5-0 out of 5 stars Another hit from Aliki
I love the Let's Read and Find Out science series, and Aliki is one of my family's favorite authors, so this book is a real winner for us.Clearly written text and lovely illustrations make for an enjoyable read-aloud for K-2 level students, or an informative read-alone book for older kids or early readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A review of the record of fossils for children Ages 5 and up
Fossils tell of long ago is a good book for children.Brightly illustrated pictures help them grasp the facts of fossils. It includes a fun experiment, too, along with a clear explanation of how fossils were made.I give this book four stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Aliki's blatant attempt at political correctness.
While this book is still a decent introduction to fossils for children, I'm giving it two stars because it is a VERY different book from the original (published in 1972, I believe) that I read and loved as a child. Ipurchased this version thinking it would be the same as the original(except for the different cover and perhaps some updates to the informationtherein). Well, I was wrong. ALL of the illustrations have changed (NOT forthe better, either, in my opinion). There are now children of every huepictured, and even a black boy in a wheel chair. How nice. This is what allchildren's books of the future will look like, apparently. (Classicchildren's books that don't include pictures of kids from various ethnicgroups will need to be re-illustrated.) Aliki, why did you mess with aperfectly good original?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Math is Fun Again
Just by using a simple deck of cards, Dr. Karol Yeatts has put together many activities that will help children practice skills in mathematics in a fun and exciting format. As a teacher of low-performing students,I have found a great deal of success when using many of these games with my students. These activities also remind me of the fun I used to have as a child when I played card games with friends and family. Dr. Yeatts has made learning Fun again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For older end of age range
I picked this up at our local library after we watched chicks hatch at a display at our local fair. This was a little too much information for my 4 1/2-year-old. We have read many Stage 1 books from this series; this is the first one I've seen at this level that addresses reproduction. In very simple terms it talks about "mating" and "fertilization." Be prepared to respond to questions about this topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this book 4.5 stars...
My 3-year-old daughter is crazy about all the creepy crawly critters of the world, so I knew she would love this book, and her father and I think it's pretty cool as well. The cut paper illustrations are wonderful to look at, and the text is quite informative for readers of any age, yet it's accessible to even young preschoolers like mine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with this series
This book is a very good resource for study/teaching at the primary grade levels. The cut paper illustrations are beautiful and engaging. The text more than holds its own by giving young readers a chance to observe and compare many different kinds of insects andeven an arachnid or two. Readers learn for themselves precisely 'what makes an insect an insect', while at the same time picking up a few good science vocabulary words and catching a glimpse of several dozens of different insects, (all of which are identified at the back of the book). Also included is a page with several suggestions for follow up activities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute Beginning Math Book - a review of "Animals on Board"
Interesting comments (below) about this book, BUT I have to say that we didn't even notice the fact that the equations and the sequence of the numbers didn't match until I read the reviews here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Addition left to right
I disagree with the last reviewer. As a first grade teacher, I liked that the number sentences demonstrated the commutative property (could that be why the author had the animals commuting? LOL)Our class could discuss how the sentence 5+2 is the same as 2+5 for example - regardles of which group on what truck was counted first the total animals is the same.We could make trucks and put our own little animal on them, and write our own # sentences in our own little books - changing the order of the trucks and getting the same result.(Part-part-whole concept.)A child shouldn't be taught that adding two quantities works only one direction and it's either right or wrong based on the direction you write the # sentence.5+2 =7 is the same as 2+5=7. Even 7=5+2 or 7=2+5 is correct! I appreciate that that the numbers are commutable in this text!
3-0 out of 5 stars Orientation problems
The concept for the book is very nice: adding everyday objects. The problem comes in the way the drawings are done. On one page, we see a truck carrying three tigers. On the next page, a truck carrying two more tigers follows the first. Below is a billboard with the equation: 3+2=5. Enter the problem. Whereas in the equation the number 3 is on the left, in the illustration the picture of the truck with the three tigers is on the right side. Similarly, the 2 in the equation is to the right of the 3, in the drawing the truck with the two tigers is on the far left. It would have been *much* nicer if the layout of the equation and the layout of the truck corresponded to one another. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nest Full of Eggs
My 5 year old son and I found this to be a very enjoyable book.I appreciate this book because it is so informative, yet reads more like a story than a textbook. The story begins in the Spring as the robin buildsher nest and lays her eggs.It continues as the eggs hatch, and the birdsgrow up. The story closes as the birds leave in late September and explainsthat they will return the next Spring.I feel this "Full Circle"approach is very helpful to young learners. All throughout the book thisstory uses new words for children to learn and very naturally weaves thedefinitions into the story. The illustrations are a tremendous asset asthey help to reinforce the new words. There are several processes shown step by step such as the development within an egg and the building of anest. They are clearly and delightfully explained and also very wellillustrated. I sometimes come across a children's book that captures myattention, yet fails to interest my son. What value does such a book haveit it fails to reach the audience it was written for?I find this is notthe problem with "A Nest Full of Eggs" as it is entertaining forboth adults and children, while having the substance adults would like toteach to children. It is written for children yet does not talk down tothem. This book is a part of a larger series called,"Let's read andFind out Science".I have also enjoyed reading others in the seriesand would highly recommend investigating this series. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book - especially nice for the firefighter fan!
Be sure to grab this one particularly if you have little ones who really like firefighters. Its main characters are firefighters, trying to get dressed for the big parade, but they don't have the correct amount of buttons. They have a variety of sizes and shapes but they must be able to sort them in such a way that each firefighter has a set of four. There is a typo in the beginning that talks about the number os sets - it says there needs to be four sets of three instead of three sets of four, but other than that, it's just a great little book. My little one wants it read repeatedly each night. What a great way to start your toddler off right, particularly if you have a boy who loves firetrucks and firefighters! Highly recommend!
