5-0 out of 5 stars He WILL read this book.... but you should too
There's definitely no tip-toeing around in this book, which is exactly why boys will actually read it.Although I was a little shocked by the authors' candor at times, I also recognize the only way to really get through to adolescent boys is on their playing field.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I Had this Growing Up...Every 13 year old Boy Needs this Book.
I purchased this book for my friends son who is 13 years old and before giving it to her I read through it myself. All of the information is very important (12+ years old) and can help educate young boys to make decisions based on knowledge they obtained before there is a problem rather than after, like what I went through when I was growing up and I'm sure countless others have that did not have the benefit and knowledge in this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good info, a little too advanced
The first third of this book contained good information for my 11-year-old son.It explains what happens to a boy's body in a way he was able to understand. The remainder of the book also has good information, but the topics of intercourse and STDs were more than my son was ready for. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
I remember that my grandma bought this book to give to my mom, so that she could share it with me.I developed pretty early, so my mom had already talked to me about my period before I read this book.I remember that she allowed me to read it myself and let me ask questions (I had lots).I also remember looking at the book with my cousin and laughing at the pictures of the developing male and female bodies. All in all, it's a great book that I'm glad is still in publication.I'd caution parents to give it to their children earlier than the age the book recommends. Both boys and girls are reaching puberty earlier these days and need to know about all of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful in 1975, and still is
My parents read both this book and "Where did I come from?" to me when they were first published in the mid-seventies (I was born in 1970).I don't remember feeling awkward or embarrassed about the books.I was at an age where everything was pre-sexual.I had no social hang-ups about my body parts.I remember very clearly starting elementary school about this time and I was able to understand what all the innuendos were about. Yes, sexual innuendos by many other children that couldn't have been older than nine.I remember other kids laughing at the girl who really believed that children came from the cabbage patch!I remember one of my friends crying and running to her mother when she caught our friend Kenny using the toilet while standing up.She though he had a horrible tumor.
4-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book...
I think I'll make it a tradition in my family! My mom gave me this book when I was growing up, and I swear I read it cover to cover each day!! I loved the illustrations; I thought they eased the transition from Uncomfy-with-the-whole-puberty-thing to Yay!-I'm a Woman!! :P I'd recommend it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It's Perfectly Normal
Well what *IS* normal anyway? If normal to you is giving your child a book with lots of comic style nudity, directions for masterbating, exactly HOW to have sex (etc.) then you might want to grab this and run!If your child is average to above average intellectually he or she will have a full understanding of how to pleasure him or herself and how to perform the deed by the time they are finished.Of course there are warnings of pregancy, sickness (STD'S), and death (AIDS) if they are to do this while unprotected, so no worries there. You'd have to see the book to believe it.I was shocked when I started looking through it, and was doubling over with laughter that I had actually considered giving this to my 10 year old son.Actually, I did hand it to him in the car before I actually looked at it and he was shocked by the second page, gave it back and said "I think this is WAY too old for me Mama", and it turned out he was right!I'll never hand him something like that again without looking first.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not age appropriate.Shocking.
