 stars More like "Helping Badger Overcome Depression"
I was surprised to see this book so breezily reviewed.I myself found it disturbing. There are lots of good books around that deal with bad moods--"Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Really BadDay" and "Today I Feel Silly & Other Moods That Make MyDay" come to mind. This book goes way beyond moodiness and knocks onthe door of clinical depression.First, the animals find Badger sitting inhis chair in the dark. When they switch on the light, Badger snaps at themto turn it off and leave him be.The other animals leave, but Mole isworried about Badger so he stays and cleans up the place a bit. Badgereventually speaks: "I'm sorry about this. 'Spect I'll get over it. But right now, I'm just no good, you know.No good for anything." Mole tells him they'll "just wait".Eventually the animals calla doctor.Badger refuses to see her and sends Mole out to get rid of herand the other animals trying to help:"Close the curtains," hebegged Mole."Keep them away."Then we have a scene where Molewatches Badger "staring and dozing and turning heavily in hischair."YIKES! And then, just when you're sure Mole is going to becalling the suicide hotline, things turn rosy and child-appropriate again. Mole comes up with the idea of an Awards Ceremony (this causes Badger'seyes to move "sharply for the first time in days").Badger andall the other animals attend.Badger wins all sorts of awards for being agood person/badger.At last he feels "appreciated" and is happy. Everyone dances.I was confused (and creeped out).My child wasconfused:"How come he wants to sit in the dark?...How come hedoesn't want the doctor to help him?...Doesn't he like the other animalsanymore?...Does he like them better now that they had a party forhim?"If this had been a book to help children understanddepression--a book with an appropriate resolution and ending--it would havebeen fine.If this had been a book about a badger who was feeling glum andunappreciated, who was then cheered up by an awards ceremony, it would havebeen fine. But this book is a bizarre marriage of the two and it is AWFUL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Publishers Weekly gives BADGER a starred review
*When Badger acts crabby and sad one day, it takes everyone by surprise:"But Badger's NEVER in a bad mood," his friends say. Hoping to cheer him up, Mole, Squirrel and Rabbit pay Badger a visit but they are met with grumpy replies, and subsequent well-wishers are turned away. Mole assures Badger that everyone will just wait until he feels better. In the meantime, Mole devises an ingenious plan to let Badger know how much he is loved and appreciated, and soon Badger is back to his old self. Oram's friendly woodland community reinforces a message that bears repeating. Her characters are expressive and concerned without being sappy, and her story makes room for throwaway jokes (Miss Snail turns out to be fond of slow dancing, while Frog is known for his gallant courting). Varley's (BADGER'S PARTING GIFTS) breezy ink-and-watercolor paintings, rendered ina pale, earthy palette, create a convincing whole word for Oram's sweet animals. Smartly clad in their timeless Sunday best, they exude charm and personality. Their cozy environs, like the story, make readers utterly welcome. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book so, so much!
I love this book so, so much because it has a map. I learned that he swims from the warm water to the cold water. There's not much food in the warm water but there's lots of food in the cold water. I learned that a whale's tail goes up and down but a fish's tail goes side to side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Friendship is the Compromise of Differences
This is the story of a baby fruit bat, also known as the "flying fox", named Stellaluna who fell off of her mother's belly during an assault on them by an owl, who is bats' natural enemy, as they flew in the night sky. Stellaluna, whose weak wings not being ready to fly yet, finds herself in a bird's nest among chicks. And a beautiful friendship begins as Stellakuna assumes the role of a "good bird" and becomes a member of the family. Soon nature makes them realize how different Stellaluna is from the other birds. Ultimately friendship proves to be the strongest force of nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is how much I love Jannell Cannon books...
I bought Stellaluna even before I had a child! I absolutely fell in love not only with the story and message the book conveyed, but also the wonderful and endearing artwork. I have since had a child and purchased all of her books, the latest one being Pinduli. It is the perfect follow-up to her other books.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Tale of Finding our Way
Beautifully illustrated, this story is filled with depth and meaning. The message this book carries is one of great sensitivity:how do we fit in with others who are "different", how do we fit in when sometimes we ourselves feel "different"? Most important, Stellaluna learns to accept and be herself:even when she is different from others. This is not necessarily an easy task at any age, and this tale can be a guide for children (and adults) finding their way to self-love.The story evokes "Zen Shorts" and "The Gift of You, The Gift of Me," two other picture books that are also beacons of light for finding our way, and also both beautifully illustrated, as is "Stellaluna." ...
