5-0 out of 5 stars Professor of Gemology aka Jasper
This book is excellent for everyone.Perfect combination of words and pictures. The things I found to be useful are the descriptions for each gemstone and they have a list of what each gemstone may possibly be confused with. They also give you alternative names for gemstones and the history of the name with its meaning. If you are interested in gemstones this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference!!!
I use this book constantly as a reference in my hobby. It not only has complete descriptions of the gemstones, but the color pictures are marvelous and include not just one, but MANY pictuers of the gemstones in the rough, polished and cut states. You will be glad you purchased this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What the others did not say...
I am going to leave out any helpful information given by the previous reviews, and say what impressed me most about this fantastic little guide. Its size is perfect, the hardback made me happy because it arrived just after another field guide (petersons) which fell apart, losing pages when I first looked into it, and this book looks like it will endure for some time, so yeah! for quality of workmanship, and there are layers and layers of information in this referance.

5-0 out of 5 stars My number-loving 4 year old can't get enough!
My son LOVES this book! It is now one of his favorites, along with The Greedy Triangle. My son is high-functioning autistic and is obsessed with numbers - he loves to play with calculators, adding machines, and cash registers. So this book was right up his alley. He seems to be understanding the math lessons behind the book, as well, so it is both entertaining and educational for him. Highly recommended for math-curious kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars They use this book at my child's school to teach math concepts.
This book was sent home with 100 unifex cubes to use along with the book.We used the cubes as the ants.We started off with one line of 100 cubes (as the ants). Then, in the story, they split into 2 lines of 50, so we split our cubes, too. Then, 4 lines of 25, and so on....Excellent book to use with the cubes to demonstract how many different ways to make 100.

4-0 out of 5 stars Elisa- Elementary Ed. Student at U of A and Pima
I read this book to my two cousins, one who was age eight and the other six. The older one did not like the story very much, she thought she was alittle too old to be listening to a book about ants going to a picnic. However the younger one enjoyed the book, even though she did not understand the division. She enjoyed the way the book flowed, the pictures, the story and most of all the "hey and a hi dee hos". I think for younger readers this book is really fun and instructional. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Always a hit at bedtime
My 16 month old daughter has loved this book at bedtime since she was 8 months old or so.She immediately is captured by the counting and rhyming pace of this board book and gets ready to settle down for the night.Another Boynton best.

5-0 out of 5 stars What fun!!!
We have enjoyed reading ALL of the Boynton books to our 4 month old. Some have even been memorized - if she starts to get a little fussy, all we need to do is start reciting one of the books, and she gets the happiest smile on her face. These books are fun to read, fun to listen to, just fun!I would definitely recommend Boyntons books to any parent of a newborn as a good way to get started reading to a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars My toddlers love Sandra Boynton!
If you like Sandra Boynton, you'll love this book.It rhymes, it helps kids learn to count, and it's cute and funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for adult self-study
My goal is to master the algebra that I found so troublesome as a junior high student. As an adult self-learner, I recommend this book highly. Although the illustrations and writing style are pitched at a 12 to 17 year old, I found the information presented clearly and in an easy-to-understand format. For example, the importance of the Pythagorean Theorem is emphasized and then beautifully reinforced with numerous sample problems, worked-out in great detail. Also, the treatment of "completing the square" is the best I have yet encountered. Finally, the author's philosophy of education coincides with my own, namely: difficult material can and should be presented simply as opposed to the all too frequent, presenting simple concepts in an absurdly convoluted and impossible to comprehend manner. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I have a daughter that literally HATES math. From the moment I told her of this book, she's been intrigued. She's read the book and says it makes math more interesting.I'm very happy with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!
This is an awesome book. I especially like the part that sets out to prove that grownups aren't as smart as they think they are. (Definitly true!) I think this book would be good for ages 9+. 8-year olds could do it but might need some help. I'm 10 and I was fine with it. Definitly worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Math Book for Younger Kids Too
The reading level for this book should just be a guideline. If parents are reading it, the examples & games can be done by kids much younger. My son's first grade teacher recommended using this book over the summer to prepare him for 2nd grade math enrichment.Read more