I purchased this for my 11 year old son.I am so thankful that I read this book before giving it to him or going straight to discussing it.The pictures are hand drawn but graphic.Far too much detail for the target audience. Kids need to know about sexuality but they don't need to know EVERYTHING before they are even teen-agers.I would be upset to find this in a school library. This book definitely needs to be used with supervision. I returned this book as I believe its content is inappropriate for the cover advertised age of 10 years old.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on the Subject
This is one of the best books on the subject of sexuality for children. Presented in plain talk with nicely drawn illustrations, it's neither too graphic nor too cartoonish for the 10-12 year old set. It covers a lot of topics they need/want to know about, and it's handled very tactfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
My son is actually reading and enjoying the book. As a teenager he has many questions but he is hesitant to ask. This book came handy it covers wide range of subjects and answers questions in a direct way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Like a textbook
My 12 year old son keeps this book in a stack by his bed, but finds it too clinical--like a textbook. He likes "What's Going on On There" better because it's has a more humorous approach. As time goes on, however, he may appreciate the deeper lever of detail and information provided here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful resource
While no book on this subject is going to cover everything exactly the way you might prefer, this book does a very good job of covering a variety of topics related to sexual development. The material is presented in an easy-to-read, factual manner. After reviewing the book myself, I gave it to my 12 year old son, who looked at me as if to say "I know this stuff already".Yet the next day, he thanked me for giving him the book and said it had cleared up some misunderstandings he had.We were then able to talk about some of his questions and impressions from the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! An appropriate book for a 'tween
After going through several books with this topic, I found one that discusses the issues important to a pre-teen without being graphic, immoral and too informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I purchased this book for my twin 10-year-old son's (who will be starting 5th grade in August) to read. They had started to ask me questions about different things they had heard at school from their friends, etc., and I decided to look for books they could read that would give them some correct, age appropriate information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to get the dialogue going...
I checked out this book from our public library and read itfirst on my own.The format of the book is several short chapters filled with great information followed by questions submitted by girls, which then the author goes on to answer. The book is written in words that are easy for kids to understand and the illustrations are clever and funny. In the other reviews, I read about concerns with the subject of masturbation. That is found ONLY in a question in the Q & A section of Chapter 7.I personally did not feel comfortable with the topic at our age group so when I BOUGHT our own copy, I just tore page 79-80 out and by doing so I didn't disturb neither the end of Chapter 7 nor the beginning of Chapter 8.Overall, this is a great book to get the conversation started with my daughter (almost 10) that has just started taking the leap from little girl to young lady.I have three daughters and I will use this book with all three.Hope this helps...
5-0 out of 5 stars My 8 year old and I love this book
My 8 year old daughter met me at the door last nite and asked if we could read more from the book - I've been reading her one chapter a night. I love the way the topics are handled without being graphic. She asked if we could read two chapters tonite. I would recommend this to evey parent facing puberty with a young girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for your pre-teen girl
My 8 1/2 year old loved it.It was informative, amusing and easy to read.It was in no way intimidating for her.It covered subjects she is beginning to need to know about;hair growth, body odor, breast development, growth spurts, menustration etc.It was not too clinical and each chapter included questoins by children and answers. There is a strong emphasis on the fact that everyone grows in different ways and at different times and that your body will grow at the right rate for you.A lot on loving and respecting your body.Food disorders are discussed. There was not a clinical discussion on sex which I felt should be put off for a year or so anyway.A book I purchased at the same time "The period book" has more on that topic and peer issues.I'll give that to her at 10.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer for younger teenagers.
This is a primer for younger teenagers. It is well written, although it needs to be updated in 2006. It is a textbook more than a think piece. It is a good starter book for parents and younger teenagers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Changing Bodies out of date
I was very disapointed with the book. Expanded third edition was deceiving because I thought it was new - my oversight. The book is out of date - I oversee a Center that teaches sex education and this was not helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Book!
I gave this book to my 11 year old daughter, she took off with it and I never saw it again. She told me she was reading it and that it was "really good".I wouldn't know...I haven't seen what's between the covers!Based on my daughter's reaction, I would recommend this to all parents of girls. If your daughter is like mine and the slightest HINT of the "visiting friend" comes up in conversation, she runs screaming. With this little volume, she can lock herself in her room and get all her questions answered.A must-have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much?
After actually looking at the book I found it to be informative in the subject matter to do with menstration, I thought some things took it over the line (examining self with mirror),Maybe I am wrong,But.............You decide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, straightforward information made interesting.
This is a great follow-up book to "The Care and Keeping of You" (in the American Girl series). This book touches on all of the same subjects, such as hygene, periods, puberty, etc., but goes a little more in depth. While it does not address sex directly, it does address the topic where necessary and in a scientific, practical way.It is a good "bridge" book for you and your daughter. This book will help your daughter understand herself before she gets into the more adult topics of sex and romantic love. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars MyDaughter Loves This Book!
