4-0 out of 5 stars Colorful illustrations
this is a nice series of non-fiction books for preschoolers to improve their vocabulary. All the pages are full of bright colorful illustrations and their is lots of reading and information. This would be a nice series for a 3rd grader to read, maybe fourth grade. One or two paragraphs per page. I often read these to my preschoolers or just look at the pages with the 1 and 2 year olds. Books have held up well.

4-0 out of 5 stars What Good Is Snow?
Rather than attempting to explain how snow is made, this book discusses the good and bad things about snow. For instance, snow protects plants and animals from harsh winds and can keep things warm. However, snow can also bury food for animals and cause floods in the spring. This book is fairly easy for pre-schoolers to understand though there are a few difficult words they have trouble understanding at first (thermometer and temperature). The illustrations that accompany the text are colorful, yet not overpowering. A great science book to use for preschoolers when talking about winter.

4-0 out of 5 stars General Introduction to Snow
Rather than go into the science of how snow is formed, this book discusses the effects of snow... Snow protects plants and hibernating animals from wind and cold and, in the spring, melted snow waters the new plants. The book also discussed the dangerous conditions snow can cause. The colorful illustrations and subject of the text make it a good book for a pre-kindergarten curriculum. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Explains doubling math concept
This is a pretty cute book.At first, the little farmer boy has five ducks for which to care and he describes a typical day that that many ducks require. He explains how much food they need, their bath, and how they go to bed. However, when they all go out for a walk one day, they each bring back a friend, doubling the little farmer's efforts. So, now he needs double the food, double the straw and double the hands and asks for a friend too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Your Skin and Mine
Detailed explanations on the two layers of skin and feeling your skin. Your Skin and Mine centers around four kids, Mary, Henry, Mark and the other one is a boy who is telling the story and never offers his own name for the reader to learn. On page 24 they go into detail on melanin, which is grains of color to protect the body from the sun. He states that Mark's skin makes a lot of this while Henry and Mary's skin does not. There is no explanation on how he knows this or why it is different.
5-0 out of 5 stars Have fun observing.
My five year old is intrigued by this book. Although the book suggests using a magnifying glass to do so, the observations it asks the reader to make can largely be done by the eye. I read it to him at night and, lying in bed,he and I look at our own skins and spot the similarities and differences in a gentle game of observation. It encourages the act of looking at the familiar with a new and curious eye. And the information it gives is solid and uncondescending. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars an archaeologist's opinion
From an archaeologist's point of view, that the "artifact" used for show and tell is a wood hoop with strings (and would not be preserved in most archaeological contexts) is the minor problem. The major problem is that Great Aunt Jane, the archaeologist, has an "artifact" in her trunk instead of in a curation facility.Ethical archaeologists do not keep the artifacts they find. The book could have Arnold find a replica made of one of Auntie's discoveries. In its favor, the book does emphasize "it's not what you find [i.e. the artifact] but what you find out" that's important.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
I liked reading this book, because it was easy to read and understand. I thought that the book was funny and interesting. The class had show and tell and Arnold brought something in to show that was very interesting. No one knew what it was. They try to find out what it is and where it came from by going on a trip with there teacher. By reading this book, you will find out what exactly happened on their trip and what it is what Arnold brought in for show and tell!Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was expecting a book of activities to liven up math.Instead, it is just a book of worksheets.Mostly problems where the learner uses the answer in a crossword, wordsearch, or some other type of puzzle.I'm looking for activities to work with students in groups of 3-5.Projects or activities to give us a break from lecture and homework. This is definitely not it.I was led to believe this book was for 6-12, but I would rate it for 6-8.

2-0 out of 5 stars ok for math but not a book for us...
This book is fine for teaching patterns, it's main intent.I have a problem with the behavior of the kids however.First, the older brother doesn't share and his parents have no problem with this.Secondly, the younger child sneaks around misbehaving and ignoring both of her parents and her brother yet she's rewarded with a gift.We won't be reading this one again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beep, Beep, Vroom, Vroom
I used this book as a follow-up to our math patterning unit in my Kindergarten class. As I read the book, the students manipulated unifix cubes to copy the various patterns throughout the story. It was a great hit and certainly a good review of the patterning concept.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read!
My children LOVE this book.Don't think that because this is a "math" book it will be uninteresting! The repetition of the car sounds (beep beep, vroom vroom, crash crash) holds even my 1 and 3 year olds attention. It is fun to read and the author gives you some ideas in the back of the book to try while reading the book. You can read it for fun or point out patterns, colors, or even talk about sharing or asking permission. It is a wonderful book for a boy or a girl.I am giving this book as gifts because my girls enjoy it so much. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures and Paintings!
Half of this book is about famous paleontologists, what dinosaurs are, and how they became extinct. The next half has at least 80 pictures and paintings of different species of dinosaurs, and a description of their characteristics and how they live.I would especially recommend it to 11 and 12 year olds who know their dinosaurs.WARNING:This is not a little kid's book.It does contain A LOT of information. It has at least a page on each species of dinosaur, but I think it should go into even more detail on these amazing animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting, surprising book
I got this book as a gift. From the first page, I knew that I liked it! The detailed pictures show texture and are colorful. It is easy to read and understand. On each page there are different boxes with crafts you can do and interesting facts. 5-0 out of 5 stars A real sleep aid....
This is a brilliant book.I purchased it when my 2.5 year old son was refusing to sleep to try to explain to him that everyone sleeps, and why everyone sleeps. I could relate the facts in the book to things he understood, including when Caroline (a character in the book) goes to sleep and how she gets cranky when she doesn't get her nap.Thereafter he would say he needed his sleep so that he wasnt cranky like Caroline! He loves reading the book before nap and bed time - and the last few pages about drifting off to sleep help him unwind and relax ready for his own sleep.I also learnt a few things from this book - who knew that chickens eyelids go up, or that snakes have no eyelids! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The kids work together for a natural treasure
My five year old son and three year old daughter have been enjoying this book for over a year. The older child finds the story exciting and gains satisfaction from better understanding the world around him. The younger child enjoys how the characters she's come to know so well morf into creatures she's familiar with from visits to the aquarium and the fishmonger.

Ms. Frizzle takes her class on a field trip to the depths of the ocean to observe the coral reefs up close and learn life that found in reefs. The book, like all the other Magic School Bus books, teaches a lot, and has a moral. In this story the reader can learn a lot about the coral reefs of the sea, and what kind of creatures live there. The moral of this story is to work together to achieve your goals. Children between the ages of 4 and 6 would probably enjoy this book. ... Read more