I am an elementary teacher who just introduced multiplication to my third graders. This book allowed me to cover times tables in half the time it would have taken me to use the text used by my district.Students were enthusiastic about the stories and love to retell them continuously. This is a fantastic tool for any student who is struggling or is being introduced to multiplication.I highly recommend this book to parents, students and other educational personnel. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars It worked, not as planned, but worked
I bought this CD for my 9 year old nephew and I have to be honest that he hated it.BUT it still worked, I told him to learn them and we'd quit listening to the CD and he learned at lightening speed just to get away from it.The tunes can be a little folksy but I thought it was a good way to learn and it does stick in your head.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST one!
I bought several Multiplication CD's and this was absolutely the best one.It includes skip counting which really has helped my daughter learn her multiplication facts.Buy this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids!
My child has a processing disorder which make math extremely difficult. She has always been able to learn song lyrics easily, and this CD was no exception.Kids in 2nd grade can get a great start to 3rd grade math by learning to count by multiples of numbers 2 through 12.I would definitely recommend to all kids, especially those who like music, but not learning basic multiplication. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Alexandra D Pima Student Tucson
I read this book to a group of kindergarten students. Right now they are learning about money just coins they know penny, dime and nickel. Some of the students were able to point out the coins and do some of the adding with the pig family. But majority of them just enjoyed the pictures and the storyline. They were unable to follow the hidden math problem. But overall it is a fun story to read with the students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pigs will be Pigs
A very creative way to teach money concepts.I liked the way the book reviews the way to make change.I read this to a group of 3rd graders.I don't know that they found the book entertaining, but it did help them review money.I think 2nd graders would probably enjoy the story more, but may not understand all of the math concepts as well as the third graders.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pigs will be Pigs Review
I read this book to children in first grade and they LOVED IT!!The children thought that this book was so hilarious. The book did such a great job incorporating money and counting into it.The illustrations were awesome as well, the pictures kept the children's attention while I was reading the book.I kept a tally of how much the pigs found and where they found the money. The children loved helping me keep track and they all participated in naming all the different locations of where the pig family kept the money.I do recommend this book for a circle or group reading, the children will love it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Hesitate to Buy This Book!
I have had an interest in buying this book for many years. It is recommended in virtually every reputable catalog. It just always seemed like when essential schoolbooks were purchased, it didn't make sense to purchase a book about just ONE person.Well, that was a gigantic mistake on my part. The accomplishments of Archimedes made him one of the most important founders of science. This captivating book tells the story of Archimedes life AND gives vivid imagery to his accomplishments through simple, effective text and delightful illustrations. From my 3rd grader to my 10th grader, they all eagerly finished the book with enthusiastic comprehension.Of course, the "Eureka" story stood out to all, but other concepts such as levers and water displacement were covered in a way that brought clarity to those scientific principles. So this book is not about one man, but a plethora of important scientific observations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful AND Entertaining - a rare mix
I just got done reading this aloud to my homeschooled 6th grade twins. What a treasure! The author weaves together mathematical and scientific principles into a delightful story format. My kids had no trouble understanding the well-illustrated concepts.5-0 out of 5 stars The Illustrated Archimedes
Not only is this book an educational and interesting read, it also inspires investigation into Archimedian principles and inventions. The drawings illustrate these scientific principles clearly. 1-0 out of 5 stars the epitome of mediocrity
This book is very poor.I give it a poor rating because the solution manuals that compliment this book are very mediocre. The solution manual that came with the book (It came bundled with the text at my college bookstore) seems as though it was hastily put together. Some answers arewrong, have typos, or even lacking altogether. The solution manual onlycovers chapters 1-12.The remaining chapters are covered in anothermanual...that's where the above problems are thrown into plain view.Inthe second solution manual, some answers don't match, are missing, orwrong. For example, chapter 13 has two sections that are flipped around, which shows the haste in bringing out this book.I have nothing good tosay about these texts. When Calculus 3 is over this semester, I have 660+pages worth of TP...that's the only way I feel the purchased can bejustified.

