5-0 out of 5 stars A Wild book on Wild Whales
This review is by my 10 year old son. This book has moreinformation on Whales than other books I have read. First they go on abus tour. Then they turn the bus into a sub. Ms. Frizzle, Has four mini-subs. Two kids went in each sub. Ms. Frizzle, stayed in the bus with the Captain Gil. Then the adventure begins. I enjoyed this book very much.

Editorial Review

Photographer Mark Blum executes a sterling idea for a book: a collection of stereoscopic images of deep-sea fish and reptiles, with 3-D glasses bound right into the book's cover. The result is an entertaining you-are-there tour of the ocean deeps that appeals to all ages. Some images are of places that are perilous of access, such as a submarine labyrinth off Borneo full of dolphin and turtle skeletons. Others, boasting populations of anemones and barracudas, are easier to get to--for anyone with an aqualung, that is. No matter where they're set, the photographs impart a wonderful sense of adventure and scientific discovery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't know what I was in for!
I ordered this book primarily for the benefit of my 7 year old son. We're doing a research project on oceans, and while we have a few good resources, I felt this one, with its 3d imagery, would more likely capture and hold his attention. What I didn't realize was how thoroughly it would capture and hold mine. For me, 3D had always meant multicolored plastic glasses and headaches. Though the book was described as stereoscopic, I didn't understand what that meant. Stereography was something new for me, even if as a form of photography it is over 150 years old.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!
This is an amazing book!Makes me want to take up scuba diving.I've never seen such good 3D, not to mention that it's real photos from underwater with incredible colors.Get this book! And I'm going to go get the rest of the books by this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book with stereo 3-D photos!

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical memories
Charming story capturing a magical childhood day. Makes you think about memories of special days from your own childhood, and family that have passed away. The details that are recounted would not be remembered by an adult experiencing them. Now that entire weeks seem to fly by faster than a single childhood day, this story will bring you back to a child's view of a slower moving world. Though a bit slow compared to what adults are used to as they go through the daily routine, my 4-year-old loves the pace of this book, and dwells on the details. The 'impressionist' illustrations are captivating, particularly the 'climax' page where the moonjellies light up the sea. The final page chokes me up a bit, as the grandmother attempts to 'bottle' memories of that special day for her grandson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful!
Our children (ages 3 and 5) LOVE this book. And so do I. The illustrations are gorgeous. The story is fantastic. And what makes it even more nice is that it's true. This is one of our favorite children's books. Our kids ask for this time and time again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for boys
This book is a wholesome family and nature oriented book for boys 3-8 years old.My son has spent countless hours playing out the theme of this book - never tiring of the many options it offers. If you have a budding oceanographer or tide-pooling enthusiast this is the book for you.Any landlocked readers can enjoy the book just as well. The book's pictures fill the pages as well as the mind with dreamy images that bring the whole story to life. The words and images are really a hand and glove that make a perfect fit.The book also models working together as a family and that children can have an important place in helping.Grandma's get a boost here too as quick and creative planners.Nigth of the Moonjellies is also a gentle reminder to save some of the present for the future, without heavy sentimentality.A great book to read if you include any aquariums in your vacations.Don't forget about Aliki's great "My Visit to the Aquarium" book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better in the series
This book is part of a whole series covering fish, reptiles, mammals, birds, amphibians and insects. "How to Hide an Octopus" is one of the better books in the series, and not a bad place to start if you haven't tried them before. If you do have another one, this is certainly a good member of the series. Some of the fishes are very difficult to find (Even I took a few tries to find all of the pipefish). My son like "How to Hide a Butterfly" better, possibly because this one is a little difficult (He's only 2). If your child is older, this may be a good choice. ... Read more

Shows Scuba divers studying the sharks. The scuba divers where of great interest to the children. The photos are very nice. It has just enough information for a young child.

4-0 out of 5 stars engaging and interactive, perfect for tactile toddlers
This & the other Magic Windows Touch & Feel books are my highly tactile 16-month-old son's VERY favorite books (well, it's a toss-up between these and the "That's Not My..." series). He loves to look at the bright colors and feel all the different textures, not to mention notice the changing pictures and "reveals" when I pull out the center panel of each page for him.

Students love to learn and this book is a great one for them. The photographs are fascinating, the text is engaging and simple enough. It will be a part of my classroom this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A. D. Tarbox, Freelance Reviewer for Midwest Book Review
I picked this book because my children and I did not know much about jellyfish. This book is wonderfully photographed and George's factual text really make this book a must read for adults who share nature books with children or for children to enjoy alone. As a scuba diver I have seen a few jellyfish in the wild but never the assortment in this book. Jellyfish are amazing animals and George does an excellent job getting this information across to the reader. JELLIES is an excellent non-fiction picture book for children under 8. Twig C. George has other books out with ocean nature themes. They are fiction books for juveniles called A DOLPHIN NAMED BOB and SWIMMING WITH SHARKS.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book
Tomas Torres is a Mexican teenager who is forced to make the decision of whether or not to stay in school or go on to be a fisherman like his father and grandfather before him. Tomas wants to keep his fathers business alive, while his teacher is pushing him to stay in school and study marine biology. Opinions are split, things go wrong, read the book and find out what happens. A Shark Beneath The Reef is a wonderful book about a boy who is faced with the decision of school or fishing. His father was killed by a shark, and he has always wanted to continue his legacy. Tomas gains many different opinions on the topic before he decides. The marine police around his town are trying to shut down his fathers fishing business, and Tomas is caught up in the business of trying to save it, all while trying to make his decision. This was a very well written, well-researched book. The author uses great nature descriptions in the book, which really add to the book in many ways. I would recommend this to anyone looking for simply a good book.
1-0 out of 5 stars one of the worst books ever written
This is by far one of THE worst books I have ever read IN MY LIFE. The lead character, Tomas, is played out as a normal Mexican child, yet the author makes it sound like he is an adult. It is set in Baja, Mexico, i'm sure this place is rural and doesnt have a lot of people, but I'm sure they have better things to do then stalk sharks and pretend there are boats on top of mountains. About 85% of this book is about Tomas talking about fishing. Okay, if you are contemplating being a fisherman, GET this book, I'm sure it can help you. For the rest of you, if you buy this book you are just wasting your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Here is the Coral Reef
Purchased this to replace the one we lost from the public library.Kids liked it and it helped them learn the reef life. Mom went a little crazy with all the repetition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Here is the Perfect Kids' Book Series!
Not only does my niece love this book, I'm quite fond of the series, too!The illustrations are detailed and painstakingly accurate, but the real treasure is Dunphy's language. The motif may seem simple, but it activelytunes in a child's curiosity, making her or him eager to turn the page andsee what's next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for teaching about ecological systems, fun!
I really enjoy Madeleine Dunphy's "Here is the Coral Reef," as I do all ofher other "Here is..." books (rainforest, arctic winter, southwestern desert, and wetlands). "Here is the CoralReef" provides parents a fun, colorful medium for teaching childrenabout the coral reef ecosystem. The cumulative verse format is an elegantway to teach about the interconnections between all life.Theillustrations are gloriously bright, with just enough action to keep thekids going, but nothing gory. The story grows incrementally with eachpage, tracing the unseen threads of biological systems, and culminating ina montage of its reef-dwelling characters. Kids seem to like therepetition...but any parent knows how much children enjoy repeating theirfavorite stories, songs or videos over and over and over!I would highlyrecommend this subtle yet effective book for parents and educators (*****). ...
