5-0 out of 5 stars Get For First Tiem Estimators
This is a great book for children who know how to estimate and for those who are just learing. This book is filled with pictures and illistrations on how you would estimate wiht a many number of things. A thing that I liked about this book is that it just wasn't estimating how a many of cars or jellybeans, but it was also prices in a store window. Another thing that I liked about this book is that at the end it give helpful teaching tips on how to read the book to your or any child. This is why I would recommend this book to any parent or teacher with a childwho need help estimating or just wants to have a review. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lemonade for Sale
I teach 3rd grade and will use this to review bar graphs at the beginning of next year. The students can usually relate to a lemonade stand.I actually purchased it to learn about starting up businesses for a writing prompt, but I can use it to enhance both skills.

My daughter, five, loves the book. She enjoyed the story and loved the beautiful illustrations which helped her to understand how bar graphs worked.I think it's a great book and worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for 2nd-5th grade!
This is the best book I could find about making change and learning about money for elementary students. It worked perfectly for a lesson I did with second graders. I let them work with partners with fake coins learning to add and subtract money. Buy this book! It is impossible for find good books on money and this is a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading Practice while Learning to Count Coins!
This book was a great way to help children learn about different ways to make the same amount of money, in this case, the fifty cents needed to go to the face painting booth. The story offered several opportunities topractice counting coins, while using repeated, predictable text that iswonderful for early elementary readers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book, first intro to discovering odd and even numbers
This book is quite cute from an entertainment perspective.Farmer Bill wakes up to a snowstorm one day to find that he is missing one of his mittens. When he goes to his barns, he discovers one by one, that each of his animals is missing a mitten (be prepared to explain what a cow's udder is for!).They finally see the goat at the top of the hill who is the culprit - he's munching on all the mittens! When they're all inside, the goat decides to make lunch on Farmer Bill's new coat.Very cute story and throughout the book, the illustrations indicate how many mittens the animals have (i.e. three for the cow) and "odd" is written under the three mittens, and the next picture is of four mittens with "even" written under them.Right now, my little one thinks that odd means just "weird" so that concept is coming a little slowly.Be prepared to go into a full explanation of numbers when you read this book.It definitely takes some time to do but the story makes it well worth it.Ours has to be read nightly.Highly recommend!

2-0 out of 5 stars Book intro's idea of even and odd numbers
We loved Murphy's "Henry the Fourth", but we didn't particularly like this book. While the artwork is delightful, the rhymes are clumsy, and worse, the premise just is not very interesting. At least, finding out what happened to the cow's utter-mittens did not engage my kids (almost 3 and 5).
3-0 out of 5 stars Awkward, but cute
By far, the illustrations are the best part of this book. The wonderful depictions of Farmer Bill, his farm and animals give the book much more depth than the forced rhymes. And frankly, they also do a better job of getting across the concepts of odd and even. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute Beginning Math Book - a review of "Animals on Board"
Interesting comments (below) about this book, BUT I have to say that we didn't even notice the fact that the equations and the sequence of the numbers didn't match until I read the reviews here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Addition left to right
I disagree with the last reviewer. As a first grade teacher, I liked that the number sentences demonstrated the commutative property (could that be why the author had the animals commuting? LOL)Our class could discuss how the sentence 5+2 is the same as 2+5 for example - regardles of which group on what truck was counted first the total animals is the same.We could make trucks and put our own little animal on them, and write our own # sentences in our own little books - changing the order of the trucks and getting the same result.(Part-part-whole concept.)A child shouldn't be taught that adding two quantities works only one direction and it's either right or wrong based on the direction you write the # sentence.5+2 =7 is the same as 2+5=7. Even 7=5+2 or 7=2+5 is correct! I appreciate that that the numbers are commutable in this text!
3-0 out of 5 stars Orientation problems
The concept for the book is very nice: adding everyday objects. The problem comes in the way the drawings are done. On one page, we see a truck carrying three tigers. On the next page, a truck carrying two more tigers follows the first. Below is a billboard with the equation: 3+2=5. Enter the problem. Whereas in the equation the number 3 is on the left, in the illustration the picture of the truck with the three tigers is on the right side. Similarly, the 2 in the equation is to the right of the 3, in the drawing the truck with the two tigers is on the far left. It would have been *much* nicer if the layout of the equation and the layout of the truck corresponded to one another. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Explains doubling math concept
This is a pretty cute book.At first, the little farmer boy has five ducks for which to care and he describes a typical day that that many ducks require. He explains how much food they need, their bath, and how they go to bed. However, when they all go out for a walk one day, they each bring back a friend, doubling the little farmer's efforts. So, now he needs double the food, double the straw and double the hands and asks for a friend too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book - especially nice for the firefighter fan!
Be sure to grab this one particularly if you have little ones who really like firefighters. Its main characters are firefighters, trying to get dressed for the big parade, but they don't have the correct amount of buttons. They have a variety of sizes and shapes but they must be able to sort them in such a way that each firefighter has a set of four. There is a typo in the beginning that talks about the number os sets - it says there needs to be four sets of three instead of three sets of four, but other than that, it's just a great little book. My little one wants it read repeatedly each night. What a great way to start your toddler off right, particularly if you have a boy who loves firetrucks and firefighters! Highly recommend!

2-0 out of 5 stars ok for math but not a book for us...
This book is fine for teaching patterns, it's main intent.I have a problem with the behavior of the kids however.First, the older brother doesn't share and his parents have no problem with this.Secondly, the younger child sneaks around misbehaving and ignoring both of her parents and her brother yet she's rewarded with a gift.We won't be reading this one again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beep, Beep, Vroom, Vroom
I used this book as a follow-up to our math patterning unit in my Kindergarten class. As I read the book, the students manipulated unifix cubes to copy the various patterns throughout the story. It was a great hit and certainly a good review of the patterning concept.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read!
My children LOVE this book.Don't think that because this is a "math" book it will be uninteresting! The repetition of the car sounds (beep beep, vroom vroom, crash crash) holds even my 1 and 3 year olds attention. It is fun to read and the author gives you some ideas in the back of the book to try while reading the book. You can read it for fun or point out patterns, colors, or even talk about sharing or asking permission. It is a wonderful book for a boy or a girl.I am giving this book as gifts because my girls enjoy it so much. ...
