5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book!My kids Love it!
This book is so cute.I was having trouble with my eight year old wanting to read.I got this book thinking it unique, and may capture her interest since we love to go to the beach and watch the surfers. She loves it!We had to buy them all.The illustrations are very cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK ROCKS
I bought this book as sort of a joke, because it sounded so typically California sufer dude. And it is, but it is also awesome.Children love the colorful pictures and rhythmic language.Adults never get tired of reading it to the kids because it is so funny. This book now forms the centerpiece of my standard baby gift for new parents (along with a beach pail, swimsuit, or other appropriately aquatic-themed item).Everyone who's received one has told me they and their children love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way fun, way cool, and as the Hawaiians say: Talks story
My kids like the book so much that they drew their own pictures of rhinos surfing.Best of all, they are bugging me to take them surfing with me.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving and inspirational
My son first brought this book home on one of his weekly trips to the library at his preschool. It has quickly become one of our favorites for it's heartwarming story and wonderful illustrations. This book tells thestory of how a lost wolf pup is befriended by a hibernating bear who, inturn, helps the pup find his way home. The illustrationsare warm andstriking and the story is a wonderful tale of how two creatures can helpout one another in the darkest of circumstances. I can see how this bookwould be a favorite for children of all ages. ... Read more

Editorial Review

One quiet evening, Frances the badger is sitting under the kitchen sink, singing a little song, "Here are the buckets and brushes and me, / Plinketty, plinketty, plinketty, plee." When she stops singing to listen for parental coos of approval, she hears nothing. Frances is sure it's all her new baby sister's fault. It's why she has no raisins for her cereal, and it's why her new dress isn't ready for her to wear to school. She thinks she may run away after dinner. And she does! She takes her carefully packed knapsack and settles in under the dining-room table. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up to Bread and Jam for Frances
What a great book!I remember this book from my childhood, and when my goddaughter was born I knew that I had to get it for her.A classic for all ages--truly stands the test of time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Still a great book.
I read this book to my daughter after her little brother was born 35 years ago; read it to her daughter (my granddaughter) six years ago after my grandson's birth; and plan to read it to my son's daughter as she awaits the birth of her first sibling.By the way, my children "ran away" under the dining room table, and so do my grandchildren. And we all believe that some badgers can talk, sing, and drink from bottles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to prepare for new sibling
There are a lot of books out there to prepare older children for siblings, but this is one of our favorites. Frances has a new baby sister, and all of a sudden there are no more raisins for the oatmeal (Mother didn't have time to shop), and her blue dress isn't ironed (the yellow one is and Mother has a new ribbon for her hair, but Frances still declares, "Things are not very good around here anymore!") She decides to run away under the dining room table. I love the raised-voice discussion of the parents about what a wonderful and inspiring big sister Frances is and how it's just not the same without her. I've even been known to get tears in my eyes over the part where Mother Badger says, "Goodness knows I like babies. But a baby is not a family," and Father answers back, "Isn't that a fact. A family is everybody all together." Those words are what prompts Frances to come "home."

5-0 out of 5 stars Dolphin Adveture A True Story

4-0 out of 5 stars A Memorable Story
I am now 20 years old and haven't read this book since Elementary school.Today, I randomly found the book on Amazon and the familiar first edition hardcover. I don't know how old I was when I first read it, but I independently borrrowed it from the library at least 3 different times and enjoyed reading it every time.I've always remembered, foremost, the cleverness of the Dolphins and the anxiety and relief I felt every time I read the scenes with the sharks or the baby being unhooked.I would say Dolphin Adventure has made a positive and lasting impression upon me and that every animal-loving child should read it.

