    Editorial Review

We hold this truth to be self-evident: farting makes kids laugh. Walter,an apologetic-looking dog adopted from the pound, passes gas morning, noon, and night, no matter what he eats, whether it's a 25-pound bag oflow-fart dog biscuits, cat food, or fried chicken. On the bright side,"If Uncle Irv let one slip, he just went and stood near Walter." WhenFather reaches the limit of his patience with Walter's flatulence, hedecides the pooch is once again pound-bound, despite Betty and Billy'spleading. Poor Walter knows his days are numbered and "He resolved tohold in his farts forever." That very night, two burglars break intoWalter's family's house, and (you can see where this is going) Waltergasses the burglars with a "hideous cloud" that forces them to droptheir loot and run into the clutches of the police officers, "chokingand gasping for air." The next morning Father and Mother discoverWalter has saved the day--or at least their silverware andVCR. "And so the family learned to live with Walter, the hero dog. Andthat is the end of our tail." (Or is it? Fans will be pleased todiscover the next book Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ripping off Dav Pilkey
This book was terrible, because it is a rip-off of "Dog Breath:The Horrible Tale of Hally Tosis" by Dav Pikley, which came out in 1994!The only difference is that Walter farts while Hally has bad breath. In both stories, the terrible smell prompts families to give the dogs away, and nothing they try gets rid of the terrible odors. In both books, the burgulars break in to the family homes, and are deterred by the animals' bad smell, and the dog saves the day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hysterically pleasing.
I bought this book to read to my family over holiday break and sat down with little kids, friends, grandparents and parents present. Not only did I have trouble reading it without snorting but my grandmother almost peed her pants laughing so hard. Acceptance is the only lesson you will get out of this book. This book was written for humor only. If you've ever owned a dog, you know most of this book is exaggeratingly true. Great for all ages. Strange, yet intriguing illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fancy Fresh Air!
Fancy Nancy loves fancy clothes and knows fancy words. When she decides to teach her family how to be fancy, the results are comical. How will her family help when she falls on her face on her big night?
5-0 out of 5 stars Completely and utterly charming!:5++
After running across Fancy Nancy while surfing amazon.com, I went to Borders Bookstore to see it in the flesh and was instantly captivated. It's a good-sized picture book with the most remarkable illustrations imaginable! There's even glitter incorporated into the book's cover. Having a "fancy nancy" granddaughter who turns five later this month, it will make the perfect gift (and if I ever need an illustrator I'm calling on Robin Priess Glasser!!).

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old loved this book
My 2 year old daughter loves this book. She loves the flip up pages and feeling the different textures. She tends to be pretty rough on books and this one is holding up great.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is okay, but examples aren't perfect
I have a 2.5 year old son, and I ended up changing the wording to the story when I read it to him.I was a little disappointed by the examples that were used to teach manners, because my child didn't catch on as to why, for example, he would say "no thank you" when asked if he wanted peas for breakfast. My son would be willing to eat peas for breakfast!
2-0 out of 5 stars big step down in physical quality
our 20 month old daughter LOVES the Karen Katz "lift the flap" books, and this one was no exception, EXCEPT that this book is physically cheaper quality and less robust - after only about 2 weeks, this one was pretty much destroyed. It's much less robust than "where's baby's mommy" and "where's baby's bellybutton", our other two Karen Katz books. ... Read more

