4-0 out of 5 stars Math can be fun!
My children really enjoy Stuart Murphy's Math Start series. They introduce children to simple math concepts in a colorful format.Of course, you can't expect your children to learn all of their math skills by reading picture books, but they are great supplemental material. And they are great to read to preschoolers so that when it does come time to learn math in school, it is not a completely foreign subject.Spunky Monkeys on Parade is a fun book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Spaceship Earth - book to read on Earth Day
Consisting of thirty-two pages we begin You're Aboard Spaceship Earth by viewing a shuttle blasting off into space. For anyone living in Florida this is an awesome sight to take in as well as listening as the shuttle orbits. There are times when landings must take place in California when Florida is having severe weather problems and this is worth observing as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised
My son received this book as a gift from his first grade teacher for entering a project into the science fair. He enjoys reading this book over and over again. This book has made him think about all the different types of animals and how the envoriment can cause them harm. This book gives the description of the animal, size, location and what may be the cause of their extinction. It not only teaches about the worlds rarest animals but in the back of the book there is a world map of all the locations listed within the book. I believe that this book is great for educating our children on both science and geography. I would recommend this book to any science and animal lover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great concept
I think this book is a great way to introduce beginning math concepts. There is also a section at the back of the book with suggested questions and some activities to further extend the concepts presented. As for comments on the rhyming, I thought it was well done. Any of the "awkward rhymes" were so "barely there" that I hardly noticed them (only because I was looking for them). I felt that it contained enough rhymes to maintain interest but not so many that you are focusing on the rhymes and not the concepts presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math=Fun
A wonderful way to introduce the math concepts of comparing amounts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awkward rhymes but still fun
A young rabbit and his mother go to the store to pick-up a few things: carrots, peanuts and worms (!). As the mother rabbit picks up different quantities, the young rabbit whines and complains (in a cute way) about the amounts. The mother rabbit compares the amounts to other shoppers in the store using the terms more, fewer and same. Graphics summarize the terms for each item.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This book misses the boat
If I were editing the book I would have told the author I want it to look like this: 10 pages on the idea of the weather channel and how it got to cable, 5 page pictoral of hot weather channel chicks, 12 pages on big storms the network has covered, 2 pages on how much of a weeny Paul Goodloe is and 230 pages on Jim Cantore. Folks, Jim Cantore IS the weather channel. He is on the edge of your seat entertainment that dares weather to take him on. Whether he is chasing after ann F-5 tornado with a paddle to stop it, surfing the waves of a cat 5 hurricane or reporting from a blizzard in a speedo, Cantore takes the worst mother nature has to offer and laughs at it. Yes, there are some other strong anchors at TWC like Sharon Resultan, Dr. Paul Kocin and Dr. Steve Lyons, but they are cluttered up by goofs like Goodloe and Bob Stokes. Stephanie Abrams is pretty hot. Cantore needs to pull a Sting and just leave the weather channel. If there were a cable channel just called Cantore that featured Jim going to places with the most horrible weather in the world, I would watch 24/7. I do realize Cantore can't do 24 hours worth of shows, but he would have to give his approval for any show on the network. If it gets Cantore approval, it's must see TV. This book missed out on a chance to tell the legend's story, but it does mention him so it's a good read.

3-0 out of 5 stars interesting but......
This book is a business story of how The Weather Channel became one of the leading media brands in the nation. It is not a "behind the scenes at TWC" tale, although a few pages in the "afterword" give readers a brief glimpse at how it all comes together on air. 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting look at a media success
This is an interesting book, using the Weather Channel as an example of the birth of specialized channels in the early cable market. Now we take the plethora of channels available to us as a given (57 channels and nothing on), yet in the early days it was a fight to get a new channel carried over cable systems. The Weather Channel succeeded through a strong idea, people that believed in it, and being on the cutting edge of technology. While I expected this to be a straight story of the birth and growth of the Weather Channel, I was surprised to find that it was that, as well as a musing upon communications, and what makes a successful channel, and a successful company. The actual history is only a bit over half the book. The rest looks at the technology involved, and the lessons of leadership, and new ventures. Finally it concludes with some interesting first person stories of experiences in the building of the channel. An interesting read. Not exactly what I expected, but still a fascinating glimpse behind getting a specialized cable channel up and running, and successful for 20 years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anno's Math Games II
This is a beautifully designed book, very inviting to the eye.The book translates mathematical concepts into pictures and little stories which are, not incidentally, visually fascinating. The concrete and specific examples illustrated give children a pathway to the abstractions behind them, teaching them to think and use their native curiosity to develop knowledge. But didactic function of the book, as well thought out as it is, is almost secondary to the pleasure of taking in the beautiful designs and drawings.I think this is a book that a child will remember into adulthood. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
This book is a great educational, but fun book for children ages 3-6 years old. This book was written by Stuart J. Murphy, and illustrated by Holly Keller.Stuart Murphy has written many books. He has a series called Math Start, for children; there are 60 books in the series with over 60 million copies sold. This book is his first published (1996).It is a great book for children, to help them start on a path to learning size relationships. It has picture of different bugs and animal and asks "Which is smallest? Which is the biggest? Although it is without a plot, the book has great pictures, and would be excellent for a short bed time story. The kindergarten group that I read this book to really enjoyed it, I had to read it more than once to them!

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Bug Parade... 2.5 Stars
I like the MathStart Series *in general* but I wish there was more consistency from book to book."Henry the Fourth" which explored ordinal numbers was great. The story had a cute plot and it kept my children's interest."Missing Mittens"(which was all about even and odd numbers) had a clumsy rhyme and itwasn't nearly as good. This book about comparing-and-contrasting sizes is different still. It has too few words and virtually no plot.Take a look at the sentences from the first *3 pages*:
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for younger readers
This is a great book to teach size relationships as well as some basic reading words. The illustrations are great. However, I think the recommended age range (4-6)is a little off.My two year old loves thebook, a friends 4 year old thinks its boring and too short. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Math Book
My kids aged 5 and 6 really enjoyed the book. Especially since i doubled up the reading with a simultaneous activity with 12 dolls/toy figures put together in a line. As we read, the kids arranged the 12 dolls in the same manner that the teacher in the book wants from her students. My younger child who is not very comfortable with numbers, got to play around with 12 pieces understanding that they can be arranged any which way to add up to 12 all the time. She also taught herself to learn to make x number of rows with equal number of kids. My older daughter immediately got the concept that 4 rows of 3 kids means the number 3 kept in a row 4 times, which i told her means 3 multiplied by 4. Another thing that happened was that the kids learnt the meaning of 'a dozen' and 'pairs' and 'rows'. English is not our mother tongue and though the kids speak english most of the time, specialised words such as these dont get to be spoken.
