4-0 out of 5 stars A Deep Meaning

5-0 out of 5 stars "see my blood teach Death to die!"
It was hard for Nita and Kit to believe that, not very long ago, they were two young teenagers, each trying to make their way in a world that was often frustrating. Now, thanks to a book titled 'So You Want To Be A Wizard,' they've embarked on an unexpected path, they have joined with others in the fight to slow entropy - to keep the world, and the universe, ticking along their mysterious ways. But for the moment they are between assignments, vacationing with Nita's parents at the Hampton beeches.

This is my favorite book in the series!I absolutely love this one!I found the book so good that I could barely put it down for five seconds! This book is awesome and people who have read the first in the series will find this even better than the first. This book truly breaks the saying that the sequel is never as good as the first.Read it and be amazed! ... This book has fantastic colors and a fun verse.Kids will enjoy finding the hiding sea animals. Each picture offers many ways to discuss the animals. For instance, there are purple/yellow fish that appear on most of the pages that could be used as an "I spy" game. It's a great book to share with a little one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you love dolphins
My friend had all of the books, The Dolphin Diaries, written by Lucy Daniels, so after I'd finished reading them, I decided I wanted to collect them. When I went to search online, however, all the books said they were written by Ben M. Baglio and published by Scholastic. I'm so confused. Who really wrote these books? On my friend's books the only author on the front cover is Lucy Daniels. On these books I found on amazon and other sites, the author on the front cover is Ben M. Baglio. Can someone explain this to me?
3-0 out of 5 stars Neat, But...
Dolphin Diaries is a fun, and slightly addicting series. The story is entertaining, although usually unrealistic. There's a one-in-a-million chance that a wild dolpin would become so understanding, humanly, and attached to Jody as Apollo. But it makes the story interesting.
5-0 out of 5 stars One in a Million!
Anybody that sees this book might find it kind of boring. Think again. This is one of the best books that Ben M. Baglio has written. At first when I started to read this book I thought it was going to be boring, but when I got to the end of chapter one, it was so good I could not put it down. I think it is one of the best book I have ever read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that belongs in the library of every child.
Oliver is an octopus with beautiful green eyes and a constant smile.Although he doesn't believe himself to be physically challenged, Oliver only has five arms, rather than eight arms like all the other octopuses.Oliver's High Five, a children's picture book,is the story of how heventured out into the world and how he overcame the rejections he initiallyfaced. Beverly Swerdlow Brown has written several children's books andnumerous short stories and articles.Margot J. Ott has two previouspicture books to her credit. Oliver tries to find a job, but no onewants him because he is missing three arms. Then a pet shop has a bigproblem with a leaking fish aquarium.Oliver uses his five arms to plugthe leaks, catch the birds, and pet the dogs--all at one time!He showseveryone that being different isn't a measure of his abilities. RonaldM. Andiman, M.D. the Clinical Chief of Neurology at Cedars-Sinai MedicalCenter wrote the foreword to the book.He says "This is a children'sbook that deals gently with a difficult topic. The simplicity of plot andlanguage belie the complexity of issues relating to the physicallychallenged that are dealt with and hinted at in the small colorful volume. It is a book that will open up discussion, lead to further reflection andbuild greater understanding. It is a book for adults and children toshare.Books like this help to repair the world." A copy ofOliver's High Five belongs in the library of every child, whetherphysically challenged or not. It's a book that teaches them how to"focus on their abilities, not their disabilities."5-0 out of 5 stars An uplifting story with an important, contemporary message.
The plight of Oliver the Octopus and his struggle to become an accepted member of the workforce in the "world above the sea" is conveyed with warmth in this beautifully written, creatively illustrated book.Oliver's perserverance, despite the rejections he receives based upon his appearance rather than his abilities, is a potent testimony to the strength of his own self-image.The ignorance of discrimination is portrayed with honesty in a contemporary setting, which makes the book mandatory reading for all grade school educators and child therapists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations, Wonderful Colors, Hopeful Story

