Great preschool read
My preschoolers love this book. Smiley shark is a great book for learning about the ocean or talking about teeth or just having fun reading. The story line is simple. All the creatures are scared of Smiley Shark until one day he saves them from a fisherman's net and they all become his friend. the Story is wrote very nicely and the art work is wonderful.I have read this book several time to the children and they often will ask to read it again. Another great book is "Shark Trouble," About two monkeys trapped on small seperate islands with sharks swimming around the islands. All the kids love the shark books.

Sharky's book review
This is a great book for children to read or for parents to read to their children. This book installs a mentality into a childs thoughts that no matter what others think or say or do, you can alwayus be a good person and help others. It also means that what you think is a handicapp now could help you or your friends later on down the road. This is a great book for begining readers or for parents just reading to their children.

Great Book
Our 2.5 yr old son has a love/hate relationship with sharks. Loves them, but is also scared of them. I got him this book to help him overcome his fear of sharks (they always seem to be in his closet or under his bed at night - thank goodness our dog can sleep in his room & "eat" the sharks). Kurt Cyrus just gets better
I fell in love with Oddhopper Opera and bought it before my son was even conceived.I recently discovered Hotel Deep and ordered it sight-unseen.It is yet further proof that Kurt Cyrus is a fabulous artist and a brilliant poet.This is now my 2.5-yr-old's favorite book.He asks for it by name ("Read Toe Deep?"), and goes around quoting it.His favorite page is where the lone sardine finally reunites with his school ("Sardines!Sardinessardinessardinessardines...!")But his favorite poem is the one about the stonefish.Apparently he is able to pick up on the idea of the fish pretending to be what it isn't, and he walks around saying, "Not a stonefish, no indeed!"
Hotel Deep
Does anyone know how I can contact the author about buying the artwork for this book?Kurt Cyrus is an outstanding artist and not a bad poet either.Hopefully he will grace us with a full length book at some point.My son and daughter both love his books and often look through them just for the pictures themselves and my son, who is just beginning to read, is able to follow the text.Another excellent book by the author

one of my favorites
Hotel Deep is an amazing and beautifully illustrated book. It fun to read and each poem is about the curious deep ocean and the creatures that live in it. My 4 year old loved his other book "odhopper opera" so when I saw this, i bought it. Its style is very similiar to "opera"(which is about a garden and the bugs & creatures in it) I love both books and would give them to every child I know.

5 stars for my 5 year old
My son loves me to read this to him. It is one of the few books where he is enthralled and has a great smile - sortof like when he is watching other children play. Haunting images
This was a favorite book of mine as a child - the images have stayed with me all these years, especially Oscar trying to get home at night through the dark woods. I remember finding it a little scary, but maybe that's what made it so memorable.

If you like Dolphins and want to learn more about them...
read this series. I read this series two summers ago when my friend loaned them to me. I was sick most of the summer. Even though I was stuck inside, the books took my mind to out on the ocean, and before I knew it, I felt like I was there swimming and learning about dolphins myself.
The Best Dolphin Diaries Book So Far
I thought this book was very good!Now every animal related thing I come upon makes me think of the dolphin experiences I'm having reading this addicting series.This story made me feel so many emotions...in one sad part, tears literally started welling in my eyes.This book keeps you in suspense, and there are a few unexpected parts here and there.Though some characters can be over emotional, and dolphins aren't always as friendly and inviting to people as they make them in Dolphin Diaries, I still enjoy this series, and am now feeling rather anxious to get the next book!Girls who love dolphins will especially enjoy this series, and some girls who aren't interested in dolphins may even find themselves enjoying it.

Very disappointing
The whole 'Dolphin Diaries' series was started by Lucy Daniels. Mr Baglio is v. disappointing and not nearly as good as Mrs Daniels. I mean, how would u feel if someone else wrote the next Harry Potter book when from the name it didnt even sound like the person had anything to do with JK Rowling? A Nice Book
Leaving the shallows is a fun, creative and imaginative book. Jody first sees Dawn, a humpback dolphin. Later, Dawn becomes ill, and Jody tried to warn the people who were feeding the food, which was making Dawn sick, to stop, but then one of them said that Dawn was hungry anyway. My opinion is that this book is a good story with adventures everywhere. My favourite part is the end because I like mostly happy endings. I recommend readers 7 years old and above . It is a very attractive book.

Dolphin Diaries #9
We want more!!! I have been reading this series to my son Zeke since we accidently discovered the first book while vacationing in Florida. We love it! Everything about dolphins/whales/marine biology is of great interest, and I appreciate how the author ties the tropical/aquatic themes and love of nature in with great moral lessons about understanding where different people are coming from.Many kudos for this series, and is # 10 ready yet??

more adventures with Harold
Neither my daughter nor I can tell that this is not by Crockett Johnson.Harold finds a unique way to cool off on a hot summer night.

Good
This book was good.It kind of tears at your emotions, but that only makes it more enjoyable.Once again, the dolphins always, and I mean ALWAYS being super-friendly to Jody as if they were aquatic humans can be quite annoying.After all, wouldn't mistreated captive dolphins be frightened and a little bit tense around humans?And Jody's love of dolphins can be eye-rollingly sickening as well.I mean, it's not like she just really loves them or something, she's practically OBSESSED!She cries every time something bad happens to a dolphin, and passes up fun activities just so that she can SEE them.But although those things can be bothersome, I still enjoyed this book.All of the characters had their time to shine in this book, or so it seemed, and the story, although difficult to imagine in some parts, was interesting and even kind of absorbing.I recommend this series to dolphin lovers, and girls who like unique and entertaining books.

Great illustrations, smart copy
My daughters and I enjoy everything about this book from the amazing clay-created illustrations to the singable, educational copy. After borrowing it from the library a number of times (our tried-and-true test for finding good books) we decided to purchase it. It is a perfect book for preschool kids as it reinforces number recognition, introduces unusual ocean life through playful rhymes, and, very importantly, tells them again that playing with clay or playdough is a fabulous creative activity!
