5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing New Book for Young Readers
Pandora the cat; Seabold the dog; and Whistler, Lila, and Tiny, the orphaned mice, make-up the wonderful, Lighthouse Family. Together they live amongst each other in an old Lighthouse on the water, where they help to direct ships. However, one day Whistler and Lila hear the cries of a whale, a baby beluga whale named Sebastian, to be exact. Soon they have found that poor Sebastian has lost his Mother, and doesn't know where to find her. It's now up to Whistler and Lila, with the help of the rest of the Lighthouse Family, and a cranky old cormorant named Huck, to find Sebastian's Mother, and bring mama and baby together once again.
4-0 out of 5 stars I like this book.

This book is especially recommended for people who live near the sea. I loved the quiet, sweet interactions between the sea animals, and the soft beauty of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful natural history for young readers
This natural history traces the life cycle of a Barbour's Sea Horse. The facts are presented clearly and are supported by outstanding illustrations. The author has also provided an index and encourages young readers to use it -- not common in a picture book aimed at young readers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Text and drawings not appropriate
This book provides more details about the reproduction of the sea horse than I think are appropriate for the age level of the book. If those pages were not included the book would have been a beautiful addition to my library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The old lady, Northwest-style
Just about every pre-schooler knows the story and song, "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly;" here's a colorful aquatic version of that story, about an old lady who swallowed in rhymed sequence (among other things) a trout, a salmon, an otter, a porpoise ("she did it on purpose, she swallowed a porpoise!"), a whale, and at last the whole ocean.
5-0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book

3-0 out of 5 stars A book about differences
This book has been a snoozer on my child's bookshelf when we got it at a Scholastic book fair. Now I'm not saying that it is a bad book, but it just does not keep my son's (and daughter's) interest for very long. When I get around to reading this book with them I tend to stop in the middle of the book and start making up my own story. One example is where Nipper the Crab is hiding in a big clamshell until his clumsy claws smash it open: revealing himself in a game of hide and seek. It is hard for us to keep engaged with the original story for long so my son tends to come up with a better story. A prime example would be for Nipper to show his friends just how strong he is by smashing the shell open, "Raaaagh! Smash! I'm the most powerful crab ever!" No clumsy hide and seek player he! The pictures of the book do a better job of holding my kid's interest. We go, "There's a jellyfish, have we seen one of those before? I saw one of those at the beach in Galveston. Are they predators? Do they eat meat? Where are the sharks? I want a turtle. etc..." The story is left far behind while my son delves into more important matter of whether the seaweed is actually a monster trying to eat Snapper's friend Octopus. Then, when we are done, the book kicks up its heels, drowsily lounges on the bookshelf and then nods off for several months. The moral to the story seems to be people who are different are OK and things that you see as a weakness could be strength. Not a bad moral but a different reading of the book would be much more interesting.Themes of hiding and discovery, darkness and light, ignorance and revelation, loneliness and communion could all be drawn from this book. Ah, alas....