2-0 out of 5 stars Recommed This Book With Reservation
As all of you know already, all (except some exceptional textbooks by distinguished authors) Addison Weslely Mathematics books are well known for their terrible excercizes, explanations, lessons, and their contents. Thereare a few reasons why the above statement is true, but you can figure themout by yourself. Also, lack of information that hinders AP Calculus B Cstudents further emphasize that this is a book made for the novicemathematicians of extremely low ability in problem solving and thinking.Overall, this book is not a book that can be used in an Advanced PlacementCalculus BC class; and indeed, this book would a terrible choice for ashort calcululus class at a university that offers a good qualitymathematics education. This book definiately receives a "poor"recommendation; its contents must be enhanced for it to receive a betterrecommendation from the instructors and learners in the United States.

4-0 out of 5 stars Professional Review
This calculus book is an excellent choice for college bound mathematics students in high schools. It covers every topics needed to succeed in later math courses and future; it has ample real-life problem situations that notonly hone mathematics skills ofthe students, it also helps them tounderstand most of the abstract concepts of calculus. This book is suitablefor use in any AP Calc courses (AB or BC). Despite many special features inthis overall superior book, I do not strongly recommand this book. Thereason is that this book uses very minimum colors and graphics that canhelp high school students to be interested in the materials in calculus;besides, graphics with colors CERTAINLY helps everyone to grasp theabstract "stuff". If you are a high school chairperson, and youare considering to purchase this book for your school to use as an AP Calctext book, I recommand you to look for a newer book. ... Read more

John Green has done it again! An Abundance of Katherines is lighter than Looking for Alaska, but the characters are just as engaging and the action, in some ways, more believable.

From third grade through his senior year of high school, Colin Singleton, child prodigy, has dated nineteen girls. All of them have been named Katherine (anagrammed in the rake; ie, her tank), and all of them have dumped him.Not for the same reasons, and not in the same way.Katherine XVIII dumped him in an email, for example. And K-19 dumped him immediately after graduation. Now, faced with a Katherine-less summer, Colin and his best friend, Hassan, decide to take a road trip. They are short-stopped in Gutshot, Tennessee, home to Archduke Franz Ferdinand's grave, with a job offer.Since there are no Katherines in sight, only Lindseys and Katrinas, the two boys settle in for the summer to interview textile workers, and, in Colin's case, come up with a mathematical formula for predicting the end result of a romantic relationship -- his Eureka moment.Layered with fun and funky characters, anagrams, formulas, flashbacks, and footnotes, this complex yet easy-to-read novel is not only compelling, but one of the smartest novels I've read in a long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Little Choppy, But Decent
I should preface this by saying that as 30something adult, I don't seek out "YA" (young adult, aka teen) fiction for my leisure reading. In the case of this book, I didn't realize it was a YA title until I was already hooked, and since I'm a fan of quirky coming-of-age novels, it pretty much fit right into my comfort zone. The story is about recent high-school graduate Colin. A former child prodigy, he is now merely another smart teenager with underdeveloped social skills and a yearning to leave his intellectual mark on the world. With the summer between high school and college to kill, he's also heartbroken because his girlfriend, Katherine, just dumped him. Actually, she's the nineteenth Katherine to sever relations with Colin (hence the title) -- although one of the book's enduring mysteries is how someone as neurotic as Colin manages to have relations with 3, let alone 19 girls, whatever they may be named. 4-0 out of 5 stars Let's clear this up
C=pi*d.That means the diameter has to be **multiplied** by "three and a little bit" in order to be equivalent to, or wrap around, the circumference of the circle. It takes "three and a little bit" diameters to get around the circle one time, not one diameter to get around the circle three and a little bit times. The engineer was right!Other than that, it was still a pretty good book, though. If you're a teacher with an older class, you can see if they can spot the error.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could I help clarify?
I believe the quote about the circumference and diameter is worded incorrectly. We all know that the size of the diameter and circumference are proportional (hence pi), but the diameter would never wrap around a circumference 3 and a little times! This is obviously false because the circumference is larger than the diameter. The circumference would wrap around the diameter 3 and a little times. Please check your books to determine if the quote is correct in R. Krapf's review - if so, then the book is WRONG!

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge and real imaginative fun.
If you look for children's books long on imagination, fun and knowledge and are put off by the flood of preachy, sermonizing and "let me tell you how to be" books. This is for you.