This is a great book for animal lovers! The characters and story are very realistic and interesting. I liked how the book told how hedgehogs should be free in the wild, and should not be kept in cages as pets.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Yet
After a while, the stories of Jody's dolphin adventures on the blue sea, which all seem to be slightly similar to one another, can be become rather boring. That is why this book is so entertaining!Imagine Jody, cruising down the colorful-but-dangerous Amazon river with her family and friends, in search of rare dolphins that, for once, don't befriend Jody right away as though they've known her all their lives.I could hardly put this book down until the time when I finished it, and couldn't help wishing that it wasn't over yet.I highly recommend this book if you have finished the fifth one, and I recommend this series to girls who love originality and adventure!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wombat, A Platypus, And Water Safety
This is a delightful and unusual children's book about respect, friendship, and water safety. In the beginning Little Wombat thinks Platypus is odd, but Platypus rescues Little Wombat after he falls into the water. Platypus then teaches Little Wombat to swim, and they become friends. The message is great for young kids: respect and kindness for those different than you. There is a secondary message of water safety that many young non-swimmers will appreciate: swimming can be fun, but safety is important (Platypus even teaches Little Wombat to "never swim on a full tummy.") In the end Little Wombat, Platypus, Koala, and Rabbit all have a great time, and all learn important lessons about friendship.
4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining!
The illustrations in this book are amazing! The colors and detail will keep young readers interested and attentive. Little Wombat meets a new friend who is quite different from him. He thinks this new friend is funny at first but soon discovers that his new friend is quite special and can teach him much. The story though a bit trite, is one that young readers will probably be able to relate to, or at least understand. The moral of this tale is one that everyone can enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book!
My daughter will be 3 in April and we discovered this book at the library while picking out books after story time. She wants to read this one every night at bedtime, so I plan to buy it for her for her birthday.I echo all the other reviews, and agree that I think it is one that should be in every child's library!Even though the situations in the book happen to "raccoon children" they are real life situations that could happen to any "human child".Great job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book for my nephew who is named Hunter!5-0 out of 5 stars Can a best friend, help his friend be his best self?
As an educator of young children for over twenty-five years, I find Hunter's Best Friend at School by Laura Elliott to be one of the best books I have ever read, dealing with being true to one's self. All children want to be liked and often do things that they would not otherwise do, just to be accepted. Hunter and Stripe are such friends, yet with the help of his mother and his teacher, Hunter is able to set an example that encourages Stripe to be "his best self." This book is absolutely delightful and entertaining. The words, the illustrations, the message of being true to oneself is certainly needed in today's world. I read it to a Kindergarten class that was spellbound by the second page. The school librarian is going to order one copy for each of the primary classes at our school. My own grandsons, age five and seven, were touched by Hunter's example, with the five-year-old saying, "my eyes are getting wet from hearing that story" and the seven-year-old saying, "I have that problem with my friend." Out of the mouth of babes is a telling review of this wonderful book and I would encourage every parent and grandparent to include it in their children's library as soon as possible. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sloths scored one
Welcome to Sleep Valley Sloth School where you will find sloths just hanging around in pajamas, " content in their slothfulness". The classroom was equipped with pillows for each sloth as well as a place for slippers and robes. Adorning the walls are individual drawings of a chair that reclines, a bed and a pillow that made a B+. The schedule listed shows nothing for morning and afternoon with a chalkboard showing the counting of sheep.
5-0 out of 5 stars Silly sloth book
Sleepy Valley has a school just for sloths. The sloth children sleep through their classes, and they sleep through recess, too, just like their teacher. One day, a new energetic sloth named Sparky shows up and tries to get them excited about something- -about anything! But she doesn't have much success. Then the superintendent, a real boar, comes to inspect the school, and it's up to Sparky to single-handedly save the school. The story is cute and not at all scary. It might be most enjoyable for the younger school-aged crowd. It has about 400 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and entertaining picture-book format non-fiction
The 10th in a series of "About...A Guide for Children" books, ABOUT MARSUPIALS is a representative example of this terrific series. The "About...A Guide for Children" books are great nonfiction titles for the preK - 2nd grade set, each focusing on one type of animal (marsupials, mammals, birds, reptiles). The books are laid out in two-page spreads, eaching providing a very brief fact (for example, "Some marsupials do not have a pouch") and a beautifully detailed illustration of a specific type of animal. The large colorful pictures and the brief text make these terrific nonfiction additions to storytime and other read-aloud activities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A simply fascinating and compelling nonfiction book
Superbly written by Barbara Hehner, Ice Age Sabertooth is both an educational and highly entertaining picturebook for practiced young readers. It goes into amazing detail about these powerful and deadly long-toothed predators of the ice age, their habitats, their prey, the probable causes of their extinction, and their surviving feline relatives. Splendid, glorious, dramatic full-color illustrations by Mark Hallett enhance this picturebook presentation of a great and ancient member of the cat family. Ice Age Sabertooth is a simply fascinating and compelling nonfiction book certain to captivate youthful minds and imaginations! ... Read more

For the most part, this book is pretty good. However, I was disappointed that the author uses the term "Killer Whale" instead of "Orca!" ... Read more
