Editorial Review

Whether kids want to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or respectfullydecline, this straightforward and playfully illustrated guide clears up what thepledge really means--word by word, and line by line.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It already has 50 stars
I think this is a nice book to teach a child the pledge of allegiance and to explain to them what the pledge means. This book breaks down the meaning of each word and explains them in a way that children can understand. It gives the history of the pledge, a little about the flag, what to do while saying the pledge and touches on what this great country is all about. From other reviews I have read, it appears that Francis Bellamy, who authored the pledge, did not include the line "...under God".Nonetheless, it was included in this book and is the version of the pledge that I recited every morning during my school years...and it is the version I will teach my daughter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Noble try.
The goal--nicely attempted--of breaking down each line of this too-difficult-for-the-kids-who-have-to-say-it speech falls short.5-0 out of 5 stars What Our Pledge Really Means.....
Every morning millions of children stand and face the flag, place their hands over their hearts, and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. But what do these 31 words really mean?Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson have taken the pledge apart, and explained each word (pledge:A pledge is a promise), or phrase (one nation:Our states and territories have bonded together to form one nation. One nation means one country), in simple, kid-friendly language.Add to that some history, fun facts, witty asides, and the clever artwork of award winning illustrator, Chris Raschka, and you have the makings of an engaging, entertaining, and informative book.Perfect for youngsters 6 and older, I Pledge Allegiance is a creative and straightforward look at the meaning behind America's most often recited words, and works well with Syl Sobel's Our Pledge Of Allegiance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids!
We got lucky and happened to check this out from the library, but then we had to buy it!My daughter loves all the silly rhymes, plus the bright colors of the illustrations. She never gets tired of reading it!

5-0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book!!
This is a great book to read to antsy kids. My child not only istened, but got very involved with the characters, soon WE were ahippopota-family! Who can resist saying, "Hippopotamama"? The text flows beautifully and the illustrations are playful and just perfectfor this tale! If you loved the Happy Hippopotomi, then I wholeheartedlyrecommend, "The Maestro Plays" also by Bill Martin, Jr.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for reading with your children
You will really enjoy reading this book to your children. The invented words involving hippo are a fun, poetic learning experience for the listener and the reader. We laughed all the way through and the more you read it the better you get at it.Pretty soon you'll all be singing it around the house.Your child will have this one memorized in no time! ... Editorial Review

The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter LOVES this book
I actually surprisingly just bought this book earlier today and my almost 17 month old daughter already loves it.She loves the rhythm of the words and the large colorful animals. She like the fact that she is familiar with all the animals and can tell me what noise they make. I purchased the board book because she like to turn the pages on her own and I didn't want the book to be messed up.All in all. . . NO REGRETS

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to bond with your child
This is the first book that my daughter and I read every night. She points out the different animals when I read.It is a great book that teaches colors and animals.I recommend this book to every parent as first reading material with your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another favorite by the same author....
OK-I haven't read it 500 times but it IS consistently on the list of favorites. It has a bit of a thrill without getting too scary. Lavish illustrations.

In this story, which is told in rhyme, a small mouse insists on teasing acat, while the cat is lounging on a hammock, drinking ice water, andgenerally minding his own business.A chase ensues each time the mousebegins the tease and the mouse scampers back to his mother to save him.Bybooks end, the mouse has learned that it is not wise to tease. This bookis extraordinary in its illustrations. My 3 year old son never tires ofthis book. It is a well read bedtime story.Highly, highly recommended!!

Editorial Review

"In a dark, dark wood there is a dark, dark house..." So begins this tongue-in-cheek rodent tale of intrigue. Four brave and curious mice follow the trail of a big, scary beast, down the dark red stair, into the dark blue cellar, inside the dark green bottle in the dark purple cupboard. Young readers will squeal in delighted fright when the yellow-eyed monster ("A BEAST!") flies out and across the cellar, up the stairs, out of the house, and into the night. The perpetually rhyming, color-obsessed mice follow in hot pursuit. But is the beast really as horrible as it seems?Read more

