This book was very interesting for me. It had lots of up and down rising actions and lots of conflicts. The story is mainly about Captain Ahab tring to get his revenge on this bellicose whale named Mody Dick. Also at the end, there is a cataclysm that brings everything down and ends the story. Good, But I wanted a little more.
I enjoyed the book, as other reviews have mentioned, it is a good period piece about life on the Jersey shore in 1916. The author tried to touch a lot of bases and started but did not complete a lot of story lines.When I was finished, I found myself looking for another book about the events that would fill in some blanks.

It was okay....
This was more a history book about 1916. I would have liked to have had more details about the shark attacks.

Poorly Done
I started reading this tome when it came out a few years back. I gave it my best, trying to salvage what I could from Capuzzo's writing style, the subject, and anything else I could find. I cannot give this book a good recommendation to folks interested in the subject of sharks in general and the 1916 attacks in particular. I gave up reading it about a third or so through it, and have since found Dr. Richard Fernicola's book "Twelve Days of Terror", and the subsequent movie based on it far superior. ... Read more

A story of subtraction
The Sharks of Ocean City are trying to go to the state swim camp. Their coach tells them the city newspaper will sponsor the team if they can swim 75 laps in one day before the end of the week. The humorous story's plot hangs on subtracting double digits. The cutesy illustrations of fish in swimwear may be amusing to younger children, they did not appeal to me. Scary book--not for kids

Nice to read something with more detail
Tired of the same old, same old. Want to teach your preschooler more about the world. This book is great for an ocean theme unit and an alphabet unit. I have a home daycare with lots of 2 to 4 year olds and this is a favorite book. Now I don't think you are going to get your 18 month old too interested, but I find the preschoolers love the challenge of learning more about the world. I haven't tried any of Jerry Pallotta's other books, but I am planning on adding some more to my home library. Don't let your preschooler think that all things swimming in water are just called fish. Help them improve their vocabulary with this great ocean book. "A is for Alphabet Book. A is also for the Atlantic Ocean. The fish and other creatures in this book live in the North Atlantic Ocean.B is for Bluefish. Everyone loves to catch Bluefish because they love to fight. Their teeth are very, very sharp, so don't ever put your fingers in their mouths. C is for cod" and so on. very clear and colorful pictures.

we love them all!
mr pallotta's alphabet books are huge hits with both my kids, my son (who is not yet reading on his own) especially.he is fascinated with all the information in each of the books.if anything, they sparked his interest in reading after i had (almost) given up!

Educational and Entertaining
A fantastic book!I highly recommend this books if you are looking for a book that accurately describes mangrove ecology yet is very readable for young children.My 3 yr old daughter enjoys the book from beginning to end and has fun finding the different animals that live within the mangrove tangle.

loved it!
This was one of the best books I have ever read! It was about a boy who takes a trip to alaska, and is at a whaling camp. He experiences many diffrent things.overall a super duper book!I loved it and totally recommend it for anyone who loves stories about the artic!:)

Very enjoyable. The plot and the characters were just as compellingas outlined by many of the other reviewers. However, what was most valuable to me was the description of life in the arctic. Books describing something that I know absolutely NOTHING about are very valuable to me. And believe me, before reading this I knew nothing about having to eat the duck's beak from the stew in order to please the host(ess). I thought it was a fantastic first-field guide.
However, I was a little annoyed at the scarcity of the other regions in the book,mostly because I was interested in finding out about the shells within the area in which I visit to go shelling.However, I thought it wasa wonderful first-field-guide with excellent color pictures, specificdescriptions, indication of common\uncommon, and the size of the shells.

Picture Perfect
This has to be one of the most useful books I have bought. The photography is very clear.The colors are also good. Best of all I can see all of this without my bifocals.

This book is one of the greatest shell handbooks in print.
I have been collecting shells for around 20 years and never bothered toget a book about them until now. Great Illustrations
My two year old loves this book, we have to read it every night.She loves the bright pictures and the rhymes. She really gets the concept of it being the boys imagination and she likes finding the "real" bath stuff in the pictures as well.