This is one of the best pre-k early reader books ever! What makes this a great book is it has humor that mom and dad can appreciate too, which is great since they'll be reading it over and over again! The art and vocabulary are simple but very effective in communicating the emotions of our hero the pigeon. This is a must have in every child's library.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Anxious Billy-Bully.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Dear god please think of the Children" or "Falafel."
Amazon truly did you all a favor by mercifully offering you an excerpt of ten whole pages of Mr. O'Reilly's book. This was a luxury I was not given, and now I can't help but feel it's too late for my poor soul. I stomached the whole enchilada, and I warn you this is one Mexican (or wet-back, as Mr. O'Reilly ocassionally refers to people of Mexican origin) dish you do NOT wish to tackle. The first ten pages alone tell you exactly what kind of person Bill O'Reilly is. It is obvious that this iteration of this children's edition of his wildlyasinine "The O'Reilly Factor" is just another attempt to gouge his enamored viewers for more money. This book offers no real advice that cannot be already garnored by the occasional disney channel blurb or the elusive "common sense." It takes him two precious pages to explain to his obviously mentally ill readers that "real friends" are not anything like those on the show "Friends." Being a fan of the show I have to agree with O'Reilly, but then I'd be forced to ask "What the hell Bill?!" He recently settled a lawsuit pressed against him for a rumored $10 million by a Ms. Mackris for sexual harassment. He attempts to teach our children about sex, but is himself a barely disguised chauvenist and borderline deviant. His previous "The O'Reilly Factor" has it's own section on sex. Here he shows just how little respect for woman and boastfully describes many of his "sexual conquests." In his fiction novel "Those Who Tresspass" he self inserts himself as an irresistable and dangerous womanizer. Feel free to use the main character in this novel as a personality guide for O'Reilly himself. He is desperately and consistently seeking admiration from his audience. It's both sad and sickening. He barely alludes to his "rambunctious" childhood misadventures with his friends, trying to pass by his readers what he "learned" from those experiences. However, both his massively (depressingly) popular cable "news" show and his series of near toxic books reveal a man borderline insane. He's rediculously angry at the most obnoxiously inane things, a chronic liar, and has the memory span of an 80 year old hamster with alzheimers. He will literally make points in this book and provide evidence that counters his own argument. His show is no different. He will make wildly offensive comments. When his callers call him up on it, he has his chronies "replay the tape." Of course, in the year 2006 we are completely unable to actually replay this tape on modern television for viewers, as you can see when his chronies shout back off camera a completely different statement. He has never apologized for his actions, only grunting with simian aggression and angrily moving on to the next segment. This man cannot hold multiple marriages, yet he attempts to teach children about relationships. Mr. O'Reilley is to televised journalism what pornography is professional photography. Any person who truly consider themselves a conservative should be horrified by how he represents the demographic. A recent example is of a jewish man who called into his show to make his case that having Christmas during school as he grew up made him feel uncomfortable because he felt constantly pressured to be more Christian. O'Reilly responded by telling the man that if he didn't want to live in a Christian nation he should move to Israel. Any truly religious person whether Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or Buddhist should find a comment like this wildly offensive. Well, perhaps the Buddhists will let that one go. In a country where religious freedom is one of it's main tenets, perhaps O'Reilly would be advised to know that a marginal amount of secularism in public and government institution is necessary for religious freedom. The founding fathers considered religion a largely personal matter, as did Jesus. "Render unto Caesar's what is Caesar's."

...I read this book.I find it a pleasant diversion (like Mr. O'Reilly himself) as well during those all-too-frequent shuffleboard lulls. If he'd been born a century or so earlier, Bill would've been one of those "shoot from the hip" type of fellows; pity then that he wasn't.I like Bill. That's a clear as I can make it.So I figured I'd turn my kids on to him -- sounds innocent enough, right?Wrong. See, my kids hated this book.Mocked it.Made it an ongoing joke at every dinner table since."But Bill has some good advice," I pleaded with them over chips and salsa one leathery afternoon, "he's a real shoot from the hip guy, kids".Doh! ... Editorial Review

Parents will be quick to jump to the conclusion that there can benothing appealing in a tale of an ugly kid who breaks things. And certainly--from that adult perspective--there's something off-putting about the illustrations of David, with his potato head, feral eyes, and a maniacal grin that exposes ferociously pointed teeth. But 3- and 4-year-olds see things differently, and will find his relentless badness both funny and liberating."No, David," wails the off-stage mother, as David reaches for the cookie jar. "No! No! No!" as he makes a swamp out of the bathroom. "Come back here, David!" as he runs naked down the street. Each vivid double-page illustration is devoted to a different youthful indiscretion and a different vain parental plea. Readers will be amused to know that the protagonist's name is no accident: award-winning writer-illustrator David Shannon wrote the book after discovering a similar effort that he had made, again with himself at the center of each drawing, at the age of 5. 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, David, I love you
I don't know why my sixteen-month old daugter loves this book.Perhaps it's the repetition, or illustrations, or the emphasis with which the phrases are read.I DO know that she now has an insatiable interest in books, uses the word 'no' appropriately, and anticipates the resolution at the end of this and "David Gets in Trouble."
5-0 out of 5 stars It makes my kids laugh with delight, that makes it a five for me
Some reviewers take this stuff way too seriously! The book is hilarious, my kids giggle everytime they read it.And, my three year old can read it, which makes her feel great.David isn't evil, I don't see him portrayed as evil, and if he is, my kids are evil also because lord knows they have done almost everything in there themselves, the lesson is that we love and adore our kids even if they are misbehaving!

