5-0 out of 5 stars Set your goals and go after them!
Young Phyllis the groundhog has a goal:she wants to be the next Punxsutawney Phil, the weather-forecasting groundhog who determines whether or not Spring is on its way. She's been told that no female has ever had that role, and that fact doesn't faze her in the least. She loves the outdoors, and she's got a real talent for reading the signs of Spring. When her Uncle Phil doesn't quite make the right call on Groundhog Day, Phyllis proves to him that she's got what it takes. He officially names her his successor.
5-0 out of 5 stars A groundhog who is not like others
Susanna Leonard Hill's Punxsutawney Phyllis tells of a groundhog who is not like others: she loves to splash in the cold river and tromp through the snow, and is happy year-round. This Feb. 2nd she's excited about a possible early Spring - but can she awaken old Uncle Phil to make his official Groundhog Day prediction? Jeffrey Ebbeler's whimsical color drawings lend to an inviting story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good way to teach counting
My two and a half year old son loves this book. We count each of the stars on each page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Starlight, Star Bright
The Baby Einstein product line has established a reputation for developing creative educational products that children enjoy, and BABY GALILEO SEES THE STARS is no exception. It is a concept book that combines counting with elements of astronomy in a way that will capture the attention of even the youngest of readers. The simple opening line "Ten stars twinkle," is indicative of the uncomplicated text in the book, yet, it is the illustrations that really bring the book to life. Each page includes three-dimensional stars that correspond with the number of stars mentioned in the text. The book counts down from ten and with each turn of the page, one of the stars disappear. In addition, each line includes an adjective describing a quality of stars, such as twinkle, sparkle or glow.By the last page, all of the stars have disappeared, but a moon (which lights up when the page is displayed) is depicted.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great good night book
My daughter enjoys reading this every night. She loves the little counting stars and the light up moon at the end is a real pleaser. This is a great gift and a book thats not always at the store.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun
For all children with imaginations and anyone who could learn something, this is a great little book about exaggerators and how to catch them, with a whimsical side to a mythological fact of how the armadillo got his ears. As a children's librarian I love this for storytimes.

2-0 out of 5 stars On the bright side the illustrations are sumptuous and rich.
Unfortunately, the book has only unsympathetic characters. The armadillo while he repeatedlytattletales, doesn't learn how toimprove his behavior, despite the grief it causes him and others, instead he is physically stopped by having his large receptive ears chewed down by the alligator. All his friends are mean, they throw "humongous hissy fits" ,they don't allow him to drink at the watering hole and they gang up on him. The writer lapses into using vague words like "what-for, how-come and why-not" that weaken the text and meaning.5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful!
We loved it - the pictures, the story, the ending. The "we" includes mom and an eight year old - but it's suitable for preschool and up. Wonderful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
Perfect in every sense - this book is a wonderful marriage of text and illustration. Parents and kids will love it. Writers should study it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love, without the syrup + a visual treat!
The illustrations in Little Raccoon's Big Question are wonderful.Little raccoon has a great range of emotion. My son (almost 4) loves the spread where all the young raccoons are playing in the tree. This is a book about a mother's affirmation of her love for her child - a subject that I have seen a lot of recently - HOWEVER, this book rises above the others. The text is spare, effective, and a pleasure to read (yes -again and again!).I love the illustration of Little Raccoon standing on his head. And I like the smart approach to the subject of a parent's unconditional love. This is one of the few picture books I will buy to give to my friends' children!A very good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my animal-loving son!
Bought this for my son's 6th birthday after reading all the reviews.I am definitely impressed. It has beautiful pictures - to be expected from National Geographic. It also provides a map highlighting the habitat for each animal and a pronunciation key as well. The text is interesting but not too technical for younger readers and each animal gets more than just a paragraph or two.It will grow well with him.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for your Kids
My son loves animals and received this book for Christmas two years ago. He continues to read this book every day. He is now six and this book have been his passion. He reads it to find out where each mammal lives and what he or she eats. What I found very good with this book was the fact that this was the book that helped him to start to read as well as got him interested in geography - "Dad, I didn't know that lemurs lived in Madagascar!" - What's a lemur and where is Madagascar?5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful pictures!