This book is perfect for introducing your daughter to her body and the changes she will go through in the early stages of puberty. I got this book for my daughter when she was 9 and I let my daughter read it alone the first time, then we read it together to answer any questions she had.Since then, she's read it several more times. It's an easy read and not too much in-depth for her understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love it
This book takes you from the beginnings of every subject that any girl would want to know. It explains, in a truly enthusiastic way, all there is to talk about for growing little girls. I had my daughters reading this book to me and I had to giggle at times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, Love it, Love it!
I was searching for the "right" book, not to serious, not to juvenile and not to boring. I found what I needed in this book. I could only wish I knew half the stuff talked about in this book when I was a pre-teen. My 10 year old really enjoyed and appreciated the book. Thanks for helping me out. Diamond's mom, Kim. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Truth about Sex
My husband and I spent a year preparing for the coming "talk" with our oldest when I came across this series. There is 4 books in all.We have used books 1-3 and have been extremely pleased with how the content and each topic was handled. At first I was worried that some levels where a little more than I was ready for my kids to know but we went ahead and covered each topic in the book.My kids LOVED them and appreciated having all their questions answered so throughoughly and lovingly. The authors do an outstanding job communicating the love God has for them and what His intenstions are for sexuality. I highly recommend these books for children of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
As a Christian Parent raised in a family that never discussed sex, I found this book (and the series) to be a great starting point. It hits all the right topics in a way that communicates a Christian view without using guilt or sounding preachy.Parents should read it themselves, then pass it on to their child. Don't wait for your child to hit puberty before you start talking about this important subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Way too much information for a young girl
I bought this book with the intention of giving it to a girl who just turned 12. Both her mother and I agreed it was way to much information and the illustrations were too graphic for a 12 year-old. The intent of the book is commendable but some parents may take issue with the author's opinions on the subjects covered. It might be better for an older girl but parents/relatives should read the book carefully before handing it over to even a young teenager.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
When my 9 year old daughter started asking me questions about her body, I knew it was time for the talk. But I wanted to be prepared so I searched and searched for just the right book. I didn't want to get into SEX or male organs (that's a whole different talk). We really bonded by reading this book and discussing it together. She is now well informed about the changes that she will be going thru. This is a great book and perfect for younger girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Young Girls
My daughter is nine... I wanted something that would help her with "the basics" without getting into too much detail about sex.I was looking for something that would focus on HER body and how she is feeling... this book did that perfectly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I've been looking for.....
This book will be perfect for my 9 yr old and I to use as we discuss her next few years. It is so clear and written at a level she will surely understand.I have read MANY MANY books but they all mesh this topic in along with topics which are too old for a 9 yr old. However three of her friends have already started so she needs to be informed now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Us!
I've looked at a lot of books and this one is great,!Unlike other books, it does not mention anything about boys, yet.I feel like for a young girl, "Let's learn about your body first"boys later. Also unlike other books, it doesn't go overboard with talking about a first trip to the gynecologist or anything explicit about sex.2-0 out of 5 stars Lovely and Fruitful!
This was a wonderful. The bit about the horses running in the field of corn was my favourite! Sammy the Lamb was my best character. I hated snoopy the snoop, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's Happening to my body?-It taught me alot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, engaging introduction to puberty for girls
Although the main topic is menstruation, this book covers all of the physical changes a girl can expect as she approaches and moves through puberty. It addresses, in an interesting and calm tone, all of the questions a girl might face, from where the blood comes from, to being patient if your breast development is slower than your best friend's.It is reassuring, thorough, and my 10-year-old couldn't put it down!I found her awake way past bedtime, reading this book. She is engrossed in it, and this has led to some wonderful discussion between us, on the responsibilities of growing up, and needing to respect your own body.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not Happy
I was extremely excited when I discovered this book.I wanted it for my ten-year-old-daughter.From reading other reviews, the book was suppose to be about girls becoming wowen (getting their periods).I was disappointed to find that the book contained too much information about sex and a picture of male genitals.I wanted my daughter to learn about her own genitals--not a male's genitals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Make Up Book For a Teen
This book is truely a great make up boook for teens. Definetly a good book for beginners. Of course, if u are already a girl that reads fashion/beauty magazines, then there isnt anything new here...