5-0 out of 5 stars kids LOVE it
I didn't really get this book at first since there is little writing and just these big, somewhat scary illustrations.Just goes to show you that children's books are FOR CHILDREN, because my kids, 4 and 2, LOVE David. They scream and giggle when they see the bad things he's doing, and throughout the day they will "remind" themselves not to do something "bad like David."They can look at the illustrations and create whole stories out of one page.I think that is what the beauty of the book is truly about. As I started reading it with them, I became charmed by the crude, simple drawings, and just how expressive David is, even though he's not more than a stick figure. The first time we read it, I just read the words on each page.I had to explain one or two pictures, but they completely got the ending themselves. The very next time, I asked them what they thought was going on in each picture and they went crazy telling me all about the things David was doing, and why that's not allowed and what he should be doing instead! They truly never tire of this story, and I wouldn't have guessed that at all when I first picked this title up.Contrary to what some other reviewers said, David doesn't inspire bad behavior or copycat actions. That's the whole point of reading it with them.I don't think some of the other books in the series are as inspired as this first one, but that may just be because I was spoiled by how much we all love this one. ... When my son was approaching his 12th birthday, he was forgetting the good manners he had before - everything was a "joke" for him, however, I was afraid he could be offending people, friends, with his behavior.I gave him this book for his birthday. When he read the title "How Rude" he got mad.Later, I saw him taking this book to his room and saw him reading it.Since then, every night he was reading a part.A week later he confessed that this was a great book and he thanked me for it.Any guidance from parents sounds like "nagging" - this book guides teenegers (and pre-teens)giving them good tips.Needless to say, my son improved a lot - he's back to "normal" and we all read this book because is very funny.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious But A Bit Immoral
At 465 pages, this nonfiction book is longer than many fiction books. Who knew there was so much to say about manners? But apparently, there is, and Dr. Packer deals with it in a light, amusing way that had me laughing so hard I actually fell on the floor. It also includes some valuable information known to few -i.e. "don't floss your teeth before having sex".
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Most teenagers will love this book but not all. One grandson and one granddaughter thought it was very helpful, a third grandchild did not like it. It deals with real kids' issues and problems and gives then actual things they can say, as well as what not to say.It even has some very good advice for how teenagers can talk to their parents.Best of all, it has lots of humor in it.We read parts of it aloud with a teenage grandson and we were all laughing. It has good advice for non-teenagers too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Top Secret Files Revealed!
An adult has done the unthinkable! Broken the secret adult pact and published confidential files telling kids the truth about various rules we adults have passed onto them under the misconception that these rules were for their own good.David Wisniewski reveals the truth that the real reason we eat vegetables is to keep them in their place so they do not take over the world and eat us, instead of the lies we tell that vegetables are good for you.Other secrets he reveals include the reason why grown ups say drink plenty of milk, that combing your hair is not to keep it neat, why you shouldn't blow bubbles in your milk, why you shouldn't play with your food, why you shouldn't jump on your bed, why you shouldn't bite your fingernails and why you shouldn't pick your nose.

Walter the Farting Dog is a great fiction book. Its authors are William Katzwinkle and Glen Muarry. Its main characters are the man at the yard sale, Walter, Betty, Billy, and the dad.
4-0 out of 5 stars My son loved it
My son loves Walter. He is a typical boy and body noises and it just makes him laugh. He isn't a kid that likes to read, but with the Walter books he is willing sit down and read to me and actually enjoys it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't hold my interest like the first one did.
Walter is back but not with the same enthusiasm as the first book. I barely laughed at this book and was disappointed because I absolutely fell in love with William Kotzwinkle's original Farting Dog book. Same strange, yet intriguing illustrations but the story didn't hold my interest. ... Read more

