5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Inquiry-Based Lesson Starter!
This wonderful book is a great way to begin a lesson on rocks and minerals! It's imaginative and beautifully written. My third grade class loved it!I will use it every year to begin our inquiry-based science unit on rocks and minerals! The creative way to classify rocks was a very nice way to begin the topic of rocks and minerals with the students! We even started our own collection, using Christian's unique way of classifying them!

4-0 out of 5 stars New to Saxon
I am new to saxon as well as to homeschooling . I recently bought this book. I only give it four stars because I have not yet proven it with my children. The book appears to be very well done. The reviewer who complained about the use of words like "some and some more",and "larger, smaller ,and difference", did not look very closely at the book. Those terms are used in conjunction with word problems, which is completetely acceptable. Who ever did words problems where they expliciltly tell you add this or subtract that.So the book is actually teaching the concept that when you see word problems with phrases like,"some more" it's going to be an addition problem. The reason Americas youth are doing so poorly is not because of books like this, it's because not enough of them are using books like this.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Some, some more"??
My son is currently using this text in the fourth grade, and I was appalled when I flipped through his book the other day. Instead of seeing simple, common terminology such as "add" or "subtract", I saw "some, some more" and "larger, smaller, difference". What this book has done is take basic concepts that are familiar to nine-year-olds and convoluted them, apparently trying to make simple tasks even easier. With books like these, which fail to use standard terminology, it's no wonder that America's youth is struggling with math skills. Addition and subtraction are basic skills that all students must know, and this book is doing our bright kids a disservice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saxon IS best!:o)
We started homeschooling with Saxon.Strayed over the years, as there are so many different math programs out there for homeschoolers to try!But guess where we ended-up?!Yep, back with Saxon Math!It is absolutely wonderful!:o)I don't have experience with the newer 3rd editions, but the 2nd edition has suited us just fine!:o)We plan to stick with it now...no need to stray again!LOL!:o) ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate Anachronisms
This is generally a good book about the Pythagorean Theorem.I was disappointed, however, that someone did not catch the gross anachronisms before publication. In the book young Pythagorus travels to Alexandria, Egypt. However, Pythagoras was born (as the book points out) around 569 BC.This predates Alexander the Great by more than 200 years.Of course Alexandria would not have existed before Alexander the Great. Also as Pythagoras' ship approaches Alexandria, you can see the great lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, in the background. The lighthouse wasn't built, however until around 271 BC - even after Alexander's death.I know it's just a fictional children's book, but come on.Our children deserve a little better research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pythagoras made easy!
This is probably the most enjoyable way I have come across to teach Pythagorean Theorem to my children. It's one of those special books which children will read without realising they are learning a mathematical concept.Highly recommended to teachers and parents grappling with this sometimes difficult topic! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Class Activity
I have gone into the classrooms of 4 of my children when they were in 3rd grade and learning fractions armed with this book and a Hershey's bar for each child.I use cardboard cutouts in the shape of the Hershey's bar and use the overhead projector. It's a fun project and a great book that makes the kids excited about fractions, and gives the teacher a little, much-deserved, break.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
The Hershey's Milk Chocolate Fractions Book will help teach children the concept of dividing a whole into fractions in a fun and wonderful way. It begins with a huge Hershey bar being unwrapped to show it's 12 blocks. Each page takes away a fraction of the bar.The remaining fraction is colorfully illustrated by a crew of little people who cart their painting tools from page to page, leaving paint spills and footprints. I read this book to a class of 3rd graders just getting into fractions and they loved it.We used our math manipulatives to see the fractions as they were broken down.It was a wonderful way to begin a lesson!

This is a great book for helping your child to learn the order of numbers from 1 - 70.My son did fine with the 1 - 20 range. Then when we went to the 20 - 30 range, he seemed to get confused about how the number sequences worked. We went to another connect the dot workbook to do more practice with 1 - 30 numbers. We also played number games to help him grasp the pattern for how numbers increase. After he grasped this concept, we were able to continue just fine with the book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars My 7th Grade Math Book
Math Thematics Book 2 is my 7th grade math book, I am in Trans Math and so my class is able to move quickly through the book, the Math 7 class is going slowly.(Page 287 versus page 215)In this math book you are able to move unhurriedly or rapidly and that matters.I think that this book is good because it teaches such a broad range of mathematical techniques and new ideas.Last January I took the SAT (the real college-bound senior's test) and I got a pretty good score on the mathematical section, even though I'm not much of a math person. The only two things I don't like about the book are: 1) I don't know when I will have to use the problem: 10x-(-6)*17n (as an example) and 2) I truly don't like the way it incorporates things such as the search and rescue team having to go 5 miles to the site and if they are going 67 mph but they have to go 2 miles out of their way....I just want to learn the math, you know?I don't care what the search and rescue team needs to know to get to the site of the accident.Overall, though, I think that Math Thematics Book 2 is a good math book and I'm learning a lot so I can be in Algebra next year. ... I was looking for a math workbook for review over the summer for my rising 3rd grader who has some trouble with math. This was a teacher recommendation but I was disappointed with its content.I felt the book was overpriced for what it offered. There were very few worksheets to let your child practice basic exercises. Most of the book contained ideas on games and required pulling together various pages out of the book along with items from around your home. This book is very much concept oriented, not practice oriented. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This book makes no sense.
I am in a pre-calculus class, and we use this book. The book teaches logic in the first chapter, and after that every definition in the book is written in logic. There are problems in here that are extremly difficult and when you try to figure out the answer or how to solve them it just says that you should have learned it in a previous course, maybe this is tru but I do not think that is a reason not to put any kind of an explanation. I know that in my class the teacher teaches strictly from this book, and uses all of tests and quizzes that come with it in the teachers edition. Nobody, except in 5 or 6 rare circumstances has ever passed a test or quiz. Even in these 5 or 6 times that someone does pass a quiz or test it is within a D range. Nobody in our class has learned and calculus, or even anything that could be called pre-calculus. When we have problems the teacher suggests that we consult the book, but no one can make any sense from it. The language is so convoluted, and makes use of strange symbols that most of us had never seen before, and the book just assumes that we had them in a previous course. I realize that the book is part of a series, but there should be a symbol key or something. The teacher allows retakes where she gives us all the answers before we take it so it is not hard to do well, but this does not lead to an understanding of the math. Without these retakes every person in the class would be failing. I don't think that this should be the case in a class composed of reasonably intelligent people. Somebody should be able to pass this class but it has not yet happened. The questions on the exams sometimes don't seem to have any connection to the chapter that we did. The entire class is struggling to learn this material, we have been for an entire year, and it has proved impossible so far. I don't think that this textbook sets reasonable expectations of the students. It should not be used in my opinion, if the results of our class our any indication of other peoples experiance with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best for Its Kind
One day when I looked at the section of my UCSMP Geometry textbookdiscussing what UCSMP was all about, I decided that it would be a good ideato get the rest of the series. It wasn't until late-July 2000 that Iactually bought this UCSMP Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics, when I wasflipping through the book in Mr. Kwak's room, reading every word, enchanted. There was no better way for me than go to the nearest store andbuy this book.Read more