Editorial Review

"Once upon a time, long, long ago, where the forest runs down to the ocean, a hunter lived all alone in a house made of logs he had chopped for himself and shingles he had split for himself." 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
I read this as a child. It got stuck in my mind, but I could never remember the title, thinking of it only as the story of the Hunter and the Mermaid.I searched for it for years.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fairy tale brought to life
Every once in a while, an author manages to pull off a novel that carries with it the exact tone and magical feeling of a fairy tale. In the genre of The Last Unicorn and The Princess Bride, this beautiful story takes you into a peaceful world where a lonely hunter lives by the sea.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Animal Family
This book is truly what you would call a beautifully written piece of literature. It is the story of a lonely hunter who meets a mermaid. She comes to live with him despite being torn between her home in the sea and her love for the hunter. They live happily except that they wish for a child. Since to have a human child is not possible, the hunter first brings home a bear cub and then a lynx who become like their children. This story has a wonderful, dreamlike quality to it. The words and story flow lyrically and almost timelessly and the descriptions are simple and wonderfully vivid and beautiful. It will apeal to all ages. Children will like the funny story and gentleness of the words and teens and adults will find the deeper meaning as well as appreaciate the lovely scenes. This is a book you will want to read over and over. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating facts on a suitable level for the age group
As soon as we opened this book, my inquisitive 5-year-old was hooked. It is filled with interesting facts about ocean life, written on a level just perfect for ages 4-8 (the target age group for these books). The pictures are rich and colorful. I bought "Space", too, and now we often read these books instead of good-night stories. Each 2-page spread contains so much to see and discuss that it takes the place of a standard good-night story. So if your child is curious about the ocean and what lives in it, I would really recommend this book. (Even for older kids, frankly. My mother and I both enjoy it and learned from it. And it's much more interesting to read and look at than a typical story book.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best book on oceans for kids
I bought this book for my 5 year old who loves the ocean.Believe me we have more books on the subject than I care to think about. This one is by far the best I have seen. The photographs are superb. The knowledge is good yet simple for kids to follow and understand.I think I am having as much fun reading it as my son does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
The photos alone are worth the price.Go nose-to-nose with a fangtooth; see an octopus's eggs festooning a cave; contemplate a dolphin's teeth. My 5-year-old daughter adores this book so much that she takes it to school for Show-and-Tell.Thanks to the clarity of the description of zones, she refers to the three levels of our house as the daylight zone, twilight zone, and midnight zone. The photos are vivid, the text is clear, and you can read as many or as few nuggets of information as your kid wants to hear - they're all self-contained.You just can't miss with this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Snap along with Lucy!
This is a short book with a great lesson we all have unique talents. The fun lies in the "clicky claw" on the top of the book that you click after each page. If you get bored, you can also use it to chase your kids around the house. Click, clack, gotch-ya on the arm! This is really a fun book to have around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent idea for entertaining child while reading to them
I absolutely love these "snap fun" books in this series. It is so adorable how you read along the book and snap the little claw open and closed with the store line. My little boy finds it so cute and keeps hisattention. It appears to be pretty durable too, so I don't think it wouldfall apart too easily. Anyways, I liked it so much, I am here looking upall the other "snap" books and am going to order them fromAmazon. The price through Amazon was much better than my local store even.Oh and all the pages are the hard board type pages, not paper, so it ispretty sturdy. Anyways I highly recommend it.

Bright illustrations, cute rhymes. It's one of our favorites!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book
My fish loving 3 year old son really likes this book.He loves to look at the pictures and guess the fish at the end of the book. The only thing I don't like is the word "dumb" is used. That could have been left out since toddlers to repeat most everything they hear.I chose to buy it since it was recommended with Dinosaurumpus by Tony Mitton...now that book is absolutely awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
My children love it, except it uses the word dumb at one point and mine know they aren't supposed to use that word. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! A picture book on evolution!
An earlier reviewer was right on target when s/he said "I wish there was a whole series like this one!"This is an extremely difficult subject to find in a format that is accessible to young children.Though we read it to our son when he was 4, some of the text was difficult but at least it was an introduction to a very difficult topic that is so abstract that it's not easily accessible to young children. It continues to be great as a picture book on the topic as children enter early elementary. Most topics can be introduced to even young children, who are naturally fascinated by their world, as long as it is done in a pleasing picture format. But note, the language can still be complex; you may have to edit depending on the child's age and attention span and vocabulary level but it gives you pictures that you can use as a springboard to discuss the fascinating topic of evolution. So there should really be more of these books covering various science topics. As an adult, even I was interested in the ancestors to modern whales.(As an adjunct to the book, there is a computer graphics mini-video at the Smithsonian in Washington DC that animates the evolution of whales from land animals to sea mammals. Seeing the movie first and having this book afterwards was an amazing learning experience.)

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish there was a whole series like this one
This is a simple book which feels more like a storybook than a science book. This suits it very well to the age group it is aiming at. It is a gentle look at evolution, but because it is focused on only one animal, it can give more detail than a general book on evolution of this size. I really wish they had a series of these, each focusing on a different animal. I also liked the artwork and felt it fit well with the tone of the writing. Overall this was a hit in our family, and I often recommend it to others who are looking for evolution books for the preschool set. There are so few books for youngsters about evolution; it is a real shame. Most of us who want to expose our children to this from early on are pretty much stuck using everything that is available, whether it is particularly well done or not. This is a book I would use even if there were an abundance of books to choose from. ... Read more
