This book features a lot of funny action in both the pictures and the story, keeping young listeners/readers entertained while sneaking in a math lesson (doubling numbers).I could imagine a teacher using this as a preparation for or follow-up to a field trip to the pumpkin form, or in conjunction with any activity related to a harvest/autumn theme.Since the story doesn't involve any mention of Halloween, this title could be used by parents, teachers or librarians from September through Thanksgiving. ... Excellent!
This is an EXCELLENT advanced mathematics book. I am currently a high school student using this book on my own. Never mind the criticism of the "unclear explanations" in each section by the other reviewers. The book briefly states what is needed to do the exercises, and the majority of the "major" theorems in advanced mathematics are proved in the exercises themselves (in fact, that is why so many of the exercises are so challenging). In this way (other books just prove the theorems for you and allow people just to memorize the proof), the author allows you to figure things out for yourself. This book also has a wide scope. However, one tiny fault of this book is that it does not convince you of some of the important facts (and these theorems are definitely not beyond the level of the book), for example the "Rule of 72." Also, this book is not for the average person. It requires a lot of critical thinking. Therefore, if you are not a real math person, I would suggest you get this book along with another advanced mathematics book with more detailed explanations so that you can compare and contrast the two.

Review From An Unimpressed Student
This book fails to give adequate examples at the beginning of each section and provide enough information about the given topic. Further, the examples that are provided are either 1) easy in relation to the actual problems in the "written exercises" section or 2) not relevant to the actual problems in the "written exercises" section. Also, the examples that are given sometimes miss key steps and are therefore confusing. This leads to much frustration. The actual problems though can be quite challenging and appropriate if the reader actual understands the basic underlying principles of the problems. However, the book on occasion supplies inaccurate or incorrect solutions to these problems (the odd number problems in the "written exercises," the "class exercises," and "chapter test" solutions are located in the back of the book).

Very happy -- my child's math book at school skips around, while only giving four or five problems for practice.This book logically develops concept after concept and provides ample practice.Highly recommended.

A terrific resource!
Writing in Math Class is a great resource for any teacher interested in teaching writing across the curriculum. I have used many of the ideas in this book, including how to use math journals, but I think my favorite isasking students to write their own math authobiography, what their mathlife has been like before coming to me. A good book for making math literacy facile
The Grapes Of Math by Gregory Tang and Harry Briggs has one genre of math problems presented in an amusing fashion with good art.The genre is patterns of objects with breaks in the patterns.The children are expected to look at the patterns as groupings or shapes to figure out the total number of objects without counting one-by-one.
a book that makes math kids
The Grapes of Math is a realization for all that math is all around us. An elementary student addresses many situations familiar to everybody that involve math. Her situations and problems are on-going and lead in many different directions, yet all still relative to math. The book is thought provoking and discussion inspiring. The book is most effective in teaching the relevance of mathematics in everyday life through creative riddles. Through its illustrations and imaginative word problems the book creates wonders and fun with every turn of the page for all ages. The Grapes of Math is a big success at motivating kids to see mathematics as a fun necessity.
Great idea
This book is wonderful.Finally there are great books that celebrate math!!This is an awesome book for older children.I'd say at least 1st grade (some Kindergartener would really enjoy it).However, done properly, it's too time consuming for a preschooler.My 3 year old, even though he's very bright, could only hang for 3 pages doing it the right way.After that we just kind of made up our own *way*.Don't be discouraged to buy it, though, because no matter what the age, you can never encourage math enough!!!Great book, great buy!! ... Homeschool & higher thinking
I used this book while homeschooling my 6th grade son, and it was his favorite math day.The Fibonacci numbers intrigued him and revealed the connection between spiral galaxies, patterns on a pine cone, and our own DNA. It also incorporates reading skills, as the book refers the student to an accompanying newspaper for further data he needs.A unique and wonderful book!

I have used this book in teaching both Consumer Math and Geometry. It includes many activities to be done by groups or individuals. Excellent book for 1st graders!

Greg Tang teaches real math
Greg Tang's books are splendid for children of many ages. As a former math professor, math tutor and grandmother, I have used Tang's books with 5, 6, 7, and 10-year olds. They are teaching real mathematics, not just counting.

Sixth Grade Math text
My son uses this book at schoool, it appears to be a decent introduction to many math subjects, and continues on the course 2 and so on. It is appealing in looks and examples. However, be very careful- in trying to lighten his backpack I went on-line to buy this. The paperback version is not this text at all- it is a workbook. That is why it is cheap. Great Curriculum Supplement
II find these math starters very helpful.I have been using them since the beginning of school and they have been a wonderful tool to help my students get back into the routine of school work.

Not even close to what I was expecting. I was looking for something more unique, fun, and interactive to supplement boring books. If the excerpt had shown some sample activitities I would not have purchased this book. The activities are nothing more than shortened book learning. For example, one activity starts by telling the student that mistakes can be made adding fractions and then gives two practice problems with errors that the student is supposed to find. That's it.