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Teens
I bought this as a gift for my 12 year-old niece. I read it before I gave it to her to make sure it was appropriate. I LOVED THIS BOOK. Bobbi addresses the girls as peers, tells them to love their looks, particularly those things which make them "unique"- freckles, a strong nose, etc., and urges them to use make-up primarily as an enhancement. She also discusses skin care, hair care, and shows before and after pictures. I want to get the one for adults, and I already plan on buying one for my own daughter when she is older.

5-0 out of 5 stars For what it was I like it
I got this book when I was 16 or 17 years old, and I liked it.I've never been much for fashion or glamour, but this book focused as much on looking and being healthy as it did on making your self look really done up every day. Also, the author really encourages girls to really love their individual, unique beauty, and discourages doing anything to alter the way you look naturally.I suppose I havent read many books on the subject, it may be pretty standard for these books, but it sure is a change of pace from so many other messages women and young girls are constantly bombarded with.Sometimes I still pull this book out. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The best guide for single moms (5 stars, even tho I can't edit it to show them!)
I got this book for my son when we got to the point that he had so many questions (technical in nature) that I couldn't remember the exact answer to (or don't know, not being a boy). I turned to my male friends for help, and one recommended "The Guy Book," which he had given to his5 boys and they liked a lot. My son lovedit. It has a lot of info on boys, their bodies, their issues with friends, and such necessary details as how to buy a corsage and tie a tie. My son asked intelligent questions, sparked by the book, and has read bits of it over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Teen Reference book...
I enjoyed this book and I'm a grown man. lol. It presents the information in a very non threatening way for teens and fathers of teens about the "sex" questions. Fun read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Uses Great 50's Car Photos -- A Great Book for Dads to Use
This is "THE BOOK" for Dads to review with their sons. The author successfully uses "car talk" to explain becoming a man.Clever chapter titles include: "Under the Hood: Parts," "The Ignition System: How It All works,""Road Hazards: STD," "Maintenance," etc. I got a kick out of discussing the old retro-car photos with my sons. The funny retro-pictures kept the topic from getting uncomfortable and gave us guys something else to talk about other than sex ... when things got a little too uncomfortable. My sons reread to certain often.Definitely buy ............................................. This book is guy-focused, uses guy-slang, and has guy-humor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars mother and daughter quality time
My daughter and I loved this book.It has quality information in a great question and answer based format.Dr. Ashby has very good insight into the questions a young lady has, as well as, the information that a Mother wants to tell her little girl about puberty and the changes her body is going through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put this one down!
What a great mother/daughter book!I showed this book to my daughter and before we knew it, we had read the entire book together! We then spent hours talking! I am going to buy a bunch and give them to friends!Loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me understand my body.

5-0 out of 5 stars How You Are Changing
My husband and I have read through the book and feel that this is the place to pick up where previous discussions have ended.Having a biblical basis was very important to us and this book does so wonderfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
This has so much info in it, I am afraid it had a little too much for my 11 year old.She became a bit nervous atsome things I thought she would not.I would not let a child read it alone, as suggested, until a parent has read it first and made sure there is nothing too mature for the individual child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I've been searching for just the right book for my 11 year old son and this is one has just the right look and information I wanted for him. Many other books were way too long, some with pages in the hundreds and other books were too immature for his age. This is a great beginner book for covering all of the facts and terms. An 8 yr. old would need help reading it but an 11 yr. old could read it alone. I think it would be fine even for 12-13 who hasn't learned much about reproduction and puberty. The illustrations are simple but accurate, not like some I've seen that are more like from a medical textbook or cartoonish. There is a glossary with pronunciations and definitions. I like that it is Christian and family based. It's everything I was looking for!! ... Read more