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightfully illustrated story which is ideal for children ages 3 to 7
Charmingly written and colorfully illustrated by Ruth Alloway, Clumsy Crab is the picturebook tale of Nipper, a loveable crab with huge, clumsy claws. No matter what games Nipper plays with his friends, those claws always get in the way! So the friends decide to play hide-and-seek (which is something they can all do together) but Nipper's claws ruin his hiding place! So instead, Nipper looks for his friends while they hid. He finds Turtle and Jellyfish, but there's no sign of Octopus until Nipper sees that Octopus is tangled tight in the weeds. Now it's up to Nipper and his clumsy claws to rescue his friend! Clumsy Crab is a delightfully illustrated story which is ideal for children ages 3 to 7 and would make a popular addition to any family, preschool, elementary school, or community library collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars DISCOVER A MAGIC UNDERWATER WORLD
.5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book
This is another beautiful book from a great artist. Jeannie Baker uses a range of techniques to bring to life the underwater world. Each of the pictures has been created so lovingly that Baker's respect for the Australian landscape is obvious. As a teacher of young children I love this book for its detail. It never fails to quieten a class as they gaze at the pictures and listen to the wonderful story. I have also given copies to my nephew who is ocean-crazy and he loves it. Down here in Australia we spend a lot of time in the ocean, looking at the ocean and talking about the ocean and this is one of those books that is becoming a kids classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There's something about Jim Arnosky's art.....
A must for the young shark enthusiast. My 5 year old uses the great illustrations to better his own shark art. Jim Arnosky is one of the best illustrators for kids. This book also covers the basic facts on sharks: The shark family divisions, shark anatomy, shark safety, shark teeth, and shark young.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid introduction with realistic color drawings
Jim Arnosky's All About Sharks deserves ongoing attention for its attraction for younger picturebook readers seeking a solid introduction with realistic color drawings which are startling but not terrifying. Full color and the inclusion of anatomical cut-aways for simple viewing make for an excellent basic introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sea version to " Over in the Meadow "book
This book's idea came from a book I loved as a child called " Over in the Meadow, Where the Green Grass Grows". This book has taken counting in the meadow to the beautiful world and animals that live under the sea! 5-0 out of 5 stars Crabs, whales & sharks...oh my!
A rhyming counting story that makes us want to sing. The pages are bursting with color, mommy sea creatures swimming with their babies. The book introduces all kinds of sea creatures: Whales, fish, otters, crabs, sharks, seahorses, jellyfish & more. Utterly enjoyable for me as well as my 3 year old.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to ocean creatures
I use this book as part of a children's program in Olympic National Park. It has several things going for it: the illustrations are beautiful; therhyming is fun and engaging; each creature is introduced with an action;and it allows children and adults to readily relate through some universalconcepts (like parent-child relationships, shelter, safety, playing, etc.).People from around the U.S. as well as from other continents enjoy andconnect with this book. We talk about the animals in the story and discussthe meanings of any unfamiliar words during the program. Perhaps childrenreading this book outside of a ranger program would be inspired to findtheir meanings independently, and discover more about our dynamic oceans. ... Read more

Word on the street (which is to say, librarian-based listservs) has it that the book "Surprising Sharks" is incredibly popular these days.Having heard that this book was flying from shelves across the country, garnering the love and respect of thousands of children every day, I thought I'd check it out myself. It's very rare that a non-fiction book becomes overwhelmingly accepted by kids. But when it happens, watch out!It might be all you can do to keep the l'il buggers from reading it day and night and day again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun colors, happy drawings in a cute guessing game book.
This book is full of repetition and rhyming fun.Timothy is at the park testing out his new telescope and thinks he keeps seeing a shark.Three of the pages have holes through them so that one might guess what he is seeing before the next page is turned. It never truly is a shark that he sees in the park but this is a fun book to read with a child ages 2-6 to see their expressions, guesses to the telescope hole page and reaction to what it really is that Timothy is seeing. This story would be fun to use in a kindergarten class when shapes are being taught.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a Shark now!
I bought this book on a whim and it was the best purchase ever. I am a preschool teacher and this book became the class favorite as soon as I brought it to school. We read it many times a day, and the children can read the book themselves they know it so well. The illustrations are wonderful and the children learn directions such as up, down, left and right and really enjoy yelling, "Shark in the Park!!" at the top of their lungs. At our school your class is named after a animal, due to this book we are now...the Shark group. Please buy this book you will not be dissapointed! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun story of a fearful shark and his helpful friends
Shark is the bravest in the ocean and shouldn't be afraid of anything - but he is scared of tigers, and soon his lobster friend and the underwater community shares his concerns. A fortress isn't enough: it might take a bigger sea monster to ally their fears in this fun story of a fearful shark and his helpful friends.
4-0 out of 5 stars A story with some bite in it
You'd think with all those teeth and claws between them, Shark and Lobster wouldn't be easily intimidated. Except by tigers.