5-0 out of 5 stars A return of an old friend
This was a surprise when my daughter picked it out. I had forgotten this wonderful story from my childhood.
2-0 out of 5 stars Boring.
I bought this book because it was highly rated by Amazon viewers.I was looking for a children's book about something related to Australia since we are moving there. The mother kanagroo doesn't have a pocket so she asks other animals how they carry their babies. What my children thought was weird was that she asked lions and monkeys, (as opposed to other Australian animals like koalas, etc...)"Kanagroos don't live in Africa, Mom!"(We used to live in Africa.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Strange things happen if you read too much into it
A children's picture book about a mother kangaroo, predictably named Katy, and her joey, unpredictably named Freddy. Katy is sad because since she hasn't got a pocket like the other mother kangaroos, that when she hops, Freddy can't keep up with her. They realise that other species haven't got pockets, so they explore alternative infant-carrying methods, such as carrying the child on the back, or in the arms. None of these methods are successful. However, the wise old owl tells Katy she can buy a pocket in the city. They go to the city and meet a carpenter, who gives them an apron covered in dozens of pockets. Then Katy has more pockets than any other mother kangaroo in the world, and she carries not only her son, but also any other animals who would like a ride.

This is a beautiful book, and very pro breastfeeding!
5-0 out of 5 stars Dolphins
This book is about dolphins. A baby doilphin is born. The book tells how the mother dolphin has a baby. First the baby dolphin's tail comes out. Then his head comes out too. Then it tells how a baby dolphin is protected by its family. My favorite part was when the baby dolphin was born. I think other kids will like this book because they will learn about dolphins.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dolphin (An I Can Read Book)
A super book for the early reader.Focuses on the adventures of a baby dolphin, born at the beginning of the book.Combines his wonder of discovering the world around him with the comfort of knowing his mother isclose at hand.Parents should be cautioned that the little dolphin isattacked by a shark at one point in the book, but the pod works together tosave him.A very happy ending follows quickly and serves as a greatdiscussion tool. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Story, Unlikable Main Character
"Dolphin Diaries" mixes a typical teen adventure story with a unique and educational story about a girl who loves dolphins. But that's just the problem!Jody is so obsessed, that I find myself gravitating more toward Brittany, who is supposed to be the snobby girl. It's just so sickening how Jody can't have any fun without it involving dolphins!I actually find myself mentally cheering for Brittany when she makes a remark such as "Is dolphins the ONLY thing you can think about?".

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Magical
Jody, her family, and the crew aboard "Dolphin Dreamer" are thrilled as, after weeks at sea, they reach the beautiful and exciting Marquesas Islands. With so much to see and do, everyone is feeling energized and ready for what lies ahead. But while each person seems to have a different idea of "fun" on the islands, one thing is and has always been the main focus: dolphins.Especially for Jody, who has just befriended a spinner dolphin whom she named "Twister".

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling book!!!!!
Coyote and the laughing Butterflies is a magical book about a coyote adn his duty to bring salt to his wife from a huge salt lake. It hooked my attention right away and I didn't want to put it down until I was done. The illustrations in this book are grogeous and since I'm an animal lover teh cover and title attracted me right away.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coyote tale a good laugh
As a children's librarian, I am always tooking for folk tales from around the world to read or tell to children in the 4-8 year old group. This tale is fun to tell, but reading it and showing the colorful illustrations of the Southwestern United States is a good way to show children in Maine a different region of our country. The listeners loved having the coyote outwitted by butterflies, and many were able to re-tell the tale to parents.I used a coyote puppet to tell the tale, and the children did a butterfly color page after story time.I would highly recommend it to children's librarians and to parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Native American folk tale
Coyote and the Laughing Butterflies is a very amusing bit ofNative American folklore that can be enjoyed by all ages. It is abeautifully illustrated work in vivid color, written in explanation of why butterflies always fly in an erratic, fluttering way. It is funny, interesting, and compassionate. It is delightful light reading to be lovingly shared with your children to introduce them to Native American folk stories. ... Read more