This is an excellent book using age appropriate language to send out the message of just how hurtful and harmful words can be.We all know the doggerel bravado verse of sticks and stones is just a crock.I never bought it because words are infinitely more painful than any stick or stone.I think that deceptive verse should be changed to:

5-0 out of 5 stars cookies are important
This is the kind of book that children of all ages should read, or have someone read to them.I love the way the book compares everyday words with cookies! The golden retriever on the front of the book is adorable, too. It's a very educational, creative and memorable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Way to Learn is While Enjoying a Cookie
I bought this book for my husband who is known for baking the best tasting cookies in the small town where we live. The book is a delight to read and a great way to teach kids lessons such as sharing, patience, respect, trustworthiness, cooperation, compassion, etc. The illustrations are warm additions and you can almost smell the cookies.
5-0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful book
This is such a wonderful book.I was attracted to Jane Dyer's lovely illustrations and fell in love with the story.By using chocolate chip cookies, Rosenthal explains such things as envy, greed, cooperation, kindness, etc in a manner that helps children understand and gives adults a reason to smile.Today is my daughter's 6th birthday.Rather than take in treats that would be forgotten quickly, she gave her kindergarten teacher and class a copy of this book as a present. The teacher (and class) loved it.This book would be a wonderful present for a young child (say kindergarten to first grade) and a welcome addition to any libary.I cannot recommend it enough. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Table Manners & Great Dinosaurs
My boys and I love Yolen's How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? so of course, we had to get this book.I have a four year old and an 18 month old. They both love the funny pictures and the subject matter.I like that I get to talk to my older son about table manners when we read this book.I did have to do some research to learn how to pronounce some of the names of the dinosaurs (ie. quetzalcoatlus) but that's OK-- my four year old now thinks I'm a dino expert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for young dino lovers
This series is great! I have a 2-year-old nephew who loves dinosaurs right now. This was an entertaining book for the both of us.

1-0 out of 5 stars Encourages Unhealthy Eating Habits
With a childhood obesity epidemic in the United States, the last thing we need is a book that teaches kids to clean up their plates.Though this series of books is generally fantastic, I am terribly disappointed with the eating habits this particular book seeks to instill. Many prominent table problems among toddlers and young children are ignored.Healthy eating and eating until one is full should also be covered, but the author is completely oblivious to modern medical opinions on nutrition and diet.I am dumping this book ASAP.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book but you will have to scale down for toddlers
munro leaf's books in this series are excellent but before i bought it i checked it out at the library and i am glad i did.the concept is great but even for my 3 yr old daughter who will sit still for a book with great patience, she was losing interest. So i am just reviewing to share with others that you may have to shorten it as you read it to toddlers but it is a terrific series and would be perfect for children age 4 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manners Can Be Fun
I remember this book from my own childhood, which is why I selected it for my grand-daughter.I enjoyed Mr. Munro Leaf's positive and humorous style in putting forth his gentle philosophy of courtesy to others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, simple book for children of all ages
I am 65 years old and this was one of my first books. The revisions along the way have not changed the drawings that much.It is simple, but well illustrated, and gives a basic idea of good manners.I recommend it for every child - it makes them think about behavior. The way the author demonstrates "me first" and "whinney" have stuck with me all these years. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a great new addition to our book shelf!
As a mom of a pink princess obsessed 4yr. old, this book is right up her alley! The story is fun and well written. I love this Sassie character! The illustrations are bright and eye catching, such a fun and whimsical book that my daughter hasn't let out of her sight! (let alone, let her younger sister even touch!) We've even decided we're going to buy another copy to donate to her preschool so they can fall in love with it as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best children's book illustrations I have ever seen... BRAVO!!
I have been a fan of Dena's work for years. Sassafras's illustrations manage to capture the emotions of the spoiled pink poodle perfectly. The illustrations are colorful, whimsical, and utterly delightful. Some of the best children's book illustrations I have ever seen, and it is now my two children's absolutely favorite book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sassie is fabulous
I absolutely LOVED Sassafrass. It perfectly captures in a comedic way how success can change and warp a personality, and how when a person (or a dog) starts to believe her own publicity, she can lose track of who she really is.Staying true to yourself and keeping your head on straight in good times and in bad is a great message for children and adults. And this tale is told with such a light touch--that it's like eating a chocolate souffle!Brava Sassie! You are adorable! ...
