5-0 out of 5 stars Sparks Interest in Octopuses at Young Ages
I checked this book out for my 4 year old (and 2 year old twins) since our booklist recommended it for studying the letter "o".We thought it was interesting and fabulous. We enjoyed the illustrations and the facts. We happened to have also checked out an octopus puppet with which we made up our own stories based on the facts we learned from the book.I found it interesting enough that I guess I hadn't realized that there wasn't a plot.I guess fact is better than fiction!

5-0 out of 5 stars Octopus's Garden
I liked this book because I learned alot of facts. The pictures were really cool and I liked learning how they disguise themselves and how the mother octopus lays here eggs near her den where she can watch them.It is sad because she dies after the babies hatch. I recommmend this book for all ages.

3-0 out of 5 stars some amazing facts, but visually dull.
Lauber's _An Octopus is Amazing_ is a decent introductory book on the topic, probably best suited to children aged 4-8.There are no photographs. The book is illustrated on each page with color drawings. The drawing on the book cover is indicative of the quality of the drawings throughout. It's a bit cartoonish.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars they won't even know they're learning math
This book is amazing for children. I actually grew up reading this book, and I am now majoring in math. Anno's books teach kids the concepts of math, without confusing them with all the math words. This is perfect for small children, because they can easily understand the concepts in this book - like "Which of these things is not like the other", pairing coats and pockets to make a coat with pockets, different colored hats, etc. Don't be put out if your small child can't do arithmetic right after reading this book - it is not intended to teach arithmetic, but instead to teach the cognitive skills necessary to master arthimetic LATER. I say read it to your toddler, your elementary school children, your high schooler, anyone can benefit from this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars There might be... but not in our solar system, says Branley
By relating famous hoaxes such as the radio broadcast of H.G. Well's War of the Worlds and discussing recent space probes to Mars, Mercury and Venus, Branley comes to the conclusion that there might be life beyondEarth... but not in our solar system. While he admits there may bepossibilities of life in other galaxies, he claims there most likely isn'tlife in our solar system except for what exists on Earth. This is anoutdated and inaccurate view. The goal of the series is to introduce basicscience concepts to young children, but the only concept I came away withwas very Earth-centric - none of our species could live on Mars, ergo, there is no life on Mars. Branley never defines life. In truth, we cannotassume "life" to be carbon based, requiring warm temperatures andsunlight. In fact, on our very own planet we have found species that do notrequire these things. Instead of writing "there is no life onMars," Branley should have written, "There is no life as we knowit today on Mars. If this idea is too scary for young children, perhapsthere isn't a need for a low-level book on this topic. At the least, thebook serves as a jumping off point for an interesting discussion. Theauthorial intrusion in the book ("People also say it's silly tobelieve there is life on them [other planets]. I don't think so.") isannoying and condescending. The writing is too simplified; children couldhandle more details than are given about the planets, the space program, and the various ways alien life has been envisioned in our culture. Theillustrations are a bizarre mix of simple brightly colored collage stylepictures and photographs. The diagram of the solar system is great, andwhimsical aliens decorate the end papers and many pages. A page of furtheractivities concludes the book. No works are cited, no resources for moreinformation are listed. A glossary, index and timeline would have beenappropriate inclusions. This book was originally published in 1984; itneeds much more overhaul than it received.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic and Educational

4-0 out of 5 stars It's About Time.... a timely book
This book by Stuart Murphy is part of his MathStart series. It covers time by relating the hours of the day to a little boy's activities: waking up, meals, going to school, playing, going home, story time, nap time, bath time, going to bed, etc.[If you are wondering about the early morning hours, they are spent frolicking with some friendly dream-monsters that dance and caper about.]

5-0 out of 5 stars Hats off to Anno
As a child I totally adored this book & I still love it now I'm older. The illustrations are charming and clear, and Anno manages to explain some really complicated concepts in a very simple way. The book teaches you how to make logical deductions in a series of fun, easy steps until by the end of the book you can solve really complicated puzzles. It's a real brain workout but fun at the same time - every child should have a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clever and challenging way to teach math concepts
As a preservice teacher, I used this book to write a lesson plan in mathematics for the elementary school level. This book even boggled mymind at times!Nozaki and Anno use hat "tricks" to developbinary logic and teach children the process of elimination.Kids willdefinitely feel a great sense of accomplishment as they begin to understandthe concepts behind the hatter's tricks. The authors' creative"Shadowchild" character actively involves the reader andchallenges him/her to figure out how the hatter is working his magic.Thisbook is great for recreational reading or teaching.Highly recommended fordeveloping critical thinking skills and integrating subjects at home or inschool. ... There's something quite spellbinding about this book about Zoe, "The Greatest Gymnast of All." The illustrations are colorful andenergetic. The text (with simple demonstrations of opposites) is rollickingfun: "On and off, short and long. I do it all 'cause I'm so strong.I'm zipping, zooming Zoe." My 2 1/2-year-old daughter wants this oneagain and again. She even mimics the actions of the young gymnast as sherolls and flips. This book is a big winner at our house. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2* Round Up!
A group of coyotes wearing bright Hawaiian shirts (and a non-conformist in plaid) satisfy their mathematical and gustatory appetites in this clever "Mathstart" series book (Level 2; ages 6 and up).The Coyotes -- Clever, Cool, Careful, Clumsy, and young Little One--look out over the desert from the porch of their ranch. There are roadrunners everywhere, but no subpoenas. (The book judiciously omits crates labeled "ACME" label, or coyotes named "Wile E.")"'There must be hundreds of them!' said Cool Coyote." The coyotes separate to verify this, but Clever Coyote (after failing to catch a running roadrunner) claims, "I bet I can do it in my head and come really close."When Clever Coyote rounds the individual number counts to the nearest ten and adds them, his estimate is only two more than the actual count. In similar fashion, the coyotes compare their counts and rounded estimates of tasty grasshoppers and zebra-tailed lizards.

This book is perfect for young readers. The pictures are highly detailed and they suit the story very well. The setting of the story is during a school picnic at school.