Editorial Review

One young Dracula is excited to go trick-or-treating (with his mom) inhis family's apartment building on Halloween night. He visits Knicker Knocker onthe second floor, who gives him candy bars, then Slipper Slopper on the thirdfloor, whose treat is peanut cups. Wiggle Waggle on the fourth floor fills hisbag with tangerine drops. The story continues in this vein until the youngvampire visits the inhabitant of the 10th floor: Magic Merlin. But what's this?Magic Merlin has no treats, but a trick! He waves a magic wand and decreeseverything to be "Wackbards!" As little Dracula works his way back down theapartment floors, everything is indeed backwards. Now, it's all tricks! WiggleWaggle is Waggle Wiggle, and instead of tangerine drops, he offers whirling, twirling drangerine tops. Slipper Slopper is now Slopper Slipper and gives him afurry litter of ceanut pups instead of peanut cups. (One of the best and mostinteresting aspects of this book is illustrator Paul Meisel's wacky visualinterpretations of these wackbards words.) Of course, by the time little Draculagets home, the power of his daddy's hug breaks Merlin's spell and they "laughedand laughed" and "ate and ate." 5-0 out of 5 stars The Maestro Plays
Bill Martin does another fabulous job! When read aloud, this book is musical and rythmical. It introduces children to rhyming words and is good for building children's ability to distinguish the ending sounds of words. All in all, this is a fun book to read and listen to.My preschool students love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book that I recommend.Another book I really like for bedtime is Now I Know the 10 Commandments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its Great
I have always loved Brown Bear but this takes it to a whole new level adding the God touch just makes it wonderful to own, share at Sunday School, etc. Its catchy just like Brown Bear and you find yourself repeating it over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to Bible Characters!
I love this book- especially the hardback edition! My son reads it every night as his "night-night" book and he has it memorized! I also gave it to my best friend as a gift for her daughter and it is the book they read together every night. My son can tell you many answers to Bible questions because this book help to introduce some key characters, and gave us an opportunity to elaborate on the stories and also sing the songs that he knows about some of these characters! (I must admit- David is his favorite!) This hardback one is out of print- so if you ever find it- get it quick! It is a treasure!

3-0 out of 5 stars not the best sticker book
This sticker book has some points to recommend it -- the vinyl stickers and glossy pages mean that the stickers really are reusable, the story itself is proven entertaining by the many children and parents who love it, and the colors are very cheery.Given that, however, this doesn't really make a very good sticker book.Maybe if the letters on the pages were just outlines and kids stuck the stickers over the outlines it would be a little more fun, or maybe if there were another scene after the storybook where you could place the stickers it would be fun, but as it is all you do is plaster the sticker over an identical picture of the letter within the action of the story -- not really interesting or challenging, and a bit expensive for the privilege.Just my opinion, but you'd be better off buying a nice big edition of this fun book rather than getting this sticker edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars These stickers do NOT stick!
Chicka chicka abc is a great book for little ones. My daughter memorized it on first reading (2 yrs old). But this sticka version of the book is not worth the money. We just received our copy from ... and the "reuseable' stickers do not stick. They come off almost immediately and my daughter is NOT impressed. Neither am I. Save your money, get the abc book or the full length version for an older child and try some of the many online book related activities you can find for this book on the web. For example my daughter and I just printed out a coconut tree picture and then using normal alphabet stickers we had in the house she proceeded to recreate the letters climbing up the coconut tree. MUCH more fun!

1-0 out of 5 stars Good for learning letters
My two and a half year old daughter does enjoy this book when I read it to her and help her with the stickers. It is nice that the stickers are actually vinyl and can be reused easily. If your child is into sticker books, however, this one could be a disapointment. It just has letters...not too much of interest there. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Made
What a disappointment. I can't believe how cheaply made this book is. I am glad I got in on sell or I would have returned it. The caring case is a zip lock bag. The pages can be easily ripped off. The pages are not plain paper and you put a mental page behind the story page. I could have do this on my own with the cheaper and FULL version of this book. The Magnet letters are VERY tiny. It really wasn't even worth the sell price. I'm a home daycare provider and I really feel ripped off. Shame on the makers of this book. The are some wonderfully made Magnet learning books by Top That! Including Counting with Magnetic Numbers (Magnetic Play and Learn) I wish I got more of these books instead

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to learn lowercase letters
We had read the original book before, this one is half that story, but it is long enough for a little one to work through each page with the magnets.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cute idea
My 27-month old daughter loves this book.Sometimes she needs help opening the bag containing the letter magnets, but she will sit for quite a while independently trying to match the letters with their pictures in the book. Or we can read the story and work together with the magnets. The page following the story with the alphabet listed is also helpful in getting her to recognize the letters as we sing the song. ...
